It’s broader themes are timeless for sure, but that movie came out at the end of a decade that was known for middle-class prosperity. Compared to now, young people like the narrator, who is supposed to be in his 30s, had way more disposable income, housing was more affordable, and the American dream (whatever the hell that really is) was more attainable. It would be interesting to see how The fight club story would be approached if it was written today, against the backdrop of the increased wealth inequality, insane cost-of-living and housing crisis

Fight Club is a must watch for young adults. In a hyper individualistic neo-liberal capitalist society where consumerism, materialism and absolute 'freedom' and 'power' without any sense of responsibility defines our lives and every aspect of it, where men are told to 'man up' while also being warned about toxic masculinity, a movie like this serves as a general reminder of why skepticism, non-conformity and non-submission are absolute necessities to realize our true potential.

    • @MattAngiono
      @MattAngiono 2 месяца назад +19

It's too bad that most of us millennials watched it as entertainment and missed the deeper meaning..
We didn't realize just how much it was about us even if our consumer lifestyles took on a different flavor.
Many of my peers, even if not attacked to the things in this way, did the same thing with experiences.
We move from one fun activity to the next, and I know so many people who can't do these things without drinking beers or getting blazed.
I'm there with them half the time, but also do my own thing.
I'm not trying to judge either, but it seems like we all lack a true collective will to analyze the system and fight back against our enslavement.
I hope younger generations can resist better, though I'm not sure how that's working out, when I look at mental health rates or try to understand what effects the helicopter parenting and coddling has had.
They should definitely see this movie though.
It's weird and dark but the message is on point

I loved these things and they bought me joy and i had so much sentimental attachment to them. Now they all mean almost nothing to me.
But even just hanging with friends doing nothing was so fun. Whether just listening to music, gaming, talking, watching movies, smoking pot, drinking, parties, whatever.
I think many of us expect/expected all of these things to stay fun as they are/were forever?
Older in life, i managed to buy a house (still paying it off) , it feels like a great accomplishment and i am proud and thankful i am not stuck renting, but it also feels empty.
Probably because i have no family of my own?
Life is just not fun like it was.
Having a job gives life purpose. But being a wage slave/slave to debt is a weight and a weight that makes it all feel at times pointless.

My defiance of the system was to build a home on a truck, all the comforts, no rent and I regained a huge amount of freedom and peace of mind in my life, when I decided to put an ad up to help others do the same I was surpised at how little interest there was. People would rather rent a house they are never at because they are at work all the time to pay for it instead, plenty were intersted in renting it even though the ad was clear that it wasnt for rent or sale because reading a few lines of text is to much for your average pleb nowadays as is the effort of building something you own to live in apparently. It blows my mind to this very day how far away my thoughts are from the average person out there.

Not that anyone would listen to *MY* dumb arse about such things. 😂 After all, you gotta be wealthy, famous, popular, influential, and well-marketed for anyone to listen. Be rich and you'll be heard. 💪😎✌️ And clearly, THAT is what is most important, right? Being heard.

I play music for a living (bars, weddings, corporate) but It feels meaningless to me after so many years. Part of me would like to make some kind of change but Im feeling its too late at my age.
Im at least going to continue writing my own music for now (which is something I had ignored in the past) and see what happens but I dont know what I would even do with it.

      @@Durmomo0 that's great!
Yeah who knows with the music industry in the dumps now.
I've spent years trying to get better at guitar and drums and even trying to sing, only to watch AI demolish the whole artistic side of the economy.
I mean, it's not gone yet, but things really are falling apart pretty hard.
But I know for a fact everyone in my life still loves music and still likes to see att made by humans.
      That isn't changing.
I'm spending a lot of time trying to re-imagine a new system (not by myself) that could change the whole paradigm.
I think most humans could happily follow their interests and passion and be taken care of in such a system.
No one had built it yet, but we all know it's possible.
AI and robotics can already replace almost all tedious labor.
We just have to make a collective decision to ditch capitalism, tell the rich to f off to their islands or whatever, and cease back the power to control our own lives.
Don't get me wrong, this will be difficult lol.
      But it's possible.
      The technology is already there.
      The will is getting there.
The coordination is difficult but doable.
We just have to break the resistance.
If I were you, or quite specifically, what I want to write songs about, is this more beautiful future and mode of being we can create.
I intend to use my talents to try to spread the awareness about these new things, while also relating to the emptiness we all feel in this current culture.
My music skills are still a little lacking, as i keep trying to learn everything lol, but my visual art has always been strong.
The other cool thing about art is that it can also just be for you.
You can share it, or not, but either way it carries meaning.
But I would lean to the sharing side, if I'm speaking from my higher self.
I would encourage you to do that too.
Don't wait until you're "ready" as that can always be further down the road.
Just start putting some things out there to get the flow going. Things can always be improved on, too (i am speaking to myself here too).
      Anyway, cheers.
      Hope that helps!
I'm not than happy to give more feedback too, if you like.
Plenty of ideas where you could reach out with some of these things, or where people are thinking about the future world we're trying to create

