I was 16 when this show premiered, so I was obviously in that age group that loved snarky humor. I'm 52 now and still think Al Bundy is a true American hero.
Like the Aliens' joke: Hudson: "Hey, Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?" Vasquez: "No, have you?" Like Conan said, "It isn't how hard you can hit but how hard you can get hit." People nowadays are such weaklings that they cannot even hear jokes.

Doing a joke setup, then delivering an insult as the punchline, can be funny, depending on the delivery and timing. It also depends on the target of the insult. If/when someone is being nasty, that makes them a more acceptable target. A nice person is not an acceptable target. So the framing of the joke is also important. None of Al's targets are pleasant people. For instance, when Al meets Marcy's lesbian sister, he treats like a friend, no insults, a few questions about her lifestyle, plenty of respect, because she treats him nice. On the other hand, Marcy. 'Nuff said.
The funny thing is that the actress playing Marcy wrote most of the interactions between Marcy and Al. Also, most of the heavier women were comedians and wrote Al's fat jokes. Some people would have a fit watching this now but I believe most would still see it as simply brilliant. I have never seen you guys laugh so hard!😂😅 Please do more clips of this!
I remember reading the actress playing Marcy was a writer, but I can't find any references to that anywhere. However, she did direct quite a few episodes. Best Wishes. ☮
Sadly, she also ended up ruining the show in the later years when she gained control. Apparently, Amanda and Ed never got along with each other.. They basically butted heads since the first season, but that never really showed on screen. She says Ed was impossible to deal with being stubborn, Ed says she was trying to force her views on the audience over the original outlook for the show. I tend to believe Ed as the show took a weird direction once she became director. That and she dissapeared after the show and Ed has gone on to many projects and is usually praised by everyone for being a nice guy.
“Married With Children” caused me to get suspended from school for a week when I was 9. My parents loved this show, and I watched it with them (I was too young to get the sex jokes so it really didn’t matter), and this was in the late 80’s and early 90’s when the show was in its original run. One of my teachers was a nasty, obese woman who really hated me because I was a happy kid and I was talkative. One day there was a large assembly in the school auditorium, all the individual classes were there, all the teachers, and the principal. I was sitting in the second row and talking to my friend sitting next to me. My fat and mean teacher got angry and yelled at me: “Mr. Eriksen...I’ve just about had enough of you!”, to which I loudly replied: “You wouldn’t say that if I came with large fries and a drink!”. Everyone began laughing hysterically, even the teachers who were trying not to couldn’t help it. She had me suspended for a week for that. My parents were furious, and embarrassed, but once they met her they weren’t mad at me anymore because she was mean to them too, and my mother ended up calling her an obese douche bag.

