Same here. I haven't tried playing them yet after hearing about Neil. I know I won't make it to far in before losing it. These guys are why I even pick up a bass. Music and the possibilities of what it could be changed when I heard them for the first time.
@Eric I didn't get to see them live. I had the chance in 2012 and I messed up. They played in Indianapolis. I was living just south of there. I know Alex and Ged will do something together. It'll be awesome but bitter sweet without Neil. Just have to patiently wait. I wonder what other collaborations they will do in the future.
@EricI'm 57 and my favorite band since 1974 and thank God got to see them over 40 times... Neil God bless you and now your playing for everyone in Heaven..R.I. P. and thank you for your great performances...😟
Alex always said he played a certain way and used open chords to give the illusion that there’s more than one guitar playing because of how important a full sound is in a 3 piece band. Very brilliant and an absolute freakish player.
Must MUST MUST agree! He has NEVER gotten his due among the best! But after 43 years of them being my favorite band, I think I realize that they didn't care about their individual standing. They just wanted to be the TIGHTEST and BEST they could be! Off of each other. God bless them!!
This is the ultimate Rush song. Lyrics, Guitar, Bass, and Vocals. This is also possibly the best live performance of this song I have seen and I've seen them 14 times. Perhaps its because they are in their homeland. I LOVE THESE GUYS!! I'm 55, and they were the soundtrack of my life. Lets get it together ppl and LOVE one another. They surely loved us!!
When asked in an interview, Alex said Natural Science was a favorite Rush song to play but was also extremely demanding and difficult to play consistently.
Why do people keep saying this? Hes in a hugely successful rock band where there’s no other guitarist so obviously hes an important part. Many famous guitarists have praised him many times. Hes in a shit ton of guitar magazines and websites. He has guitar and amp sponsores. Idk where this idea that he’s underrated comes from.
Someone i would say is legit underrated is omar rodriguez lopes from mars volta, who alex and neil were a fan of. He rarely gets talked about. Absolutely incredible guitarist.
This is a perfect Rush song. Alex's guitar is at a frenetic pace, the drums are insane, you got time signature changes, and Geddy's voice and bass holding it all together. With most of your biggest pop bands, it's not that they WON'T do this......they CAN'T do this....not on their best day.
Neil never crossed "the line" of his drum kit and left that space for Geddy and Alex to do their thing. You can tell these guys were good friends in addition to band mates...

I saw this at the Spirit of Airwaves recording, the bootleg concert recording front row February 13th in St. Louis. Sat 15 away from Geddy and it was SO epic. I got those tickets by being the first caller to reach Dial-Tix when lines opened at 10am. This would not have happened if not for my mom letting me skip school to do so. By far my best concert ever
Simply amazing, I’m so glad I discovered this amazing group of guys. The fact that 3 people can get this amount of sound is incredible. I don’t think I’ll ever discover a band that top this.
90's = Neil at his peak. He had perfected his art while still being young or healthy enough to put a ridiculous amount of power behind his drumming. It baffles me how a kit could survive an entire tour with Peart or Bonham behind it. Two of the hardest hitters in drumming.
I’ve seen a video where he put the bass pedal through the drum skin. That should be impossible. They are designed very carefully and I can assure you that an incredible amount of years and research went into drums we know today. I met the man credited for developing them at my daughter’s music school in Boston. It is the oldest music school in America. How I would have loved to see the look on that man’s face the moment Neil’s pedal went through that bass drum.

Lucky you! The more I see of this show, the more I hope that someday they'll release a DVD of the entire show. Although it's hard to be definitive on a band who were such unrelenting perfectionists, I don't think they ever looked or sounded better. Not sure why it is coming out in bits and pieces. I believe the first half hour or so was a bonus on the R40 boxset, and then a couple more songs were on the bonus bonus R40 disc. Don't get me started on the R40 box, which I never bought, because it was asking a lot of those of us who already owned the other DVD's, to buy them again for the sake of a single bonus disc. And then I can only imagine the feelings of those fans who forked out for the R40, only to find out that there was a bonus bonus disc, which they didn't get unless they ordered it from the Backstage club. But then, I might get started......... oops too late.

