I believe that's why the settlement money was so large
you guys are ridiculous with this whole using the word robbed... If you actually thought that they went into the NBA corporate building with a gun then you are just too dumb to entertain.
Similar reason why the Cowboys and Lions always play on Thanksgiving every year. Back when the NFL decided to start playing games on Thanksgiving, Detroit and Dallas were the only teams willing to do it. The NFL offered them the games in perpetuity in order to get them to go along. When TV money, tickets sales and national exposure weren't as great it was no big deal. Then as these became marque games over the years, the other teams tried legal means to break the deal, but were never successful. To appease the rest of the NFL, it is now why there's a 3rd game on Turkey Day with 2 random teams.

Actually they were a charter member of the ABA...Originally they were the Houston Mavericks, then in 1969 Jim Gardner bought the team, finished the year in Houston, then moved it to North Carolina where they became the Carolina Cougars from 1969-70 to the end of the 1973-74 season...in 1974 the Silna brothers and Don Schupak bought the franchise after being turned down for expansion and trying to buy the Detroit Pistons) and moved it to St. Louis (at that time, the largest city without a pro basketball team) from 1974-75 to 1975-76...the Silnas just wanted to own an NBA team...if they were still alive, that is what they would have wanted..however, the NBA did not want a team in St. Louis at that time

They didn't rob the NBA. They got screwed. The Spirits should have become an NBA team. Instead, they collected a little under a billion in earnings. An NBA team is worth billions. If they got their NBA team as they deserved, they would have made billions of dollars instead of hundreds of millions. -- Amazing video. Great watch. But your video title sucks hard nuts
By "robbed" we meant it was a "steal" of a deal. Of course they did not actually rob the NBA. Its more of a phrase. But we understand the confusion. Your completely right!
I can see what you're saying about them not getting an NBA team which would be worth billions, however on the other hand that fact also meant they also didn't have the tremendous expense and bother of owning a team all these years. All they had to do for the last 40 years was sit on their asses and collected a check that, even when it was "small," was quite a lot of money. I mean, $500k in 1980 went a LONG way back then.
@musicvidsetc - Yes, the money they got from contracts was probably a lot easier than having to manage a team. I 100% agree. And maybe they prefer that if they just wanted the money. But based on the video, it sounded like owning an NBA team was their dream. So instead of truly balling out in life and owning an NBA team, being famous and superrich, and passing that onto their kids, they just get to be rich and collect a check. They might not have gotten the better end of this deal if they really wanted to be a team owner.
Their goal was to own an NBA team. Since they owned an ABA team, they were use to the expense and bother. If they achieved their goal, they probably wouldn't have minded the expense and bother. This payday was a consolation prize.

The only thing comparable to this is the deal Desi Arnaz made with CBS for I Love Lucy. When that show was being developed, CBS loved the idea, but their budget was about $10,000 short of what they thought they needed. Arnaz offered to pay CBS the $10,000 himself - but only if he and Lucille Ball would own the copyrights on the show. Since reruns and syndication hadn't been invented, CBS was more than happy to take their money. After all, who would ever want to see the same show twice?
The version I described was the way Arnaz described it in an interview. The Wikipedia entry for "I Love Lucy" describes it differently. Read that article, under "Production", 3 or 4 paragraphs down.

NBA Insider No Problem! I mean everything I say too!

Jackie Moon would've been worth almost a billion had he done a deal like this back in the day:-):-):-)
One of our favourite movies 😂😂😂
Love these videos. Keep it up!
You got it!
That’s the smartest deal I ever heard of
Same for us!
i've been watching the NBA for years and never knew this story. I am now a subscriber. Great story!
Perhaps you are unaware of what the word 'robbed' means, but they did not ROB the NBA, they outsmarted and out-negotiated them.
Your right Jack. By "robbed" we meant it was a "steal" of a deal.
Of course they did not actually rob the NBA. Its more of a phrase.
But we understand the confusion. Your completely right!
Exactly! I would've done the same thing!
2:09...."Not to mention"

The timing of this deal was incredible. Shortly after it was signed Micheal Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson showed up and essentially interest in the NBA exploded. And with that new popularity came larger and larger TV contracts. And this continued for many many years afterward making the payoffs to Salina brothers larger and larger
Is that the amazing spider man as your intro ?
Nope. It is a "stranger Things" theme song remix.
Have you ever watched the TV show?
in scotland basketball... eeem not so much...BUT you make it feel so epic with your videos. Thats cool. thanks

