      I think the "black man" has a double meaning 1.) the black man has the same meaning as the big bad wolf in European culture. something that punishes or torments and tortures 2.) The video shows a black woman with her child sitting on a barbed wire seat. it's about the fear of refugees from Africa. about a fear of uncertainty and of the unknown. Rammstein has shown in many actions that they are in favor of taking in refugees in Europe.

      Yes Bogeyman is Der Schwarze Mann, but here it is a metaphora for everything foreign and strange. Things that people think they have to be afraid of.
      Obviously its referring the Covid years and all the conspiracy weirdos that popped up, and also the Angst that african or arabic refugess come to Europe with bad intentions.

      in diesem Fall bedeutet es beides , das ist auch schon so gemeint das vor der Angst vor Fremden auch Fremdenfeindlichkeit entstehen kann, so wie manche Politiker diese Angst bewusst schüren um die Massen hinter sich zu scharren. Und der Fernseher muss wohl dran glauben, weil durch den Medien auch noch die ganze Angst verbreitet wird.

    Black Man (Der schwarze Mann), sometimes called Bogey Man, is a traditional German game and one of the oldest games in the line of Western European chasing games that had been described already in 1796 by Johann Christoph Friedrich GutsMuths. It draws on ancient "plague games" in which the catcher epitomizes the Black Death. Everyone he touches becomes a bearer of the plague. In a broader sense, the character in the game represents death itself. The game ends in the triumph of the Black Man, whose power goes on increasing with each new capture.

    • @haraldmax9685
      @haraldmax9685 2 года назад

      The black death plague. In the Middle Ages, plague doctors wore all black clothing, i.e. they were completely covered in black from head to toe and wore a completely black face mask with a beak. Where these figures appear, death dwelt.

      Nice story. But it has nothing to do with the song. This song is about the black man. A character used to scare children when they are not well behaved. I heard that from my parents when I was a kid. I'm not much younger than the people from Rammstein and grew up in the GDR. A lot of kids had to listen to that. I think Til too. But the song isn't about scaring kids. But to make fear as an instrument of power to make people docile. It's also about instilling fear! fear of the stranger. In Germany there are quite a few people who are afraid of foreigners. Especially those who come from Africa. They are defamed as thieves, rapists and stabbing. These people are repeatedly the subject of hate speech on the Internet. Especially right-wing parties and Nazis are spreading this fear. At the end of the video you can see the band eating a candy. This used to be called N…Kuss in Germany. N stands for the despising word for Africans.

    • @christianschmid1440
      @christianschmid1440 2 года назад +3

      @@cestarrivepresdechezvous1789 I think it is both.
      The boogie man game resulted from the stories kids were told. 'be nice or the black man is coming to get you.'
      In german 'black man' has a different more direct meaning though.
      On the on hand its this nightmarish creature on the other hand is used to describe 'the african migrant'.
      It is not a coincidence and defintly planned here, absed on the intro and the outro.

    • @69quato
      @69quato 2 года назад +6

      @@cestarrivepresdechezvous1789 Well , I'm German as well and I have to point out that the OP is absolutely right since he is refering to the origins - that's why it has become a commonly used threat to ill behaved children.
      Actually the game is very usefull in an educational way for children , like all chasing games - not only physically but mentally as well - experiencing and learn to deal with fear and threat in a playfull way.
      The literal translation of schwarzer Mann would be indeed black man , which is a double entendre of course, and I agree with you about the fear ofrefugees being used as an example to point out the effects of populism.
      I find the progression of the video most intersting though - the "neighbours" were chating and laughing together over the fence in the beginning - in the second verse they start to wall in themselves, isolating from each other - culminating in shoorting each others picture on the TVs in the breakdown, while being cheered on by the "home crowd".
      To me this song to me is a social comment on opinion bubbles , internet hate and the breakdown of communication/debate and "real life" social interaction.
      Notice how Black&White turns into colour while Till smashes the TV / screen at the end.

  • @mythicdelirium
    @mythicdelirium 2 года назад +11

    A lot of folks seem to miss this, but the video is basically about the "madmen" ranting on our computers and televisions making us afraid of our neighbors. When the neighbors portrayed by the band start shooting at the televisions, the images on the tv screens are not Till's face, but the security camera footage of their next door neighbors, who are also holding assault rifles. It's a pretty perfect metaphor, perhaps lost in a first viewing because it doesn't show up large on a computer screen, heh.

