      I’ll tell you this from my experience we took a double barrel shotgun and cut it down to about 10 inches and me as a brainiac I put 2 3inch mags in it and when I pulled both triggers let’s just say that was a bad idea Because I ended up with three or four screws in my wrist, and I had to have a long rod on the outside of my arm that had to be tightened down At least 3×4 times a month that sucked so hopefully nobody gets any dumb ideas on here to try this. That’s not a good idea. Single shots fine double barrel bad idea.

    Sawed offs became popular because they were easier to conceal. If you were going to be in an area where you needed a lot of firepower, you would be in close enough range for the sawed off barrel to be effective.

      Also the ones seen in the video are double barrel, and I’m not a gun expert but I think a lot of double barrels can fire both rounds either at the same time or in quick succession, essentially doubling the power.

      A Ket-tec KSG is /absolutely the wrong shotgun for sporting clays/. 18.1" barrel, no built in choke capacity. But that's what I had. Put an EOtech on it because, holographically, that reticle was 25 yards out in space on the end of a virtual barrel. And I had to shoot fast, because the shot spread /fast/. But all the mass was between my support hand and my shoulder, so it swung fast. I thought I would need a lot of practice, but after the second round, I was pulling 24/25 out of the air consistently. The rules don't mention optics, because what idiot puts an optic on a sporting clays shotgun, but I tell you what: EOtechs are straight up cheating.

    I think the point of the sawed-off shotgun in movies is to be more powerful than a handgun while still being compact. Which it sure would be. Also, shortening the weapon makes it easier to conceal and carry. Think Kyle Reece in the Terminator. Also, in close quarters combat, a shorter weapon would be easier to handle, move around and aim. Still, people wouldn't fly back like they do in the movies. Mythbusters did an entire episode on this.

    • @Bushlore1
      @Bushlore1 11 месяцев назад +20

      I never understood how anyone would think a bullet can make a person fly back. The mass of a pencil tip hitting the mass of a human. If it is moving fast enough to produce the energy it is going to go straight through. Now a 2000 grain round hitting a plate carrier at 2000+ fps might take you for a ride lol.

    • @markmathisen3908
      @markmathisen3908 11 месяцев назад +12

      Exactly. If the round hitting someone had enough force to propel someone through the air, physics would dictate the same force equal to the person firing the gun. If the bullet makes the target fly, the shooter would fly with equal force upon discharge.

    • @DarkJak2050
      @DarkJak2050 11 месяцев назад +8

      Mythbusters also showed clips from older movies, particularly Black & White movies you'll see guys who got shot dead just literally drop dead where they stood. They weren't sent flying backwards by 10 feet.
      They even brought up Newton's 3rd Law of Physics. _For every action (force) in nature, there's an equal and opposite reaction._
      In other words; when the person getting shot gets sent flying from the force of a gunshot, so will the shooter.

    • @gordowg1wg145
      @gordowg1wg145 11 месяцев назад +2

      Exactly - it's the same principle with "rail guns" that so many SF writers seem to be hung up on - the energy released when the projectile hits has to be applied to the projectile when it's fired and, not only doesn that mean a huge power source, but the conservation of momentum/Newton's Third Law of Motion means the recoil also has to balance the energy release.
      Same thing with the BS about military orbitally launched impactors - while they can provide a lot of energy in a small area, they need to be given at least as much energy during the launch and, in practice, the true balance will be closer to 100 times (depending on lifter efficiencies) as much energy used to lift them into orbit as will be released in a ground strike.
      Now, if one were to redirect something like an asteroid it will have a much longer fall into Earth's gravity well, and so apply a LOT more damage for a relatively small energy transfer to steer the body in the required direction.

It gets the job done and it's very compact.

A short barrel contact shot might blow apart a target more with the blast of gases despite a lower projectile velocity.

    At 11:01 it is possible to see that the 9th pellet missed just beside the zombie's left arm, playing at 0,25x speed helps to see it. This is normal with buckshot that has 9 pellets in it. Reason is that the first two pellets in the shell are a pair and the 3rd & 4th pellet form a similar pair but at a 90 degree different rotation and this symmetrical pattern continues until the 8th pellet... put a ninth one and it breaks the pattern. That makes the 9th pellet to shoot off from the main group.

    Hey Scott, great content as always! From what I've been reading lately it seems as though much like a rifle, with shotguns barrel length has almost nothing to do with spread and is almost entirely controlled by the choke, barrel length only adds velocity and balance for swing through when hunting or shooting clays. In theory the sawed off should have more 'knock back power' due to the larger impact area as you mentioned, as long as its energy was high enough from the lower velocity, it would have been cool to see if that effect was intensified with something like #8 birdshot to evenly spread the impact energy even more. Could be a fun video idea to rig something to test knock back power over penetration and maybe even include some different chokes for 12g? This could also be a fun comparison for the elephant guns. Keep up the amazing videos!

