Straight to the high point in this video: Lifeson's solo in Soliloquy at 11:07. Wow. By far the best version of this solo I've seen or heard. He's totally in the zone, letting loose, and improvising in ways that elevate this even beyond the studio take, putting his full body into it. It's one of those transcendent moments that truly puts the "live" in live music. It's not often cited as a favorite Lifeson solo (La Villa, Freewill, etc.), but it's one among many of Lifeson's deeper solo tracks that blows the mind upon a closer, active listen. Even on the original studio cut, the deep tone, prolonged bends, pinched harmonics, wailing and mournful ups and downs.... an incredibly expressive piece that perfectly conveys the longing despair in the lyrics. Lifeson's a true musical genius.

I heard Closer to the Heart on the radio in 1977. I was 14. I went out to buy the record but they didnt have A Farewell to Kings. They did have 2112. It looked cool but i didnt know what to expect. I bought it. Played it. Changed my fkg life. ♡
40 years ago when i was young, my great friend Mike Felion asked me one night, "do you like Rush"? , with a stupid face i said no, who is Rush? He looked at me with sadness, then anger and then a calmness and a smile...tomorrow i will bring you my favorite Rush Album for you to hear...sure enough he graced me with a copy "2112". He said to me keep it as long as you want, but listen to it and learn to appreciate it's beauty and power....it has been 40 years still the power and the beauty of these boys from toronto still rock my world today. God bless Alex, Geddy and may you be at peace Mr. Peart your words and music still shape my soul and life today......and somewhere in the universe...Mike, THANK YOU! For giving me the gift of RUSH!
@@Scottocaster6668 no, i gave it back after 2 weeks, went to record store back then where we young pups got our music and purchased a copy of 2112 and several others to get me fully immersed into the sound of Rush. Thanks for the question.
@@BLDRUNNER81 I figured I was just being an ass 😉. My first Rush album was All the world's a Stage, then 2112. Yep, at 10 years old. Times, they were good! 👍
Exposed to Rush for the first time while stationed in the US Air Force in '79. Seemed ebery fourth room in the barracks, especially the dudes, had 2112. Styx was my favorite band at the time. Wishing so much that I had focused more on Rush's excellence. Learning alot about them since Neil's passing. RIP Mr. Peart. Truly a Master drummer and lyricist.
This was TFE tour when they played this live for first time. Remember seeing this show in West Palm, Florida. The first time I saw Natural Science live too. What a show.
I remember the first time I heard 2112 back around the time it was released. . . . dumbfounded. . . . I had never even heard of Rush and immediately I was just stunned upon hearing 2112 That was a great era for music.
I had only heard but was a big fan of 'exit stage left' when I purchased a used copy of '2112' from the local record store.12 years old,it was my first taste of a 'concept album'.it was incredible.
This tour was easily my favorite Rush concert. The night I saw them the sound was phenomenal (kudos to their sound engineer) and Geddy was on it, just shrieking his lungs out. Front to back an outstanding concert but when 2112 started everyones arms shot up and the roar was deafening, one of those "holy shit, it's really going to happen. We're going to hear the entire 2112, they're really going to do it" moments.
+buzzcrushtrendkill Same for me - I was at this show and it was probably the best live show I ever went to. I said to my buddy after the show that we'll never see "Supper's Ready" live but at least we saw "2112".
+buzzcrushtrendkill I believe it was the first time they played all of 2112 ever - even on earlier tours I believe it was abbreviated but I could be wrong.
My God, was this not the most incredible power trio on EARTH? Was this not musical brilliance? Was this not the most powerful performance of 2112 that these dudes have ever performed. Awesome! Nobody will ever be able to replace Neil, he will be missed. He is legend, he is gone and I miss him already.
Yes, yes, and yes. I was shaking my head from the originality, tightness, the flow of the song & the musicianship of 3 guys producing all that sound. I'm so grateful I grew up in that era of music and talent 👍👍
Rush is in a league by themselves,!! ,3 Legendary musicians,!! , Doing, things way ahead of their time!! This was written in 76,,,and is still, ahead of,so many bands 45 years later,!! , Epic and Timeless!
Yes Mr Mc Graw. I was there for this epic moment. When they started playing 2112 no one could believe their ears. Molson Ampitheatre is a natural, outdoor amphitheater on Lake Ontario, just steps from „lakeside park”. The band was in their element and you could only imagine these beautiful sounds sent screaming into the heavens. And yes, I would sell everything I own too just to go back to that concert now truly knowing what I experienced.
