Judith Durham AO 3rd July 1943 - 5th August 2022. Thank you and the boys in the band for all of your music. Such a special voice. Just read a quote "We know we'll never find another you". May you Rest In Peace ma'am.
So sad that Judith Durham died yesterday here in Melbourne, Australia. A great loss. Her voice was pure and resonant. Like a bell. I was so lucky to see The Seekers in concert. ❤️
What a loss, the carnival is over! Judith stayed at the hotel my mum & l worked at in Mentone, & she would come down to the kitchen asking for the broccoli🥦water.. Lovely lady ~ R.I.P🍃🕊🍃
@garymartin1040 sorry sport, Karen wasn't even close. Go listen to Judiths album, Judith Durham and The Hottest Band In Town, Judith singing her first love, Jazz. Karen couldn't have even hoped to sing like that!
One thing I just was compelled to mention. Fil, you had the grace to allow the beautiful performance to play through without stop. The "flavor" of her voice is quite reflective of singers from that generation. We the Boomers, have mothers that always seemed to have that gift. What a lovely legacy of style to hold true in all music for all times. Cheers man.
I've always disliked this song until now. It's beautiful. Joe Feeney always ruined it when he sang it on Lawrence Welk. The song does lend itself to a female voice rather than a gut busting Irish tenor.
Judith is one of the top female vocalists of my lifetime. Her voice has such a pure, crystalline quality, yet is also very powerful. I never tire of her beautiful tone. I always thought she sounded pitch-perfect, & the graph seems to bear that out.🥰
Absolutely right Mary. I love her…. Australia loves her. With Eva Cassidy and Karen Carpenter the most pure and beautiful voice you’ll ever hear. Sadly, we’ve lost them all….
It is a tribute to the great ( and absolutely lovely) Judith Durham that her remarkable voice became the object of this fully professional analysis. As a fan of Judith I wish to thank you for this work.
Thank you for spotlighting Judith Durham, my favorite vocalist ever. It's a shame that Americans had such restricted exposure to The Seekers back in the 60s, mostly due to their manager's lack of promotion. They've been my favorite group for nearly 60 years. Even their 50th Anniversary Reunion concerts were incredible, with many saying they sounded even BETTER than they had in the 60s!
I agree completely. I'm an 89 year old American that has heard them all, and I believe that the Seekers are the best, in large part because of Judith's voice. May she rest in peace.
She uses her vibrato to break her ascending and descending slurs into steps that are equal in terms of both pitch-change and length of time. The vibrato-slurs begin and end on time. Superb!
Such a beautifully polished voice, open throated and consistent through the whole range. I love to hear a singer who sings through the consonants. The emotion and meaning is all there in the phrasing and attention to the way the words flow with the music. Breaks your heart without any excessive gestures or exaggeration, the art of a truly fine singer.
In the years just prior to her death it was clear that time and poor health had finally taken its toll on Judiths voice, as they would with anybody ..... but this lady was undoubtedly one of the finest singers ever to grace this planet, she had truly outstanding vocals as this video clearly shows.
Judith Durham was our National Treasure. the Seekers actually pipped the Beatles and the Sones in 1969 with " Georgy Girl". She was magnifient. My Dad would have tears listening to " The Carnival is Over". Not bad for a bunch of Aussies wgo had to work their way on a Fairstar ship to get to England. Sadly, Judith passed last year. What a voice. They were all good. BTW I taught guy Athol how to string his Gibson 12 string- another story. Nice to see a youngster like you recognising elderly talent Fil. She was still perfect in her last performances.
A fascinating tribute to one of the great female singers. What a talent she was - I heard her live in 1966, 1971and 2013! She makes it look all so effortless in this clip.
The beauty of this wonderful girl and her voice is now lost. I fell in love with her when I saw her singing in the studio with her hands on her hips like she had the 'attitude' going while she sang. Rest in Peace, lovely woman.
Australia's first great gift to modern music. Judith is a National treasure and the Seekers were the first group to achieve international success from Down Under.