My main motivation was making people laugh when I was a kid, and my mind instantly remembered how that particular joke made my parents laugh hysterically, my mother ended up choking on her iced tea. That episode had aired only a week or so before, so it was fresh in my mind when the fat teacher yelled that she’d had just about enough of me. I was also a very well behaved kid (my parents were from Sweden and very strict as far as manners and being nice), but this teacher just hated happy kids. Normally I didn’t talk back to her in class because I learned really quickly that she was nice to the kids if other teachers or the Principal were around, but once she had us alone with her and the door was shut, she’d be mean. She used to pick on shy or quiet kids until they cried, and she’d laugh at them. I do think parents complained about her, because once or twice a week the Principal or another teacher would sit in on one of our classes. Obviously she wasn’t going to act up with them there, so it was pointless. But that day in the auditorium with all the teachers and the Principal there, I had protection from her. So when I made that Al Bundy comment to her, I knew she couldn’t do much to me. I also said it in a very nice and polite way, just loud enough for everyone to hear. The auditorium had a cathedral ceiling so it echoed, which was even funnier. I became a legend after that, especially with the older “cool” kids who hated her. What made me happy was seeing the teachers AND the Principal trying not to laugh, but they couldn’t help it.
Hello there. This series from the 80s is still a hit here in Germany. And no matter how bad we're doing, one episode of Al and we're going to be a whole lot better. Because we know... no one has it tougher than Al Bundy. On the other hand, we love Al's character. That charm, that sophistication... that passion... paired with his gestures and facial expressions... not to mention the sayings... it's a celebration. Al Bundy for President. That was a great show. The entire Bundy clan was like a pack of feral dogs. Here's one for you. One time Al was standing next to his son Bud, and says to him, "Bud, what would you rather have in life, love or money?". And without the slightest hesitation Bud says, "Money. I can always buy love". A tear wells up in Al's eye, as he embraces Bud. "That's my boy!" 😂
It's good to see Brits enjoying the Bundy's. I grew up watching reruns of "The Benny Hill" show on PBS late at night. The world lost one of the greats when he died.
This is one of the most consistently funny shows ever. Every single episode was hilarious. Especially when you know the characters and we're waiting on the joke you knew was coming. You didn't know exactly what it would be but you knew it would be great. One of the running gags was Al calling Marcie either a chicken or a young boy.
Not every episode. This show had its losers occasionally. Not every show was "moon men have my socks" good. But even the lesser episodes still had a bright moment.
I've never gone back and watched it again, beyond the rerun here and there. But I remember not liking the final season or two. But even so, it remained a weekly staple for me from the time I was about 8 or 9. I didn't get all the jokes, but there was still a lot of stuff I loved. I have to put this on my list to rewatch.
*This show was almost canceled after the first season. There wasn't a lot of advertising for it, nobody was watching it because they didn't know about it, and then some woman complained and started all these protests and went on talk shows to say how offensive it was. This got ppl curious, ppl started watching to see what it was all about and it shot to #1 and stayed there. This is one of the best and funniest shows ever!*
This is true but misleading. The boycott was lead by a woman (Terry Rakolta), but the boycott was a conservative boycott over sexual, violent, and some homosexual humor. Saying "some woman" complained makes it sound like it was some sort of boycott over the depiction of women, which it was not.

She got the ball rolling, she contacted advertisers, she went on the talk shows, etc..Sure it became more than the one topic she was whining about as well as political in some sense.. and sure, others got involved and were on her side. But it still began with just her having a fit about the bra episode. Either way, it never did anything but make the show popular and bolster rating. So thank you Terry. 👍
@@MATTHEW-rp3kq Yeah, I remember they were talking about cancelling the channel because the ratings weren't very high and the channel was considered the one that took shows that the main networks wouldn't air. Then the ratings shot through the roof with Married with Children and their other shows were becoming more popular. I think that's why the show always made references to Fox being a horrible channel with awful shows.. kinda making fun of themselves.
I can't even see, tears are pouring down my face. I forgot how great all of the characters comedic timing was. I watched every episode and I now want to go back and watch them all again. Oh to go back to a time when people could take a joke. Thanks guys.😂😂✌
It's better to have physical copies, they can't alter it that way. Disney has been altering the shows and movies they acquired from their acquisition of Fox for both Disney+ and Hulu as well as for the movies they are re-releasing on blu-ray.

This show was unprecedented, it was the first time such brutal lines were spoken on a prime time sitcom. The only other sitcoms that parallel it are "All In The Family", with the Archie Bunker character, and "Sanford & Son" with Redd Fox's character. Funny as hell, MWC quickly became my favorite show to watch growing up, and I miss shows like this. It didn't hold back.

i lived in england in the 80's. i loved this show and had some friends over to watch an episode. as i was laughing i noticed my english friends were quite. i asked if they thought it was funny. one friend replied '' its awlful how they treat their dad''.😂😂😂😂
I use to stay with my grandparents alot when I was a kid (late 80s early 90's) my grandfather would always watch this. I didn't really understand the jokes, but he would be CRACKING up!!! It would make me smile, to see him laugh! R.I.P.❤
Honestly, as a heavy woman myself, I still burst out laughing at this show. 😂 I was only 7 years old when the show started airing and I didn't really watch much of it then. It was only when I caught the reruns as a teenager that I appreciated it and I was always a heavier gal (though less heavy back then) and I never got offended at it. It's COMEDY! Most comedy is about making fun of people for one thing or another. I don't understand why people are such delicate snowflakes these days. 😅
I agree. Also, many of the ladies who were being "insulted" by Al were the ones who wrote the jokes being used. I know that the one in the pink blouse of the Häagen-Dazs joke was a stand-up comedian back in the day and made plenty of self deprivation jokes

