@@piotrnapora5810 No where near that frequently. You can follow manufactures recommendations because they make money on the new car, not the labor of replacing fluids. Spare parts for OEMs has almost no profit, so your car manufacturer has no incentive to lie about maintenance intervals
@@garythecyclingnerd6219 car manufacturers or part manufacturers. Because car manufacturers will extend the service interval of oils "lifetime" fluids to give the customer the perception that the car is more reliable and need less maintenance. The manufacturers for the parts will almost always have a shorter interval than the car manufacturer states. To state that they have no incentive to lie about maintenance intervals is just false and can easily be disproven by ZF transmissions. Who clearly states every 40-50k to replace the transmission fluid. But FCA, BMW, VW state that it is a "lifetime" oil that NEVER needs to be changed. Not to mention the amount of rebranded oils out there. BMW will sell you differential fluid and "OEM" parts, which are almost 3 times the price of the exact same fluid or part from the manufacturer. So how are they not trying to make a profit?
Yeah, $1,800 is not chump change for sure and from what I've seen replacing them is not easy at all. There are several parts, some are pressed, and everything needs to be reassembled very precisely or you're guaranteed to have problems.
Sucks that the “Parts Industry” is charging $1800 for the rear differential. Almost leaves you no room for mark up. You have to charge your mark up as well as labor. That’s business.

Yep. Just happened to me. Intermittent metallic grinding sound when the wheel rotates as I drive. Bad news.

My DTS had a rear clunking noise. But that's because I had those stupid air shocks on it. I switched to coil over conversation kit; and so good, so far.
My 02 is300 has been in the shop for 3 weeks waiting for parts to repair my rear diff, they mentioned 'welded', seals were bad and leaking and that there's only 2 of these parts brand new available in the whole country right now. Luckily they have salvage plug, but they sent a part for GS300, how annoying! (My AC compressor/condensor was also being replaced) I've had the car for about 2 years and this grind apparently coming from the rear diff, has been there ever since. It was hard to hear over the other rumble sound coming from a bearing that has since been replaced, but man is it aggravating to know that my car is up on a rack right now waiting for a simple piece. She better run like new after this huh?!
I wanna know if they actually replaced it the first time around...I’ve heard from other folks at bmw dealer they say they’ll replace parts but they never did and just bandaid em till they break down out of warranty.
momo not sure if they did or not. Bolts had defiantly been messed with and it had been over a year sense i had checked it last. But with that been said I know several dealer techs and service advisors and never heard of them doing anything like that. I think it depends on the tech and how reputable the dealer is. Because they still get paid ... it takes them longer but they still get paid from the parent company.
Man, think my bearings are going at 88,000 miles. Thought they typically lasted longer than that? Oh well, I’ve heard they aren’t too difficult to replace on the rear of a 2012 Ford Focus. Also, had my transmission replaced like a year ago and it’s going again. Ford’s refusing to fix the transmission because the skip isn’t “bad enough.” Don’t think I’ll be buying another Ford.
I had an issue once. Years ago my 82 Camaro needed an annual inspection. The inspector flunked it for a bad rear bearing seal, which damaged the brake shoe. So after a $400.00 bearing, seal and brake job, I had an inspection sticker. A week later the rear developed a noise beginning at 30 mph and proceeding through 60 mph. Using my GM shop manual I determined the noise was in the differential. I took the car back but the service manager said he couldn't hear the noise. I didn't get into an argument with him but I did tell him I was going to take it to a Chevrolet dealer so they could determine the problem. As I was leaving a mechanic ran out telling me he didn't damage the differential. Again I didn't argue with him. I carried the car to the service department of the nearby Chevrolet dealership and got a mechanic to test drive the car. A mile down the road the mechanic confirmed my suspicion telling me the pinion bearing was bad. But as I was gloating, he told me that given the mileage on the car (~300,000+). I couldn't prove the recent service caused the problem. "Besides he hated working on those cars". Oh well. I ended up with a rebuilt unit. Needless to say I didn't go back to that service center. They closed down 2 years later. :)
Great video ! Thanks man, I heard that same exact noise in my BMW 750i but I believe my seal the went bad cause there is a gal between where the main axle goes into the differential and it gave off a burn smell. I purchased a new Barring , Seal, and more differential oil. When they lifted the car onto the truck I had differential fluid leaking onto the muffler badly. Hope when the parts get here from eBay I can get it done. Is it absolutely necessary to take down the muffler and heat shroud? I’m not trying to do that if not needed
2015 XTS-4 rear diff chronic (shuddering) problems. May have ruined the drive shaft this time. Both being replaced now.... GM had a technical svc. bulletin on rear differentials for 14/15 Caddy's & Buicks.
Dealerships always trying to screw ppl over...I wouldn't be surprised if they installed a used diff, or just tried to rebuild the original, instead of installing a new one to save themselves money...I had a vehicle w/a recalled part, back in 2019, and now there's a recall for the SAME part in 2022...which means, the replacement part they used for the initial recall was also defective...think I would go back to them again, I would be outta my mind #stealerships #goodvideo #goodinfo
I had that same bs problem on my Altima I was told to get a new Cvt transmission so I was also told change the cvt fluid every 30k after the first time which is 60k
yeah the diff but the gears id say are fine especially with it being a diff carrying assembly its the bearings for left and right axle and would check the back lash cause the pinion bearing prolly bad too the usually sound like this when the bearings get worn. The dealer prolly over filled it put thicker oil to quite it down so it would last outside warranty to screw here over