Judith Durham has died and I can't watch this without tears filling my eyes. Thank you for sharing her brilliance and artistry in this video. There will never be another singer like her.
Thanks Fil. Another brilliant choice of singer and analysis. I love Judith Durhams voice. Can you believe she didn’t think she was beautiful? She was stunningly beautiful and charming.
I'll be honest, Judith Durham's voice is just as beautiful as Karen Carpenter's voice was, This song, "Danny Boy" is such a beautiful, emotional song, it brought a tear to my eye and it did remind me of Judy Garland's song, "Somewhere over the Rainbow." It was another awesome analysis! Thank you, Fil! 😉👍🏻💕
@Pixie Pete definitely, Judith is in a class all of her own. Sorry but Karen is mediocre, not a huge range, no power, and not Judith's crystalline quality.
@Pixie Pete have you actually ever heard Judith sing classical,? She was classical trained. Also go listen to her sing Jazz, just wow! I would say that Judith's biggest asset, apart from being gorgeous, and that voice, is her ability to truly put a part of herself into any song, and the absolute look of joy on her face. But I do take your point, the only one I personally rank with Judith is Dame Shirley!
@Pixie Pete she didn't sing a lot of classical, but was trained. Oh, nope, sometimes there is no one better,as in Judith, Jimmy Page, or Eddy Merckx! As to those letters, what do you mean fratrernising with an Angel, crikey I'm bloody jealous!
I am watching this, with misty eyes, in Melbourne, Judith's hometown, a few days after her death. I grew up listening to this beautiful, angelic voice, a voice all the more remarkable when one knows she suffered from a chronic lung disease (bronchiectasis) from childhood. Thank you for your sensitive and informative analysis. Watching this today, there is an added poignancy because we heard the sad news of the death of another Aussie (albeit born in England) singer, Olivia Newton-John, whose voice you have also analysed in another brilliant video. Thank you for these wonderful insights and analyses.
Manuel Hrasky...Agreed Judith's pure and soaring vocals will be sadly missed. What a sad week that Australia has lost two of their: beautiful, exquisite, unforgettable and irreplaceable music legends. RIL and peace Judith and Olivia.
I learned that she passed the day after it happened last August. I'm still mourning the loss of that incredible voice. I'm so glad I have all the Seekers albums from the very beginning. She died of a lung problem that she had for years and years. Very sad.
5/8/2022. The legend has passed. I knew this day would come, as it does for all of us, but it's still such a shock and so sad. Judith's incredible voice helped heal me and I will always be grateful for that. Condolences to Judith's loved ones, especially Athol, Keith, and Bruce. Thank you for music, Judith. Rest in Peace.
Judith captures the meloncoly of Ireland. She has sadly left us. We will miss her wonderful voice but most all we will miss dear Judith as a person. X.
Thank you so much for explaining and illustrating what we can hear for musical illiterates like me! What a beautiful and talented lady Judith Durham was.
Vale Judith Durham. No one will ever replace you, You were a very special person who dealt with tragedy and heartbreak but never stopped smiling, an incredible vocalist, pianist, and performer who was an ambassador for Australia. I believe she is now performing in a better place reunited with her husband, thank you Judith Durham for the music and the memories you have given to so many millions of people all over the world.
@@riinak7212 I have this disease too after a bad lung infection after flu. The breathing tubes called bronchi in the lungs have been damaged, enlarged and scarred - primarily due to infection. These damaged air passages allow bacteria and mucus to build up and pool in your lungs. This results in frequent infections and blockages of the airways. It is not pleasant.
What a beautiful, moving performance. Her voice is a voice - and a kind of voice - from my childhood, so it carries that added poignancy for me. Such a pure and honest voice too. I am a dad and so hearing from Judith what the song is about - and I never knew that before - makes it even more moving. Thanks for this one Fil. Her voice is so beautiful to listen to. I believe the key to her vocal range is that she did not smoke or drank alcohol. She and the group The Seekers, Should be in the RRHOF. RIP Judith, Truly one of the best female vocalist of the 60's and up to her passing.
