Sometimes they can give a wobble noise before the howl. Mine came on after getting all new tires. The heavier new tires were the straw that broke the camel's back and immediately brought on the noise. Naturally since it cane on with new rubber, I was convinced it was from a defective tire and so was my mechanic because we couldn't get any noise or movement on the lift, but it was very loud while driving We rebalanced and rotated the tires. The noise was still coming from the same spot. So I gambled and chaned the bearing. Problem solved. And even though it did not make noise while spinning the wheel on the lift, when we got it out, and spun it on the workbench we heard the grinding. Go figure?
Im a sexist a hole. I never woulda thought the best explanation and instructions would come from a woman like this. I am hands down impressed. Great informative video, more in depth than any I have seen on the subject.
Yup, thank you for this one, was a bit tougher on my truck as I have balancing beads in the tire but I could still hear it... And ultimately it was the sound, I couldn't feel much but the sound gave it away.
Hello can't thank you enough. My 2014 Ram was making same noise for about 6 months. I watched your video and took it to a mechanic and now its fixed. Bad bearing.
Over tightening with a impact gun will also set your ABS light on that hub. I found out after 6 months of trying to diagnosis my ABS light. Replaced a CV axle and tightened with a impact gun on the axle nut . Squeezed the axle into the hub and threw off my wheel sensor and tire speed. Lesson learned. Also you should replace your axle nut each time you remove it.
Was starting to hear the "howling" from the front of the truck. Got home and measured the rotor temperatures as close to the axle as practical. Truck was just parked with wheels on the ground. Using a hand held infrared thermometer, driver's side was 90F, passenger side 140F. Wasn't sure if it was binding brake pad or wheel bearing, but I knew which side needed work. Turned out to be wheel bearing.
I bought TRQ front hub and bearing set for my Chevy 2500HD, from you folks. Put them in to specs. Now 2500 miles later they are whining like crazy. Have not yet started to wobble thank goodness. They were replaced under warranty, but I'm afraid to put them in, I don't want to be doing front hubs every 2500 miles. Probably end up spending more and put in moogs.
For some vehicles Napa carries an entire knuckle with a bearing and hub already pressed in. Makes wheel bearing replacement a lot easier when the bearings are press in.
Just started a howling noice forming from the front end. 2015 gmc Sierra. Never had a howling noice before. So ima get in jacked in the air and take a better look at the front end/wheel bearings.
I had a bad bearing in my Camry and it made that noise. Thought it was the front right hub bearing because I hit a curb. Took it to a mechanic. Turns out it was the rear right. Glad I didn’t try to do it myself because when driving it 100% sounded like the noise was in the front. The mechanic did great work for me before. Used a stethoscope and determined it was 100% coming from the rear even though he agreed it sounded like it was in front while driving. If I tried to DIY I would’ve ended up replacing the wrong part!
Always a pleasure to hear and watch your videos you are a great instructor / teacher keep up the s great work ,you really make A1 Auto the placeto order parts and DYI .
What happened to the old style, when did they go away? You know, you remove the nut, cover, and pull out the bearing, grease it in your hand, and re-put it back in, install the nut, turn it , and cotter pin it? > When did they go away?
Ive had my rear brakes replaced and asked for an inspection to make sure nothing else was needing fixed i was told everything is ok, private mechanic. I've had my back tire fixed and asked for an inspection to make sure everything is ok. Goodyear . Went to Subaru dealership 2x , one for a transmission fix. Got an inspection.. Was given green light , came back a 2nd time cv axle broken , inspection... Green light. This month my car has been in the shop inspected by at least 5. I'm still hearing a howling noise. I know people miss things. But this is not something mechanics would miss. 3,rd time at the dealership and they diagnosed my rear bearings. By this time I'm living in my car due to the money I've had to put in it. I' wish this was an easy diy fix.
I have all terrain tires. So can’t hear the bearing howl! But it’s thudding some bumps. And wheels shimmy over road markers. And all suspension is new. And with looser steering. All suspension is new. Now my wheel might snap off. Now I’m going to tow my car and mostly likely they going to tell me a wheeling bearings are shot. When they all said everything was good. Did they even check them before? Or use a stephoscope? I’ll be surprised if it’s not a wheel bearing or ball joint! That 2 shops claimed they checked.
Thank you for a great video. My 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe was making noise from front end, so suspected wheel bearings. No wheel wobble, so wondered what was causing the noise. Rotating the suspect wheel did not make much noise, because not many RPM. Jacked all car up and ran engine to turn wheels. The vibration in the strut spring was the deciding factor. No vibration on the good side, but significant on the bad side. Removed the bearing assembly, and then you can tell that it's bad with that grating noise/resistance as you turn it.
Thank you for sharing your videos and knowledge. Would you also have a video on CV axle that happens to be making noise or around that area?! Cuz I have a 2015 Subaru outback 3.6R that when I am turning left, I hear a clicking sound noise. Not so much louder than turning to the right. Thoughts please. Thank you in advance.
My axle nut is tightened so much, i put all my 220pounds on a 6foot break bar to unscrew it, maybe thats why the car suddenly start to shake sometimes at higher speed
I was not aware of the potential problem of over tightening the wheel bearing by using the impact wrench for the axle nut. If I have over tightened should I back it off and verify the torque or is the damage done and the hub assembly need to be replaced?
I appreciate this video I thought maybe I. Had a CV joint problem but until.i saw this I know now that it's a ball bearing problem. How much would this job cost me
Excellent advice, especially the torque specs of the wheel hub, how many times I've seen under or not at all. Same with the wheels, yes I know time is money but use some common sense.
Hahaha. Used to have to turn stereo up to 25 to drown out noise. Got mechanic buddy to change both front bearing hub assemblies today. What a difference. Can hear stereo at 5 now.
I love your videos. I had my CV axles replaced and afterward, I did hear howling noise at high speed, also at 40mph there is sound like a distant helicopter. I believe they probably over torqued the CV Axle nut. I noticed less MPG and the car at hwy speed did not coast like it used to, it slowed quickly when off the gas. So I think my wheel hub/bearing is damaged. Over time it does seem to have improved but not normal. Is it worth loosening and re-torqueing the nut or is the damage done.
I've always found that the best practice is, if your going to replace one side, replace the other. otherwise you will be replacing the other side soon anyway.
Really complicated, but I'm getting the gist of what should happen. Very thorough mechanic. I wished she was near me. I'd book her in a heartbeat, if she was free! ❤. Probably has clients for three months in advance!🥰🤗😍.
She's good. I do hate these new sealed hub bearings. There's nothing better than the old application, with a castle nut and cotter pin. It was good enough in the commercial semi truck world, it has to be good enough in a small SUV or pickup.
Man I did that exact same thing you said don't do. Smdh order 2 sets of wheel bearings. And I did so can I had some play on the right side. Well that wasn't the problem so I check the tires there good so now I'm trying to figure out what's going on with my 2010 chevy malibu
Thanks for the video. I'm trying to diagnose (amateur mechanic) a vibration coming from the front driver side of my vehicle. I'm starting to suspect a wheel bearing also after seeing your video. May try what you did with the vehicle in the air. Thanks man!