Ryan Haydock a wee too laid back compared to the Permanent Waves/MP era though! I've heard the legendary St Louis 80 Superstars of Rock show/bootleg and back then Natural Science had an F'ing mind of its own😯😯😯 they could barely control & contain the damn thing💗😎💗

I was one of the first 25 people to get tickets to the Dec 13th show I believe it was but they sold out so quick they booked another then another, just so happened Kiel was available for 3 nights and they sold em all out. Geddy was yelling at us in the front rows, you guys are the originals, you'll get our best. Talk about full filling a promise or statement. That and Aftk weremy best concerts ever. Every song a monster
I still keep coming back to this one. One of the last great prog epic tunes Rush wrote, and one of the best! Sounds so good here as well, played to perfection. There will never be another!
This must be the ultimate prog metal song. Not sure Rush have ever bettered this, but then who has? The stunning power of it, the contrasts, the seamless shifting between weird time signatures, and of course the portentous, rather alienated lyric, all add up to something greater than the sum of its parts.
Chris, I also must have my "daily" RUSH !!! I saw 22 live shows over the years, starting with the Vapor Trails tour and would have preffered 122. I discovered Rush a bit late though... :-(
I'm the same way. Gotta have my daily dose of RUSH. Since Neil's passing, I've been through their catalog multiple times. IMO, they're the best band ever! All 3 guys, amazing musicians! RIP Neil....
40 days before Neil's life was turned upside down. Sad he's gone now. I cherish every concert of theirs I've been to, and wish there would have been more. Best group of guys, best musicians and artists in rock and roll.
All I can say is , "THANK YOU, Alex, Geddy, Neil for ALL the music and memories!! Was lucky enough to see them with friends and then my kids at least 5 times and was stoked to know this song was included in one of those concerts!! What a CLASS act!! Happiness in your quieter days ahead and thank you guys again!!!
This song, live and original, gives me chills every time I hear the opening verse with the full band. "Wheels within Wheels in a spiral array, a pattern so grand and complex. Time after time, we lose sight of our way, our causes can't see their effects..."
This is one of my favorite Rush songs. I remember hearing that Rush was going to play a song on the T4E tour that they had never played live. When my friend and I were on our way to the show, I told him if they played Natural Science it would make my life! When the song started, I almost didn't even recognize it because it shocked me to hear it live. What a great night that was and what a great show.
They also played it on Snakes & Arrows tour in 2007/2008. (Was) Always pumped to see it live. Awesome to see it and Jacob's Ladder on R40. It was definitely a high point of my life.
I don’t know when exactly they excised the verse (and added extra “wheels within wheels”) but this arrangement was standard for years before and evermore after.
@@paulsikes3515 This tour (TFE) was the first time they changed the arrangement, it was the first tour Natural Science was played since 1981. I don’t mind it but part of me really misses the “art as expression” verse with the guitar solo.
nEIL pEART the greatest drummer, lyricist, and creative artist in our times. Ya know I can really sympathize with Neil when he told the band he just didn't have the energy to do it anymore because he was battling cancer and being a drummer takes alot more physical energy than the rest of the band needed on an almost daily basis. RIP PROFFESSOR
The day after my 30th birthday (and what would have been my awesome Granny's 87th)! I was blessed to see them on my 40th at Red Rocks, there is no other band that I feel such a deep soul connection with. Thank you Snowdog for always giving me what I need with Rush ...it was my musical release during the pandemic!
I was at this show; an unbelievable night watching and hearing Rush live like this is one of the greatest concert experiences of my life! Long live Rush
In over 50 concerts I've seen, my very favorite moment of them all was this song, 1981, the fog machine was full blast with the magenta and green colored lights, and Alex Lifeson playing the 2nd guitar solo with his head cocked slightly to one side surrounded by the curling fog all lit up by spotlights, in his red dinner jacket, playing his blonde ES-345. That does it for me.
Rest easy Neil. Lifelong hero to myself, my dad, countless others. Absolutely devastated, can't imagine keeping brain cancer a secret battle for years but that just shows how private and humble he was. His music and words are immortal, thank you for everything.
Alex Lifeson ONLY SEEMS to be Under rated, BECAUSE HE IS PLAYING ALONG SIDE THE WORLDS BEST DRUMMER AND PROBABLY THE BEST ROCK BASSIST EVER !!! PS He is pretty good despite very bad arthritis problems in hands !!!!! Give it up for the best all around ROCK GUITARIST of all time !!!