I saw this show May 26, 1997. This video is from Toronto 1 month after i saw them but this is the same "show" I saw. Me and my sister flew from Maine to Washington state to see this concert at the Gorge Amphitheater with family that lived out there. In '97, there was no social media so we didn't know what to expect from this concert other than the stuff they'd obviously play and stuff from the new T4E album. This is the tour where they pulled "Natural Science" out of the vault and we nearly shit ourselves when Alex started with the acoustic riff. The crowd went nuts!! But when they kicked into the start of 2112, we all shit ourselves again but we had ZERO clue they were going to do the entire 2112 story before eyes. 25 of the greatest minutes of my life spent at that venue in the Columbia River Basin as they banged off the entire side one of 2112. We were hammered but man we were coherent enough to know we were witnessing what was probably the greatest Rush concert ever since before the R30 in Rio, this crowd at the Gorge was the biggest audience Rush had ever performed for in their history. While the R40 farewell concert in Boston was one of the best Rush shows I ever saw, it still was second to the T4E Tour 1997. I will never ever ever forget that as long I am breathing.
Man Geddy sounds amazing here! All 3 members firing on the same cylinder. That they could sound this good 20 years after the 2112 release, will never see this again!
I’m 28 but have been a diehard Rush fan nearly my entire life when my dad introduced me to them at a very young age. I went to 3 shows of their R30 tour and I’ve never seen in my life over 15,000 men all crying and praising God all at once at each show. Right then and there, the raw emotion I felt during each night with all those other fans absolutely confirmed that a Rush concert was truly heaven on Earth.
Thanks for the beautiful memories of 15 years ago👍 I was on the R30 tour in Prague (Czech Republic) on September 25, 2004 It was an amazing experience🥰

I still have my Vinyl 2112 LP from when I was a kid. My mom brought me to Tower Records to buy it when it first came out. I have 2 other copies that are in much better shape but I like listening to the older LP because of all the pops the needle picks up brings me back to the 70s and 80s.
I saw Rush play live early 1980’s, too stoned to remember and now regret that as my ageing memory struggles to recall a magical time. I now think I’m listening to Rush even more now than ever
I’m heartbroken that such a HORRIBLE TRAGEDY HAS OCCURRED. So UNFAIR THAT THE GREATEST PERCUSSIONIST, LYRICIST, AUTHOR, TRAVEL ADVENTURER, and GREAT DAD AND HUSBAND HAS PASSED AWAY IN SUCH A TRAGIC WAY! IM A PHYSICIAN BY TRADE AND I CANNOT WRAP MY HEAD AROUND THIS STILL 02/16/20....LIFE IS SO UNFAIR....😭😭😭😭😭 THANK YOU NEIL, RUSH AND FAMILY FOR GIVING THE WORLD SUCH BEAUTIFUL GUFTS THAT JUST NEVER STOP GIVING....
2112 is timeless. Why am I getting choked up in 2024, watching a performance I didn't see in 1997? It's because I saw them perform it in 1978, and wish I could go back and do it all again. Only I would see them a lot more than 8 times. Alex was on fire in this performance. He played an improvisation that was far different from the original in Discovery.
I have always found this piece from 2112 so beautiful and uplifting. That is, until the priests have their say. Alex really showed his creative power. Also, beautiful performance. I'm so envious for those who got to see them play this back in '76.
RUSH was my very first concert in 1979. Opened my eyes into a whole new world. It's 2021 and haven't stopped going to concerts. Have seen some of the greatest monsters of rock the world has ever known.
The unbelievable way Geddy shrieked out the vocal on the original recording could never be done again! Simply unique and one of a kind original voice! 😲👌✊
Undoubtedly the single most influential drummer of all time. There are many other great, great players but none taught so many so much. His profound influence cannot be overestimated and will be felt for decades to come. Godspeed, Neil Peart.
Just imagine if Alex had tried to be the best musician in the band. But, he sure as hell gives it his best!! I'm amazed the venues don't burst into flames when these guys get cooking!!
That is EXACTLY what went through my head during their Montreal show; couldn't believe I would actually witness ALL of 2112 in my life, and then it began!! Felt magical... connecting on a higher plane. Spiritual moving experience; one I'll never forget. This band transports like few others. Only D. Gilmour and Knopfler can do that for me. Missing them dearly already...
Then you bathed in magic as well brother! My 1stbin Montreal was GUP, 1984, then saw every show that came to MTL after that. I never missed one, saw them 25x , every one was bliss-full.
I saw that show in Buffalo. Incredible...2112 changed my life forever. Heard it in 7th grade. Every album was special and made the soundtrack for my life. 2112 was the MASTERPIECE. Saw every tour since Moving Pictures. Unfortunately, I heard of Neil's death at my mom's wake. I not only lost a friend but the means to cope with life events. It will never be the same but it was a hell of a ride and thank God I was there!!
So sad, that one of the greatest and most creative guitarist will never perform again with the other two live on stage. But videos like this one will help the memories of the "disembodied spirit" named Neill alive for all of us.
I'm 49 years old and Rush has been my favorite band since my dad got Fly By Night in 1976, I was 6 years old. Hard to express what Rush is to me. I know I'm far from alone in that. When I got older and started playing guitar Alex was my model and to this day, after all the Van Halen and Steve Vai and metal, Alex is still my standard for the greatest and Rush is still my favorite band ever bar none. RIP Neil.