    The most accurate English translation of Schwarzer Mann would be Boogieman. The concept probably exists in every culture, something you scare your kids with to make them behave.
    My first interpretation revolved mainly about racism, the European refugee crisis of 2015/16 and BLM protests in the USA, since that is what the imagery of the video shows to us.
    But after watching the video a bunch of times and reading other comments, my interpretation is now a bit broader:
    Everybody is afraid of something/someone, has their own Boogieman. Be it black, white, left, right, gay, religios, atheist, etc.
    And for every one of these fears, there is media stoking it. That can be everything from state sponsored propaganda down to social media bubbles spreading their specific fearmongering messages against their audiences' Boogiemen. And somebody always profits from the fear they spread.
    The part where the band builds up walls and arms themselves shows the general mistrust to everyone who is not part of their specific group, after being fed these fear-inducing messages from the media. And then their TVs show them that everybody else is also armed and dangerous, leading to everybody shooting the middle and destroying the foundation of the society they all live in, causing their own downfall.
    We, as a society, must tear down those walls, lay down those arms and start talking with each other. And the media profiting off the fear they spread needsto be ignored for that to happen.
    By the way, the candy they're eating during the credits is what Wikipedia decribes as "Chocolate-coated marshmallow treats". In the past in Germany, there were several names for these sweets, which are today (rightfully) considered racist and no longer in use. There was a lot of media coverage about the name change a few years ago and a lot closet racist conservatives were outraged that they couldn't call them "Negro Kisses" anymore.
    So yet another hint that Rammstein are definitely adressing racism in the video, but also so much more.

      Thank you. I saw the video a couple of times too and also some reactions to it. I have to say your comment is, in my opinion, the most accurate. The song is about the fear of everything unfamiliar but with strong inplications to the refugee crisis and the media, which blew it up unproportionally.

    • @MusicalPilgrim
      @MusicalPilgrim 2 года назад +4

      I am absolutely with you and blackcap 666.
      First time I saw the video - in the final scene I thought it's all about the refugee crisis in the last years. The first wave with millions of people leaving their countries came from Africa to Europe and I thought the colored mother with her child on the beach represents those refugees. The media shows us them coming, people get crazy by fear and want to protect their homes and life's.
      But now - after watching a lot of reaction videos an reading many comments - I think this is only one of many fears the people have. In this example the refugee is the bogeyman - but he alway can represent other fears that the media sells - and people get crazy and have "AAAAAAAANGST!!!!!" ;)

    Yeah, to me the song is drawing parallels between the stories we were told as kids about how we need to fear the boogeyman, and how these days the media (main stream, alternative, social etc.) Have us afraid of everyone and everything and we build up literal and figurative walls to keep ourselves "safe", when in fact all we are doing is separating ourselves from our fellow man.

    As allways Rammstein songs are made for multiple interpretations…
    Maybe it’s about the fear of the bogeyman
    Maybe it’s the fear for all the non familiar things in our world
    Maybe they call out the fear of foreigners and people with other cultural backgrounds (yes unfortunately that is still today a common thing in Germany)

    They're eating whipping cream on a thin waffle, covered in chocolate. These were originally called "Negerkuss" (negro's kiss), but the name is understandably frowned upon, and these days, they're named differently. I'm not sure what, I left Germany a decade ago. The Bogeyman is called "Schwarzer Mann" (black man) in German, so they close the circle here with a nudge at the double meaning, pointing at fear of things like immigration etc. The red cables also have multiple meanings. For one, red is a colour that symbolises fear, but there's also the "red thread", the connective tissue, that you can see in other videos, as well, like in Deutschland.

    • @Trainwheel_Time
      @Trainwheel_Time 2 года назад +1

    Did no one notice, the majority of the Video is filmed in Black/White/Red, which are the colours of the flag of the Kaiserreich and also the „Reichskriegsflagge“? Both flags has been shown multiple times on ralleys against refugees, Covid measures, etc.. Also the wheel sign at Tills lectern, looks like a simplified Schwarze Sonne (black sun), which is a popular symbol often used by Nazis as well. To me, by using these elements, Rammstein does clearly indicate what kind of people they do portray here.

    Na minha época de infância, aqui no Brasil, quando os pais queriam por medo nos filhos eles falavam que o homem do saco ia passar pra pegar a gente, basicamente era um homem mal vestido, sujo e mal encarado que andava carregando um saco nas costas, ele passava recolhendo crianças malvadas, jogava elas dentro do saco e depois desaparecia, e isso funcionava, a gente tremia só de ouvir "homem do saco" kkkkkk

    Hey, me again... ;) ...they're eating so called "Foam Kisses" at the end of the video; just google, how they were called in the past here in Germany - even that says something about the song, the video and its meaning, I think. A LOT of interpretation possibilities here.

    The "black" or "bogey" man is I think meant to represent any group some politicians/media use to blame for a country's problems. Til in front of the podium as a leader using a group as scapegoats.