Eddie Van Halen said when asked "What does it feel like to be the top Guitarist?" He replied, " I do not know, ask Alex Liefeson!!!" True story as reported by Rolling Stone Mag
FUCK YES! MY GUITAR HERO, and the reason i can play ANYTHING at all today.... Along with Elliot Easton and a pile of other killer players ... criminally underrated.
So privileged to have seen Rush live on the Time Machine Tour. Such gifted musicians and writers and so much humour. They looked so relaxed on stage blissfully unaware of the starstruck teenager grin on my 43 year old face.
Several years ago I saw Rush in concert, and they played Natural Science. I was absolutely stunned! Never had I ever witnessed such musicianship! They hit every note, every beat with such accuracy and authority, and at the end I had tears running down my face! I'm sure I wasn't the only one either! I had just witnessed the greatest band ever!
i had the exact same experience at the R30 tour with Xanadu.... in 25 yrs of shows id NEVEr heard them play Xanadu live Mind fucking BLOWN. it was just so goddamn perfect I cried like a little girl lol. I feel real pain when i think of how i missed the R40 tour.......;-(
Can I give that 100 thumbs up?! I had the pleasure of seeing them play this song when they came to Nashville on this tour which was sometime in the Summer of 1997. Of course this was also the tour where they played the whole first side of 2112! Not just the overture and the Temples of Syrinx but the whole enchilada!! Thank you Rush!!!
Saw them 3 times in the Northeast on this tour. Nailed this song each show. If that doesn't scream the extent of their talent, you either don't know what it takes to play it or you are deaf.
This song (for me), lyrically and musically, is one (of many) examples of how Rush excels at painting pictures of the life. Their wonder and awe of the reality that we exist in, inspired awe in wonder in me as a youth, and still does to this day.
Took my wife to this show. It was her first “live” RUSH. Blew her away! Molson Amphitheater in Toronto, same place I took her to for Supertramp and Floyd.
I sat next to Lerxst's family - the kid next to me had a college recommendation from Alex's father he said - was amazing - his Mom and Dad were like 4 seats from me - lol
Neil had a summer home not too far from Le Studio in the Larentian mountains in southern Quebec. He named a small rock island (1 of four that were on the lake) he had bought in the after years as a memento for his love of that mystical place he so loved. He named it "science island". He took his second daughter Olivia to that island to teach her about nature and natural science. RIP Neil you were an educator and professor to world.
Saw them play this live on the TFE tour and was like a little kid. They also played the full 2112 epoch including ’Dream’ for the first time live on this tour. The tempo on this performance is smokin’! 🫡🥇✊
This song is from Rush's very best album. Every song is good. Its such a perfect combination of strong guitar riffs, excellent songs, perfectly produced. Its that perfect combination of early Rush meets "pop" Rush.
Picking a best album from Rush is like picking a favorite food...:)...Permanent Waves is brilliant, true... but, Caress of Steel, 2112, Hemispheres, Farewell to kings ( my favorite), Moving Pictures or Signals are no less great...:)

Alex Lifeson said a few times in interviews that Natural Science is the most difficult Rush song for himself to play in concert and yet insisted on playing also in set lists. The precision, concentration, and raw energy of this song is simply amazing to behold live.
Been mourning all day.... My first concert was Rush Signals tour in '82. My first CD was Moving Pictures which I took to the local Circuit City store and played as loud as I could in the sound room. I have been a drummer on and off for 40 years and still struggle playing Rush, but I love trying! I remember drawing drumsets (always Neil's) when I was a kid and setting up my drumset like his. My kid who plays the drums have made lego drumsets with Neil. Neil you and your drumming inspired millions.
That was a great concert. It was the 3rd (and last) time that I saw these fine lads in Toronto. However, I am grateful for having saw the R40 show in Chicago.
I don't care what people say, this is Rush in their prime. No, they didn't write the best albums in the 90s but their live performances were at their peak of experience and presentation. Greatest band ever
With me it started the first time I heard Xanadu from A Farewell To Kings back in 77. I was knocked into a different music dimension. I had to buy that album. Next to it in the shop was "2112", I thought wow, nice album cover, I had no idea what a musical journey of discovery I was embarking on. Thank you Rush.
I could only imagine, I've never seen rush live, and tbh if I had to choose just one song to see live, this would be it.
