Welcome to Untie The Lines! my name is Nike, I bought an aluminum 37 foot sailboat in Panama in 2013 that I named KARL. I spent a good year refitting it, mostly by myself and with the help of awesome friends, and then (mostly) solo sailed my sailboat around the western Caribbean.
In 2016, I crossed the Panama Canal, had a major engine break down, a near sinking experience and a serious foot injury which got me stuck along the Pacific coast of Central and South America.
In this Episode, I might have anchored my friend Maria’s sailboat a tiny bit too close to the shallows and she pays me back with a wasabi challenge. Paul, Luca, Maria and I go on a quick island excursion before we head back to the Marina to pick up more stuff.
In total, we ended up spending nearly three months on Joana and it’s time to head back to the Pear islands where Paul and my sailboat are patiently waiting for us.
Oh, and there was this thing called Xmas as well, but who wants to see Xmas in April, so I decided to skip that.

I always thought Paul was an old salt who had been at this life for decades. I'm surprised that he's new to it. I also appreciate car metaphors so, good work Paul. Never stop learning.
He’s had the boat for four years now but did not know anything about sailing when he started. He was a cowboy before 😜. He surly has made his experiences over the last years but nothing in comparison to the knowledge that Maria carries.

..... laughing .... the bird going for the amusement park ride on the wind generator how great is that ..... so this is Christmas, then Maria is back from her three month stint .... success with a dog on the beach can be determined by how long it takes to get all the sand washed out .. smilin .. that was one happy pup .... the electric motor for the plastic chopper looks great, had sorta expected a big heavy flywheel that would keep it's motion assisted by a hand crank or a foot peddle .... got me wondering .. does a 3D printer require special grade of plastic? .... that what you showed you have made from reused plastic, was that extruded .... exciting seeing your dream materialize .... thx for sharing Nike ..... as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....

😂 no, unfortunately no magical unlimited budget. She used to charter but that was obviously no option during the pandemic and now she is working on a research vessel every now and then to fill up the cruising kitty 👍

Pro tip: spicy things are spicy with an oil. As water and oil don't mix, drinking water won't help. However, ALCOHOL and oil do mix, consequently drinking after eating hot items means that it will clean the spicy oil out of your mouth immediately. ;)
Interesting dinner table arrangement there - mahi-sushi with enough wasabi to set your mouth on fire - plus a massive bottle of alcohol to put the fire out! Interesting to see Maria so calm about the depth of that water. Maybe she knew the depth from the start.
We were just tapping really lightly and it’s all sand and we knew that the water was just coming up again. It was not really a dangerous situation. But Maria is pretty calm in general, that for sure, even if the shit really hits the fan 🙈
Paul is my spirit animal
Those cactus are great grilled like a steak or burger. You can eat the little purple “pears” (inside) too. They’re like a fruit, sweet.
I knew about the fruit but never knew u could grill the whole cactus? Cool. U throw them on with the skin and then peel them? Or how does that work? Will have to google that...👍 thanks for sharing

😂 it was a great little vacation on Joana. It was beautiful just to hang out and cruise a bit, have company, cook together, explore together. We also do that when buddy baiting, but surely different when everyone is on the same boat and Joana is such a beautiful boat to live on 🥰

Yes, already feeling a lot better, thanks. As I said, was nothing super serious...had just been slacking on treating some symptoms and then it got a bit bad all of a sudden 😂🙈. But all on the mend now 🤞🏼

I bought the parts in Germany a long time ago, they were 400€ I think. The motor was purchased here in Panamá, was 600$ (sponsored by one of my followers, Oliver) and machining the shaft was 180$. Sooo...1.300$ más o menos.
You can get ready made machines, all certified and what not from www.plasticpreneur.com they make some decent stuff. Ours is a tad DIY as usual 🤣

I can not understand Y Maria does not have a channel of her own with her vessel Joana it would be interesting to see the ups and downs of her life aboard Yes she is a private person but this vid tells me she can open up and share her life on board her channel would grow fast if she would want it too
It totally would, I agree, Maria and Joana have huge potential. But it’s just not her thing and that makes it a bit hard to run a vlog, you really have to enjoy it to make it happen...she would need someone to be with her on the boat that films her to make it happen 😜.

