Thank you to everybody who has supported the creation of these video and has shared this journey with my sailboat Karl with me so far. It would not have been the same without you.
This episode was filmed in 10 / 2020.
    -
Welcome to Untie The Lines! my name is Nike, I bought an aluminum 37 foot sailboat in Panama in 2013 that I named KARL. I spent a good year refitting it, mostly by myself and with the help of awesome friends, and then (mostly) solo sailed my sailboat around the western Caribbean.
In 2016, I crossed the Panama Canal, had a major engine break down, a near sinking experience and a serious foot injury which got me stuck along the Pacific coast of Central and South America.
In this Episode, Paul, Luca and I go on a Little dinghi excursion to a beautiful small island close to our anchorage Espiritu Santo (Panama). We snorkel but unfortunately we find find nothing to eat underwater.
Back on board, I tackle a boat repair project, building a new hatch cover for my aft cabin. Since it’s rainy season, I have to take a bottle break from my outside project and decide to build a cute woven shelf basket from recycled ocean plastic. Check out @inmoceanorg or www.in-mocean.org for more about our recycling ocean trash project.
    Enjoy and Ahoy,
    Nike & Karl

I put a new deck and boat carpet on my 23 foot Larson cabin cruiser.. with the help of my neighbor we had the boat ready for the water on the 4th of july this past summer.. You are absolutely right there is a lot of joy in getting little projects done, its instant gratification, and even getting the bigger ones done is always a cause for celebration. I'm a wood worker from way back and i love doing projects like that. You and Paul tackled that with minimal tools and knocked it out of the park. Paul was right, the attention to detail keeps from getting a splinter where you don't want a splinter.. AHHH the precision of the Swiss coupled with the engineering of the Germans.. I can't wait to see what project you tackle next..

    • @WhiteSpotPirates

😂 sounds like you have quite the project going there yourself!
Surely not a bad mix of skills between the Germans and Swiss 😜

@@WhiteSpotPirates Ah but I had all the tools, a lot of room to do layouts and fitting and the help of a great neighbor. I wish i had taken some before and after pictures. Maybe i'll do that for the fold down lounge rebuild and the new engine hatch cover.. But more about that....in the spring :-)

Some of the beginning was really exceptional...the aerial work over these stony isles, but especially the underwater sound of the stones rolling in the surf! I think back to the first Karl crossing and how far things have come...and all the great people along the way...so yes, an exceptional channel.

That was a very pretty hand woven basket. Very cool. As to rotting timber, the same thing happ-ens to houses, only on a house you can ignore it longer. I was cutting some wood the other day on deck as you were and my boat neighbor said why don’t you do that up on the push pit railing? He advantages to be a better wok height and the saw dust goes overboard directly (possibly the tools too). He had a good point so I have been musing over some bracket designs to hold a work board onto the railing and to double as a fish filleting location also.

With many Swiss and German friends and colleagues over the years, it brought a huge smile to hear the Germans 'complain' about Swiss precision while working on a piece of plywood found on the beach, west of Panama - lovely moment that's well captured - all cred to retired cabinetmaker sunline24!!!!

    ATTENTION!
This was shown to me on someone else's boat today, mainly because they saw me Freediving off of mine in the same anchorage. I offer a safety warning and advice in this comment.
You should never have your snorkel in your mouth when you hunt fish on a breath hold. Even on a shallow dive!
Please do not do it again.
An underwater blackout is survivable, especially with your friend in the dinghy or water with you, but a blackout with your snorkel in your mouth in NOT survivable. It provides a passage and opens your lungs to immediate flooding.
Underwater blackouts and shallow water blackouts can happen anytime to anyone; especially to the untrained.

@@WhiteSpotPirates I found an old time wood treatment from the dory builders on the Oregon coast. It's linseed oil (boiled linseed oil). I use it on the wood work on boats and a lot of exterior projects. Linseed oil is fairly cheap and non-toxic. I mix it with paint thinner or something similar at 2 parts oil to 1 part thinner. Thinning it makes for better penetration and faster drying. It's quite simple to apply with a rag or brush or ....., let it sit for a bit and then wipe off extra before it dries. I try to use 2 to 4 coats or as many as will absorb into the wood. Another great part of this is it's simple to recoat, just rinse or wipe off visible buildup and then recoat. You'll love the way it repels water and makes the wood last. Nice job on the carpentry!

Just a comment about your claim about Germans and Swiss. I started working with Germans in 1990. The company I worked for then, has a design and manufacturing facility in Celle. I have been there many times. I have many friends there. Celle was my home away from home. Only a few of my German friends are overly compulsive about details.
I recognized by the way you talk that you are from somewhere not to far away from Celle. That is why I watch your channel. That, and I guess I just like German girls. My wife is 1/4 German.
I have watched you when you are happy and when you have been discouraged. I am always glad to see the episodes wherein you smile a lot. Let’s me know you are OK. Stay safe, healthy, and above all happy.
    Best of luck to you!

WhiteSpotPirates I don’t know what it is that makes speech from that area so distinctive. I watch two other German channels, but have no idea where they are from.
You are the most special though. Watching you go through the trials you have endured and the way you bounce back is an inspiration.
We have never met, but I hope I can count you among my German friends.

When a German starts talking about someone being annoyingly perfectionistic, you just KNOW she is talking about the Swiss :) But how they managed to still speak English with eachother, I just don't know.

another excellent video showing a snippet of your life. wow. Today I felt like you should be able to see us somehow. like some giant ZOOM call. There is something very real to what you are doing and how you share it. I will share something with you today. I am reading the four volume memoirs of Napoleon written by Bourrienne ( secretary to Napoleon) US version 1891. Might be worthy on those extra hours onship when there is nothing left to do but think....? Of course you may enjoy KOSMOS by Alexander von Humboldt ...in german no less... thanks g

    • @WhiteSpotPirates
      @WhiteSpotPirates  3 года назад

I do have the Kosmos book actually ☺️ and here’s a very funny coincidence...whilst I was making the basket, I was listening to “die Vermessung der Welt” about Humboldt’s Crazy Adventures to measure the world. It’s a great book and I had to laugh out loud a couple of times. Maybe four volumes about Napoleon would be a tad bit much for my taste, but always depends on how it’s written, too. Thanks for the recommendation, though.
I am very happy to hear your feedback about the videos. Since I only took editing over recently, it’s great to hear that the vibe they transport are a good one 👍.

After living in Canada for some thirty years he did relax a bit and when we saw a German being a German I would say to him " Ya, guten Deutschen gründlichkeit und qualität Ya Da siest " and we would both laugh ..... I rarely use my German and was hoping my spelling would not be too atrocious, I use google chrome and it spell checked my German as well as my English, impressed I am .... people pay big money to have stuff made out of old would with bits of old paint and makings on it .. what are you going to do, or I guess what did you do with it, clear coat it? .. looks fantastic ..... as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans .....
