    As far as the name Crawley or Crowley goes , in the original book, during the Garden of Eden section he is calls himself Crawley because he was the serpent who tempted Eve. As time went on he changed it to Crowley to fit in with humanity. Like Aziraphale is later known as Mr. Phale.

      Both this Crowley (from a book written 1989, so he's the original) and the one in Supernatural are probably named after infamous occultist Aleister Crowley. Our Crowley started in the earliest drafts as Crawleigh and later Crowleigh

    In case you don't already know, this is based on the novel Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, the latter best known for the Discworld novels. There had been attempts to adapt the book prior to this that never came to fruition; per Terry, the first time Hollywood showed interest they wanted to cast Macauley Culkin (then just recently in Home Alone) as the Antichrist. Terry sadly passed away before this was made, and Neil made a point to personally oversee this adaptation and make sure it was good as a possible because he knew how much it had mattered to his late best friend.
    The name Crowley both here and in Supernatural are nods to the real-world infamous self-proclaimed sorcerer Aleister Crowley.
    The Satanic Nuns and switching the infant Antichrist for an American ambassador's newborn makes more sense if you've ever watched The Omen, a 1970s classic horror movie that provided a chunk of the inspiration for Gaiman and Pratchett, who co-wrote the novel this series is based on. Those plot points are straight out of that movie, hence this story, which partially parodies that, being called Good Omens. That's also where the Mother Superior gets the name Damien that she suggests naming the child; Damien is the Antichrist's name in The Omen. And the demonic nanny and hellhounds are also straight out of that film.
    Another influence on this story are old Cold War spy stories. The idea was that agents of (say) the USA and USSR stuck long term in foreign lands often ended up finding they had more in common with each other than their masters back home, and ultimately becoming friends even if they were nominally on opposite sides.
    It's never mentioned in the TV version, but there was a running joke in the novel that any CD left in a car too long inexplicably transformed into Queen's Greatest Hits. Hence why Crowley arrives to meet the other demons with Bohemian Rhapsody blaring.
    Adam and his gang of friends are a nod to the type of kid groups Enid Blyton used to write about - The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, etc.

      I thought Adam & Them were riffing off Enid Blyton too but turns out it goes back older, to the "Just William" stories by Richmal Crompton. You can draw the literary line of descent from Richmal Crompton, to Enid Blyton, to J.K. Rowling: they all form part of the heritage of English children's literature.

    • @moreau1755

      @@SoonLeeNZ True, Adam is a riff on Just William, but his gang - 4 kids and a dog - are the Famous Five. Adam even calls them "The Really Well-Known Four" at one point in the novel. Like many things in Good Omens, there's not one source but many blended together.

    The book that the first season is based on started as a parody of _The Omen_ (1976) which was a hit movie about an American diplomat whose newborn son is replaced by the baby Antichrist.
    Also, Aleister Crowley (rhymes with “holy”) was a real-life occultist/religious leader in the first half of the twentieth century. His teachings influenced the founders of modern Wicca, Scientology, and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

      @SoonLeeNZ 10 месяцев назад +6

      English Children's Literature is also a big part of this series' DNA, specifically the "Just William" stories. Neil Gaiman (Sandman) & Terry Pratchett (Discworld) who wrote the "Good Omens" book that this is adapted from are both English. This is the only book they wrote together which is a pity because I would have loved to have seen more, but their respective writing careers really took off after this. They are among my two favourite writers.

    Eric Kripke is a Neil Gaiman fan. Yes he did use this idea of Crowley.
    The 24/7 idea where everyone tells the truth in The Sandman was also used in Supernatural.

    A lot of the actors are indeed familiar; playing Hastur you have Ned Dennehy, who played Uncle Charlie in Peaky Blinders, for example, and later on you'll see Lourdes Faberes, who was in episode 5 of The Sandman, "24/7". There's also Brian Cox, Scottish legend, recently was in Succession. Jon Hamm of Mad Men fame. Mark Gatiss was in Sherlock, as was Siân Brooke. Nick Offerman, well-known for Parks and Recreation, and more recently for The Last of Us. This show has a fantastic cast

    With your _Sandman_ reactions done, it seems that one good Gaiman deserves another… well, the same Gaiman, along with a Pratchett for good measure. So, here you are, at the beginning of the end. I’m sure you’ll enjoy this apocalypse of errors, and this was a lovely start.

