Thank you to everybody who has supported the creation of these video and has shared this journey with my sailboat Karl with me so far. It would not have been the same without you.
This episode was filmed in 10 / 2020.
    -
Welcome to Untie The Lines! my name is Nike, I bought an aluminum 37 foot sailboat in Panama in 2013 that I named KARL. I spent a good year refitting it, mostly by myself and with the help of awesome friends, and then (mostly) solo sailed my sailboat around the western Caribbean.
In 2016, I crossed the Panama Canal, had a major engine break down, a near sinking experience and a serious foot injury which got me stuck along the Pacific coast of Central and South America.
In this Episode, Maria and I go on a hunt to chase some crocodiles in the mangroves. Also, it’s Time for some TLC on my windpilot Pacific windvane that is long overdue. It was quite the battle to take that lady apart.
    Enjoy and Ahoy,
    Nike & Karl

At least yours is in better condition than my 40 year old Hydrovane from a scrap yard was! 😋 For Hydrovane they recommend not using any lubricant during maintenance, even WD40 will form a grease layer over time, trapping dirt and causing corrosion and wear. It's better just to clean with anti-corrosive cleaner. I make my own with water, dish soap and baking soda.

That was the word for my old aries too.... manufacturer recommendations were just add water lol. Now mine has taken up a half of a cockpit thwart for way to long after being told by the only dude on the planet who has parts for aries that he couldn't care less to help me. Apparently the elitist racer dudes are following the aries revival in their pursuit to outbest sir Robin's record....

I've seen you talk about plastics in your past videos and this one also, but when I saw the crocodile I remembered a documentary about a croc in the Palu river in Indonesia, with a tire around its neck. Several have attempted to capture and free it, including the popular biologist Forrest Galante, but the COVID epidemic prevented him from finishing the mission. I hate seeing the effects of plastics on the biosphere but it should be in our conscience. Crocodiles are predators but they serve a purpose and shouldn't be stricken with waste. Great video!

I know you are a fan of WD-40, but if you ever see CorrisionX in your travels you may want to give it a try, and watch corrosion melt away in seconds. Corrision X especially the HD is commonly used on aircraft is is excellent for aluminum. I use it as my primary penetrating oil and corrosion prevention in aircraft, autos, buses and of course boats. I am not promoting the product or company, just a life long mechanic that has used most products on the market and my first grab off the shelf is Corrosion X.

Use White Grease on this parts bevore assembling again. Use Wax Spray on parts that you can't paint and that shouldn't move except for those that get hot such as exhaust parts. Check the bolts after a few hours of use. The problem with the last screw can often be solved by not removing the screws that have already been loosened and even tightening them again until the last screw has also loosened. Otherwise it has to bear the load of the other screws and of course it is even more difficult to open. Happy New Year and stay away from crocodiles instead learn from Crocodile Dundee about their death roll!

A tip for you when you say the last bolt always sticks yes it does. Sometimes because it is the stubborn one and you take out the easier ones first and sometimes shit happens pardon my language. However a lot of the time it is because it is the last bolt you have released the other ones hence there is more pressure on that last bolt as the assembly has had tension released at other points. This makes breaking it free of corrosion etc more difficult. However next time you find yourself in that situation put back the other bolts tightly and start with that one.

Great job on dismantling the windvane. When you reassemble it it would be a great idea to use anti seize paste on the moving parts. I see in a separate comment that some one suggested grease. Anti seize is a better option as it is a grease but has anti seize properties which will reduce the corrosion which causes the parts to seize up in the first place. Companies like `Loctite` make good quality anti seize but any reputable brand would be fine ...Keep up the good work, love seeing what you are doing...

great video as usual 2.47 funny maria , the music you had was really nice too , when stripping the wind vane you could use emery cloth if you have any to clean away the corrosion , and re assemble with graphite grease or anti seize compound both of these should be easy to get if not use plenty of normal grease to protect moving parts , looks like you have everything under control take it easy

Vinegar is pretty magical. So is 1 part acetone and 1 part ATF (automatic transmission fluid) it works way better than any of those spray lubes like wd40. Even straight ATF is better than wd40. ATF has a clearer in it designed to remove corrosion and muck.

I would seriously think about drilling a small hole into the swivel so you could use a grease gun with marine grease and keep it lubed. Do a quick google search for "needle grease tip and look at the images. You don't even need to put a grease zerk on if you don't want to but installing grease zerks is not that difficult. A shot of grease on a monthly basis will keep that working free. Additionally you might consider buying a dead blow hammer for hitting those soft aluminum parts. The dead blow hammer won't dent the parts but yet packs a wallop.

This came up in my recommended viewing just now and I recall recently advising that you do not freedive with a snorkel in your mouth ... now I see this, so let me PLEASE put into perspective what you guys just did ...
Once upon a time, in an estuary/mangrove/rainforest/muddy bank far far away ...
my man and his four SF soldier friends were minding their own business, patrolling along silently and slowly as usual, when a salty (salt water crocodile, for those that don't speak australian) reared up onto its hind legs, around 10 metres from them and ran at them with incredible speed.
Ever see a gecko lizard run?
Because they told me it was exactly like that; like a mini T-Rex coming at them with the speed of a train !!
It took five of Australia's finest, simultaneously emptying their mags into the animal, to drop it just in front of them.
Now these men would slap sharks out of their way when they were in the water and think nothing of it, but none of them ever went looking for a salty, unarmed and in a dinghy that a croc would destroy in a heartbeat.
The thing about salty's, that every aussie kid learns whilst being breast fed, is that once they taste human, they stay!
Then they venture further and take more risks in search of it.
Imagine if you had not been lucky, imagine other yotties subsequently anchoring and visiting each other in their dinghies after that salty had gotten a taste of you ...

Highly recommend using a heat gun or propane torch to heat the aluminum before wacking it or even just tapping the aluminum around the stainless bolt after heating and watch the bolt magically exit. Refrain from hitting the bolts as they may break or mushroom and then require drilling out.

    • @WhiteSpotPirates
      @WhiteSpotPirates  3 года назад +1

Well, all depends on the groove of the video...I think it works both ways. The time lapse helps to show the length of the process a lot better in my opinion. It shows how many times u have to go forth and back and move things around etc. u cannot get the same effect if u just show single bolts. For me, for this project, the timelapse was the only way to show the lengthyness of the process which is why i did it.