i hear a whirling noise/ humming noise when i accelerate at 100kmph but not at 90 or 110kmph is it still because of the differential?
could be
You can also put your hand on the hubs and diff... and check for excessive heat... after test drive... dead giveaway
Thanks for the tip, I had a Audi a7quattro in the shop for a noise on the right rear and told the customer to go to the dealership.
I have a 2014 ATS 3.6 wtih 79k miles and now I have a weird sound, changed one wheel barring, and flushed and changed Transmission and Diff fluids and still there.
I originally hear what sounded like an electrical hum, then became louder when let off the gas pedal and most loud around 12-1700 rpm. So Stumped
Sounds to me like a transmission sound. Could be.
And Scotty illustrated a kit with 5 wireless microphones that attach magnetically where you choose around your vehicle to help pinpoint the sources of unusual noises .
Wow that sounds like a differential with zero oil.
It does!
If I refill it will it goes away? I’m working on my friend car I open the axle fluid drain hole nothing coming out any idea please help
@@jacobvuna6462 It a much cheaper option to try first and see what happens!
GM quality is garbage that’s why I switched to my Toyota!!! My 4 runner has 254,000 and still has the original engine, trans and differential. I will be a Toyota owner for life!!!!

👍🏽 dealer said I have cupping but I think it’s something else since the tires look fine. Thank you
2014 with a bad differential already, that's just poor quality.
Exactly what my truck sounds like. Thanks now to figure out if it’s a rebuild or a new axle and diff 2012 Nissan Titan 146,000 miles
Thanks now im pretty sure its just a dust cover grinding or a slightly bad bearing going badder. Doing a temp check on the wheels tomorrow after a new disc and brake job. Don't feel like overheating the whole wheel assembly because of a 300$ job. New tires too. lol
Thank you that's exactly the noise my 1973 Monte Carlo was making 👍
Change the diff fluid every 15,000 miles regardless of what the manufacturer recommends.
Interesting theory, that’s my next FLUID CHANGE!!👍🏽👍🏽
Oh, f$ck, you have to change the diff fluid?
@@piotrnapora5810 No where near that frequently. You can follow manufactures recommendations because they make money on the new car, not the labor of replacing fluids. Spare parts for OEMs has almost no profit, so your car manufacturer has no incentive to lie about maintenance intervals
@@garythecyclingnerd6219 The car in question is a Land Rover, so shortening the maintenance interval would be the smart thing to do
@@garythecyclingnerd6219 car manufacturers or part manufacturers.
Soon as you put the camera under the car I knew it was a bad differential. I mess around with RC cars a lot and I am too familiar with that sound lol
That's the thing about Cadillacs: once they break, they stay broken.
🤔🤔
Yeah, $1,800 is not chump change for sure and from what I've seen replacing them is not easy at all. There are several parts, some are pressed, and everything needs to be reassembled very precisely or you're guaranteed to have problems.
My car makes a scraping noise when going over bumps driving a little fast (60mph) on the front right wheel. What could that be?
Had the rear diff bork the same way (at least it sounded similar) in Dad's 2014 Freelander 2. At 4 years. And less than 50k miles
You the man, pretty sure got a bad wheel bearing on my 2012 escape
Gracias Hermano.Saludos de Sydney Australia.
saludos
My Falcon diff is bad ( maybe)
Sucks that the “Parts Industry” is charging $1800 for the rear differential. Almost leaves you no room for mark up. You have to charge your mark up as well as labor. That’s business.
I didn't have that particular problem with my vehicle but it gave me a great starting point at troubleshooting the problem
Really?? That is a very important comment. The one that says.. i dont have that problem.. Wow.. Genious... WoooooW..
@@CFITOMAHAWK yes since I did know where to start and followed his tips that allowed me to rule out that area.soYES carry on mahawk
Oh by the way thank you!!😂😂
Fml finally found a vid of the same sound. Like rolling barb wire behind me on the road. Differential bs. Thought ball bearing .... fawwkkkkk thank you for the vid
I hear a humming noise only when I let off accelerater. Could that be differential, I cant tell if its left or right. It gets louder the faster I go.
Same here
most likely wheel bearing
@@nathaniels2354 haha thats funny you say that, its at the shop right now. They said my front wheel bearings had some play so I'm gonna pick it up in like a hour
Cost like 690
Got the wheel bearings changed and have the same noise
This sound comes to my car when I drive faster than 70speed could this be what is wrong with my car my car had also recently been in repair for the back wheel and the repair was weirdly done they glued my car a lot in the back or could it be that my back wheel is lose
Great GM product. I had SRX .... and the same quality. Constant problems, engine rebuild at 14K, suspension problems, water leaks and list went on.
Modern (since the 90s lol) GM quality.
Absolute shit cars, I don't know how they are still in business, let alone selling half as many vehicles as they do.
2013 srx had a leak in sunroof shorted out all the rear electronics, and struts went out at 80k
This clears a lot for for self diagnosing
Yep. Just happened to me. Intermittent metallic grinding sound when the wheel rotates as I drive. Mechanic told me that if I took it for a long drive, extreme heat can build up from the friction and weaken the metal itself and causing complete failure and destruction of the axle and or differential while driving. Bad news.
@Landon Brodie that won't bother you if you invest with Grace Gordon. She's a queen with crypto and I turned 5 bucks into ten grand!