I remember coming home one day after work and turning on the TV just in time to see the first ever episode of Some Mothers Do 'Av 'Em. Watched the full run of it. Then it was gone and I was starved for humor. I finally stumbled onto Married with Children and I was hooked. Al Bundy was every man's hero. A true role model. He could say and do no wrong. Laughed 'til I hurt. When MWC disappeared I found another to fill the void, Unhappily Ever After. Similar, but different enough. I liked it. It's been slim pickins since. This planet's in a different orbit. Snowflakes and pronouns. Gag me with a spoon.
It's really not all that different. Modern British comedy is just a British take on American comedy, which was a take on British comedy. What it comes down to is funny is funny, regardless of the region.
. I was in highschool from 1990 and graduated in '94, and this was hands down the most popular show for most of the kids I knew. I'm surprised there weren't any of the two part Byndys going to England episodes. I remember one of the referring jokes was with the guide "Winston," and Al kept mixing up his name with other cigarette brands.
The thing with Al was he picked on large women, and everyone else. But he also aired for the GenX generation. We didn't cater to people's feelings we were the ones who were told as kids that if it wasn't broken or gushing blood to shake it off and suck it up. Insults were a status and you learned to laugh at yourself so you could also laugh at others.
77' I had to wear hippy bell bottom hand me downs for the first few years of elementary. If I could only go back knowing what I know now, I could've spared myself a lot of grief but I probably never had partied with Coolio during spring break at South Padre island just because someone introduced us asked if I could get some good weed. A few pounds later I'm getting high with the most popular rapper in America at the time. Or I wouldn't have bumped into Nikki Six in New Orleans and end of getting wasted with him and his group till about noon the next day

The live audience reactions hooting and hollering was just as wild as the stories of the episodes! LOL. Married With Children is one of my all time favorite sitcoms of all time! Still HILARIOUS today in re-runs! Also realize the customers are just as obnoxious being demanding "Karens"and yes fat which deserves a good come back like Al Bundy gives them! :)
BP1, you're absolutely correct. Society is way too triggered anymore, and that is sad. A little factoid: Frank Sinatra sings the theme song Love and Marriage, originally recorded in 1955.
Oh come off it. Are there instances where people are too reactive and ready to take offense? Sure. But some changes HAD to happen. It's easy to be dismissive if you're not the person who traditionally was targeted. In the case of this show though, they made it clear what kind of show it was going in. People could, and should, have turned it off if they were offended. But that's not a fair assessment for everything and everyplace people said offensive things. If someone does promotion for a movie, let's say, and drops the N word, for example, or jokes how his Jewish agent is taking too much of his paycheck, or goes on a political rant... shouldn't they pay a price? It's all about context. Inside this show, risque jokes were in context. But people overall aren't just "too triggered". Sometimes it's just holding people responsible for saying stupid stuff. Again, it's where and how they say it.
I was 7 when this show came on. I saw a few episodes later on in my teens. I was a casual fan at the time. But last year I bought all 11 Seasons on DVD. Now I bust out laughing. Great show! Great show. Some background, Al always made fun of his neighbor Marcie by calling her a chicken. This explains the "cluck, cluck" and "beak job" jokes. I enjoyed your reaction.
I like how he was talking to Marcy and it said she shouldn't have crossed the road when she had a house across the road that was torn down due to a address error that the bundys was supposed to hand off a key to somebody else and then they ended up buying a house right next door😊
The classic Al Bundy "Winner" speech is an absolute must watch. For context it is directed at the school librarian that made his childhood absolute hell, taught him by accident to be the snappy comeback having asshole he is, and always told him he would be an amount to nothing loser in life. One of the greatest speeches ever in my opinion.
One that sticks out in my mind. Al comes home and finds a note from Pegg. It reads, AL, me and Kelly have gone shopping. Dinner is on the table. Al walk to kitchen, on the table is a can of soup and a can opener.😂
I got tickets and was in the audience for one of their tapings. Usually, they taped the show twice on a Friday night and selected the best scenes from both tapings. The audience was encouraged to be expressive. It's crude humor...but funny.
In Al's defense (sort of), many of the people he insulted either came in with aggressive attitudes, or were making his day miserable by their actions/words, and Al almost always loses in the end. I think you'd get a laugh out of the two episode story where the Bundys go to England. Either Season 6 or 7 I forget which.
Bill Oddie was in that one, a Village had to kill Al and Bud to break a curse of Darkness upon it, the neighboring village needed to kill them before they got there.