I love Judith Durham's singing. Another fabulous, interesting, information packed analysis, Fil! Thank you so much. She was such an integral part of the Seekers. Love their version of "I Am Australian" and I'm not Australian. lol! Shared!!
Just caught this today. I remember catching your analysis of a singer who was unhappy with the fact she was autotuned, (or maybe you were) and I had just watched your analysis of The Seekers on Ed Sullivan. I said at the time it would be interesting to analyse Judith’s voice, and here it is. As an (almost) lifelong fan of The Seekers, I am so glad YT gives us a chance to see these artists, even after they’re gone. Thank you Fil, and all the other contributors who keep the memories of these artists alive.
All your videos are good, but the result is super special when they illustrate a performance as uniquely superlative as this. What a treasure she was. Thank you.
Fil, thank you for such a fine analysis. You have the very rare gift of making the listener feel as knowledgeable about the subject as you yourself are.
Beautiful Judith, a true Angel and we in in Australia as many around the world will mourn her passing a huge loss, along with our Livy, two national treasures and Aussie Icons. RIP
She was a beautiful lady with an astounding singing voice... To loose her and Olivia Newton-John just a few days apart is heartbreaking... RIP Judith and Olivia
Just beautiful. Whilst I never performed with Judith, I’ve had the privilege to perform many times with her sister Beverley. Very similar ranges and styles. RIP Judith. ❤️
Judith didn’t even know how good she was - so humble - when she sang everything stopped - time included - If she pushed her career would have been one of the best ever - RIP
Judith's voice is a gift from nature to her, and her performances are gifts from her to us. She is one of the greatest singers not only of her own time, but of all times.
I just read the sad news that Judith Durham has died at age 79, Rest in Peace Judith Durham Thanks for all the great recordings with and without the Seekers, television performances and films you left behind. 3 July 1943 - 5 August 2022
It’s so incredibly rare to find an artist who is basically pitch perfect throughout their entire range, and that is so pleasant to hear by itself. But combine that not only with an amazing tone and resonance, but also a vibrato frequency that is in that very narrow range that is in the comfort zone, and you have a voice which literally flows through you, and warms your soul. You can close yours, lie back and simply get lost in Judith’s voice.
Judith Durham has one of the purest voices in Australian music. Fun fact: she and my mother both caught measles in the 1940s Melbourne epidemic, and developed bronchiectasis, which affects the lungs. Despite this, Judith's voice was unparalleled.
If Karen Carpenter was the female voice of the '70s, Durham was surely the voice of the '60s. So unique and wonderful. EDIT: may I suggest a two-parter featuring Engelbert and Tom Jones? 2nd EDIT: they played Danny Boy at my father in law's funeral (a proud Mick if there ever was one). Not a dry eye in the church.
Karen the female voice of the 70's, what rubbish. Agnetha Falstog has a better voice, Ronstadt, Claire Torrey, there are many better than karen who didn't have much range or power, sorry don't mean to offend, just trying to be factual.
The Seekers were a great Australian folk pop band from the 60's. And Judith had such a beautiful voice. They had so many great hits including "I'll Never Find Another You", "A World Of Our Own", "Georgy Girl", "The Carnival Is Over", "Morningtown Ride", "Someday, One Day" etc. They have beautiful voices & harmonies. They don't make nostalgic music like this anymore. Reminds me of a simpler time.
Fil, Australians have been gutted by a Judith’s recent death. I feel that I’ve known The Seekers (and obviously Judith’s voice), all my life even though I’ve never seen them live. I used to listen to their cassettes and records when I was a very young child to help with my anxiety. I’m an Aussie in my 50s …so they’ve been around for a long time❤️
Have adored Judith almost all my life. She had the most amazing voice and delivery. Loved this breakdown (& the one for the Seekers that I saw previously). Such a beautiful voice and tone. So glad we had her for so many years. First song I every learned to sing all the way thru was Morning Town Ride when I was about 7 or 8 years old. The Seekers were such a huge part of my childhood music listening, and I never tired of listening to them.
