Although, let's be honest... I think plenty of men would have been unnerved by that discovery too. But it worked for his character, and especially worked to momentarily let us breathe and have a laugh between tense scenes.

      @CWS and TKP 66-02 I dont understand your comment, youre acting as if the joke is bad for those reasons, but youre literally just explaining the point and function of the joke, like yeah thats the joke its ironic thats why its funny because instead of being concerned with the rape dungeon hes more concerned with measuring more square footage so he can sell the house for more money, the joke is that he's a bad person who is too ignorant to acknowledge or care about the dungeon and he only cares about his own personal gain, yet hes unknowingly getting lead into a confrontation with a terrifying monster.

      PEOPLE HAD A GREAT TIME WATCHING THIS FILM , Barbarian marks the auspicious feature film debut of director-writer Zach Cregger, someone well-versed in film tropes and with a subtle skill at social satire approaching Jordan Peele levels. He will also somehow make you laugh hard.
      It's simple - Barbarian is the best horror film of 2022. If you’re a genre fan, won’t find a wilder ride this year, guaranteed. Wildly entertaining while maintaining a strong horror underbelly, Barbarian is one of the surprise hits of the year! 2022 has been strong year for horror films but Babarian maybe top of the list

The score builds you up the tension and the sound design lets you hear just enough to make you nervous but also makes the sound low enough that you really have to pay attention to be drawn into so you can confirm what you think you’re hearing. This is one of my favorite of the year for sure.

    Your story reminds me that someone brought 3 children that looked younger than 10 years old to The Black Phone when I saw it. The Black Phone wasn’t super scary (other than a few hard-to-watch scenes). I would’ve probably been okay watching it as a kid, but it was clear that these kids were not ready for the movie. They had to leave after lots of screaming and crying. I’m not saying that it’s bad parenting to allow your child to watch horror movies, but it has to be on their terms and limits.

    I actually have very mixed feelings about this movie.
    I am a very big fan of horror, and this year I absolutely loved X and Bodies x3 and I was very, very excited about this movie because the trailer looked very appealing to me.
    First of all, let me say that there might be some SPOILERS in my comment, so IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THIS MOVIE, STOP READING. Second of all: English is not my first language. I think myself as fluent but I can miss some stuff when I go to the movies with no subtitles (I live in Western Canada), so maybe there are some details I missed, so if you feel like some of the stuff I'm questioning are being said during the movie, please let me know, I might have missed it.
    Okay, let's go;
    I totally agree with you: the trailer was really perfect. I've only seen the first trailer and I'm never looking to see more, because trailers ruin everything but I think this one was really, really smart because it gave away mostly just the first 45min of the movie, which is great because I wasn't expecting that.
    I loved the changed of tone; to me, the first 20min started more with a romantic tone, because the two main characters like each other, despite the fact that Tess is very suspicious at first (which is fair). Then, the tone changes when she discovers the basement and I really loved this part because I felt like her reactions were very relatable and not the reactions of a typical 'horror character' who is going to look for trouble, even if it is not something any descent human being would do. When she opens the secret door and says "nope", I really loved that because I think 90% of people would have this reaction. Also, Georgina Campbell and (no surprises) Bill Skarsgård's acting were absolutely phenomenal. The music was also great. I was really into the movie and I think the directing was also really, really good. And then, it all stops to go to AJ's storyline, which was very unexpected. My first reaction was "what the fuck ?", because to me, it broke the pace and I didn't really get it but then, I thought it was smart because as the tension was climaxing in the basement, they cut to go to a "normal" story; it felt like a roller coaster, and I think it was great, because it threw the viewer off balance. The comedy brought by AJ's character was fun and I enjoyed it, but I'm not sure I liked the movie when Tess decides to go back to the house to save AJ: as Tess was making kind of rational decisions at the beginning, I thought this decision didn't make sense: she was proven at the beginning of the movie that going back to be the "savior" was a bad idea, when Keith got killed and she had been made prisoner. Why going back to save a total stranger? I can understand why she'd want to go get Keith back, but AJ?
    Also, my main complaint would be about the flashback from the 80's (I think? They were talking about Reagan on the radio, so I assume it was the 80's): they started to show us a potential "origin story" so that we could understand what was that thing in the basement but it was totally useless, because yes: it made us understand Richard was a serial killer, but it didn't bring much to the story. It probably would have been interesting to understand the origin story as AJ walks into Richard's room with all the VHS. I also still don't understand what that thing really was in the basement and I feel a little frustrated not knowing what it was.
    And finally, I thought the 10 last minutes were just.. ridiculous. The way the homeless guy dies seems just so.. shoddy, the shot where Tess was falling; the shot where that "lady thing" was jumping to catch her.. it just felt off for some reason.
    I liked the idea, though: AJ was an abuser, and even though he said he wanted to fix the mistakes he had done in the past, he showed that an abuser will stay an abuser all their life by saving himself and pushing Tess.
    I don't know.. there is a lot of stuff I loved about this movie: the actors were great, the music was great, the horror was great (except for the last 10-15min) but I think I was mainly disappointed by the ending and the lack of answer. Most of the movie had so many qualities that were suddenly swept away in the end.
    Also, I agree with you: I don't like the title.
    Not sure anyone will take the time to read such a long comment, but I had to talk about it and none of my friends are into horror so, had to let this out of my chest!