They were 17 years older at this point, so cut them a little slack.
@@johnIZaUWL that's when I was front row in front of Geddy, the first third night.
@@johnIZaUWL True, have recordings of that time, Neil was just literally trying to play as fast as he could 👍
If you are a RUSH enthusiast, this is a GREAT song!
If you are less than a real music lover, you have NO idea why WE love them SO!
I still keep coming back to this one. One of the last great prog epic tunes Rush wrote, and one of the best! Sounds so good here as well, played to perfection. There will never be another!
If time travel becomes possible, first thing I'll do is go to every Rush show ever (five for the second time). Love you guys!
This must be the ultimate prog metal song. Not sure Rush have ever bettered this, but then who has? The stunning power of it, the contrasts, the seamless shifting between weird time signatures, and of course the portentous, rather alienated lyric, all add up to something greater than the sum of its parts.
These structures were ahead of the time. 1980.
Chuck Lang they were at thier best well after this song was written as well
This is the song that got me playing the guitar, 30 years ago.
These guys are going places...😎👍
Great summary. Don't think I've watched them play this one before. Cool to see.
Amazing, thank Rush for all you've done!
Not a day of my life goes bye that I don't listen to these guy's. They are just so tight with everything they play. RUSH is life.
All of my passwords are Rush lyrics. Shit, should I have said that online? Hahahaha
Chris, I also must have my "daily" RUSH !!! I saw 22 live shows over the years, starting with the Vapor Trails tour and would have preffered 122. I discovered Rush a bit late though... :-(
No doubt, have to have my daily dose. The greatest and most perfect band. There is Rush, and then somewhere down below everybody else.
Move in next door to me! ;-)
Its "wheels within wheels", just to let you know.
RSmith2112 Oh, okay. Thanks
RSmith2112 I always hear "river & wheels". All three interpretations make sense, & to me, that makes a good lyric.
chris schiefen Wheels within wheels
I always hear chips and cheese and a spiral souffle.
The music, the lyrics, the meaning, the whole damn package! This song will forever be BADASS!!
What a great night that was and what a great show.
drummer3125 well they have played natural science live. Permanent waves and moving pictures tour.
Had the same feeling when they played Losing It
drummer3125 I think Ged said this R40 also... hmm...
They also played it on Snakes & Arrows tour in 2007/2008. (Was) Always pumped to see it live. Awesome to see it and Jacob's Ladder on R40. It was definitely a high point of my life.
@@plannermann Oh right. That was the song they'd never played live. It was a great moment, but I think the song is weakened by sentiment.
Gotta love Geddy's mastery of finger-style bass playing!
Definitely, one of my all time favorite songs. Then again, all their songs are ALL magnificent.
I have seen Rush live in concert 11 times over the years, best 3 man band to walk the face of the earth!!!!!
Art as expression
Not as market campaigns
Will still capture our
Imaginations
Did Geddy skip this verse? I don't think it's there!
I don’t know when exactly they excised the verse (and added extra “wheels within wheels”) but this arrangement was standard for years before and evermore after.
Given the same, state of integrity, it will surely serve us well!
@@paulsikes3515 This tour (TFE) was the first time they changed the arrangement, it was the first tour Natural Science was played since 1981. I don’t mind it but part of me really misses the “art as expression” verse with the guitar solo.
You see the drummer? That’s the man right there. That’s the man. Neil Peart, Rest In Peace buddy. Relax man. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤜🏼🤜🏼 incredible drummer he was
nEIL pEART the greatest drummer, lyricist, and creative artist in our times.
Saw You in George, Washington at our precious Gorge Amphitheatre May 17th 1997... Perfection.
The complexity of arrangement of this tune is other worldly. The band leaves the earth at the end of the song.
Yes. A FAR stronger album closer than Witch Hunt / Vital Signs
Absolutely insane to play this song at this tempo!
Man Alex plays arpeggios like no one else.
Rest easy Neil. Lifelong hero to myself, my dad, countless others. Absolutely devastated, can't imagine keeping brain cancer a secret battle for years but that just shows how private and humble he was. His music and words are immortal, thank you for everything.
✊
I was so blessed to watch these guys live. Truly.
RUSH just had the best shows, lights projections, everything.
God bless you Neil. I miss you.
