You might enjoy a larger loop next time, extending down Coast Ridge past Salmon Creek onto the Dutra trail which takes you along the way to Three Peaks Camp. Abundant water source there even in drought years. Then take that Dutra trail south to Dutra Flat camp. Then you can end that loop on the Salmon Creek trail or choose other alternate paths back. One choice being going to Turkey Springs camp, then down to Baldwin Ranch Road, then up to the top of the ridge between Mt. Mars and Bald Top, then take that ridge to Mt. Mars, then over the front side down to the Salmon Creek trail about .75 miles from the trailhead at highway 1. Lots of fun up there.

Excited to see the next video! I was relieved when you finally found your campsite. Sometimes it's so hard at night to get your bearings. The evening colors in the sky and all those wildflowers make it hard not to video right??? A nice fire is a perfect way to end the evening. Have you ever seen any mountain lions on your hikes? I have to start thinking like a west coast hiker with my upcoming trip out there? ~RVA~

I was relieved, too! I try to hike loud at night to alert the wildlife. Thankfully no mountain lions so far, but many bobcats and coyotes, and a few black bears. Hopefully nothing too adventurous when you’re out here!

And I couldn’t NOT take video of some of that! It was so beautiful. Wait til you see the next one. My campsite the next night had a view that made me emotional!

@@WanderingSwitchback Bobcats tend to be more shy right? I have never seen a coyote on trail. I have heard a bunch at night and found alot of tracks.

@@RVAHikerGirl Usually I just catch the hind end of bobcats as they dive into the bushes, although I've had a handful hanging out (and one that was growling at me- I think guarding a kill, after talking about it with the ranger). We have a lot of coyotes here- I saw 6 of them around sunrise in a meadow at a place I like to go before work. When we were in Yosemite for New Years last year, we saw a black bear, a bobcat and a coyote all in one day! The first two within half a mile of each other on a hike. It was really neat!

Great hike! I like to arrive before dark when I set up my camp, but when the days are short, it sometimes it's a challenge! 😁 All the best! Kaat

A late start like I got is best to avoid when possible! I was thankful the campsites were well-marked. Sometimes it can really be tough to figure out where to go at night. Thanks Kaat!

Thanks for making this! I am curious how long it took to hike from the trailhead at the range station, to buckeye camp. I am planning to do this same loop in a couple weeks, and since I am new backpacker I want to try to plan to get to camp well before it gets dark. Any tips you might have would be appreciated.

I'm glad this was helpful! I don't know if you saw the other two videos of this loop, but it's truly incredible. I wouldn't count on the water being as abundant unless there's more rain coming between now and then- of course, always check conditions before you go. The trek to Buckeye took me about 3 hours, but I am not fast, and I'm filming along the way, so that always slows things down, too. It's about 4 miles. Great campsite, and the spring is pretty cool (you'll see it in the Day 2 video of the trip). Take trekking poles- you will need them! I hope you're doing lots of hiking. This is one of the most challenging trails I've done, but it was worth it. Just enjoy it and go slow with it. Also, double check fire restrictions- they probably aren't allowing fires up there until after the new year. Have an amazing time!

I see you found some good parking right at the trail head!! Any other parking near by if the lot is all full? Looking to backpack so leaving my car overnight.

Luckily, there is more parking at the exit, less than 1/4 of a mile away, and I believe there is other parking as well on the side of the road.
