- Life is short. It’s ending one minute at a time. Why waste it on fulfilling other people’s expectations? This is just one of those questions presented in a novel written by Chuck Palahniuk named Fight Club.
The film version of Fight Club directed by David Fincher, starring Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, and Helena Bonham Carter, could be considered one of the best and most impactful movies ever made when looking at its reception and ongoing popularity.
Fight Club isn’t shy of over-the-top violence, contains a fair amount of explicit language, and, of course, the obnoxious behavior of its characters. However, it’s definitely more profound than just men coming together to beat each other up.
The story is built on several thoughtful concepts that are interesting and possibly applicable to our own lives.
It tells a story about a generation of people without a clear purpose, without hope, raised with false expectations, and repressed by ever-tightening social norms. What if our existence is pointless? What if God doesn’t like us? What if we’re nothing more than a compost heap? How do we find meaning in a meaningless existence?
This video explores several philosophical ideas that Fight Club presents us. For those who aren’t familiar with the story: this analysis explains and reveals the plot.

This is very applicable in real life. I was stuck in a high paying job which I hated but it afforded me a fancy lifestyle but deep down I wasn't happy. I lost my job and a lot of savings during the 3 years of covid. Basically I lost everything and had to start from scratch. But it was a blessing in disguise. I was free now to explore other career options and 2 years later I got everything back. It wouldn't have happened if I was still stuck at that old job.
I still believe one of the best scenes was when Tyler held the store clerk at gunpoint and told him to follow his dream or he would die. This just proves how we self limit our entire lives. What could you accomplish if you were held at gunpoint?

@johnmann Isnt that how Tyson become so ferocious? Someone killed his pigeon and he went apeshit. From then on he discovered that he really enjoyed hurting people. Recently he took some type of crazy psychedelic and it created the awareness that he could do other things with extreme passion. (all from a recent interview he did with Tony robbins).
I have absolutely no reasons to believe this but I'm positive if held at gunpoint, dormant genes and training I never did would kick in and like Jason Bourne I'd end up systematically defeating this gun wielding guru and his entire organization

This movie was a major pivot point in my life: it changed my whole world view. It took my nihilism and gave it an outlet. Not in fighting, but in the way I shaped my personal philosophy. Ultimately, my fight club became skydiving. I get as many of those "near life experiences" as I needed in order to turn down the volume on my nihilism.

The whole "Self improvement is masturbation, now self destruction..." quote, is explained in more detail in the book. Self improvement is a lot of work for a small reward (just like masturbation), but self destruction is the opposite, it is fairly easy to leave permanent scars, so it is little work for a big reward.
If you like the dark humor in the movie, you will love the book, there are so many small hints and tidbits.
That being said, it is one of the most true to the book movies ever made.
I finished the book 10 days ago, it was just as good as the movie. Infact the Tyler Durden psychology was surfaced more in the book.
Literally just finished the book this morning and was glad to find it a close reflection. The chapter where he flies in and out of different time zones and checks his watch but loses track of time is a perfect metaphor of a social construct defined by a consumer product.

I watched Fight Club as a teen or young adult and it was like thoughts and feelings that I could not put into words were explained to me. Fight Club is one of those films that change you positively everyone should have seen it at least once. Films with such a powerful message are no longer made.
Agreed. I felt a little unstable for a few days after seeing it for the first time. I felt like the 4th wall of my mind had been smashed. Mushrooms were the only thing that even came close to that feeling. I miss it.

In real life we're doing drugs, drinking, suicide. Because we're lonely. I was astonished when I learned this movie did not do well when released. I immediately saw it as a metaphor for modern life.

I owe a lot of what I have in life and much of who I am to this movie. I kept Fight Club playing constantly in my room while going through high school and I’m certain it altered my understanding of myself and the world. I wouldn’t be nearly the same without it, and I always come back to it when I feel the need for a mental reset.
In German, "Einzelgänger" is a noun that means "loner" or "outsider". It is derived from the words "Einzel" meaning "single" or "individual" and "gänger" meaning "walker" or "goer".
An Einzelgänger is someone who prefers to be alone or who does not fit in with the crowd.
This is the best movie I have ever seen. It has transformed me from a depressed loser to a man with a meaningful life

Lol yeah the matrix is just as if not more impactful. Metaphors like blue pill and red pill are still used today, the concept of our reality being complete false and all the endless metaphors in the movie are still and will always be relevant.
I read this book & saw the movies ages ago, and yet its “teachings” have become more and more applicable with each passing year, especially as consumerism continues to rule and people seem less and less authentic. You’ve done an amazing job with this video!

These two are the perfect example of the yin and the yang. If Tyler didn’t have a little of the Narrator in him he’d destroy the world. The fact that the fight club itself was simply metaphorical in the sense of enduring a lifestyle of self inflicted hardship - like taking a cold shower at 6am, doing nofap, etc. - and people took it literal and started fight clubs, armed robberies because of the movie shows you we are still space monkeys even after being shown the truth. The idea is to live authentic, be in the moment, embrace hardship, discipline and detachment, not to literally start a fight club and your own version of project mayham 🤦♂️

This is what happens when the artist does not explain his art, when they deliberately leave things untold and not specify.
Unexplained art is useless art, as true art entails a clear message which when unexplained, may be misinterpreted and lost. Had there been an explanation provided, misinterpretation would not happen. It's a curse of modern art, though.