    Yay, appreciation for the intro!
    I think the Crowley name is popular for demons in fiction because of Aleister Crowley.
    The actress who plays Deirdre (Adam's mother) also played Sherlock's sister on BBC _Sherlock._
    Thank you for recognizing that this Crowley is pronounced like crow, not like crowd. (It's not the American accent; reactors from both sides of the Atlantic get this right and wrong about evenly. Of course, the same thing happens with Rowling, but who really cares anymore.) This character is from the 1990 book, so he predates _Supernatural._ I have read somewhere that the creator of _Supernatural_ was a fan (I have not fact checked this).
    Looking forward to more.

      The Aleister Crowley reference is right, but iirc the book also makes it a pun on 'crawly'. Because he was the snake.

    • @HuntingViolets
      @HuntingViolets 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@morlock2012 Yes!--the show does too; he is a snake in Eden and has the name Crawly (in the book he is dissatisfied with it even in Eden) and later changes it to Crowley, finally adding the "Anthony J." at some point prior to his meeting Aziraphale in 1941 (and long enough to be famous among a certain element, apparently).

    So happy you react to my favourite show!!
    Both Crowleys are named for the mystic Alastair Crowley.
    I've seen many reactions by Americans and they all, except for one, were unable to pronounce Crowley like in "crow". So it does seem like an American pronunciation

    • @HuntingViolets
      @HuntingViolets 10 месяцев назад +2

      I've seen many reactions by people from various countries and seen Americans do it right and wrong and Brits do it right and wrong. (Some correct partway through.) There's really no reason an American would be incapable of pronouncing it with a long O. We (in general) can pronounce _crow, holy, bowling,_ etc.
      I see (or, rather) hear the same thing happen with JK Rowling's name (I'm sorry to use this as the example), but most people only ever see that name whereas on this show one hears it. I think it may be because so many people watched _Supernatural_ first. Anyway, I know this is a boring comment. I enjoyed the reaction and look forward to more.

    Excellent :D Love seeing new folks finding this show. *gets popcorn *
    If you enjoy reading, then you may enjoy the book as well, though I'll be honest, it has aged a little in places. One of the authors (Neil Gaiman) had very close involvement with the show, and is pleased with it, so I feel like this isn't a "you need to read the book for context" sort of situation. But it's still pretty funny, and not terribly long. It does do a slightly better job at explaining things like the kids, and a few things in later episodes.
    (An aside, but the overlap in fandoms between this show and the series Our Flag Means Death is basically a circle, so if you enjoy this show, then that's another brilliant one to have on your radar at some point in the future :) )
    Something that is common to many of Gaiman's stories is that Names Are Important, especially when you're dealing with magic or similar things. Naming the hellhound "Dog" influenced its shape and purpose. It's also a deeper cut though, because the boy was named "Adam", and Adam (in the bible story) named the birds and beasts, so of COURSE someone called Adam would name a dog... Dog. 😂 (It's also why the nuns were trying to get the antichrist named Cain or Damien or Warlock, because names influence a thing.)

      I think Gaiman has become a bit of a Tolkien, in his own right. Anymore, you’d likely be very hard pressed to find someone writing something like _Supernatural_ who wasn’t influenced by Neil to some degree.

    I'm American but I've never watched Supernatural and I was confused when another American doing reaction videos kept pronouncing Crowley's name like the character from that show. (Please, don't anyone recommend Supernatural to me, it won't work, I prefer to find shows by myself and if someone hypes it to me, that will turn me AGAINST it and I'll never watch it. I'm sort of contrarian like that.)
    Anyway, Good Omens Crowley is my favorite character because #1 he's played by my favorite actor, David Tennant, and #2 he's a character type I've always loved, the person who's supposed to be evil but is sort of conflicted and always ends up doing the good thing though he's not supposed to, also he's funny and kind of sweet. I'm not as familiar with Michael Sheen but I do enjoy him too as Aziraphale. I'm looking forward to the rest of your reactions.

      Oh and by the way, Crowley saying he didn't fall, he just "sauntered vaguely downwards" is a quote from the book's introduction of his character.
