    I think one of the main draws for this show without giving anything away is the complex emotional dynamics, especially between the two main characters. And I would urge anyone to watch it just to appreciate the fantastic acting shown by them throughout the show. I honestly didn’t really get drawn in the first time I watched it and stopped after one and a bit episodes but then when I came back to it later I became hooked. It really grabbed me second time round for some reason and I became obsessed. So in short yeah might be a bit of a slow burner but worth it because the writing and acting is excellent throughout.

    • @BritanyBinges
      @BritanyBinges  11 месяцев назад +17

      I'm really glad to hear that, even though it didn't hook you the first time around, you came to love it. That's what I'm hoping will happen for me.
      And, honestly, I think your comment made me realize why I wasn't instantly sold. I loved the visuals, the humor, the premise, the chemistry between the two of them, etc. so it was kind of confusing for me at the end why I wasn't super into it. But, I think it's because I wasn't really able to form any emotional attachments to any of the characters. That's the #1 most important thing for me when watching a show. So, it's encouraging to hear there will be some complex emotional dynamics. :)

    It's been a while, but i remember hearing that Supernatural Crowley was specifically named after/in reference to Good Omens Crowley. with the whole demon who's against the apocalypse because they like earth the way it is and don't want the world to end thing. that's all they have in common though
    the book came out in 1990 btw. season 2&3 of the show are from sequel that Gaiman & Pratchett plotted but never got the chance to write before Pratchett died.
    that might be why you have some trouble getting into it, actually- this ep wasn't meant to be a "pilot". season 1 wasn't originally meant to be a first season, it was meant to be the entirety of the show, just putting the novel to the screen. Neil Gaiman did not produce this show for audience/ratings/etc- the usual stuff pilot eps are grabbing for. He pushed it through as a tribute to his late beloved friend, Sir Terry. that it's done so well is likely due to the decades of the novel's cult following.

    • @BritanyBinges
      @BritanyBinges  11 месяцев назад +6

      That would make sense that SPN's Crowley was based on this one. I could definitely see some similarities just in this first episode.
      Good to know this wasn't exactly a traditional pilot. :)

      @CrystyTLucia 11 месяцев назад +5

      @@BritanyBinges exactly! I mean, I'm very glad that the story is being brought to new audiences like you who aren't already familiar with it. it's an amazing story and the cast&crew did such a wonderful job of translating it to live action. this is just one of those times when a little context on the background matters to understanding production choices
      also, i just realized I referenced a s03- that hasn't been made, but if it gets greenlit, that's where Neil's getting the plot from.

    It's a satire about trying to prevent Armageddon. The only other thing you should be aware of it that it is based on a BELOVED book, which explains the narration, etc. It's a labor of love for Neil Gaiman to give his friend Terry Pratchett (who passed away a number of years ago) a final wish, for the book that they wrote together to be adapted.

  • @gr1mreap3rz15

    i think the reason crowley suggested that aziraphale kill warlock instead of doing it himself is bc he's still operating under the assumption that warlock is the antichrist, and hell WANTS the antichrist to begin armageddon. crowley killing the antichrist would make him a traitor regardless, whereas aziraphale would be able to spin it as a good/angelic/holy act against hell, and so heaven may be willing to forgive him

    David and Michael actually weren't friends before they did this show. They only knew one another to say hi at a party or something DT said they became closer during the publicity tour phase of the series. And then they did their own show, Staged, during Lockdown.
    I would say give it at least three episodes before you decide. There are lots more characters to introduce, but I think it will gain you lots of viewers.

      Just about to comment this. Though, you could easily think they were bffs already at this point, as they had such immediate chemistry when they first made this show.
      It's funny to think how far they've come since then, with their families now entwined (especially in their show 'Staged'), and with even two of their daughters -- born a few days apart -- sending video messages to each other all the time. ❤

    The first episode of Good Omens had to cram a lot of info and introduce a lot of characters for a 6 episode series. It's not abnormal to find this episode a bit odd, even for extremely long time fans of the novel like me. Supernatural did pull some inspirations from Good Omens (and a number of other Neil Gaiman works as Kripke is a big fan of his), so when the time came SPN borrowed the name Crowley for their demon.

  • @ud2278
    @ud2278 11 месяцев назад +4

    At first, I wasn't fully onboard with Good Omens either. I watched the show because of David Tennant (soon after I watched Broadchurch which was an AMAZING show), and I had no idea who Michael Sheen was (I watched Twilight when I was a teen so I didn't remember much). I'm not from an English speaking country, I hadn't read the Good Omens book (or anything by Neil or Terry for that matter), and I was not a Christian. So I had NO IDEA what I was in for.
    As you might already understand, coming from a place like that, the show did feel a little "silly" but I stayed for Michael-David dynamic. They are SO GREAT as Aziraphale and Crowley, I didn't really care much for the plot! After Season 1 was done, I didn't think about Good Omens again mainly because it was advertised as a "limited series", a one off and Season 1 ended without any loose ends. Plus, this was 2019. I wasn't into any social media, so I was oblivious to the references, easter eggs and theories surrounding the whole show. However, since I loved Michael and David... I wished maybe they could work together. Then the Covid lockdown happened and I stumbled upon RUclips clips of "Staged" - a zoom call format comedy show David and Michael did during Covid. Staged was hilarious and very well done so I started loving them together so much more! On a whim, I decided to read Good Omens. AND OH BOY. I LOVED THE BOOK SO MUCH! I went back and rewatched the show, fell in love with it and AziCrow all over again! Now I cannot even imagine ANY other actor playing Aziraphale and Crowley. I also watched other reactors and their discussions which made me realize how brilliant the show actually is (as I didn't really know about Christianity this helped me a lot!). I slowly got into the fandom and read theories and explanations... honestly I regretted how LATE I was for everything.
    I know there are people who will not be into shows like Good Omens for different reasons, but I believe if there is enough *curiosity* to look for things around Good Omens... many more people will come to love it so much more. That's what happened with me. I was in for Michael-David's chemistry initially but I stayed for the brilliant story telling once I understood what the show means.
    And Season 2 did not disappoint! I can safely say I love it more than Season 1 even though the ending was a little painful. I really really hope we get a Season 3 - the cast and crew deserve it and we do too.