    When using the Shotgun, the pellets don't spread vertically, just horizontally, and each shell only fires 7 pellets, so you can snipe a bit with that.

    A shorter barrel makes it easier to move around in tight/close spaces(such as your home) while a longer barrel would be more difficult
    The spread in close quarters while still being accurate enough for all the pellets to hit they would spread out just enough to hit more of whatever your shooting at(theoretically)

    I never thought about shotgun barrel length until I shot my Judge 410 revolver with a 2 inch barrel into a dirt bank. The pattern was about 15 feet wide at 20 feet away. It surprised me he had as many pellets as he did.
    Funny thing about the cold. 2 weeks ago it was 25 below zero at my house for several days. Then it warmed up to 20 above and I went and worked outside feeling "warm" enough to work without gloves.

      Your Judge also has a .45 caliber rifled barrel. The rifling is probably spinning the shot cup and therefore the shot. So, the centrifugal force is making the shot spread even more than it would naturally.

      @stefanl5183 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@tt600pch I would say it certainly does. All pistols have shorter barrels, but they still have rifling. Also there are rifled choke tubes that are made for shooting slugs, and choke tubes are really short. Anyway, Paul Harrel has done videos where he tested rifled choke tubes and found they did in fact make a difference with sabot slugs. So, yeah, it should make a difference. You gotta remember the shot cup is moving pretty fast as it travels down that barrel. That's gonna make the spin the rifling imparts on it pretty fast. For shot loads that spins spreads the pattern. For slugs it tightens it, but it requires more spin to stabilize a slug than it does to spread because there are different forces at work. It's centrifugal force that spreads shot whereas it's a physics phenomenon called precession that stabilizes bullets. Anyway, if you watched this video, even though he did get some additional spread from the shorter barrels, he certainly didn't get the amount you did. The rifling in your barrel made a difference.

      The only question I have is: Can you get it with a bayonet lug? With a foot long blade on that thing you can stab the guy hiding in the next house if you run out of ammo!

      @@andersjjensenevery gun should be capable of mounting a bayonet, Idgaf if it's a damn revolver, all guns must be bayonet compatible.. this should be enforced by the atf

      @@achaean7615 I love the idea of a 6" barrelled 357 revolver with a 12" double edged bayonet on it. Both in mirror shine chrome with a tasteful amount of gold inlay engraving.
      That's a weapon you should, by law, only be allowed to discharge (or charge with) wearing a top hat and a monocle.

    Sawn off might get you more wounding at short ranges as your spread will be larger (which might make it more likely that your target doesn't get back up, but then so would a properly aimed shot from a full length shotgun), but it's never going to be "more powerful" because less of the energy in the shell is being constrained by the barrel and using to accelerate the pellets.

  • @life_with_bernie
    @life_with_bernie 11 месяцев назад +4

    With a 34" barrel on the Super Goose it's a yard closer to the target than the other guns. You should have added a yard to the distance it shot from, just to make up for that extra-length barrel.

  • @AkiraRyoji

    I always thought the shirter the barrel, the wider the spread so im not too surprised. Sawed offs have a badass feel and look to them but i think a lot of that was also thanks to action flicks and video games. Still, this was an awesome video and I absolutely loved the Supergoose shot at the end.

    Love the content Scott and thanks for braving the cold. I live in SD so cold is relative but I understand your pain and discomfort. ;-)
    I've never heard or thought it was implied /led to believe that they were more "powerful" than a standard long barreled shotgun. They are depicted as more concealable and easily carried, and more easily wielded effectively in close quarters, without sacrificing too much lethality, again in close quarters. These are "pop into a doorway and blast everything in the room with both barrels" gun, not a "20 yard one barrel at a time" gun.

      Exactly this. Unforgiven taught us the same lesson--sawed offs don't need to be aimed.

    I think the sawed off is the way to go in a house/close quarters. They do similar damage but imagine trying to swing a 3ft gun around in a hall not so great but a lil 1 ft sawed off would be more suitable. Everything is situational, Great video!

    The myth about the power comes from the old western movies, where some guys switched out their 6 shooter with a sawnoff and mowed the opponent away in duels.

    • @logangodofcandy
      @logangodofcandy 11 месяцев назад +2

      Well, it isn't a myth that a sawed off 12 gauge is far more powerful than a 45 colt pistol.

    • @TobiasRieperGER
      @TobiasRieperGER 11 месяцев назад +2

      @@logangodofcandy That isn't the reason... The old western colts aren't that precisely like modern ones. There are videos on YT. The Peacemaker with it's long barrel is as precisely as a modern stubby nose. There were many tolerances in production at that times... So shooting a shotgun with many small balls in it could have advantages. That is the reason he took 20 steps, then 10 steps than as close as possible... To show, that less distance is better, or use a longer barrel.