This was one funny show; Ed went on to star in Modern Family, which had some incredible one-liners. One of my favorite British shows was AbFab. I enjoy inappropriate comedy. A lot of Americans don't know the joy of those shows.
It's funny that when this show was broadcast in the US in the 90s, my parents would watch the re-runs of Are You Being Served? as it was broadcast on the public broadcasting networks.
I have such fond memories growing up, watching this show on sunday nights each week for several years with my sister and late mother. My favorite episodes was the story arc where the family travels to England. Good times and good laughs

I don’t know if you guys got The Cosby Show, the top show in the US in the late 80s, but it was this very idealized family with a doctor father and a lawyer mother. Anyhow Married With Children was originally conceived to be “the anti Cosby Show” and it quickly resonated with audiences. It’s high time for another show like this to absolutely trash the delicate sensibilities of modern audiences.

Seems like one joke might have went over your head, the one about lawyers. Here in the US it's a commercial thing where lawyers offices are usually pairs, like "If you need help call the law offices of So And So", the punchline was about ice cream (Hagen Daz). Most of the jokes where about hating his job and fat shaming (although the jokes were mostly written by the women/actors/comedians playing them), or sibling rivalry (see Kelly Bundy's insults to Bud), or Al making fun of his wife or neighbors wife. At the end they all took a bow together on stage, had a laugh, and cashed their checks. They way they were cancelled was uncalled for, they never even got a final episode.
I watched this show faithfully back in the late 80s early 90s. Al is my Hero ! It always reminded me of Benny Hill type humor, which is another one of favs. 🤣
Iv been watching Al Bundy for years I absolutely love that character as a UK resident this is definitely one of the best comedy,s to come out of America. The greatest line from this whole segment was? "Hey you're in my sun I'm trying to get an all over tan! "Well you're asking a lot of the Sun"! Then there was this one. " All that jumping in aerobics class my foot must have expanded"l Al replies I see you must have fallen on your butt a time or two "! .The customer then says " How dare you say that to my face"! Al’s final words are . " I'd say it behind your back but,my car only has a half a tank of gas"! Complete comedy gold! One of the greatest sitcoms of all time!

You nailed it! Back then people could laugh at themselves, without throwing a fit, or protesting! You can't say, or do anything anymore! People get upset, and cry the blues about every little thing! Trust me, those days were special, and much better, in a lot of ways! 👌 So glad I grew up then! I miss those days, but at least I got to live in them! 💪👍
Used to watch this show as a kid, it's still the best show I've ever seen. Episodes never got boring, and maintained that quality to the very end. There's so much more in this show to watch, these highlights are less than 1% of what's in it. Amazing show.
Ed O'neil actually hated making fun of the actors and being perverted around sexy women. He wasn't comfortable with the roll for years, but he delivered his lines masterfully. He was known to apologize to the women he'd interact with on set. Despite who he played, he is a real gentleman.
In Germany the name of the series was: A terribly nice family. It was the series that ran the longest with the most ratings. I was 12 when she first came and threw myself on the floor laughing. His jokes about people with too many pounds on their body or his attitude to life "everything is bad" were awesome. The series didn't do very well in the US. In the Germany of the 90 years it was a hit until 2003 I think. It is said that some seasons towards the end were only filmed for Germany and abroad because they ran so extremely well there. I still like to see you today and I'm really angry that this series will never go on. Animated ones are not an alternative! i want you back God we laughed! Al Bundy and Family back!
I was born in 84' and legit remember watching the very first few seasons as a kid and not really understanding anything at first cause obviously i was so young. But as I got older and kept watching reruns etc I began to understand and ironically its made me want to be sure that if i ever did get married it was to the right person. I distinctly remember asking my mom why they put slime across the Married part because I ws also absolutely OBSESSED with Ghostbusters and The Real Ghostbusters cartoon at the time. Her answer "I dont know" lol and that was the first lie from my mother that I can recall her ever telling me. Certainly wouldnt be the last but we dont get to pick and choose nor are we perfect
I loved watching the show and wished they had carried it a few more seasons. There is no way this kind of show would fly today. It's sad that so many people have lost their sense of humor.
One of my fave episodes is where Al gets the boys over to help with some renovations and one guy gets lost in the walls. It is a real shame that so many people these days are offended by so many things and have forgotten how to laugh. Thanx very much for sharing this video clip. Hilarious!
When there was a minor public outcry about this show being negative and bringing down the standards of American television and peddling to the least common denominator and all of that crap, they made an episode where Kelly auditions for a Fox sitcom and tells the director about her family. Their anti-Ozzie and Harriet lives wind up inspiring a pretend Fox series that is essentially Married with Children, and the Bundy family loves the show because they can relate. They were trying to say that the reason for the show's success wasn't because it was crude and stupid, but because lots of people have lives that kind of suck, and they can relate to Al, Peggy, and the kids. (S9.E9, if anyone cares)