Neil Peart Plus
YEAH , indeed , peace mate
good photography , *xs 10 +
Eddie Van Halen said when asked "What does it feel like to be the top Guitarist?" He replied, " I do not know, ask Alex Liefeson!!!" True story as reported by Rolling Stone Mag
FUCK YES!
MY GUITAR HERO, and the reason i can play ANYTHING at all today....
Along with Elliot Easton and a pile of other killer players ... criminally underrated.
pretty good??
So privileged to have seen Rush live on the Time Machine Tour. Such gifted musicians and writers and so much humour. They looked so relaxed on stage blissfully unaware of the starstruck teenager grin on my 43 year old face.
Another killer song by the worlds best band ever!
This concert was held on my Birthday, I was 21. I never got to see it, but I was listening to the Boys just the same ❤️
Several years ago I saw Rush in concert, and they played Natural Science. I was absolutely stunned! Never had I ever witnessed such musicianship! They hit every note, every beat with such accuracy and authority, and at the end I had tears running down my face! I'm sure I wasn't the only one either! I had just witnessed the greatest band ever!
i had the exact same experience at the R30 tour with Xanadu.... in 25 yrs of shows id NEVEr heard them play Xanadu live
Mind fucking BLOWN. it was just so goddamn perfect I cried like a little girl lol.
I feel real pain when i think of how i missed the R40 tour.......;-(
Nice warm summer night down by the lake, cool breeze and some Rush. Great times was a great concert.
Bat Man No doubt. Probably go to lots of “local” shows. He is from Richmond Hill I was told.
Love this Song so amazing and was recorded at LE STUDIO Morin-Heights
Foxtrot 5 you've heard of 2112 almost assuredly
A buddy of mine bribed the DJ at my wedding to ensure Entre Nous was the very first song played. I could not have been happier.
My favorite Rush album is 2112FarewellToKingsHemispheresPermanentWavesMovingPicturesSignalsGraceUnderPressureCounterpartsSnakesAndArrowsClockworkAngels.
My 2nd favorite Rush album is RushFlyByNightCaressOfSteelPowerWindowsHoldYourFirePrestoRollTheBonesTestForEchoVaporTrails
Outrageously brilliant, but there again, were Neil, Geddy and Alex ever anything other RIP Professor 🥁
Geddy playing that Godly super busy bassline and also singing…as everyone knows, what incredible gifts he’s harnessed. Long live RUSH
Bassline.
@@HardPen-jj5nl lol. Thank you. Auto correct
Probably the most musically and lyrically accomplished song in the arsenal
Neil, Alex,Getty...
Gentlemen ...
Your music will stand for all time!
One of the best songs of all time. One of the best bands of all time. RIP Neil.
Alex Lifeson said a few times in interviews that Natural Science is the most difficult Rush song for himself to play in concert and yet insisted on playing also in set lists. The precision, concentration, and raw energy of this song is simply amazing to behold live.
I always thought of this as a quiet song. I don't know why. These guys absolutely rock like no other band ever
Mind blowing prog perfection. Permanent Waves was my first Rush album. Thanks dad!
Each time I listen to this song I feel like in a trance state of mind, I imagine I will live again in a far future time and space.
Hopefully in some form or fashion in 2112 with these guys
@@samdorsey2112 Lol, absolutely :)
Rush will NEVER get old!!!
Lifeson’s intro ,he has such an ear for dynamics.
This song is so awesome.
Feel privileged to have seen them 5 times
I saw this live on the Permanent Waves tour. It still gives me chills.
Music like this just can't be done anymore. It has faded from our world like major or an ancient art. 2112 was more more prophetic than we expected.
17 years after they recorded the song, played it back with the freshness of the original and then some. Smokin!
This band no matter what stage of life has always been my favorite.
26 years ago as I write this.
This song is PERFECT
Three great musicians. I am glad I got to see them a few times.
1000 % Agreed.....
Me too!!!!
RIP Neil Peart🙏
RUSH = LEGENDS OF PROGRESSIVE ROCK!!!!
This was my gateway song, and I never turned back
For me this is the best of Rush, great melody and superb musicianship, well done guys...
they were at their live peak on the T4E tour. they didn't mess a single moment of any song up the whole time.
Excellent sounds and thought provoking lyrics.
I've never known anyone who regretted a RUSH album purchase.