Didn't know the Spirits were originally from Carolinas ( i'm from NC).
Pretty interesting stuff huh?
Louis at that time
Love the channel
Thank you so much!
I just realised why Detroit is called Pistons
Yup me too. I guess Detroit is motor city.
@You Tube gotta shoot your shot. you're welcome. 😂
Why is that?
Great video. That's what you call a good business man. Family is set for life.
Exactly right Ed!
not just life, many many generations.
Many for sure!
I love it... Get yah money
Yes sir
Wow. What superb video on something I never knew (i dont know much about nba finances despite watching the nba for decades). Incredible really how a perpetuity is signed like that...
Lol I get the chills during the intro

its not robbery its call finessing
You're completely right. We apologize. By "robbed" we meant it was a "steal" of a deal.

robbed? NO son. Outsmarted.

If thats the case you were correct Dalton. Great stuff 🙌!
😂😂😂
They didn't ROB them, the NBA just made a TERRIBLE deal because they didn't accurately predict the future of media

Great vid, but six adds on 12min vid? I skipped most of them. As a regular yt viewer and fan of the channels, i will let the adds play for maximum channel revenue but one add every 2 mins is too much IMO.
The Spirits practiced after my games in the same gym. Also Bob Costas was there play by play guy, this first anouncing gig.
Wow, really? Great stuff Lance!
Bad title they didn't Rob shit they r just smart business men that had a good lawyer
By "robbed" we meant it was a "steal" of a deal.
Of course they did not actually rob the NBA. Its more of a phrase.
But we understand the confusion Daniel. Your completely right!
@NBAINSIDER , where could I find that Intro last segment Music Section you use in the video?
Thank you
They didn't rob the NBA.
Thanks @Insider. Think I might be watching a lot more videos
The deal The Silna Brothers made in 2014 with Adam Silver should have been… “We want The Spirits of St. Louis to finally join The NBA.”
That rising sun flag on the thumbnail... stop using that plz
I feel this more than I should, but that's real
We actually designed the thumbnail background ourselves with no intent to copy the rising sun flag.
We were just going for a 1970's theme feel. So we apologize if we offended you. Respectfully of course!

wow great video!!!
Thank You!
Wow probably the greatest deal in the history of sports! These guys were genius
Right?!
Is that Larry Brown on the left @ 2:24?
Possibly. We are not too sure!
Wow. This is some really interesting stuff. Would you mind sharing some more?
The version I described was the way Arnaz described it in an interview. The Wikipedia entry for "I Love Lucy" describes it differently. Read that article, under "Production", 3 or 4 paragraphs down.
Wow, there is literally a commercial every minute and a half or so. That is ridiculous.
I liked this vid👍🔥

The fact that you found this obscure and surprising, but very important piece of history and told it in a compelling, interesting way. Once I started watching, I wanted to hear more about the ABA (yes, I am old enough to remember them) and had to keep watching until the end to find out how this all shook out. Good on you guys, and thanks for the SO!

I would love to see some of these games. I never got to watch them back then. Only listened to them on the radio
That would be pretty awesome to do Jon!
When I heard him say the line"they sold 600 out of 10,000 ticket seats"I had to comment again....cos that just cements the fact tht these 2 dudes robbed the nba
They really did. What do you think? Was this the best NBA deal ever?
Definitely...its already popularly considered the greatest sports deal ever...im still surprised the nba took soo much time to get out of the deal.
Completely agreed!
Is this your first time hearing about the Silna Brothers?
@@NBAInsider I read about them a few years back in a news article in a paper when one of the brothers had expired & the very same article mentioned their deal they made with the NBA but with not as much details & info as uv'e mentioned in ur video.Honestly I didn't think it was that big of a monetary deal for them till I saw your video,u get a proper realisation of how lucrative this deal was for them from what u detailed about their history.
Interesting. And did you enjoy the video?
great vid
Thank you Kristjan!
I need to know the intro song , it is fuccing amazing
It is the "Stranger Things" theme song remix.
Have you ever watched the TV show?
To me it looks like two men who saw the value of the product on thier hands and with one eye on the future and the other on present circumstances negotiated accordingly.
I hope they sent their lawyer a cigar and thank you note every month cuz he did his job to T.
Their lawyer actually got a piece of the earnings. But your completely right!
