    I worked with Al at a local theatre once, do NOT try to heckle him, he will rip you apart and make you feel so small. but his full act is really funny and off stage he is a lovely guy. He is so interesting to talk with and his knowlage of the war is unbelievable. I could have chatted for hours with him

You should look at snippets as well such as , "Name a country we have defeated them", "Al Murray on Nations of the World" and also "All parents must watch this". He created this stage persona of an old fashioned, rather bigoted, jingoistic misogynistic pub landlord, the reason for the bar on stage is your supposed to a customer in his pub when you watch him. He did several tv series with this character in a show named Time Gentlemen Please. That's also on youtube. In reality he is very well educated, having a History Degree from Oxford and has been given both an honorary MA and honoraty PHD. His entry on Wikipedia is worth reading. Once your familiar with him there is even an upload of him performing in a small bar in of all place France, entitled Al murray "here to help" in paris april 2013.

The apocryphal story being that an apple fell on his head and gave him the idea. So my joke was that it was the apple that actually invented gravity and that all good ole Isaac did was observe it and take the credit for it.

The most impressive thing about his show to me is his ability to remember everybody he talks to, their name, their job and then bring them back into a joke when it fits. Very intelligent comedy hidden behind a very convincing landlord character. Definitely check out more of his stuff, he does a good bit about naming a country great Britain hasn't conquered.

    Glad you enjoyed him as I love his humour. As others have said he’s a super bright guy who is mocking the Brits every bit as much as the countries he’s supposedly mocking in his stereotypes and general piss taking. As for the accents, we have some doozies here so I shouldn’t worry about not understanding everything he said. A full Glaswegian, Belfatian, cockney, Yorkshireman, Geordie or person from the Valleys, speaking in dialect can be totally incomprehensible to most. Most brits probably have more American English input via tv and films than they do accents and dialect outside of their own than anything else now that Neighbours isn’t as popular as it was and Paul Hogan isn’t on the adverts etc anymore.

  • @nayf7682
    @nayf7682 3 года назад +7

    I was surprised that you were struggling to understand him, I've never heard an American reaction about his accent before. The reason he has a bar on stage is because he dose his stand up as a character called "the pub landlord" a stereotype little Englander with big idea's, so a lot of the time although what he's saying is usually based in some kind of truth or historical fact it quite often isn't actually what he really thinks but purely for comedy effect.

  • @Helgacabbage
    @Helgacabbage 3 года назад +2

    I really like you guys. Not many Americans seem to appreciate British humour, and it makes me happy to see you get it and laugh and not get all bent out of shape at a gentle ribbing.
    Al Murray's 'Name a country we have defeated them' is the best one after this to react to.
    By the way, you were correct the first time - Al has a working bar on the stage, not a pub. In the UK 'pub' is short for 'public house', which is the building with the bar inside of it. The bar is the counter with the beer taps. :)
    Al Murray is playing a character called The Pub Landlord, which is why he always has a bar and a beer on stage.
    The character is a kind of send-up of those bartenders who stand behind their bars serving the locals and talking about how their village / town / country is the best place in the world and imparting 'wisdom' and definitive opinions on everything. But it's also poking gentle fun at our own enjoyment of considering ourselves so great, as well as daring other people to get offended and thus prove that they also wish to believe themselves superior... and in so doing, showing we are all exactly the same.
    He's a very, very clever man, as you will see if you watch 'Name a country...' He's actually an Oxford educated historian among other things.

    Everyone else has mentioned his "Pub Landlord" character, but to reply to a different point you made about wanting to see a whole show...
    Yes! He actually talks to the audience, and remembers their names etc. and then brings them back into his routine... E.G. In this clip you saw him talk to the musician about playing "god save the queen" - he'd come across him earlier in the show, and as with all the others he'd talked to, remembered enough to refer back to him later!
    This is a cool aspect to his shows, that is hard to appreciate when just viewing clips.