My main motivation was making people laugh when I was a kid, and my mind instantly remembered how that particular joke made my parents laugh hysterically, my mother ended up choking on her iced tea. That episode had aired only a week or so before, so it was fresh in my mind when the fat teacher yelled that she’d had just about enough of me. I was also a very well behaved kid (my parents were from Sweden and very strict as far as manners and being nice), but this teacher just hated happy kids. Normally I didn’t talk back to her in class because I learned really quickly that she was nice to the kids if other teachers or the Principal were around, but once she had us alone with her and the door was shut, she’d be mean. She used to pick on shy or quiet kids until they cried, and she’d laugh at them. I do think parents complained about her, because once or twice a week the Principal or another teacher would sit in on one of our classes. Obviously she wasn’t going to act up with them there, so it was pointless. But that day in the auditorium with all the teachers and the Principal there, I had protection from her. So when I made that Al Bundy comment to her, I knew she couldn’t do much to me. I also said it in a very nice and polite way, just loud enough for everyone to hear. The auditorium had a cathedral ceiling so it echoed, which was even funnier. I became a legend after that, especially with the older “cool” kids who hated her.
What made me happy was seeing the teachers AND the Principal trying not to laugh, but they couldn’t help it.
Hello there. This series from the 80s is still a hit here in Germany. And no matter how bad we're doing, one episode of Al and we're going to be a whole lot better. Because we know... no one has it tougher than Al Bundy. On the other hand, we love Al's character. That charm, that sophistication... that passion... paired with his gestures and facial expressions... not to mention the sayings... it's a celebration. Al Bundy for President. This is one of the most consistently funny shows ever. Every single episode was hilarious. Especially when you know the characters and we're waiting on the joke you knew was coming. You didn't know exactly what it would be but you knew it would be great.
One of the running gags was Al calling Marcie either a chicken or a young boy.
Not every episode. This show had its losers occasionally. Not every show was "moon men have my socks" good. But even the lesser episodes still had a bright moment.
I've never gone back and watched it again, beyond the rerun here and there. But I remember not liking the final season or two. But even so, it remained a weekly staple for me from the time I was about 8 or 9. I didn't get all the jokes, but there was still a lot of stuff I loved. I have to put this on my list to rewatch.
I honestly found it to start going downhill with the introduction of the Seven kid. But the first few seasons were legendary.
IT honestly started running its course after season 5 or 6, it lost steam by then.
*This show was almost canceled after the first season. There wasn't a lot of advertising for it, nobody was watching it because they didn't know about it, and then some woman complained and started all these protests and went on talk shows to say how offensive it was. This got ppl curious, ppl started watching to see what it was all about and it shot to #1 and stayed there. This is one of the best and funniest shows ever!*

This is true but misleading. The boycott was lead by a woman (Terry Rakolta), but the boycott was a conservative boycott over sexual, violent, and some homosexual humor. Saying "some woman" complained makes it sound like it was some sort of boycott over the depiction of women, which it was not.

She got the ball rolling, she contacted advertisers, she went on the talk shows, etc..Sure it became more than the one topic she was whining about as well as political in some sense.. and sure, others got involved and were on her side. But it still began with just her having a fit about the bra episode. Either way, it never did anything but make the show popular and bolster rating. So thank you Terry. 👍

Then the ratings shot through the roof with Married with Children and their other shows were becoming more popular. I think that's why the show always made references to Fox being a horrible channel with awful shows.. kinda making fun of themselves.
I can't even see, tears are pouring down my face. I forgot how great all of the characters comedic timing was. I watched every episode and I now want to go back and watch them all again. Oh to go back to a time when people could take a joke. Thanks guys.😂😂✌

It's better to have physical copies, they can't alter it that way. Disney has been altering the shows and movies they acquired from their acquisition of Fox for both Disney+ and Hulu as well as for the movies they are re-releasing on blu-ray.

