BE CAREFUL. There is little to no cell coverage for the majority of the coast even on the highway let alone the trails. if you get lost or stranded. have a sat phone and let someone know where you went. Unfortunately, we have a lot of people here who fight against cell towers. Also, be a safe driver. DO NOT tailgate. It's a dangerous road, don't pressure drivers ahead of you even if the signs request slower vehicles pull over to let people pass, it's not a good excuse to endanger them and yourself. I've lived in the monterey area almost my entire life and ill never get tired of big sur.

    Some additional things to see,
Old Country road going South to North comes out at Bixby Bridge.
It’s a 12 mile dirt road that’s a bit rough in places. It’s breathtakingly beautiful in spots.
The Big Sur Campgrounds & Cabins , and the camping area Riverside next door are simply sublime. Both have an abundance of Massive trees, the river, foliage everywhere, & cute cabins and campsites. It’s a true haven of tranquility among the massive trees.
Rocky Creek is an excellent restaurant as well with fabulous views.
Point Lobos on North end of Big Sur has Otters and whales that travel through. It also has tide pools and beautiful scenery. I’ve seen deer there right next to the ocean.

I lived and worked at Nepenthe from 1984 to 1987. I was recovering from a motorcycle accident in Palm Springs and some old friends helped me get well Physically and Mentally. Anyone that goes into this area should and could spend at the very least two weeks here. Get a good tent, stock up on food and beverages and cots and sleeping bags and “car camp” up and down the coast. If your into motorcycles I would get a small group together and take turns exploring in and around a main base camps. Two days here three days there ? Start in the south and make plans using this video as a guide. Have a wonderful time.

Gorge running was popular back in 1985, start at the waterfall and run the canyon until you get to where the trail crosses the creek.
Also their was a restaurant along the road and creek that had great bands back then play there. They also had cement chairs in the river.
Back then just about everywhere below the road was clothing optional to include the Gorge.
Then there was the hot springs the one you pay for and the ones hidden, I wont say more.
Lastly the hidden shower along the side of the road, just below. There was a spring here when the road was built so they just ran the spring out a culvert under the road.
Someone made a trail down just below the culvert and decorated it with a bench, flowers, and a small precipice to stand and shower naked looking out at the Pacific back in 1985.

Yes! The River Inn w/ Country Joe & The Catfish & the like (albeit they were quiet a bit earlier than 1985), chairs in the river, (complete with cocktail servers if u were so inclined)-reading a good book while sitting in the River…the mysterious rock stacks ! Bodacious breakfast at The River Inn! Oh I had forgotten about the hot tubs overloooking the coast! No idea if they still exist even in a private capacity…

Big Sur needs your help. The recent increase in the number of visitors is challenging the safety and wellbeing of residents, visitors and the fragile natural environment. All of us can make a positive difference to protect and nurture Big Sur. Help us by taking and activating the Big Sur Pledge.
    The Pledge
#1 Share our coastal roads in a safe manner.
#2 Be mindful of the impact of my actions.
#3 Protect and respect Big Sur’s natural resources, public and private property, residents, employees, and visitors.
#4 Leave no trace and not damage or take what is not mine.
    #5 Camp only where allowed.
#6 Be vigilant and fire safe.
#7 Be a steward of this precious resource for the enjoyment of all.
#8 Honor the spirit of Big Sur as it honors me.

Yes. I saw the long line of cars parked by the side of the road and the sign that some residents hung on the bridge on the news. It seems to me all due to that show on hbo. I want to go up to Monterey and travel tru Big Sur but I would hate all that traffic. But it does not look like I will be able to make the trip. I did travel thru there many, many years ago. DanTheRamFan Good for you. Most Big Sur residents aren’t rich. They are low income, working poor, especially after fires cut them off from everything. Everyone should be able to visit Big Sur, that’s the point of this pledge, preserving the environment for everyone, visitors and residents.

    • @Belle8nTN
      @Belle8nTN 3 года назад +2

@@mathildaandmike - Muir Woods, The Presidio, and the Sausalito house boats would be a few worth considering imho. Taking the drive south on Hwy 1 to Half moon Bay ( Ano Nuevo state park & many great stops on the way to Santa Cruz -or north of San Fran on Hwy 1- Best oysters ever in Oyster Bay- don’t know if that’s still the case tho’. But a drive on Hwy 1 in either direction was always enjoyable to me- “the Old coast Hwy” part too -is narrow & curvy drive- but used to be some great scenery and quaint pub stops & such - but check recent maps- it’s been some years since I traveled those areas & even then it seemed to be a protected secret drive & The old coast highway south of San Fran was something I was not introduced to early on- a Santa Cruz native eventually took me for a drive along the forested old road it’s the sort of place where u almost expect to see Argo Guthrie walk out ( if he was still alive of course ;)) different sort of views from the cliffs & ocean views of the current Hwy 1 drive.
Arriving in Santa Cruz- the list is long of places to see & things to do Santa Cruz & Capitola & south to Moss Landing (good food & antique shops!) - home for MBARI- then further south to Monterey- u almost can’t go wrong- just don’t rush the journey, and enjoy! (You can get from San Fran to Monterey in about 2 hours if u want- but I could just as easily make a 3 -4 day trek out of the distance between the 2, & enjoy some of the sights & stops in between.) so that’s some ideas in a nutshell. I would say talk to locals of some age & research the hidden gems of the area.