I contend with Nietche on his take of the last man. Sure, a man with no faith and no community will devolve into this husk of a creature. But these are boys among men who actually develop their conscience to enter with, embrace, and support a community with ferocity. It doesn't matter his rank or status, only that he serves to better the lives and conditions for his fellow man.
During the building of the transcontinental railroad an industrious man invested in buying livestock for the farms along the route of his railroad, improving their capacity and thus improving the prosperity of his own railroad enterprise. This is wisdom.
Serve your community and defend them against those who would make them mere slaves.
Even if it's just the warehouse that you maintain for a corporate manufacturing company, serve the lowest rank of workers who trudge through the excessive expectations set upon them while they attend church once a week. They are your foundation. Care for them as much as a pastor would care for his congregation. This lets you serve your purpose as an agent of life's progress. What little you may be able to do might serve better for your fellow man. Look out for one another and as a team you might well sail your ship into calmer waters.

I think the main problem is just the way our brain works. it actually doesn't want us to relax. im speaking from my own experience, but our brain just cannot give us a cool down litteraly once. Cause its our brain in the end which controls how we feel. Our brain doesnt nagotiate with out rational thoughts. Its only driven by primal fear and reward. If we fit the image our brain wants us to be we feel happy, if not then we don't. its our own brain which is making us depressed, anxious and sad and he doesn't negotiate, he rules and he shows the way, no way round it. I think this is what jordan peterson also means when he talks about god and this is the way to him, that its not something primal but something devine that leads us. its this path. But we're not in control of our reward and punishment, even though its our brain. funny huh?

His line “are we not perfectly happy” spoken to his sister while in the mental institution was the words of an enlightened man, so post publication perhaps he was. There is further than the will to power a man can go, that is to absolute perfection. Ramana Maharshi, Meister Eckhart, Martin Bauber, Eckhart Tolle lived there. That Kingdom is Within. The outer form means less than the internal landscape.

First, you’re categorized. That’s what the measurements of “achievements”, like grades and testing begin. Then, once the “appropriate” label has been applied, you’re compartmentalized, separated into specific groups. Then, you’re forced into competition, one group versus another, divide and conquer. Then, you’re isolated, stripped of meaning, of purpose. Pacified in your isolation with comforts and convenience to remain compliant. It’s a process, the system. And, all the while you’re expected to smile, say thank you, be good, be compliant. And, maybe you stay that way. Life doesn’t throw a curve ball. You move from one day to the next without considering any of it. Without needing or wanting to. Or, maybe life does throw a curve ball. Or, you see something, hear something, maybe dream something. You get a sense, however fleeting, that not all is what it is or should be. Maybe something is missing. Maybe something shouldn’t be. You question. Be careful when you start to question. It’s a foreboding path, questioning. And, the questions. Does it matter? Is it worth it? Who am I? What is happening? Is there a purpose? And, then there’s why, probably the most difficult of them all. Why is really difficult. Why varies and morphs. It’s like a phantom. One moment you see it, grasp it. You think you understand, have the answer. The next moment, it’s gone. You didn’t have it. You were wrong, or maybe just not right, incomplete perhaps. So, what’s the alternative? What’s the solution? Maybe ignorance is bliss and questions better left to others. Maybe there is no issue, just a search to ensure one doesn’t exist. But, that’s not true. Everyone has issues. Be careful when questioning. Be especially careful when asking why. Answers aren’t for everyone. The road less-traveled is that way for a reason. Be careful when asking why it’s so. And, good luck with that.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t this a white nationalist view that promotes racial homogeneity and disavows diversity? If so, yikes. If I’m thinking of something else, my mistake and I’m willing to be humbly corrected

OK so it does mean the thing I thought. Guys, a classic tool of autocrats, dictators, fascists and authoritarians is scapegoating: to convince people that all of their problems are because of the other, whether that other is somebody of a different race, nationality, ethnicity or what have you. It’s important to recognize that you are being played. Our struggles are not the fault of these others. The very people peddling these ideas, like Trump, do so while they court billionaires like Elon Musk and, when president, pass laws that benefit that billionaire class. Meanwhile, they keep us divided by stupid identity labels and arguing over dumb culture war shit so we can’t unite together and fight back. Just something to think about, trusting that this channel is a space where we can respect a free exchange of ideas. Cheers

@@orthodoxindian9442 is not a much by nature as nurture.
This culture and system brainwashed it into us from day one.
      Women are naturally nurturing.
They hold that life giving instinct that means a huge painful sacrifice to endure.
But we live in a culture where money is equated to survival potential.
There desire to provide for a child becomes intertwined with financial stability.
Our culture doesn't have to be this way, though we can't just change it overnight.
I do her what your saying though, and feel it too.
I'm not a rich man and don't even work at the moment which basically gives me zero hopes of a serious relationship.
I feel the selection process you describe without even talking to them.
Just saying, we are the byproduct of toxic values.
I'm sure there are plenty of men and women who want to change this.
If we had a culture where we could feel secure, then this wouldn't be an issue.
It's just not easy to build
