@@chrisfix You're welcome , right now I'm watching how to replace wheel bearing by you , solid and sound instruction .Chris your channel is worth paying for (ha) I mean it
Great Job! My wife didnt want to work on her Jeep Liberty 2012 because we werent exactly sure what was making noise. I had her watch your vid, and she was all "THATS IT!, THATS MY NOISE!" A trip to O'Reily Auto Parts and $240 later, we replaced the bearing/hub. I broke loose all the really tight bolts and she did the rest. We are both in our mid 50's. Thanks again!
Wow you guys are so cool… did the bearing come inside the wheel hub already? The hardest challenge im going to have is pressing the bearing into the knuckle. It supposedly needs a press
I am NOT a mechanic by any stretch of the word, but i really appreciate how you get detailed in detecting and diagnosing the problems, as well as showing us how to detect them as well. I suspected my bearings were going out on my 2010 Chrysler Sebring, and sure enough, they are. Thank you for this video, as well as how to replace them.

Chris Fix is the best car-repair video maker I've ever seen! Watched 50 videos last 2 days, and the fast yet thorough professional editing Chris does just absolutely stands out from the rest. All the pertinent info, all the angles needed are shown, but none of the wasted time BSing and yakking. In this video, the fact he showed sound from bad, then good, then bad, good--WOW, exactly what we all need, who doesn't want the optometrist to do that A, B thing just one more time?? ;) Also, showing the bad bearing without play in hand, up near camera for sound, then ON THE CAR. He just goes the extra mile every time. But presents it all in a tight, fast scripted way. Absolutely subscribed! Thanks!
Chris Fix, I'm sure you've heard it a thousand times but I've watched your videos over a decade now starting out as a 15 year old kid helping my parents fix their cars and you still help me to this day! Thank you
I've been getting that noise in my Nissan Rogue. I thought it was an engine problem at first, but I watched your video and asked a mechanic and now confirmed it's a wheel bearing issue. Should be a cheaper fix than an engine problem!
Thank you Chris for all your videos. I have fallen on hard times due to layoffs at work and can't afford to pay mechanics anymore to do all my auto repairs and have been watching your videos and others and have saved myself thousands of dollars by now in doing my own repairs. But now I do have a roaring sound in my right front tire and I can move my tire from side to side and up and down on my 20o9 envoy. But now a mechanic friend came over today for a BBQ and I told him and he looked at it and said my outer tie rod is bad also on that same tire. I drive 144 miles round trip 6 days a week to and from work In the country so no stop and go. Anyway I'm going to watch your other video on checking the rods. Thank you for helping guys like me with your videos. Next problem I have to tackle is it runs roughy when you start it lol.
Thank you Chris. Now that i am an apprentice and work on cars, i get to appreciate your videos a lot more. This was 7 years ago but its good that it is still here for us to watch. Thanks again. 👍
For those who have tried the tests in the video, and still aren't positive they have a wheel bearing issue, this is what I'd suggest. This assumes you have the following: - Unusual sound (almost like a low throttle exhaust note) which remains even off-throttle. - It becomes noticeable around 40mph, and gets more noticeable the faster you go. - Trying to shake the wheel from the 3 and 9 o'clock positions doesn't reveal any play in the bearing. - There are no alarm codes on the dash - Can't tell if the wheel is rotating normally or not (especially on RWD cars that have independent rear axles). For these cases, it would be hard to test them by yourself. In that case, the best option would be to buy a mechanic's stethoscope ($5 at harbor freight), place it on the wheel bearing hub, and compare the sound between the different wheel bearings. If one has a metal grinding sound much higher than the others, it's probably time for a new bearing. Thanks for the video Chris!
Chris, great tips on ways of checking for the bearing problem, sometimes its actually very difficult to tell (by sound - hearing) which side it's coming from, another tip, if you have a good temperature probe, the bad bearing will typically run at least 10-20 degrees hotter than normal so if you compare bearing case temp from side to side you should notice something.