This show was unprecedented, it was the first time such brutal lines were spoken on a prime time sitcom. The only other sitcoms that parallel it are "All In The Family", with the Archie Bunker character, and "Sanford & Son" with Redd Fox's character. Funny as hell, MWC quickly became my favorite show to watch growing up, and I miss shows like this. It didn't hold back.

Honestly, as a heavy woman myself, I still burst out laughing at this show. 😂 I was only 7 years old when the show started airing and I didn't really watch much of it then. It was only when I caught the reruns as a teenager that I appreciated it and I was always a heavier gal (though less heavy back then) and I never got offended at it. It's COMEDY! Most comedy is about making fun of people for one thing or another. I don't understand why people are such delicate snowflakes these days. 😅

Al Bundy was one in a million. I wondered how you guys would like this considering British humor is a little different
different in some ways, but i imagine similar in others.
I remember coming home one day after work and turning on the TV just in time to see the first ever episode of Some Mothers Do 'Av 'Em. Watched the full run of it. Then it was gone and I was starved for humor. I finally stumbled onto Married with Children and I was hooked. Al Bundy was every man's hero. A true role model. He could say and do no wrong. Laughed 'til I hurt. When MWC disappeared I found another to fill the void, Unhappily Ever After. Similar, but different enough. I liked it. It's been slim pickins since. This planet's in a different orbit. Snowflakes and pronouns. Gag me with a spoon.
It's really not all that different. Modern British comedy is just a British take on American comedy, which was a take on British comedy.
What it comes down to is funny is funny, regardless of the region.

I'm surprised there weren't any of the two part Byndys going to England episodes. I remember one of the referring jokes was with the guide "Winston," and Al kept mixing up his name with other cigarette brands.

Whenever I need a good laugh I watch the best of Al Bundy and everything is right with the world again.
The thing with Al was he picked on large women, and everyone else. But he also aired for the GenX generation. We didn't cater to people's feelings we were the ones who were told as kids that if it wasn't broken or gushing blood to shake it off and suck it up. Insults were a status and you learned to laugh at yourself so you could also laugh at others.

77' I had to wear hippy bell bottom hand me downs for the first few years of elementary. If I could only go back knowing what I know now, I could've spared myself a lot of grief but I probably never had partied with Coolio during spring break at South Padre island just because someone introduced us asked if I could get some good weed. A few pounds later I'm getting high with the most popular rapper in America at the time. Or I wouldn't have bumped into Nikki Six in New Orleans and end of getting wasted with him and his group till about noon the next

The live audience reactions hooting and hollering was just as wild as the stories of the episodes! LOL. Married With Children is one of my all time favorite sitcoms of all time! Still HILARIOUS today in re-runs! Also realize the customers are just as obnoxious being demanding "Karens"and yes fat which deserves a good come back like Al Bundy gives them! :)

Oh come off it. Are there instances where people are too reactive and ready to take offense? Sure. But some changes HAD to happen. It's easy to be dismissive if you're not the person who traditionally was targeted.
In the case of this show though, they made it clear what kind of show it was going in. People could, and should, have turned it off if they were offended. But that's not a fair assessment for everything and everyplace people said offensive things. If someone does promotion for a movie, let's say, and drops the N word, for example, or jokes how his Jewish agent is taking too much of his paycheck, or goes on a political rant... shouldn't they pay a price? It's all about context. Inside this show, risque jokes were in context. But people overall aren't just "too triggered". Sometimes it's just holding people responsible for saying stupid stuff. Again, it's where and how they say it.
I was 7 when this show came on. I saw a few episodes later on in my teens. I was a casual fan at the time. But last year I bought all 11 Seasons on DVD. Now I bust out laughing. Great show!

The classic Al Bundy "Winner" speech is an absolute must watch.
For context it is directed at the school librarian that made his childhood absolute hell, taught him by accident to be the snappy comeback having asshole he is, and always told him he would be an amount to nothing loser in life.

I got tickets and was in the audience for one of their tapings. Usually, they taped the show twice on a Friday night and selected the best scenes from both tapings. The audience was encouraged to be expressive. It's crude humor...but funny.