I saw this movie when I was like 13 or 14. I am now 18. It is one of my favorite movies. I didn’t remember what happened in the movie (only the main plot), but I did remember how it made me feel when I saw it. Those are really the best movies, the ones you remember what the movie was meant to convey. Movies with strong and impactful meanings behind them
This is the 2nd message I got today about "letting go". The part about "killing hope" really hit hard because recently, I just realized, being a little too hopeful can slow down your healing because you build expectations that hurt you. Thanks for this man. Haven't seen the movie myself but now I kind of want to.

This shook me up so much when I watched it. I was much younger though so I missed some of the nuances which are so much clearer now. Age definitely puts a lot in perspective, lived experience, I suppose. A great film!
This is a really dope video. I like the part where it was related to how one switching from one echo chamber and cult like atmosphere can often mean just falling into another one so freedom is found in choosing to live life authentically on your own terms.
'Losing all hope is freedom!' I find it bittersweet and very powerful when I hit bottom in any situation in my life. It's when you have no choice but let go of control. It's actually when just about anything is possible.
You are no longer a slave at that point. And that scares people, women will protect you and other men will respect you. You'll feel alone but you won't mind.

It's refreshing to see someone who fully appreciates the wisdom in Fight Club AND the mind-traps which masquerade as freedom but are simply another sort of mind control and nihilistic self-destruction which is not healthier than the consumerism which originally trapped the narrator. I love to watch the movie, I don't want to live the movie. When I see people modeling their lives on Tyler Durden I wonder if they understood the last part of the movie at all. "Zorba the Buddha" - I love that. The main reason I didn't dive deeply into Eastern religions was that I saw so much austerity and denial of earthly delights. I can have a sensual and spiritual experience walking barefoot on dewy grass and experiencing the delight of the earth as the grass grows. Again I thank you for introducing me to Osho, I look forward to exploring his works.

This was probably the best analysis of fight club I've ever seen, well done. Does a very good job of holding up a mirror to the viewer who takes certain things in the film at face value without questioning the inherent hypocrisy.
Movie is such an inspiration. That oppressive cubical life. The sick being ignored. People living but not really doing what they love. It is what many of us face in the real world. I'm scared of how I'm feeling better when I learn about life lessons from RUclips instead of learning in school. These lessons about life should be taught at school, explained by the teachers so that teenagers can deal better with life and prepare themselves for the future.

The release of Fight Club marks a turning point in my life. It changed my entire view of the world. I traded my consumer lifestyle for a life of philosophy.
My fight club were street races, wich funnily enough started to pop up right during that time. During the day I was nothing more than a corporate drone, at night though I pushed myself to my limits. The near death experiences, the adrenaline... It was the first time many of us truly felt alive.

There’s this thing about tears … we have different types of them . The one we are in physical or emotional pain releases muscle relaxers and some sedatives that our body produces naturally. That’s why after crying we feel tired but release . Tyler was just using this fact since his doctor refused to prescribe him sleeping pills

I've seen a lot of hollow people who work 100 000$/y jobs. They take opiods, drink alcohol, can't hold onto relationship. They are trying to fill their lives with materials such as houses, cars, e.t.c. But deeply in soul they are still hollow, lost and alone.
On the other hand I've seen people having a 30 000$/y job who live relaxed life within their means. They have what they want, they surround themselves with people who care about what's within them, not what's within their wallet. They use money and material things as instruments to reach something, that would bring them fulfillment and not as AN endgoal and fulfillment itself.
It's really doesn't matter how much money do you make or where do you live. All that's important is how you view the world. Everything is within our heads.

I have resonated very strongly with this movie’s message since the 90’s. A little over a year ago I built a pretty expensive gaming PC that I saved a long time for. The first thing I did upon getting it built and set up was hang my Tyler Durden poster directly above it with the quote “the things you own end up owning you.” It serves as a constant reminder to simply view it as something that I have for fun and to not let it become part of my identity and view it as a possession. This way if something happens to it like it breaks or gets stolen, I do not mourn over it as an expensive possession, but I can have the self-awareness to simply let go of it as something fun that was once in my life but is now gone. It wasn’t until I found stoicism that I saw the stark similarities which made me like the quote even more. Love the video man. Very nicely done and put together.

I remember watching this movie at 18 and not really fully understanding the message but then I watched it again at 35 and everything made so much more sense to me.
i feel like it is 10000x easier to say to not care about others' opinions of one self, than to actually do it.
The only way to do it is to be aware that they spend all their time worrying about you. That is most people are obsessed by their own narcissism. They may think of you or observe you. But most of the time they are fixated on their own " self image". And worry if others can see that reality of them and the image don`t align.