Hey Chris, Thanks for the video brother! I wasn't completely decided that i had a bad bearing in my 05 Malibu but watching your video, clearly showed me that i am 99% right that it is....The sounds and grinding is exactly what i am experiencing. Cheers, and thanks again.
It's amazing because I'm in school rn learning about all this but the books and websites they have us using to learn, well they aren't necessarily bad but. I typically look up to see if there's a ChrisFix video on it instead because his videos are WAY more in depth and I understand a lot easier. You truly are the best, thank you!
Awesome video. I’m not a mechanic but it helped me identify the issue with my A4. It was spot on diagnostic of front wheel bearing that I even bought the entire hub before I took to my mechanic. Thanks for all your videos and for showing in a way non-mechanis can understand.
As other have mentioned your videos, even being as old as they are, still emacuikate. While the quality has improved a ton. The principles used and basics are still the same and always has me coming back to watch!
WOW, don't understand all the downvotes! This video finished putting together all I needed to know after watching a prior video on replacing the bearings. Thanks for the thorough video.
I had that noise so I took my 2010 Tacoma to the Toyota dealer and they said I had a bad transmission mount. They replaced the trans mount under warranty but that did not fix the problem. It was the wheel bearings. Had to fix it myself. Dont trust them dealers!
+rudedogii can you be sure they changed the tranny mount? Pros are hard to find because people don't want to pay for their expertise. DIY'ers only shoot themselves in the foot because when they need a Pro they are scarce. Had they supported the Pro then he'd be there when needed. Think about it.
not related to bearings but more about good mechanics. I took my truck in for inspection and mentioned a code that had been thrown and hard 1-2 shift. He said replace or rebuild tranny without looking. He happened to mention what shop he uses for rebuilds. I figured I'd cut the middleman and go there instead. They actually scanned while driving and confirmed my suspicion. Bad TCC valve. They fixed it and works perfectly and for 1/5th the price of rebuild.
+rudedogii At least they didn't just blame your tires for the noise or the brakes for the scraping. I was under warranty and still had to replace both front bearings. their excuse? no play in the wheels.
Thank you for being so thorough!!! I just watched a video and the guy had his radio playing loudly while trying to show the noise from the bad bearing!

excellent tips! Another great way is to spin the wheel while also holding the suspension spring. A bad wheel bearing will resonate through and you will be able to feel it.
Cheers for this video. I don't know much about cars but realised something sounded really wrong when I had my radio off tonight. I've chased down a crazy bearing noise for a year on a 2018 Mazda 3. I have taken it to the dealer multiple times and never noticed in this video you can hear a slight whine in the sound comparisons. My car does that starting around 10mph and builds with speed. It resonates at 65mph exactly throughout the car and makes road trips unbearable... I noticed turning left slightly the other day that the noise basically disappears from the drivers side. Jacked it up and did the tests and you can feel and hear a slight clunk/clack at 12/6 positions and 3 & 9 have a lot of play. Definitely needs to be replaced! Thank you Chris!
Can you tell me which tire/wheel bearing was the culprit? The humming/roaring noise in my car is really bad around 60 mph, but goes away when I turn left. Two different mechanics have been unable to tell me which wheel bearing is bad. The most recent one said its a bad bearing and i should just keep driving until it gets worse, so it'll be easier to locate the bad bearing. The first mechanic just replaced pads and rotors; more than 500 bucks later, I still have the roaring noise. If the sound goes away when I turn left, which side is the bad bearing on?!?! Please help!
Another way to tell is if your car says "Chevrolet Cobalt" on it anywhere. That's a telltale sign your wheel bearing is going bad. Seriously, went through 3 in 100K miles. Otherwise, under rated car that is really pretty good.
All american made cars are shit. I have owned Toyotas most of my life and have NEVER had a wheel bearing problem. My wife wants a Cadillac, so I buy her one but let her know the transmission won’t last. 40,000 total miles and the wheel bearings have taken a crap. Come to find out, they only warranty them for 12 months. You KNOW they are purposefully installing cheap shit when they only warranty such an important part for 12 months. The replacement bearings ? Warranties for LIFE ! American cars suck horribly.