Jesus ... RIP Neil Peart. What a loss. 2112 and All The World's A Stage were a huge part of my personal and musical growth as a kid in the late seventies. Reading Ghost Rider about Neil's healing after losing his daughter and wife by riding his BMW across continents was also pivotal in my later life. What an incredibly multi faceted human being he was.
Mark Keith that was good but...... Vintage Rush was Pre 1980! Way way before all the commercial success way before all the fan boys hoped on the Rush Train. I saw Permenant waves tour - That was 2112!!!! Duel double necks and all! Phenomenal!
If your really into this band like many people say they Are, than you listened to Grace Under Pressure Power Windows Hold your Fire Presto As much as.. 2112 Moving Pictures Permanent Waves Exit Stage Left. Thank you Neil Forever💝
I saw them 2 times Moving Pictures and Signals tours and I will say by far and large the most professional and intricate band I have ever seen RIP Neil Peart

Happy that I happened to be on this little planet at the same time these 3 guys.
Every single night, headphones on, in my room, on my bed, this was my soundtrack from 14-18. Nothing like Rush, never will be again.
I have listened to 2112 at least a 1000 times and I never get tired of it.

THANK YOU NEIL, RUSH AND FAMILY FOR GIVING THE WORLD SUCH BEAUTIFUL GUFTS THAT JUST NEVER STOP GIVING....
AMAZING WHAT TREE MEN CAN DO THANK YOU,
I love this band so much...still can't believe Neil is gone..
This tour was my first time hearing the complete piece and I will never forget it.
Undoubtedly the single most influential drummer of all time. There are many other great, great players but none taught so many so much. His profound influence cannot be overestimated and will be felt for decades to come. Godspeed, Neil Peart.
John Bonham influenced very many including Peart
Just imagine if Alex had tried to be the best musician in the band. But, he sure as hell gives it his best!! I'm amazed the venues don't burst into flames when these guys get cooking!!
That is EXACTLY what went through my head during their Montreal show; couldn't believe I would actually witness ALL of 2112 in my life, and then it began!! Felt magical... connecting on a higher plane. Spiritual moving experience; one I'll never forget.
This band transports like few others. Only D. Gilmour and Knopfler can do that for me. Missing them dearly already...
Montréal ? I was there !!
RIP Neil.
I am still in an loss for words how deeply Neal's passing has effected me as well as millions of others.
R.I.P Pratt!!!
The best band in the galaxy !!! :) RUSH RULES
Suddenly you were gone from all of us you’ left your mark upon Neil we will always watch you guys and listen must dig that record out
Who became a die hard Rush fan because of this album?
Forever!!!!
Get to finally see discovery,, and the oracle live after all these years,,, they always played a condensed version of the 2112 album side live!!
I think this was their best concert as it should be playing for the home crowd.
No matter how many times I have listened to this particular album since its release, it never gets old.
So classic Alex! I could watch him play the Les Paul all day long!
OMG my favorite live video of Rush I’ve ever seen!!!
I first saw rush in 1976 and I still love them!
Saw this live from tenth row upfront, best seats I ever had for Rush, I can't put it into words!
a testament to the genius of Lerxt
Can't get enough of the MASTERS........Rush is #1 in my book
…and now I’m late for work 🤪🤟🏻
ATWAS was my first Rush album growing up. I was 11. Boy, we had a awesome childhood didn't we? I find myself going back to that album all the time! 😊👍
Alex is an underrated genius/legend/God.
Wow! That was by far the best version of 2112 I've ever seen on you tube.
Mark Keith that was good but...... Vintage Rush was Pre 1980! Way way before all the commercial success way before all the fan boys hoped on the Rush Train. I saw Permenant waves tour - That was 2112!!!! Duel double necks and all! Phenomenal!
Rush's best work was back in the 70's. Totally agree. Rush's long song era.
AGREED!
Man….Alex just friggin Crushes this! So badass. Love that particular Les Paul!
I was fortunate to see them four times. 1984, 1994, 2004, and 2011. That I could have seen them just a few more times.
If your really into this band like many people say they Are, than you listened to
Grace Under Pressure
Power Windows
Hold your Fire
Presto
As much as..
2112
Moving Pictures
Permanent Waves
Exit Stage Left.
Thank you Neil
Forever💝
EVERY Rush album is solid however, they peaked at PERMANENT WAVES...
I saw them 2 times Moving Pictures and Signals tours and I will say by far and large the most professional and intricate band I have ever seen RIP Neil Peart
Still in shock over Neil's death!! Can't get enough Rush ever since!! Love this!
Alex tone is a amazing.
Les Paul.
What an amazingly lovely solo intro!
Thanks Neil.
So good,it shows in the passion of the performance.
There's something to be said for a band where each musician is ranked in the top 10 of all time!
So glad that Oracle: The Dream is played here. They always seemed to skip that chapter live more often than not.
3 nerds making kick ass music. Geddys voice was awesome. We miss you Neil :(