In Al's defense (sort of), many of the people he insulted either came in with aggressive attitudes, or were making his day miserable by their actions/words, and Al almost always loses in the end. I think you'd get a laugh out of the two episode story where the Bundys go to England. Either Season 6 or 7 I forget which.

Bill Oddie was in that one, a Village had to kill Al and Bud to break a curse of Darkness upon it, the neighboring village needed to kill them before they got there.

This was one funny show; Ed went on to star in Modern Family, which had some incredible one-liners. One of my favorite British shows was AbFab. I enjoy inappropriate comedy. A lot of Americans don't know the joy of those shows.
It's funny that when this show was broadcast in the US in the 90s, my parents would watch the re-runs of Are You Being Served? as it was broadcast on the public broadcasting networks.
I wish we had gotten a lot more of the British shows over here, it was few and far between.

I don’t know if you guys got The Cosby Show, the top show in the US in the late 80s, but it was this very idealized family with a doctor father and a lawyer mother. Anyhow Married With Children was originally conceived to be “the anti Cosby Show” and it quickly resonated with audiences. It’s high time for another show like this to absolutely trash the delicate sensibilities of modern audiences.

Seems like one joke might have went over your head, the one about lawyers. Here in the US it's a commercial thing where lawyers offices are usually pairs, like "If you need help call the law offices of So And So", the punchline was about ice cream (Hagen Daz).
Most of the jokes where about hating his job and fat shaming (although the jokes were mostly written by the women/actors/comedians playing them), or sibling rivalry (see Kelly Bundy's insults to Bud), or Al making fun of his wife or neighbors wife.
At the end they all took a bow together on stage, had a laugh, and cashed their checks.
They way they were cancelled was uncalled for, they never even got a final episode.

When the jokes were translated into Spanish, some got lost in the process. But Al Bundy's gestures made him hilarious.

You nailed it! Back then people could laugh at themselves, without throwing a fit, or protesting! You can't say, or do anything anymore! People get upset, and cry the blues about every little thing! Used to watch this show as a kid, it's still the best show I've ever seen. Episodes never got boring, and maintained that quality to the very end. There's so much more in this show to watch, these highlights are less than 1% of what's in it. Amazing show.
Not really, there were definitely some very weak spots, like Seven, and when Marcie and Peg were both pregnant, ug.
Ed O'neil actually hated making fun of the actors and being perverted around sexy women. He wasn't comfortable with the roll for years, but he delivered his lines masterfully. He was known to apologize to the women he'd interact with on set. Despite who he played, he is a real gentleman.

In Germany the name of the series was: A terribly nice family. It was the series that ran the longest with the most ratings. I was 12 when she first came and threw myself on the floor laughing. His jokes about people with too many pounds on their body or his attitude to life "everything is bad" were awesome. The series didn't do very well in the US. In the Germany of the 90 years it was a hit until 2003 I think. It is said that some seasons towards the end were only filmed for Germany and abroad because they ran so extremely well there. I still like to see you today and I'm really angry that this series will never go on. Animated ones are not an alternative! i want you back God we laughed! Al Bundy and Family back!

I was born in 84' and legit remember watching the very first few seasons as a kid and not really understanding anything at first cause obviously i was so young. But as I got older and kept watching reruns etc I began to understand and ironically its made me want to be sure that if i ever did get married it was to the right person. I distinctly remember asking my mom why they put slime across the Married part because I ws also absolutely OBSESSED with Ghostbusters and The Real Ghostbusters cartoon at the time. Her answer "I dont know" lol and that was the first lie from my mother that I can recall her ever telling me. Certainly wouldnt be the last but we dont get to pick and choose nor are we perfect

When there was a minor public outcry about this show being negative and bringing down the standards of American television and peddling to the least common denominator and all of that crap, they made an episode where Kelly auditions for a Fox sitcom and tells the director about her family. Their anti-Ozzie and Harriet lives wind up inspiring a pretend Fox series that is essentially Married with Children, and the Bundy family loves the show because they can relate. They were trying to say that the reason for the show's success wasn't because it was crude and stupid, but because lots of people have lives that kind of suck, and they can relate to Al, Peggy, and the kids. (S9.E9, if anyone cares)
Compiling all these insults together is just too much funny in a short period of time