This is an awesome, and helpful video! I have a 08 Cadillac Escalade & the dealership was telling me that it was the Differential Ring and Pinion that was making that noise...
As a woman we are sadly yet still frequently taken advantage for unnecessary repairs. Having been around cars and watching my dad repair his when growing up. This video is everything I needed to test myself and confirm through hearing and the feel of the grit under foot, before going into the mechanic...so THANK YOU all the way from Johannesburg South Africa!
Just bought a used vehicle week before xmas, drove it home to visit parents. Thought I had a flat or nail in tire. Luckily got 3000 mile warranty. Glad I had the ear for it, and came across the channel. Wheel bearings should be covered under powertrain warranty..
Chris, this was a GREAT video. I normally do the work on my cars myself but this one was new to me. I had a suspicion that it was my wheel bearing but it didn't have play so several of the mechanics and friends I spoke with said it must've been something else. However, your video confirms all of the issues I have had. Thanks again.
Thank you, I plan to put my car up on a jack to do the test. my car sounds like an airplane engine! Being able to tell which side is so important to me because I need someone else to fix it and can't afford to get ripped off. thank you for empowering me.
When you spin the wheel on the Pontiac, i actually realized my wheel bearing must be bad if this is how a bad wheel bearing sounds like. Mine is like...101 the same. Think I'll have to take care of this soon. I know its not the tires cause i switched from summer to winter tires some 3 weeks ago. Noise still keeps bugging me but know i feel like i know for sure.
This video was super useful! I've been getting a strange noise coming from the passenger rear...and at first i thought my alignment was to blame. But after watching you describe the noise while driving (louder as speed and almost wind sounding); I immediately knew it was my bearing. And sure enough, i jacked it up and have the same looseness that you show when shaking the tire including a terrible squeak noise. Time to replace the hubs! (in pairs cause duh)
Good information. Thanks. A way to identify which front bearing (maybe even rear?) is making noise, is to make turns to the left and right. If the left front bearing is the problem, the noise will be present when loading that bearing (turning left) and will disappear/lessen when un-loading the left bearing (turning right).
what about rear bearings? does the turning method affect checking those? i got a very slight sound coming from the rear after getting new tires. the shop drove around and said it might be the bearing but list a bunch of possible replacements such as brakes and rotors, break shoes, parking brake kit, backing plates, bearing, etc. they said it might be the bearing verbally however i spoke to another experienced mechanic and he said it might just be the brakes and rotors since bearings on my SUV are supposed to last a long time
Good point but please confirm, I am getting noise while driving straight but when I turn right the noise disappear. This noise started coming after I had to hammer out the jammed all four winter tires to put on all season tires. Will appreciate your comments, thanks.
That's what mine is doing. A growling noise under 35mph. When I turn to the right it quits though. Could it be a cvjoint cause it's 4wd. Or could it be a bearing in the front differential where cvjoint goes in
Awesome video. I've experienced and replaced a few bad bearings in my life and you're right on. Sometimes, the howling noise goes up and down in loudness like a wobble.
Spinning the wheel of the Pontiac while on jacks to hear the wheel bearing was something I didn’t know. Thanks for adding it. (Once I thought I had bad wheel bearings, it turns out my new tires were just very noisy.)
This is exactly what my car sounds like right now. Going to try and buy the parts to do this fix myself, I was told front ones are bad but will probably also do the back ones.
Wish many mechanics in NYC or the country are as thorough as him without trying to pull a fast one on customers!!! Thank you Chris! Love the tassel hanging on the rear view mirror on the Mercury SUV!!
As usual, great video. Very thorough... I wasn't absolutely positive it was my wheel bearing on my truck, but I had that exact same roughness when turning my rotor that you showed and I ordered a wheel bearing hub assembly that's coming in next week and now that you showed the exact problem I'm having I'm confident it will fix it! Thanks, I always go to your videos if I have an issue with my vehicles. Great description, examples and thorough explanations!
