The Texans are going to have to run into some seriously bad luck to be a one year wonder.

Honorable mention to the 2018 Bears, the year prior they went 5-11, the year after they went 8-8, but in 2018 I swear I thought they had finally found their QB and the Packers were declining even WITH Rodgers! the Packers would go 6-9-1 that year with the Bears going 12-4 in 2018.
Then Trubisky showed that much like Most bears seasons, it was a flash in the pan.
Another honorable mention should go to the 1989 Green Bay Packers, just before Favre-Rodgers-Love there was Don Majik Man Majkowski, who led that year's Packers team to a 10-6 season, the Packers 1st 10 win season since 1972 (17 years!), but unfortunately due to tiebreakers still missed the playoffs. they also earned the nickname the Cardiac Pack/Heart Attack Pack depending on who you asked, because they broke a then NFL record for most games decided by just 1 point, Packers won 4 games with that score difference. The year prior they were 4-12, and after 1989 they went back to losing with a 6-10 record in 1990.

The Saints went marching in following Hurricane Katrina with the arrival of QB Drew Brees and HC Sean Payton. The Falcons 1999 decline was led by the loss of Jamal Anderson early in the season after being the leading rusher the prior year. Also the 2003 Falcons lost Michael Vick for much of the season. The Texans should stay good if CJ Stroud stays healthy.

  • @tylerturnage

The list follows the criteria outlined in the video, but nearly half of the teams on this list had good seasons 2 years after the "wonder" season, and the Saints won the SB 3 years after theirs. I wouldn't consider those teams 1 hit wonders. The 2004 Falcons made the NFC championship, the 1983 49ers made the NFC championship (and won 1984 SB), the 2008 Ravens made the AFC championship, the 2021 49ers made the NFC championship.

This is a great point. I would increase the span of seasons within which each team sits, to five seasons, two before and two after.
Do that, and my top 10 would be (all other criteria the same):
1.2010 Kansas City Chiefs (10-6, 1st in AFC West) - lost to Ravens in Wild Card Playoffs 30-7; 15-49 record over 2008-2009 and 2011-2012
2.1998 Atlanta Falcons (14-2, 1st in NFC West) - lost to Broncos in Super Bowl 34-19; 19-45 record over 1996-1997 and 1999-2000
3.1998 Arizona Cardinals (9-7, 2nd in NFC East) - lost to Vikings in Divisional Playoffs 41-21; 20-44 record over 1996-1997 and 1999-2000
4.2012 Washington Redskins (10-6, 1st in NFC East) - lost to Seahawks in Wild Card Playoffs 24-14; 18-46 record over 2010-2011 and 2013-2014
5.2017 Jacksonville Jaguars (10-6, 1st in AFC South) - lost to Patriots in AFC Championship Game 24-20; 19-45 record over 2015-2016 and 2018-2019
6.2016 Oakland Raiders (12-4, 2nd in AFC West) - lost to Texans in Wild Card Playoffs 27-14; 20-44 record over 2014-2015 and 2017-2018
7.2011 Detroit Lions (10-6, 2nd in NFC North) - lost to Saints in Wild Card Playoffs 45-28; 19-45 record over 2009-2010 and 2012-2013
8.1991 Atlanta Falcons (10-6, 2nd in NFC West) - lost to Redskins in Divisional Playoffs 24-7; 20-44 record over 1989-1990 and 1992-1993
9.2001 Chicago Bears (13-3, 1st in NFC Central) - lost to Eagles in Divisional Playoffs 33-19; 22-42 record over 1999-2000 and 2002-2003
10.1981 New York Giants (9-7, 3rd in NFC East) - lost to 49ers in Divisional Playoffs 38-24; 17-39-1 record over 1979-1980 and 1982-1983

The 1991 Lions stand out in my mind for this list...this season was bookended by 6-10 and 5-11 seasons. It was their first winning season since 1983. How does this team not make a list like this? Also, the '81 Niners is a someone odd inclusion into this list. How does this analysis account for '82 being strike-shortened?

1972 Dolphins. All other things the same, if either the Vikings in week 3 (16-14 score) or the Bills in week 6 (24-23 score) make an extra field goal against them, they don't have an undefeated regular season, and they're less in the discussion among the average fan for greatest team of all-time than the 1976 Raiders. They played an astoundingly easy regular season schedule, with only 2 opponents which finished the regular season above .500 (the 8-6 Chiefs and Vikings), and no opponents which qualified for the playoffs. Nine of their regular season opponents won fewer than 5 regular season games. Of their +15.3 ppg regular season average scoring margin, +3.7 of that is from one 52-0 win in week 9 over the 1972 Patriots, one of the worst teams of all-time (bottom 20). In the Divisional Playoffs, they beat a barely-above-average Browns team 20-14. In the AFC Championship Game, they beat a great Steelers team 21-17, but trailed 10-7 in the 3rd quarter, before getting out to a 21-10 4th quarter lead. In the Super Bowl, they beat a great Redskins team 14-7, but needed to stop a Redskins drive in the final 1:14 of the 4th quarter to prevent a potential game-tying score, which may have led the game into overtime. The 1972 Dolphins team was a great team, but not close to the greatest of all-time. The 1973 Dolphins, which lost 2 regular season games and also won a Super Bowl, were better.

In February 2024, ESPN published a ranking of all 58 winners through the 2023 season. Based on their list, which is probably somewhat representative of a general consensus, my top 10 most-overrated Super Bowl winners would be:
1.1999 St. Louis Rams (13-3, 3-0 in playoffs)
      2T.1972 Miami Dolphins (14-0, 3-0 in playoffs)
      2T.1995 Dallas Cowboys (12-4, 3-0 in playoffs)
4.2022 Kansas City Chiefs (14-3, 3-0 in playoffs)
5.2021 Los Angeles Rams (12-5, 4-0 in playoffs)

      7.1971 Dallas Cowboys (11-3, 3-0 in playoffs)
      8T.1974 Pittsburgh Steelers (10-3-1, 3-0 in playoffs)
      8T.1975 Pittsburgh Steelers (12-2, 3-0 in playoffs)
10T.1966 Green Bay Packers (12-2, 2-0 in playoffs)
      10T.1988 San Francisco 49ers (10-6, 3-0 in playoffs)
There isn't a team among these that isn't a great team. This is only about where the 58 winners may be ranked among each other, by general consensus.