Not coming from the driveshaft. The pattern of sound = each rotation of the wheel
Keep on doin what you're doing man great job
Bruh you solved my problem with this thanks my Yukon Denali I did some donuts at a meet 😅 and I left it was making this noise and I know it was the transmission cuz I just had it rebuilt last month so I came here to check the noise and you showed the same noise I’m like finally I’m going to sleep 😂😂
Glad I could help
Thanks man you helped me a lot right now I'm buying a used car!
Glad I could help
Awesome and thank you. Here I was worried my diff was going out and it ended up being bad shocks.
Please tell her to get a Lexus next time and obviously changed the fluid on schedule
I would love if someone would make a vid of various car sounds and just state what the sound may indicate. Just having the sound to play it for the mechanic
Dude that was on point thank you
My DTS had a rear clunking noise.
(My AC compressor/condensor was also being replaced)
I've had the car for about 2 years and this grind apparently coming from the rear diff, has been there ever since.
It was hard to hear over the other rumble sound coming from a bearing that has since been replaced, but man is it aggravating to know that my car is up on a rack right now waiting for a simple piece. She better run like new after this huh?!
Well if you were in a is300 group you could of got a lsd diff for a few hundred bucks and had it In a few days.

This mans a genius 🙌🔥
😁😁
I wanna know if they actually replaced it the first time around...I’ve heard from other folks at bmw dealer they say they’ll replace parts but they never did and just bandaid em till they break down out of warranty.
momo not sure if they did or not. Bolts had defiantly been messed with and it had been over a year sense i had checked it last. But with that been said I know several dealer techs and service advisors and never heard of them doing anything like that. I think it depends on the tech and how reputable the dealer is. Because they still get paid ... it takes them longer but they still get paid from the parent company.
My Cooper AT have those cups you're talking about. I thought it was just tire wear. I'll jack it tomorrow to check my struts.
Fords are garbage
Good video had no idea what my noise was until I watched this. Bad differential as well
I had an issue once.
Called it on the differential! Boy does that sound bad.
I’m not trying to do that if not needed
not sure on the set up on that car if the muffler needs to come down.
But good luck with the project!
Great video!! would have loved to see you make the repair on the issue
sorry .. for some jobs is just much cheaper just to replace the differential
Very informative video! I really appreciate it. Thanks
Great video. Going thru the same thing now with my 2015 cadillac cts.
2015 XTS-4 rear diff chronic (shuddering) problems. May have ruined the drive shaft this time. Both being replaced now.... GM had a technical svc. bulletin on rear differentials for 14/15 Caddy's & Buicks.
The dealer didn’t replace it!
"Here's your problem right here...It's a shitty Cadillac" 😀
i found sometimes driving alongside a wall with the windows down you can hear outside sounds easier
very true
I had that same bs problem on my Altima I was told to get a new Cvt transmission so I was also told change the cvt fluid every 30k after the first time which is 60k
Cvt transmissions have been known to have issues.
I have this car and the exact same issues you described. Not telling my mechanic though, gonna see if he can figure it out.
Glad I found this video. I have the same car making that samn damn sound!
yeah the diff but the gears id say are fine especially with it being a diff carrying assembly its the bearings for left and right axle and would check the back lash cause the pinion bearing prolly bad too the usually sound like this when the bearings get worn. The dealer prolly over filled it put thicker oil to quite it down so it would last outside warranty to screw here over