      @highpr13stess 2 года назад +11

      Hi! I know you wrote this a month ago but I just watched the movie and I want to add one thing! This movie definitely played into the “woman savior complex” because Tess felt like she constantly had to save the men around her - this was shown when she was talking to Keith in the beginning and she was saying she “always goes back” to bad guys. I think this is why she went back for AJ. She felt like she needed to save people, which I definitely relate to 😅

      Hi! I just read your comment and I just wanted to say that I 100% agree with you. The movie was fun and I can't say it bored me in any given moment, but I also thought that the flashback to the 80s was a bit unnecesary. While the time-shift was (very) cool, I don't think you need to take up 10-15 minutes of the movie to make clear that the guy is a serial killer/rapist. Other than that, I also believe that the ending was a little silly/clumsy and that it left a strange taste in my mouth, but oh well. Like I said, I don't regret watching the movie or anything like that (p.s: sorry if my English is not very good, is not my first language).

    I’ve been watching you for YEARS at this point, and I have to admit, I don’t really like horror but I think you’re very charming and entertaining! I clicked on this review because I hadn’t heard of the movie and was curious, and funnily enough a group of my friends were going to see it tonight. I am a big old baby, the first and only horror movies I’ve seen in theaters were the new IT movies (Bill Skarsgard is great lol I love him) and I literally cried because I was so scared. Dude, I hadn’t even seen a trailer but this review was enough for me to get the guts to see a horror movie in theaters and man…… nothing could have prepared me for this movie. I was so scared but it was so comedic in such a strange way and I wanted to laugh but like…. couldn’t because I was so scared. Absolutely loved this movie and may now finally be entering my horror movie era!!

    By far, one of the best horror movies I've seen. The end, could have used a smidge of tweaking, in my opinion, but overall, it's a must watch. Edge of the seat, whole time. Wish I would have scene it in theater, vs renting on my couch.

    I loved it too! I went with my friend and he said his only complaint was that there wasn't enough backstory on the serial killer character. I personally somewhat agree with that, but it was great without it too! They did kind of bait me with Scarsgaard but I'm not too mad about it. Loved the comedic aspect, and the fact that a lot of the more "disturbing" things happen to somebody that you may not entirely feel bad for. Makes the comedic aspects kind of reach further into the horror and it melts together beautifully! I was absolutely on the edge of my seat the whole time. I loved that they didn't get cheap with it, they actually poured a lot of background and writing into the characters. Added so much necessary depth that we honestly do not see a lot of nowadays.