    I really hope one day you go to one of their concert, if you're impressed by Till's presence on a video, you have no idea how it will crush you on live.
    Though, you know what it is about? the fear of... the other, the foreigner, the one not like you, that make you build walls, isolate yourself, close the borders till you put on the ignoble.
    See the progression of the video, familly guys, bbq, cosy, mowing their garden, then that guy in straitjacket, posing like a dictator (the wheel on the booth ressemble to the black sun symbol) and the same guys, saluting (don't you find that salute familiar?) and then isolating themselves? no more bbq, stuck on their computer and building walls between eachothers.... and the final, 2 refugees (my opinion, it looks like) a mom and her daughter, circled by barbedwire.... Aouch
    edit: Ah forgot... the red computer wires.... they are directly linked to the guy in straitjacket, flooding these familly guys with his propaganda.

    As many write here, "der schwarze Mann" is the boogyman in English. However, you have to think about the time when the album and this song were created. Rammstein have always exaggeratedly made fun of the abysses of society in their songs. I think here they let society, as it has been put through the media and politics, in fear and fright as content. Note the scenes in which the television and the monitor appear (as symbols for media). The Kabels that connects theyre heads to the computer. The monitor that stretches over the heads of the subjects sitting in front of them, or the television that has frightened the band members so much that they build walls between themselves and then shoot at the television. Like the last scene in which Til destroys the television with the lawn mower.

    My interpretation: The meaning of the "black man" should be translated as "the boogie man". The Evil who is using fear and the word tricks to manipulate his victim. Look, he is standing on rostrum platform, where are the microphones connected trough red cables to tv and computers. On that rostrum platform there is a symbol/mark - the wheel, the ship wheel, so it means that he has to be someone very important like a president, etc. As we saw he was in straitjacket before (which means that we deal with someone who act as kind of normal person but his hided plan, goals, intentions are insane as like people who are in mental hospital).
    Those people on the beginning, who cutting their lawn/grass - their lifestyle - single family house, huge grass, white fences, meat on grill, their clothes, etc - it reminds me American life style. Also, the children - the cheerleaders are also the symbol of America. And what they usually do? They are happy when their team is winning, and they always perform their show to distract you from the things in background, they keep entertained you to take your focus from the truth.
    America is the most powerful, most influential country on the world, then I think this is about how America government is manipulating everyone using words like wa.r, terr.orists, vi.ruses, etc, they're doing it trugh TVs and computers, to call the fear in you.
    As we see, on the beginning people were open and nice to each other (in old days, long time ago, people trust each other, they didn't lock their houses, they didn't have security video cameras, guns, etc) And now the boogie man continue to do a brain wash to everyone who is watching tv, so brain washed people started to have paranoia "needs" - needs to build the walls to close alone inside their houses. They start to pay for it. They want to pay for security cameras, security fence, but he boogie man continue his tricks, he gives allow to have/buy a gun so people have need to buy one and finally the people are against them self - in paranoia they kill each other.
    So the meaning of this song is the warning about media, tv, computer (articles in internet, games, movies, music) - that all of this are used to manipulate us. They give us easy entertained, to force us to put away on side our thinking. They want to sleep our rational logical thinking.
    Play again this videoclip and keep in mind, what just I've said.

    "Let me give my thoughts on this:
    1. The song is about how certain "leaders" and media want to scare people to control them. In the video, this is visualised by the red wires, computer screens an TV. Also, the entertainig industry is helping (commercials, online shopping), represented by the cheerleaders.
    2. The dominant colors in the viedeo are black, white and red, which are the colors of the flag of the Kaiserreich and the Third Reich. Also, you can say that the world the people in this video are living in, is just black and white, no grey. It can be understood as a reference to the simple minded people who are for example voting for politicians who are telling them exactly this black/white view (WE are good, THEY are bad). Also, the band is dressed up as the stereotype of this kind of conservative people. Did you noticed that the world in the video changed to color when Till destroyed the TV?
    3. "Der schwarze Mann" (The black man) is a german synonym for a creepy, ghost-like evil. As in the first verse of the song, children are often told "to obey, or else the black man will get you". It can be translated to boogey man in english, but like often, there is another meaning in this context. As said, the video is about leaders who are seedeing fear of anything foreign in peoples minds. So, the phrase "black man" can also be interpreted literally, namely refugees. In my opinion, it is a reference to the migration crisis in 2015 in Germany,. Or just remember the plans for a wall on the Mexican border...
    These are just the basics, everything else that is happening in the video is a result of this premisses. Greetings from Germany!"
    This is not mine.
