  • How to Spin Art Yarn
    This is a video answer to question posted in my Fiber Art Collective group on FB. In this video I show you how to spin art yarn from a batt made in the first video ( find part 1 here • How to Make Art Yarn: ... ) I demonstrate how to do an autoharp method of plying and offer a tone of tips for spinning art yarn. This is the second video of two on making a specific art yarn.
    The art yarn flyer for the Louet wheel can be found here: www.etsy.com/listing/21894729...

    Crazy. As I watch how you handle the "novelties" in your batt, it reminds me of how I spin my own "farm wool". I raise my own sheep, wash and process their fleeces myself, and end up with a fiber prep, um, that often has all the fun stuff, nibs, thick spots and the occasional VM. I have a Strauch Petite. So if I want a really smooth prep, it has to go through 3 times. But I tend to "work" the wool like you do. So even when I haven't carded in other fiber or textures, I tend to deal with the wool during the spin like you are demonstrating. Fun to watch!

    GREAT great video...I am so so new to spinning. I purchased my first wheel a few months ago. I am in my very early 60's and thought ( and sometimes still do) I am too old to start learning something like this...I love it and learned so much from you..I had wanted to learn how to spin fingering weight but art yarn is what I am doing really like it..so thank you..

    • @UrbanGypZ
      @UrbanGypZ  5 лет назад

      I usually do a simple hot but not too hot soak for about 20 minutes trying not to agitate too much. Spin excess water in the spin only cycle of my washing machine and hang to dry. If it twists, I will add a weight to the end to block the skein while drying. In a garment, I will only hand wash or dry clean.

  • @QuietSpinner
    @QuietSpinner 7 лет назад +1

    Love your idea of using your clipped warp ends as added texture!
    Btw, what is that cone yarn that you're using? Size, brand, etc..

    • @UrbanGypZ
      @UrbanGypZ  7 лет назад +1

      It is a random mill end. I live in NC and i can sometime find them in the thrift stores. Left overs from a once flourishing textile industry here. Any sewing thread will work. cones for embroidery machines will also work.

    • @UrbanGypZ

      For the most part I don’t if I wet finish and block the finished skein. Spin a little looser, let the auto wrap thread kind of hold the fibers in check.

      janice masson I usually let it sit on the spindle for a day or two. I will soak it in hot water for about 20 minutes to set the twist, spin out the water in my washing machine and weight it when I hang to dry.

    Hey!! Very new spinner here, super helpful video! I’m curious, does art yarn unravel if it’s not plied? I think you said you just gave this skein a “bath”, does that keep it from unraveling? Thanks!!

    • @UrbanGypZ
      @UrbanGypZ  Год назад

      Thank you for watching. If the single is not plied a warm or hot water soak will gel set the twist. I also let it rest on the bobbin at least 24 hours before I skein it up to soak.

      Jlee T I would suggest trying to get to a fiber festival near you. I know that sounds like a huge trip, but great if you love yarn as well. At a fiber festival you will get to try a bunch of tools for hand spinning. Some of them can get pricey so to actually be able to try a bunch of them and decide what a good starting price point for yourself based on how much you like what you try.
