The start of new Who’s best ever season

You're missing a bit of connecting tissue . . . Ned Stark sent a messenger to Stannis with the truth. Now Stannis sends a message to all the Lords. And of course, Littlefinger and Joffrey hear the whispers. And Craster knew Jon was a bastard because of his surname. I always like the way this one subverts expectations concerning Dany - after Season 1 you think she's now a mighty force, unstoppable; but here she's starving in the desert.

Every comment so far has touched on everything I was thinking of commenting on ha! I do agree for a season opener they did a really great job on covering all bases. On the Craster bit, north of The Wall, it'll help if you had a map of Westeros (and Essos) so you had an idea where his cabin is in relation to the Night's Watch and North of The Wall to know how key of a location it is for them. Obviously the map will also help you follow along throughout the rest of the show as well.

I thought it was funny how you/you're editor blurred out Hodor's ass AFTER you showed the full frontal uncensored.

In the poison scene, the old man (the Maester of Dragonstone, serving Stannis) drank the wine he knew was poisoned to give the impression to Melissandre that it was safe to drink before he offered it to her.

Craster's giving them shelter, but he's also giving them information. The Watch doesn't much like him, and he doesn't much like them, but as a purely business arrangement it tends to work out well for both. It's like giving a terrorist who hates you a big stack of money in exchange for information about some other terrorist; realpolitik in action.

Craster miiiiight know ned stark's son joined the night's watch but unlikely. He doesn't know who he is he just knows to call anyone with the last name Snow a bastard because bastards don't get their family name in Westeros, they get named for the territory they were born in. Snow for the north, Rivers for the riverlands, Sand for dorne, etc etc.

I'm glad you appreciate Sansa's character and are excited to see her grow, it's so disheartening how many people misunderstand or disregard her or the fact that she is also a child

Ned sent a letter to Stannis about illegitimacy of Joffrey's claim to the throne. And in this episode Stannis widespread information. That's how everybody know about Jaime and Cersei.

I think you hit the nail towards the end - though Adrian Scarborough is a pretty well-respected actor he just didn't have the magical 'it' to make him stand out. So his worries about the afterlife fall flat and his self-sacrifice is shoulder-shrugging. Like Scarborough itself, he leaves you cold. (Only joking, people of Scarborough!) As to the over-arcing plot - I guess it's about the Doctor doing something he hasn't done before, weaning himself off his companions. And it isn't terribly interesting, unfortunately. The mysteries lie elsewhere, because Moffat was thinking of the future.

Problem with the Doctor's morality is that it's unprincipled. It changes on his moods, his whims, and Amy's (or whichever companion) pleas. That makes him not impartial, which means that his moral judgements are, in general, not moral. I blame the writers for having a screwed up morality depending on what feels good to them, or what they think will appeal to the audience, or what they think should appeal to the audience. And I'm afraid I haven't thought much of the Doctor Who writers team's morals in a very long time.

I love cheesy endings.

This is not the first time the Doctor has been in the wild west but this one i have to say was better than "The Gunfighters". A second rewatch always helps makes the episodes better some Dr. Who rewatches we understand them better in context. When i first watched the Jodie episodes i was abit critical and confused but i've just recenly rewatched them in 5 years and finished her era and i have to say they were better than i remembered them and really enjoyed them better.

To be fair, the whole, "Let us go be at home for a while" doesnt necessarily mean the Doctor would be on his own while they did this. The Doctor could literally just drop them off at home, then immediately pop a couple months into the future when they ARE ready to adventure again. 😂

Doctor Who has a way of taking ordinary items and making them scary - store dummies, Christmas trees, etc. But it doesn't get so scary that kids can't watch it. Though they may have to watch while hiding behind the couch.

Rose is still literally a teenager at this point (19). She recently had to lose her father (again) and isn't ready to lose a friend she grew up with (Micky). You might call it attachment issues. It does get resolved, but it will take some more episodes to happen.

Ben Browder is my favorite guest star here. He’s best known as John Crichton on Farscape, a show where he’s the only American actor in a sea of Aussies. The amount of American guest stars on NuWho who were already known when they did up to this point? Very tiny. We were still over a decade away from pickups like NPH and Jonathan Groff. So it’s kind of cool how a rarity he was on two continents.

There's another Doctor Who reactor who uses the forehead opening gag on her channel on herself. It's pretty funny.

Not sure Who has to have a point. In fact I’d argue it’s at its best when it doesn’t have an obvious point and just explores something with intelligence, tension, atmosphere etc. (it’s why it doesn’t always work as a story-arc based concept, I feel) This episode is absolutely magnificent. So well written and acted, such a penetrating look at human gear and manipulation. Who is often at its best when the Doctor loses, or fails in some way. This is a perfect example of this

10/10. One of Who’s greatest ever stories (new or classical) - brilliantly acted by all, tense, philosophical, exploring what it is to be the Doctor and what he sacrifices and is prepared to sacrifice. Love,revenge, courage, bravery, devotion, service… it’s all in here. Just great And it’s just as good on repeated rewatches

Obviously the first half of Series 7 is fairly self-contained and mostly focuses on the gradual departure of the Ponds but it also explicitly starts drawing up the whole “you shouldn’t travel alone” thing again and this episode in particular I think is really significant for explicitly digging up the Time War angst again. It’s not exactly novel and the Doctor’s morality is pretty much always interrogated but the Doctor snaps so hard in this episode because Jex hits a serious nerve. Considering this series is directly heading towards the Doctor having to suffer that choice again, it’s definitely a notable episode imo.

No matter how many times I watch this episode I can still only see Adrian Scarborough (jex) as mr jolly from psychoville 😂

One half of one of the all time great Who stories. Marvellous For one they made a new who historical with people acting, talking and thinking pretty much like they would at that time and in that setting (English boarding school, not an American ‘military prep school’)

i’ve always had this as a personal fave. i love when doctor who does genre stuff, and there’s some really interesting parallels driven by excellent performances from Smith and whoever’s playing Jex. genuinely can’t fathom why it’s not more popular!

I really like watching your reactions. This show is so fun and the characters become so easy to be invested in. I absolutely love Cal’s character. In the comics he isn’t fleshed out like this and more traditional villain.