    I agree with you on all the points you make in this review. The title, BARBARIAN, almost prevented me from seeing it. It was only early positive buzz from RUclipsrs like you, Mariana, and Chris that got me into the cinema. And the title must have prevented others from seeking it out as well, because I had the entire theatre auditorium to myself for the first showing on a Saturday morning. Which was good, because I screamed out loud a few times and shouted at the characters when they made questionable choices. The ending was a bit of a stretch, but didn't ruin the entire experience. This was a very creative horror, and I'm glad I saw it.

    Movie was absolutely amazing, in the beginning you think it’s Keith, you don’t know who is the barbarian and I love how the movie cuts into three different acts with three different people. I was blown away, I thought that Keith was the barbarian and didn’t know that this movie had so many juicy eerie details and some comical moments like Justin Long measuring the basement so he can make more money when he shouldn’t be down there because it’s super dirty and creepy there were funny moments like that but whoever wrote and directed this did it an amazing job, go out and see this!

    • @jspencer3088

      The act breaks were so jarring. SPOILERS: At the end of Keith & Tess’s story I somewhat expected credits to come up (it would have been appropriate if they had) but the clock inside my head knew the runtime of the film would have been too short to end it there, plus I was waiting for Justin Long. When the film switched to a different aspect ratio and colour palette was jarring as well. I’m not quite sure the film stuck the landing, but there’s a lot that it does really well.

    Just came from the theater and am rewatching your review and I gotta say I completely agree with every point you are hitting! As far as the title goes, I’m not sure if you caught it but the house is on Barbary street. Made me think it was a subtle play on a resident of Barbary being called a Barbarian. Not really a spoiler, but I wish there was an after credit scene where Tess gets a call saying she got the job. Would have been a nice cherry on top.

    I went into this movie with just the knowledge that Bill Skaarsgard was in it, didn’t even watch a trailer because he’s one of my “must watch” actors and I’m OVER movie trailers spoiling movies. (I had to look away during Pearl’s trailer because I’m trying so hard to go in blind). Oh yes was that a good decision to go in blind here. This movie was so so so good. The only comparable experience I’ve had that I can think of was when I watched “Come to Daddy” with Elijah Wood and it had that major twist that changed the film. I love the idea that this film is going to lure in conventional horror viewers with the trailer and then surprise them with the twists. Excellent review here btw, you hit the nail on the head with how I feel about this film too, just such a breath of fresh air!

    this movie scared and shocked me so much, it even has a jump scare with a warning, so actually, it wasn't a jumpscare, but it is so shocking that it does the same to the viewer. and it is also incredibly funny, unintentional. that one scene when that house owner was trapped and was forced to do something, inside a cage, I loled so much, my stomach still hurts. that scene and that dude - hilarious. great great great movie.

    Because of all the hype about how scary it is, I was really disappointed :( I think if I didn't see Emma's scare score of 9 and all the RUclips trailers are saying its the scariest movie ever, I would've liked it more? I did like the movie, it was really well done but after the first segment, the scares for me weren't there. The pacing was great but I really did feel like I was able to predict plot points. Im really sad that I wasn't as pumped about it after seeing it. However I will praise the tape measurer scene because I was not expecting that and it was the funniest bit I've seen in so long. I usually don't really like comic relief in movies. Its a really well done movie but I guess just not for me? Maybe like a 7/10. idk what's wrong with me lol. Love hearing your thoughts on this and Im really glad you liked it!

    The moment this film revealed the direction it was going, I leaned over to my wife and said "I'm gonna be super disappointed if THIS is what all the hype is about." What a lazy premise. The first 20 minutes was more atmospheric than the rest of the film. I'm putting this movie in the "how can we make people say WTF for as little money as possible?" category. The trailer draws a crowd because of who it promises is in it. If anything, the comedy in this was good. I laughed so hard at the measuring tape, the severed arm, and the nose dive.