Excellent analysis of Judith's voice, she had a voice a vocal could not teach anything to. First time I heard this version, by the end my eyes were wet for some reason? In the gospel song "When the stars begin to fall" she hits a F# above high C effortlessly. Just an amazing voice, glad you covered her, love the channel.
Dear Judith, sleep now in God's warm embrace. Thank you for your music, style, and grace. They carry on as our gift through the ages. Your beautiful voice, recorded for all time, will never die. You will always be remembered as ageless . RIP.
I So appreciate your detailed analysis of Judith's sweet skilled vocal treatment of this song, in light of her passing Friday August 5th, 2022. With an arrangement that avoids being over-the-top, now I can understand WHY I love her distinct voice and her technical abilities. Thanks Fil!
I learn SO much about music watching your analysis videos. As someone who is not a musician but loves music, the education I am getting from you is helping me appreciate performers more and more. Thank you! (I know everyone is hype for the pitch analysis but I'd love for you to analyze voices that are unusual/distinctive - Blossom Dearie or Amy Winehouse come to mind - to explain WHY they so special? Just a suggestion! I love what you do!)
Well done Fil for recognising the talent of Judith Durham. You have a real instinct for talent regardless of genres or fashion. Judith Durham could sing the phone book and you’d want to listen right to the end.
At last i know analytically why i have always been in awe of her voice since i first heard her in the 60s. I am in US, had not seen them, and assumed they had at least two female singers!. You have excellent explanations to a non-musical audience (me). You do an astounding job of illustrating features with your own voice!
It’s February 26 - 2023 . I’m just watching this an hour after I heard Judith passed away. Tragic news . Her voice goes right to your heart . I think Fil may have even felt this emotionally . The Seekers had this rare way of arranging, and Judith singing uptempo songs with very sad lyrics - if you reflect on them - “ I’ll Never Find Another You “ and “ Georgy Girl “ ( I know I’m a natural born pessimist ) RIP JD
Thanks for your visual graphics for an "analog" topic. She has a gorgeous voice. And your vocal emphasis really supplemented the graphs. You have a gift of how to relate what we hear to an oscilloscope shows.
I still listen to Judith's lovely voice and the great backup harmonies of the Seekers at least a few times each month. Anyone who brought that much joy to the world over the decades will surely be allowed to Rest In Peace.
I cried when I heard that Judith had passed us by. This song really brings out the range and beauty of her voice. Hers' is a voice that is distinctively, and unmistakably, all her own.
Actually what you have explained are things we as fans know and listen too but we do not know why. We get so drawn in by her voice and cannot stop enjoying her from the start of each song she sings all the way to the end of the song. She is going to be so missed.
The members of the Seekers must have had their minds totally blown when they first heard this young girl sing. I never get tired of hearing her rare voice, like Patsy Cline, Linda Ronstadt and Allison Krauss. One of the most unacknowledged and underrated singers.
Delightful Fil! These last few days with Judith's recent passing, I have been revisiting the music of the Seekers. Having been a teen during the period of their early success in the mid-sixties, it is so nice to listen to your assessment in both videos you have of them! Wonderful analysis! Thank you!
Just read that Judith died - this makes the song all the more poignant. Her voice was and still is clear as a bell. RIP, Judith, we will never find another you.

Much agreed, go with God. She has earned her rest and heaven
It ‘s true, the other of the group where dependant of her.
Absolutely flawless. How can anyone not be in awe of Judith’s talent.
she sounds like a sac of cats being beat to death with a set of bagpipes

Rest in peace dearest Judith.
The last chance I got to see The Seekers live was their 2014 Liverpool performance.
What really hit home with me was finally seeing Judith's diminutive physical stature live on stage. Such a delicate, tiny little morsel of humanity, showing the strength and determination to continue on with a farewell tour after all she had been through .... That alone left me spellbound.