I had a hard time finding out what that noise was, thought it was my exhaust, I kept hearing a noise from the right side, I looked an looked, finally jacked up the front of the vehicle gave it gas an listened underneath, heard a noise, so I pushed on the gas pedal again, heard the noise on the right front wheel, finally found out what it was, wheel bearing bad, I heard that noise for the longest time,, wow, finally changed it out, no noise now.
Watching this video and Reading your comment rally gives me a better feeling that I also have bad wheel bearings and not the exhaust. Noise gets loud as I accelerate then I slow down it gets loud but then kind of dies out. Thank you all so much. I'm really going to look closer and see what's going on.
Not a mechanic..If I get noise out of something. like a wheel. I replace it. The wheel has a lot of prssure on it and most likely will be part of the problem. i like the way Chris stresses safety.
It depends if your alignment was off before hand and if your wheel bearing was damaged from pot holes. Usually it’s a good idea to get your car aligned if it hasn’t been done in a while.
Love you man . Very thorough and detailed video . Helped make it easier for when I take the car to the mechanic and tell him what’s wrong instead of me acting like I don’t know and him over charging me for no reason
Thanks man that was exactly what I needed to know. I automatically thought my brakes were bad but it’s clearly my bearings. That’s exactly what my wheel sounds like. I think I’ll still do my front brakes and both bearings since I’ll be in there and my brakes are probably needed. Thanks bro
hello my brand new wheel bearing hub I just put on sounds like it is humming pretty bad I'm upset I just bought a pair of them from A1 auto parts have not replaced right side front yet
Pro tip: usually if you have a manual gearbox you can grab the springs and turn the wheel around, if you feel like a vibration that will be the broken wheelbearing. You can feel other springs to compare the vibration you feel.
Hey Chris, i know this video is 9 years old now, but this helped so much in diagnosing the wheel bearings on my 1999 Audi A6 Avant, i was correct in my initial assumption that it was the bearings but after looking up this video it basically confirmed it after i checked, so now will have the parts on order and next up is your video on actually replacing them :)
Mechanic engineering is a fascinating skill to learn and apply. A really excellent Man's Cave if you get my drift. Chris really remind us on how our dads used to fix their cars back in the 80's and 90's before we got soft.
Yea.......I need to warranty out my front bearings. O'Riley covers wear.......well....at least up here they do lol. They take care of customers. Bearings are 3 years old
Huh? Ford uses outsourced bearings, like Timken. Unless something has changed recently. My 1984 F250 4x4 still has perfectly good wheel bearings, and if they WERE bad I wouldn't be blaming Ford.
If the INNER race of the bearing is damaged, you will hear a clunk with each wheel revolution. OUTER race damage will produce a constant roaring sound.
There's just minor play in the tire itself, not in the rim which is attached to the wheel bearing. In the first example you could see play in the entire wheel.
This just suddenly popped up in my recommended and I just got back from a long drive. I knew something was off about the car but I couldn't tell what it might be since we just got new tires and an alignment. I will definitely get them checked now. The angelic algorithm at work again.
this is the most thorough and impressive auto repair channel ive seen. serious props

The first mechanic just replaced pads and rotors; more than 500 bucks later, I still have the roaring noise. If the sound goes away when I turn left, which side is the bad bearing on?!?! Please help!
@@jessamaallender1235 right side. You can take the wheels off and rotate them by hand and feel the grinding on a bad bearing.
Wow, thank you! I never had anybody to teach me this stuff, so glad you give thorough and to the point information. Definitely a subscriber!
Another way to tell is if your car says "Chevrolet Cobalt" on it anywhere. That's a telltale sign your wheel bearing is going bad. Seriously, went through 3 in 100K miles. Otherwise, under rated car that is really pretty good.
Papi Johnson Hahaha, dang that stinks!
I just got a cobalt today and this is the first video I watched.