    I LOVE BIG SUR!!!
When I lived in Silicon Valley, I used to cruise it all the time. I went with Stanford Outing Club to Sykes Hot Springs, which is a 12 mile hike into the mountains. I also would go to Eselen Hot Springs from 1am - 5am; in the 80s, it only cost $5. You sat in a rock tub overlooking the ocean while looking at shooting stars. I have pictures of it with snow in the mountains, and I understand you can see the sun set below Bixby Bridge if you stand in the right spot.
I have eaten at Nepenthe's. I read an article that a woman danced with a man in a mysterious black cape on the deck by firelight. I'm still hoping to do that someday - or maybe I could be a mysterious woman in a black cape dancing with a young hottie...
    P.S. I understand Nepenthe's was Rita Hayworth's honeymoon suite!

For those of you interested, the films THE SANDPIPER (1965) with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton and ZANDY’S BRIDE (1974) with Liv Ullmann and Gene Hackman shot virtually all exterior shots in the Big Sur area. A bit further down the coast at Los Osos, Walt Disney Productions shot PETE’S DRAGON with Helen Reddy and Mickey Rooney. Unfortunately that magnificent lighthouse set was torn down when the film was completed. It was a practical set and not a front, so it could have been left standing. But it was removed for environmental reasons when the film completed in 1976.

Bixby Bridge. You left out the ( poet/ City Lights) Lawrence Ferlinghetti cabin "under the bridge" ( it is set back, I've been there) Kerouac lived in for a while and wrote the memoir, Big Sur. Literary history is why most outside of CA probably know of this location.

We missed all those points but have a excuse to go back there.
    Great Video BTW.

If it wasn’t taken out by the last fire, there’s no more stunning a place to camp than Kirk Creek Campground. With steep ridges jutting up a couple of thousand feet looking south and a spectacular arcing view of the coastline looking north, it’s hard to conceive of a more beautiful and inspiring place. And at night you can see the lights from the tiny hotel along the cliffs at Lucia. Back in the ‘80s Esalen would open up their hot tubs to anyone between 1 and 5 AM. The mineral water makes you more buoyant. I remember resting my neck on the stone edge, anchored by it as I floated, with my body rising and sinking with every breath as I viewed the stars above and dipped in and out of conversation with my friends.

Camped at Pfeiffer state park in 2003. Went to that exact spot at mcway falls and went to that cove area on Pfeiffer Beach. Only saw pics back then as there were no youtube vids so i didnt know these were hot spots but it is very nice in Big Sur.. Gas was expensive though, I think like $4+ back in 2003...

Stayed in Carmel last year and used your videos for reference. Big Sur was amazing. Granite Canyon Bridge is a great stop. Smaller than Bixby and less crowded but you can still get a perfect highway 1 pic there.

    @California through my lens CORRECTION
At McWay Falls also known to US LocaLs as NOMcWay falls There is a way down to those falls it’s at the opposite end of that trail and there’s a little fence that you have to circumvent no big deal and you walk down this path by your little ranger station with some tents you get some really amazing pictures from the other side of that mountain on the left that you cannot see at all from your trip down that little path and eventually you can see how you could walk all the way down to the Falls.

I, too, prefer driving PCH north-to-south thru Big Sur because it’s closer to the edge of the road. However, either direction is great as long as the sun is behind you; driving those winding roads with sun glare in your face, especially when your windshield is caked with salt spray, is not only fatiguing, but dangerous. To enjoy one of the best drives of your life, clean your windows; keep the sun at your back, and don’t drive it at night. Of course, if it’s not sunny, it doesn’t matter. Bon voyage!

Just great. Yes Sir! Hey next time you're up north maybe try the lost coast trail from Shelter Cove to the mouth of the Mattole River in Humboldt County! Its a great 2 day hike all along the ocean, And while you're here check out the victorian town of Ferndale Ca where they filmed the Majestic, with Jim Carrey and also the movies Outbreak and Salems Lot! Theres a great coastal drive from Centerville Beach over 'the Wildcat" to along an old stage coach route to Petrolia CA where they first discovered oil in California and where Nikola Tesla had a workshop for experiments. All within like 40 miles of each other.