She is one of the greatest singers not only of her own time, but of all times.
RIP Judith.
Her singing this song almost brings a tear to the eye.
Phil is such a great analyst and teacher. I am in tears because, as others here, I read that Judith Durham recently died. Such a dazzling talent.
One of my favourite versions of Danny Boy..goosebumps! The Carnival is Over always "gets" me..so poignant.
I just read the sad news that Judith Durham has died at age 79, Rest in Peace Judith Durham Thanks for all the great recordings with and without the Seekers, television performances and films you left behind. 3 July 1943 - 5 August 2022
Just lovely. The song always brings me to tears and Judith sang this song perfectly. Thanks Fil
I only found out about this after her death. Which makes her voice even more special. Thank you, I was wondering what caused her lung disease.
That would be epic
Karen the female voice of the 70's, what rubbish. Agnetha Falstog has a better voice, Ronstadt, Claire Torrey, there are many better than karen who didn't have much range or power, sorry don't mean to offend, just trying to be factual.
The most sensitive pitch analysis equipment available,my ears are telling me that she cannot be bettered by anyone today. Perfection.
They don’t they’re iconic
I didn't know that Judith Durham was the voice of all those hits like Georgy Girl, The seekers, I'll never Find Another You. Wow. Fabulous.🔥🔥🔥🔥💞
I feel the same way. Fil definitely has the heart of a teacher. And the talent to go with it.
Well done Fil for recognising the talent of Judith Durham. You have a real instinct for talent regardless of genres or fashion. Judith Durham could sing the phone book and you’d want to listen right to the end.
Our Aussie. THE most beautiful voice and singer
I love this lady. I will always cherish her magic.
Beautiful!! Fil, I’m always pulled between listening/watching the performer and watching for your smile when they hit the sweet spots! Thanks again!!
You know something great is happening by waiting for those smiles - I hope he doesn't play poker.
@@coldlakealta4043 lol. You got that right!!
I know exactly what you mean. I know exactly when to glance over to share the joy. 👍
@@just_passing_through Exactly!! lol reminds me why I love music so much.
I have just read a press release that tells us that we have lost Judith Durham to Heaven. So sad but my thanks to you, Judith. R.I.P Geoff x
I must say I was impressed with your own renditions of the vibrato notes Fil.
Adore Judith. Lovely person and voice. Seekers always made me so happy!
Love Judith Durham's voice, she is the perfect study for any aspiring singers
RIP, Judith. Thanks for the beautiful music.
Actually what you have explained are things we as fans know and listen too but we do not know why. We get so drawn in by her voice and cannot stop enjoying her from the start of each song she sings all the way to the end of the song. She is going to be so missed.
6.8.22 Just heard that this darling woman has passed away. What a loss. Such a lovely woman and an amazing voice. So very sad.
I've revisited this analysis again Fil, because unfortunately this velvet angel voice passed away a few days ago. 😥💔🕊
The members of the Seekers must have had their minds totally blown when they first heard this young girl sing. I never get tired of hearing her rare voice, like Patsy Cline, Linda Ronstadt and Allison Krauss. One of the most unacknowledged and underrated singers.
Such a beautiful voice. RIP Judith.
Delightful Fil! These last few days with Judith's recent passing, I have been revisiting the music of the Seekers. Having been a teen during the period of their early success in the mid-sixties, it is so nice to listen to your assessment in both videos you have of them! Wonderful analysis! Thank you!
Should analyse her singing "When the Stars Begin to Fall" when the Seekers were entertaing o the Fairsky.
A beautiful lady with the voice of an angel. I am glad that I was able to witness her incredible talent in my youth.
RIP Judith
Judith was my first crush. I listen to her music still. She will be sorely missed.❤
Rest In Peace...Our Beautiful Judith x
Thank you for continuing to give your insights into another classic song 🎵 💖
such a pleasure to listen.
Such a talented person! A true gift! Blessed to listen to her magnificent voice through the years.