GM/CHEVY
for sure
All american made cars are shit. I have owned Toyotas most of my life and have NEVER had a wheel bearing problem. My wife wants a Cadillac, so I buy her one but let her know the transmission won’t last. 40,000 total miles and the wheel bearings have taken a crap. Come to find out, they only warranty them for 12 months. You KNOW they are purposefully installing cheap shit when they only warranty such an important part for 12 months. The replacement bearings ? Warranties for LIFE ! American cars suck horribly.
I have a 2007 manual. I00+K miles never had a mechanical issue short of when someone rear-ended it. Been a solid car.
This is an awesome, and helpful video! I have a 08 Cadillac Escalade & the dealership was telling me that it was the Differential Ring and Pinion that was making that noise...
I’m glad the video was helpful!
Thanks Chris your video saved me thousands,I'm a middle aged ex-motor head that needed a little clarification and my truck is as good as new.
Awesome job diagnosing it! Glad the video helped
Excellent and professional video, congratulation Chris.
0:53 Mine is making a pounding noise - must be something else wrong with it.
WMichael S Actually, it's the opposite. So, if you turn right you will increase load on left front.
Ooops! Sorry, brain fart. Thanks for catching that!
what about rear bearings? does the turning method affect checking those? i got a very slight sound coming from the rear after getting new tires. the shop drove around and said it might be the bearing but list a bunch of possible replacements such as brakes and rotors, break shoes, parking brake kit, backing plates, bearing, etc. they said it might be the bearing verbally
however i spoke to another experienced mechanic and he said it might just be the brakes and rotors since bearings on my SUV are supposed to last a long time
IndividuallyWrapped y
Good point but please confirm, I am getting noise while driving straight but when I turn right the noise disappear. This noise started coming after I had to hammer out the jammed all four winter tires to put on all season tires. Will appreciate your comments, thanks.
Great Job , you won't believe such a video delivers how much knowledge to other people.
Thanks a lot! I'm glad you learned a lot from the video!
Awesome video, this has got to be the best description on how to diagnose bearings, ever.
Hey @ChrisFix is a bad wheel bearing also when you’re rolling at low speeds and it’s a grinding spinning noise
That's what mine is doing. A growling noise under 35mph. When I turn to the right it quits though. Could it be a cvjoint cause it's 4wd. Or could it be a bearing in the front differential where cvjoint goes in
@@dentondunn4346 mine is the exact same. Did you fix yours and if so what did it take
Chris, great video as always. With your tips, I was able to diagnose, replace, and make my own video on GMC Envoy wheel bearings.
Awesome video. I've experienced and replaced a few bad bearings in my life and you're right on. Sometimes, the howling noise goes up and down in loudness like a wobble.
Thanks
Spinning the wheel of the Pontiac while on jacks to hear the wheel bearing was something I didn’t know. Thanks for adding it. (Once I thought I had bad wheel bearings, it turns out my new tires were just very noisy.)
Gotta say Chris is the best with showing troubleshooting of issues.
I'm from Jersey, Chris is definitely a Jersey guy.
This is exactly what my car sounds like right now. Going to try and buy the parts to do this fix myself, I was told front ones are bad but will probably also do the back ones.
How hard was it to dk yourself? Debating on taking to mechanic or doing it myself
Excellent information. Thank you for being so thorough.
Thanks a lot! Glad you’re learning a lot and enjoying the videos!
Hey Chris, love your videos! Thank you! 53 still learning everyday. Peace..
Very nice video of wheel bearing diagnosis!
Thanks Terry
Good thing you didn't have a rear wheel drive car...
Incredibly well articulated and paced out video. Great job Chris
Thanks . 85$ for a new wheel bearing and 30 minutes of work did it for me.
Uhm I was looking for the sound of a broken bearing in a part of my 3d printer, but now I found out my car is broken. Thank you, I guess!
😂😂😂🤣🤣
Love your channel Chris!
Thanks for all the tips.
@ Chris Fix, thanks for the awesome how to videos!! Do i need to do an alignment after replacing the hub and bearing??? thanks for your time!