    Hi Britany. The book and the show is largely a parody of the Classic horror movie The Omen and a lot of the humor relates to that and the book of Revelations. It's definitely worth watching especially if you like Queen music. Just a quick note the name Crowley is almost certainly taken from the British occultist Aleister Crowley who had a reputation of notoriety in the occult societies of the early 20th century. Your Supernatural character was likely named after him too.

    Please give Good Omens a chance, it's a fantastic show. It comes across as quite silly and hard to follow at first if you go in blind, but it's worth sticking through. When I first watched the pilot around when it came out, I wasn't very interested either, but I gave it another chance and was pleasantly surprised. Like you, I'm a very character-focused person when it comes to tv shows, and this show does not disappoint in that area, especially with the two mains. Without giving anything away, season two delves even more into the characters, and in my opinion that makes it worth sticking with.

  • @ListerDavid
    @ListerDavid 11 месяцев назад +4

    I feel it’s wrong calling it a pilot as it wasn’t it’s chapter 1 of a 6 part story so it’s not meant to been seen on its own, a pilot is a stand alone episode to show what the stow could be. This was meant to be a single series as it’s based on a book my Terry Pratchett and Neil Gainman, series 2 has been but together from notes for a second book that was never finished due to Terry Pratchett sadly passing away.
    It’s worth sticking with it to get the full story, as it plays out like a novel.

      @BritanyBinges  11 месяцев назад +3

      That is a very valid point, but definitely not something I would've been aware of beforehand since I tend to go into shows with very little information. It's also more nuanced than a simple RUclips series or individual reaction needs to be.

    As someone who loves your Doctor Who reactions and Good Omens I am so excited you're reacting to this! I hope you're able to stick with it. I love Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett so I pretty much loved it from the start as I read the book years ago before this came out. So I can't really comment on not liking it at first and it growing on me but I will say it does pick up the pace as the season goes along. It just has a slow start.

    • @lindsay859
      @lindsay859 11 месяцев назад +2

      Also I wanted to add just in case you're interested, Neil Gaiman was heavily involved in the production. Terry has passed away and it was his dying wish to have the book made into a film adaptation and to have it done well. It's something they both had been trying to do for years. Immediately after the funeral Neil went home and started writing the first episode. His one goal with this was to make Terry happy. So in a way this series is a tribute to his dear friend ❤

    Though I *really* struggled with the premise of the biblical timeline, at the insistence of a friend I stuck with it and was rewarded. A large part of it was due to David Tennant and Michael Sheen's performances as their characters do various shenanigans in their attempt to prevent the end of the world.

    Definitely worth continuing with this one, it's a pretty densely packed story but you seem to be following it so far. There's a surprising amount of character development yet to come, and great new characters that you haven't even met yet. I loved season 2 but I don't know how everyone else feels about it, so if you decide to only do one season (or hold off on season two) that would be fine. Season one has an ending to the story just like the book so it's safe to stop watching there if you like.

    The basic plot for this episode - the satanic nuns, swapping of the American Diplomat's new born son for the baby Antichrist, raising of the child by a satanic Nanny - was based on the 1976 horror film "The Omen". Though in "The Omen" the switch goes off without any hitch unlike in "Good Omens".
    There is a Doctor Who connection between "Good Omens" and the 1976 "The Omen" with David Tennant (the tenth doctor) starring in "Good Omens" and Patrick Troughton (the second doctor) appearing in a fairly major role as the priest father Brennan in "The Omen".

The one where the little girl would draw things that would disappear and be stuck in the drawing. This is part of why I live British shows so much. You can actually make a game out of it. I’m guessing Brits think our Six degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon game was just silly. They’re all connected over there. I love it.

    The humor is very British. Either you like it or you don't. Seems you're maybe in the last category
    I read the book back when it was first released and a few times more in the following years. Then i forgot all about it cause... life.
    When this show came out i did not know it was a book. So i kept telling my now grown up son. "I have seen this before. I know what happens next" I could not understand it because it was a brand new show and not a remake. Later Of cause i realized it was my old bellowed book.
    This show is the best most faithful book to TV or movie i have EVER in my long life seen. Neil Gaiman did a wonderful loving memorial for his friend Terry Pratchett when he made it.
    BTW your resistance to the name Crowley used here. This is the original. The book Good Omens was released in May 1990 long before Supernatural was a stray thought in its autors brain. So it is SN who stole it from GO not the other way around.
