    Thank you to everybody who has supported the creation of these video and has shared this journey with my sailboat Karl with me so far. It would not have been the same without you.
    This episode was filmed in 01 / 2021.
    -
    Welcome to Untie The Lines! my name is Nike, I bought an aluminum 37 foot sailboat in Panama in 2013 that I named KARL. I spent a good year refitting it, mostly by myself and with the help of awesome friends, and then (mostly) solo sailed my sailboat around the western Caribbean.
    In 2016, I crossed the Panama Canal, had a major engine break down, a near sinking experience and a serious foot injury which got me stuck along the Pacific coast of Central and South America.
    In this Episode, The New Year starts with a hull clean and some sail repair to get ready for the first solo sail of 2021.
    Enjoy and Ahoy,
    Nike & Karl

    The scene with the birds starting at 2:20 was amazing. That is so cool when birds gather closely like that when they are near the ground or close to trees swarming.

    It never ceases to amaze me how little aware we, local sailors, are, accustomed to our beaches that they clean every day, to how many plastics are in the seas and how the paradisaical and lonely beaches in the end are where all the plastic that we throw ends up without regard.

    • @WhiteSpotPirates
      @WhiteSpotPirates  3 года назад +7

      Yes, I think the same which is why I try to show the mess every once in a while. I know that people don’t like to see it but I try to show it in a way that is “oh let’s use this instead of wasting it” instead of just saying “oh this is so bad”. But I understand that some people prefer to see the cleaned beaches and not the reality 🙈.
      I don’t remember one beach that I visited in the last 3-4 years that had no plastic. And it’s funny that u said how accustomed many people are to cleaned beaches. For us, it became so normal to put up our hammock and be surrounded by trash. We would actually be surprised when the beach was fairly clean 🙈 which is very very sad but shows how immense the problem is. Of course it needs to be stopped at its source, that’s the most important, but we also have to clean up the mess we already created!

      @@WhiteSpotPirates When sailing our mantra is TAKE EVERYTHING HOME. Nothing goes into the sea that is not at least biodegradable. Occasionally something is lost overboard by accident, but it is rare. In your case where you are located I think it would be a great idea to have the local inhabitants go around the beaches putting garbage into sacks for which they could BE PAID perhaps one dollar per bag (?). In poorer countries like the one you're in it would be a great incentive for the locals to get involved and be rewarded. Here in Queensland Australia we have a system where every bottle or can is worth 10 cents when returned to a collection place. People here have turned this into a thriving business. I do agree that the problem is at the source ............... but look on the bright side. When the worlds oil reserves run out there will no longer be any plastic used in containers or packaging. We will revert back to glass and paper as we had in the 1950's. :)

    • @WhiteSpotPirates
      @WhiteSpotPirates  3 года назад +1

      @@vaughangill7288 yes, that is a great idea but also it needs to be thought about where to put the trash / what to do with it. Just collecting is not gonna help much. With our precious plastic machines, we are trying to set up a small business around the plastic waste. That way, money can actually be generated through the recycling and then pay for the trash collecting rather than the collecting having to be funded by donations or sth like that. The biggest problem in these areas is the lack of trash infrastructure. So even if u collected the trash, where are you gonna put it? Landfill (bad for ground water)? Burn it bad for air)? Transport to the city (who pays for that?). It takes some time to set up a working system, just paying a couple of dollars here and there for a beach clean is good for raising awareness but it needs more than that to really tackle the problem. 👍
      They are trying to implement a “trash return system” like the one u mentioned on Saboga, one of the islands here. Will be interesting to see how that works out 👍

    • @vaughangill7288
      @vaughangill7288 3 года назад +2

      @@WhiteSpotPirates I think your effort is to be very much admired and although it is a small cottage industry I think every little bit helps. To achieve real impact this sort of problem does need major infrastructure and a lot on investment by someone. What we are doing here is turning the waste plastic into park benches and tables for use by the people in public areas. The local councils are paying for the recycling plants. Trash in, useable and beneficial products out. What is required is the will, and the will is sometimes very hard to find. Keep up your very fine work. :)

