I just redid my file cabinet. She has uncomplainingly held all our important papers for 40 yrs. She now has a black finish with gold trim and some gold legs. She is so classy and happy!!!!
I especially appreciate that you finish the interior of all of your projects as well as you do the exteriors. It definitely sets your work apart from many others. I also love your use of the word “Thingy.”
I had fallen in love with a cabinet only to discover that it tested positive for Lead. I looked for ways to deal with it but everyone told me to send it to the dump. I found a company in the US that is the only company to make a paint stripper specifically for lead paint! You cannot buy this in any box store, at least here in Canada you cannot. The product worked amazingly well. I love your work and your standards are beyond reproach!
@@garypautard1069 Lead paint ... it shouldn't be tossed in with general refuse. Just like anything removed from a house that has lead paint on it (trim boards, etc), this thing should have been disposed in the same way.
Jay, as soon as this piece tested positive for lead, I just wanted you to get rid of it. After seeing the final results, I am so happy that you didn't. It was surely an unhappy piece of furniture, but now it would dance if it could. It's a beauty, and extremely functional. Great job!!
This project is amazing! All of your restorations are inspirational, but this one really spoke to me. I think I will never look at discarded furniture the same way. Thank you for sharing your candid thoughts and your imagination. Best wishes to you in all your endeavors.
This was much more than a "frog to prince" transformation. When I saw the "before", i thought you must have inhaled too many volital chemical fumes to even think the cabinet was salvageable 🙂. The after was absolutely stunning. You did it again!
Like other commenters I thought, “why is he bothering?” Great example of how to apply an imaginative and artistic solution to what looked like worthless junk. Bravo! Also thought about the day, years in the future, when another woodworker decides to “fix up this old thing” and is totally shocked and confused by what is under the veneered ply.
When you talked about shaking your clothes out and washing them it reminded me of the early days of covid. Undressing in the garage and putting my nursing scrubs immediately into a disolvable bag and right into the washer. I was happy to see the shelf inspector.
I have a nurse friend that did the same thing whenever she came in contact with a patient that had the flu (pre-covid). She didn’t want her kids getting sick.
@@kateabis That was only the beginning of my clean up. My work shoes went in a tray that had a layer of bleach and of course I ran right to the shower. I even cleaned everything I touched in the car before getting out. I'm glad that's over.
What were you trying to prove by trying to resuscitate this old, rotten piece of furniture? Why did you even do it? Were you competing with someone on who could revive the oldest piece of trash? What's the point? Sure, it looks ok at the end but inside, it's still garbage! Why waste your valuable time?
I also feel for furniture- I want pieces to be ‘Happy’ which is what you made this piece become! I know there were still photos at the reveal, but I swear it breathed a huge sigh of relief! You wanted this cabinet to be glamorous- you far exceeded your goal! Thank you for giving this piece a chance to live a ‘Happy’ life! 💖🌟🤘
I watch resellers of antiques and collectibles. They have the same emotional reaction to some pieces. They apologize to them when they can’t save them, rescue them even if they’re a little damaged and give them loving pats when they have to walk away. So I get it when you “feel” the need to save this piece. And what a gorgeous makeover. I also love the music you used in this video. Very moody and emotional. Thanks Jay.
I find your ‘personizing’ a piece of furniture utterly endearing! It honors the gift of the trees, the original maker and all of the years of service given. That cabinet certainly deserves a glamorous second life! May all of us be so fortunate!
When I saw your intended project, I simply invoked the mantra, Trust The Process. The end result was stunning. Highly impressed, but not the least surprised. Thanks for the show.
I love how you see furniture as having a soul. I am the same way. It is beautiful, as usual. You really went all out on this one. Where do you find your knobs? You have used some unique ones!
It came out Really Nice. But for Me, it Begs the Question; Would be Easier and Cheaper to Make it from Scratch? Is it just Too Far Gone? It Might be Interesting to do a Side by Side Comparison against Cost and Hours Spent. For You, this a Perfect Project. Lots of Problems that Need Lots of Solutions. And I Enjoy Watching You do it, Especially when it Makes You Squirm a Little bit! That's part of the Fun!
Agree. Much easier to make one from scratch. However as it started off as a restoration I reckon Jay decided to use what was salvageable to come up with a nice piece of furniture. I think that most of us have done something similar at some time.
It's really, really handsome, Jay. If I hadn't watched the whole video I wouldn't believe it was most of the original piece. I also learned from this project how important veneer is.
It's a nice, modern piece with clean lines. Nothing special...until you see how it started out! I love the intention that motivated you to take on this project. You will smile every time you look at it. A very special piece indeed.
Oh Jay. This has got to be one of my favorites you’ve done. I love flipping it in its side! And the dowl jig???? Fantastic! This one gets a huge thumbs up!!!! Love it.
You are a craftsperson not just a woodworker. The care you took to restore this piece while making it beautiful and functional. I especially appreciated your emphasis on safety. Oh my goodness!! You have absolutely outdone yourself on this project!! That TV cabinet is a far cry from the dirty little shop cupboard you started with. I'm glad you were able to transform this ugly duckling into quite the beautiful swan!! ❤❤❤
I’m bummed I missed the premier but I’m glad I got to watch the replay. This turned out so beautifully. I really like how you felt “sorry” for the old thing and wanted to beautify it. You succeeded. It is so interesting to me how people can be so smart to engineer tools for specific purposes. And then it is so cool seeing creative and smart people like you using them. I hope your thumb is ok. Thanks for sharing! Peace and love..Suz What ☮️💛
When removing lead-based paint, you should use stripper so there are no fine particles to deal with. The stripper goop can be sealed up in an old can or jar and disposed of at an appropriate facility. You should never sand it off.
His sander filters like a vacuum and he explained that the filter bags were carefully changed afterwards. He can’t include every detail in these videos. I’m sure he was extra careful.
Unless you send me lead paint specific stripper that won’t produce harmful fumes….. assume that I did the best I could in that situation instead of patronising me 😉
What a awesome piece. To think what it once looked like n now a beautiful piece of furniture that’s functional. I would’ve never thought to put it on its side. I could see you put your whole heart into this functional piece. You did a lot of work on it n it shows. I was in Awe when you used that cool tool to make a dowel. I’ve never seen any like that. I’m beginning to think when there’s a new tool out there Jay has got it 😅. You’re becoming a true craftsman n I love it. ♥️♥️♥️👍👍👍👏👏🌟
Lining the insides with new panels was a great idea, I’m actually doing the same thing with my current project 😆
Thanks Andy 🙂 looking forward to seeing what you do 👍
Are you adding brass and/or dowls too. I hope that’s spelled right. Lol. Correct me if it’s not!
Dowels. Walmart showed me!
So pleased to see the two of you know each other

I only saw firewood until you recreated this into something beautiful.
Except that you shouldn't burn wood that has lead paint on it. The smoke and fire vapors are toxic from the lead.
I only saw woodworm, lead paint and a unstable frame. My thoughts- take it to your re-cycling centre and throw it into a skip.
