Great video Nike.. The last week I was looking for the translation for what we call in Spanish "Orejas de Burro", for the subtitles of my video "Solo sailing for Dummies" and it takes me a while to find it. And it is Wing on Wing!!! (I don´t know if you already know the name in Spanish) The answer is always on your Channel. This is the first RUclips channel about sailing I followed years ago, and I'm so glad you are still making so good videos and living your life to the fullest. Best regards.
Oh that’s a funny term, no, did not know that, thanks a lot for sharing. My Spanish sailing vocabulary is actually quite poor I believe 🙈 solo sailing for Dummies sounds interesting, might have to check that out! 😜
Great seawomanship on this passage! - route planning; weather, breeze and current awareness; careful conservative pilotage in poorly charted areas; planning your anchorage and checking your set. The complete package. Do you sometimes think about your old less confident self when you started off several years ago? I trust you're very proud of your present self!
😂 no, I would not say that I am proud of myself. I still have a bunch of anxiety about certain things and still a ton to learn. I do feel more confident about certain things for sure, but also some things are still scary to me (like big squall lines coming my way or water spouts). I am very happy that day sails like this one are now more of a pleasure, that for sure ☺️
Indeed, the complete package, incl the hook up to the safety line. As a solo sailor never take chances, even at such a day with only a light breeze. Very much appreciated. Unlike another solo sailor in the north Atlantic, who I also truly admire, but who IMHO takes unnecessary risks.
Ah ha, now I know why you make these regular videos. By making them in 2 languages, you get to celebrate with an anchor beer AND ein anker bier for each journey! More seriously though, great to see you having fun instead of working so much. But also, much to take in and wonder about. Every time I see you moving around in that cockpit without having to step up and, perhaps out of the cockpit, it makes me envious; I have a problem with an "unhelpful" foot too and it sure is a pest. With everything so heavy aboard my HR-38 (wire main halyard, 12mm & 14mm running rigging) and so much work at the mast, I tend to rig things conservatively as you seem to (always reef to start a leg and at night… use as little sail as I can get away with, not as much as I can...) to reduce the likelihood of having to leave the cockpit. I suppose all this comes from rarely having winds below 25kt and I single-hand too. I also worry about Karl’s boom, with that 4:1 system and no traveller - but maybe his rig is lighter than the one I work with. But I’m about to start my 30-day leg west, alone and in much lighter conditions than I’m used to. With all the lockdowns I’ve put up with over more than a year, I just don’t get out to experiment with things, such as the limitations of my HydroVane, using my spinnaker pole on my genoa downwind, with that heavy pole and those extra lines so I practice sail “in my head” a lot. Something you said - "Wing-on-wing is not really autopilot course”, had me thinking. I haven’t used that as I’m been just too scared about the risk of the boom trying to go wild if things get gusty in the winds I’ve sailed (HR-38 is a very round-bilge boat that can roll like hell) and I’ve always steered no lower than 150-155deg to keep things steady (I use a preventer running all the way from the bow deck cleats, not the midship ones too). Also found with squalls that same tendency to round up that you describe (can overpower the autopilot too) but I’ve put that down to sheeting the main in too far and trimming it not flat enough when reefed. Pity is I can’t go out and experiment (when I next leave marina here at Portugal, it must be to leave the country) So you found you can’t sail well downwind on autopilot? What about your wind pilot? Is that only with very light winds - a concern for me as I’ll have lots of that until near the Canaries. Also your “wing-on-wing” - how deep downwind do you sail that way - and you don’t pole out the headsail… So much to wonder about.
Oh, such a beautiful area up there. I once joined a triathlon through Stockholm city, such a beautiful country you live in (except for the vicious mosquitos 😂)
@@WhiteSpotPirates Thanks for reminding me of the beauty of Sweden. Not even the mosquitos can take that away. (there are really good repellants nowdays too) :-)

If you put a bowsprit on your boat, you'd lose some of that "weather helm" you were talking about (where the boat wants to sail up into the wind - which is actually a safety measure). Our boat had that problem which was particularly tiring on windy days. We ended up adding a bowsprit and moving the jib/or genoa a few feet forward and it made an enormous difference. By removing most of the weather helm the boat was much easier and more fun to sail as a result.
I actually already have a small bowsprit 😂🙈 I think it’s the not pre balanced rudder blade that makes it so annoying 🙄 not sure why they made it like that...

Nice to see you sailing again. Is it possible to put another block for the main sheet on the starboard also? May make trimming the sail easier. Not sure of your reefing set up but be careful if your reefing halyard slips or comes loose it may rip your sail as the tie down reefing lines on the sail go around your boom which means those little eyelets have to carry the weight of the boom. Use the tie downs just to gather up the sail without them going round the boom? Sorry not a very good explanation.
Yes u can have a second sheet, but that was a lot of lines always running through my cockpit so got rid of one set 😂🙈 planning to build a small dynema traveler above the tiller at some point. My old sail was not lose footed so I had no chance to wrap the reef lines just around the sail...but my new mainsail deform precision sails is lose footed and I will be able to do it as u mentioned 👍
I'm surprised cruisers don't go for short morning or afternoon sails like that all the time. By staying put at anchor until they leave for the next "passage", cruisers are missing out on the fun they could be having simply sailing their boats just for the sake of sailing. They don't know what they are missing out on. It is the best kind of sailing there is.
It is so refreshing and really boosts up one’s energy. But I have to say that I often also fall into the “staying put in one spot” and just working through some stuff on the boat or enjoying my surrounding. It’s funny how that happens although we know how beautiful it is to be under way. I love those day sails since they are uncomplicated and arriving in a new spot is so beautiful and exciting. Let’s do this more often!!!