      @@WhiteSpotPirates 3D printing could be a way to recicle and convert plastics into usefull things for the local comunities... Mittlerweile habe ich Karl ganz gut unter Kontrolle und natürlich auch viel mehr Erfahrung mit Reparaturen und dem Bootsleben und dem Einhandsegeln und deswegen bin ich natürlich auch entspannter und hab Zeit und Energie, mich um unser Plastik Recycling Projekt IN MOCEAN “nebenbei” zu kümmern. Es hilft natürlich auch ungemein, dass ich mich mit der Videoproduktion nun schon seit ein paar Jahren über Wasser halten kann. Das bringt auch etwas mehr Ruhe ins Leben. This inverter was too small and inefficient. That's enough for a razor. However larger inverters also have a higher no-load current. You should have a small one for using with the batteries and a big one for using while motoring. For a repair find a tv, radio or computer shop and ask for a guy who is still doing this soldering stuff. But he has to order some new cap's and transistors so it can take a few days. It may be cheaper or less time consuming to by a new one and keep the fried one for some cold winter days.

    Another great post Nike! There’s a Netflix doc called seaspiracy, if you’ve seen it, curious if, in your opinion you’re seeing more fishing paraphernalia than anything else washed up on the beaches there. I don’t care what your answer is either way, just curious about what you see there. Thank you!

    • @WhiteSpotPirates
      @WhiteSpotPirates  3 года назад +2

      The data that was referred to in the documentary was from an analysis of the great garbage patch...so it cannot be taken for the whole ocean or the shorelines. The situation is very different on shorelines. A lot of single use plastic or thinner plastic or plastic containers will have broken up and / or sunk before it even gets to the GGP but on the beaches, that’s what u find most: bottles, food containers, containers for shampoo, motor oil, cooking oil, shoes...and of course lines and the occasional net and those yes come from fishing, but mostly from the local fishermen fishing with their pangas.

    That's curious that you're waiting for Precision Sails to send your main (unless there's a time lag involved here). I sent off a request for a quote recently (code-0, genoa, main) - but I've heard nothing!
    Very sad about your inverter - should be a fuse in there at least. I'm a bit picky about AC things onboard but, provided I don't switch everything on at the same time, my Victron Multiplus inverter/charger can handle the hot water system (only on if I can afford the battery power), my induction hotplate and my 2-cup electric kettle. Best thing - my Multiplus has an alarm and shuts down things if I get greedy.

      This video was filmed in January (which is why I am talking about waking up on the 1st of January at the beginning of the video😜), so yes, there is a time lag. I had just hoped to have the sail by then because I wanted to use it for this little trip. I got them eventually...was a short delay due to the cloth for the sail cover not being available. I usually don’t have problems hearing back from them...how did u reach out to them? Maybe try a quick phone call?🤔

    • @ianb4801
      @ianb4801 3 года назад

      @@WhiteSpotPirates oh I missed the bit about the 1st of January because my eyes feasting on that fabulous meal switched my ears off I think. I sent a quote request to Precision Sails via their interactive web page but nothing happened; as I saw a bad review about "responsiveness and timeliness", I used this pages as a bit of a test. Still thinking about sails, perhaps looking at laminate-cruising materials (as Ruby Rose did), to get flatter sails so I can point higher and heel less - but the expense "worries" me too. Growing up in Australia, when Rolly Tacker was larger-than-life in Sydney-Hobart races makes me wonder about buying from them, as Greta and Michael have done on For Tuna. My sails are far happier than your previous ones and the main still feels pretty still when sitting on my boom and not a single tear or patch, just that pointing has me thinking. Also a code-0 so I get better performance moving from close hauled to a square reach; I have the brightest of pink cruising asymm which works great downwind to square, but Thistle Doo is so heavy and every bit of lift forward of that helps. But it's hard to have everything I suppose.
      Did you find poor Karl's sad upwind performance improved with his new sails?