2013 Tahoe 4x4. I get a howling starting at 55 up to 65. Sounds like its coming from the front pass. Everything up front feels tight. No noise just rolling it. Front differential oil was dirty but found no metal. Also have a bearing noise from the front when on the accelerator in 4x4. I can't seem to find it yet. Newer wheel bearings before we bought it. Maybe one was China junk
9:01 I always torque my bolts, even the mud guards, but from a technical point of view it’s not that critical for a wheel bearing, I know that because on a mk5 Volkswagen Golf GTI the axle bolt has two different torque specs depending on the bolt design, 6 and 12 point bolts without ribs are 200Nm+180degree turns, 12 point bolts with rib is 70Nm+90degree turn, that’s quite a bit of difference in terms of the preload, it’s pretty obvious the torque spec is more for preventing the loosening of the bolt than providing a specific preload.
what if your truck f 150 has a jingling sound along with an intermittent scraping coming from the tires as you drive. barely heard it when 20 miles from destination then when a couple of miles to destination it was getting load, you can hear it through all the traffic going by.
2012 Chevy Silverado 1500 5.3l LTZ has a humming noise in the front, so I replaced the driver side hub assembly, but the humming noise is still there. Funny thing is, it sounds like it's coming from the center of the front not where the wheels are. I don't like guessing because that's what I did with the hub assembly. This roaring sound is a constant sound that starts around 20mph and doesn't stop at a higher speed. Is it possible for it to be coming from the front differential or is that out of the question? The truck has 140k miles on it, but it's been treated nice over the years. I've checked all the fluids in the truck also. I've tried to pin point this sound by rolling up my windows and listening to it. It has me puzzled because I thought it was coming from the driver side, but it sort of sounds like its coming from the center of the front wheels. It's one of those traveling sounds. Let me know what you think.
Thank you, I gotta admit I’ve tightened down the axle shaft bolt with a impact before multiple times not knowing this and have think it was ok and wondering why I was going through wheel bearings so fast
Hi my name is Hector, I have a f150 xlt 2012 two wheels drive my problem is that I hear a winning grinding nose in the front driver side. I have drop at the Ford dealership for several days and two other place to check the problem but neither of them seem to locate the issue. Can you please help or direct me how to find the source. I had the truck from New and is in good condition. Thank you look forward from hearing from you.
+@ed370zx3 We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
So, you can actually mess up a brand new hub bearing over tightening it, dang. Because I've got howling from the hub a just bought, Thx for the info here.
I have 2013 ford Taurus limited mines is making this cloking noise & vibration once i give it gas. I thought it was my brakes & rotors i put a new set all around, sbd i put 4 new tires thinking it was the issues, but no i still heard & felt the noise & vibration i also put a driver side rear wheel bearing on because i heard noise. But after all this work i felt and heard this in the front end of the car. So do i change both front wheel bearing or just one.
So I drive an 09 dodge caliber and as of now I have to replace my front subframe due to rust that tore up my driver side swaybar bracket so it clanks against my tie rod I believe. I have negative camber on both front driver and passenger side tires. I jack up the front end and there is no play left, right, up and down of my tires. what would cause inner tire wear on both sides?
Got my wheel bearing assembly replace recently as well as brakes. However still have a low volume squeaking sound when driving not when breaking or turning. Anyone maybe know what it is?