Ich sehe nun seit dem ersten Video zu. Mir gefällt sehr gut was Du tust. Bereits zusehen macht gute Laune. Doch irgendwie scheinst Du auch ein wenig fest zu hängen. Bist Du in einer Sackgasse gelandet oder sind deine Pläne für eine Pazifiküberquerung noch präsent? Ich bin nach wie vor neugierig was die Pläne für Deine Zukunft auf Karl angeht.
Auf alle Fälle jedoch beste Grüße aus Berlin, Gesundheit und stets eine Handbreit Wasser unter dem Kiel auf deinem Weg!
Also zuerst mal gibt’s ja im Moment sowas wie eine Pandemie und wie du vllt weißt sind viele Grenzen dicht 🤔. Ich finde es einfach nicht sinnvoll, in so einer Zeit weite Strecken ins Ungewisse zu segeln.
Zum anderen ist das “Strecke machen” nicht meine Priorität. Bis jetzt ist jedes Jahr etwas dazwischen gekommen für die Überquerung (Motortotalschaden, Familiäre Termine, Löcher im Unterwasserschiff, ein zersplitterter Fersenknochen, eine Pandemie...) und ich hab ja Zeit, warum soll ich es also auf Teufe komm raus übers Knie brechen, wenn die Umstände nicht wirklich gut sind? Ich verstehe, dass für viele “DIE Pazifik- oder Atlantiküberquerunt” das non plus Ultra sind und viele sich darauf konzentrieren oder man nur dann wirklich gesegelt hat, wenn man’s mal gemacht hat. Für mich steht das Leben auf Karl im Vordergrund, nicht meine Route oder wo ich bin. Daher fühle ich mich auch nicht in einer Sackgasse. Aber ich kann verstehen, wie es sich für jemanden von außen so anfühlt, wenn man permanent drauf wartet, dass ich doch bitte endlich den Pazifik überquere.
Mittlerweile ist es schon so, dass ich fast denke “okay ich fahr jetzt einfach” damit das ständige Gefrage aufhört und ich einfach Weiter mein Ding machen kann 😂🙈.
Im Moment steht in den nächsten Monaten keine Überquerung an. Mal gucken, was die Grenzen und die Pandemie im November sagen, dann schau’n wir mal weiter. 🤞🏼Bis dahin geht’s weiter mit dem Leben in der scheinbaren Sackgasse 😜

@@WhiteSpotPirates Naja, ich wollte gar nicht darauf hin drängen. Ich erinnere mich an Videos in denen das deine eigene Idee war, den Pazifik zu erkunden. Insofern frage ich mich dann, ob das noch Thema ist oder eventuell durch etwas anderes ersetzt wurde. Und damit meine ich natürlich jetzt keine Kap-Umseglung oder so. Ich bin nur neugierig, was denn die Pläne sein könnten. Ich sehe ja mit Spannung und Leidenschaft zu ... seit Jahren. Ich denke da kann man dann auch mal neugierig sein was noch so kommen kann. :)

Ja, das war meine eigene Idee, ich hab immer ganz viele Ideen 😂. Manche werden umgesetzt und manche nicht. Ich hab diese “Idee” noch nicht aufgegeben, aber es kann auch sein, dass es nie passiert. Irgendwie hat mir das Leben bis jetzt jedes Jahr gesagt “nee, jetzt nicht” und da fragt man sich natürlich auch, was das zu bedeuten hat 😂.
Und ja, viele Dinge haben sich in den letzten acht Jahren verändert und mein Fokus und meine Prioritäten haben sich etwas verändert. Aber aufgegeben habe ich die Hoffnung auf eine Ozeanüberquerung mit Karl noch nicht ☺️. Ich hoffe, das beantwortet deine Frage ☺️
@@WhiteSpotPirates Ja, tut es. Ich bin mir beim zusehen mitunter auch nicht so ganz sicher, ob Karl noch ausreichend Reserven für ein solches Unterfangen mitbringt. Karl ist ja nicht mehr der Jüngste. Dann denke ich mir, eventuell wäre es doch ganz klug alle deine Fans legen zusammen und es kann einen "Karl der Zweite" geben oder so?! Andererseits, es wird kommen wie es soll. Und sollte der Pazifik nicht dabei sein, dann hat es eben nicht sollen sein. Kommt Zeit, kommt Rat. Erstmal noch einen schönen Tag dir!