Thanks bro
Chris. I am new to your Chanel. Have not come across a how to video on how to replace a head gasket. Do you have video on that?
Woah I can see part of your face.... I need to sit down and have a glass of wooder...
Can it be mistaking as a Bent CV axle?? Or possibly cause premature wear on it?
One the best car RUclips mechanics out… us diyers appreciate you
Your video really helped me out and saved me time and money by going to a mechanic for a diagnosis thanks
Thanks Chris!
No problem
hello my brand new wheel bearing hub I just put on sounds like it is humming pretty bad I'm upset I just bought a pair of them from A1 auto parts have not replaced right side front yet
Pro tip: usually if you have a manual gearbox you can grab the springs and turn the wheel around, if you feel like a vibration that will be the broken wheelbearing. You can feel other springs to compare the vibration you feel.
I'm guessing you mean struts? Front shocks or leafsprings in the rear if it's a truck.? Seems like a good tip either way
Hey ChrisFix, I have an 01 chevy impala and whenever I'm driving it, it'll make a roaring noise. What is making that noise when I drive?
Bad girdle spring
The trunk monkey is hungry
Hey Chris, i know this video is 9 years old now, but this helped so much in diagnosing the wheel bearings on my 1999 Audi A6 Avant, i was correct in my initial assumption that it was the bearings but after looking up this video it basically confirmed it after i checked, so now will have the parts on order and next up is your video on actually replacing them :)
The world needs your channel
Thank you for your detailed explanation. Very good! Cheers
Thanks a lot Bruno!
Wow great information here, for sure it's my wheel bearing
Glad the video was helpful!
That’s exactly what mines sounded like thanks for the tip bro
Glad I could help!
Always a badass job at explaining and showing with simple straightforward words. Good job man thanks. I was clueless
Mechanic engineering is a fascinating skill to learn and apply. A really excellent Man's Cave if you get my drift. Chris really remind us on how our dads used to fix their cars back in the 80's and 90's before we got soft.
Ford is notorious for bad wheel bearings.. like on my explorer
So true, all the ford's Fiesta's, escorts and Focus I've had to replace the wheel bearings
Hahahaha! I love Fords. Even if they're complete turds, I still love 'em. They know what they want, don't they?
Yea.......I need to warranty out my front bearings. O'Riley covers wear.......well....at least up here they do lol. They take care of customers. Bearings are 3 years old
Huh? Ford uses outsourced bearings, like Timken. Unless something has changed recently. My 1984 F250 4x4 still has perfectly good wheel bearings, and if they WERE bad I wouldn't be blaming Ford.
Built Ford tough!
If the INNER race of the bearing is damaged, you will hear a clunk with each wheel revolution. OUTER race damage will produce a constant roaring sound.
Thanks for the tip!
@@chrisfix I see your face in the rear view mirror
If my driver side makes noise, like a scratchy noise only when I turn right. What can it be
CV Joint
A bad wheel bearing will heat up rapidly, Thanks Chris you have filled in the blanks for me!
this was the most thorough explanation on wheel bearing
Thank u sooooo much chris i finally figured out what that noise is 👍
No problem! Glad the video was helpful!
ChrisFix wasnt expecting a answer haha my first ever response from a big youtuber😆 love ur video's btw
3:33 um, there absolutely is play when shake the tire?
I don't get it. =(
There's just minor play in the tire itself, not in the rim which is attached to the wheel bearing. In the first example you could see play in the entire wheel.
You can clearly see the rim isnt moving
When my bering was going bad, it sounded like a swarm of bees was following me.
Thanks for sharing!
This just suddenly popped up in my recommended and I just got back from a long drive. I knew something was off about the car but I couldn't tell what it might be since we just got new tires and an alignment. I will definitely get them checked now. The angelic algorithm at work again.
Fricking bad bearing diagnosis clinic! Thanks Chris! Great job as usual.
for Land Rovers, a failed bearing sounds like a clicking noise and will often make a vibration. Will think its the CV axle but its the bearing
Thanks for the information!
