The sound of a pump or level action just sends the message of: wrong house motherf*cker!
There's a certain robustness to things with exposed moving parts. The pistons on a locomotive, the air scoop on a muscle car, the cylinder of a revolver; all of these say "This stops working if we break so we don't plan to". On the other hand, modernity has lead a lot of people to equate "protection" with "fragility" when it comes to covers and shrouds. They aren't wrong in plenty of cases, although just as many are to protect people from the part rather than the reverse. Still, in our world of clean plastic cases and flush metal plating something that sticks out, sticks out all the more.

I've always felt that pump, lever, or semi-auto shotguns were more efficient, but there is just something so awesome about a breakdown shotgun, especially with two barrels. Even then, over-under is probably more accurate, but side-by-side barrels just cut such a striking and sexy figure.

Another thing about double barrel shotguns that's often overlooked is that it makes for a good part of weapon progression. For example, a lot of FPS games will have double barrel shotguns as lower-tier shotguns with pump-action, semi-auto, and full-auto shotguns coming after, like in Fallout New Vegas, where you start out with a caravan shotgun or a single-shotgun (depending if you have the caravan weapons pack), but eventually work up to the powerhouse that is the riot shotgun.

It is pretty much 2 shotguns in 1 package. You have another barrel ready if the first fails. You can also load 2 different loads and immediately choose the one that best suits the situation.
It also allows an immediate follow-up shot, should one be needed.

"Groovy"
I wonder how many gamers have actually used a double barreled shotgun before. shooting both barrels at the same time is not anything a sane person would do. the sheer recoil from just one barrel is already uncomfortable... I have seen people knocked on their assess by double barrel blasting... double barrel blasting is only for when you have something like an angry bear after you kind of a situation. 1 barrel at a time is more than enough to kill the crap out of most living things.
Interesting,thank you for the fact.
Personally I kind of wonder how many gamers actually know flamethrowers in real life aren't as glamorous and cool when they're using them in a fight or even spraying someone with them. I frankly find it disturbing when I come across situations in games where the character you play says, "This thing is awesome! I love the flamethrower." Mean while in real life I think a lot of veterans would say, "It's arguably the most dangerous devise I have ever used. I have nothing but awful memories from using this in war. I became vegetarian after smelling so much burning human flesh each time I used it. It haunted me so much I can't eat any meat or cook without having traumatic flash backs of horrible screaming and sizzling noises." Sure it's fun to shoot a flame thrower in a game or in real life if you go through the legal procedures to allow yourself but usually any kind of incendiary devises tend to cause a lot of psychological damages to the receiving side and the one using it. I really do feel like the gaming industry needs to quit implying the weapon is like a super cool car. It's just down right wrong and misleading. I am still ok with it being used in games though haha. Have a nice day.

The barrel has been doubled!
1:55 my eyes were unfocused and I saw 3 barrels.
honestly one of my favorite double barrel shotguns is in one million fatal guns, cuz of the reload exploit. if you fire both barrels then reload, and while the animation is playing switch to another double barrel shotgun, you basically have no pauses between shots at all
No BioShock 2? it had a revolver type double barrel shotgun :D
My copy of Bioshock 2 is AWOL. I think someone borrowed it.
Time for some double barrel justice (O|O)
Ahoy oh hey how's it going? Do you like pizza?
0:05 you could say the same for the bow & arrow