I love her sense of humor and how incredibly thorough she is! "But it should be fine" had me rolling. Very good video, Sue.
The best , most involved video on RUclips regarding wheel bearings and hubs.

Love this video, her humor, and how detailed she is! Very fascinating to watch and learn!
Scotty Kilmer is better.
Excellent Sue! Thank you! With this video anyone should be able to diagnose & repair wheel bearing problems.
Nice video, my question, if you are having issues with one bearing at the front, should both ends be changed??
Good question
Great content. Just to be clear, you're saying to replace both the hub and bearings at the same time.

i've seen a video on here by someone else showing the clicking while turning sound caused by a bad axle. search bad axle clicking
I love your precise and clear explanations as what why when who them him her 🤣. Excellent content 👌🏾 to say the least. Keep em coming!!!
My axle nut is tightened so much, i put all my 220pounds on a 6foot break bar to unscrew it, maybe thats why the car suddenly start to shake sometimes at higher speed

This is one of the best explanation of a wheel hub assembly

Very well done..
curious about torque for large nut: if different if the threads are lubed (antiseize) or not?
Talk about dumb luck, I just changed my bearing on the grand Cherokee today.
Fun fact: when you buy a new dust shield to go with the new bearing, remember to put it on before you re-install everything.
Do as I say, not as I do lol.
What could it be if the grinding noise only occurs while taking a left curve? In strait aways no noise.
Yes, that happened and replaced it was from the front driver side.
Now after finishing the video, maybe whoever installed the front wheel bearing just hammered on the axel nut.
