This is a hard one. I personally like bland and minimal decor, and I'm American. However, I can see Dan's point. Spending $8,000 on a ticket is no simple matter and one would expect some spice in their decor.
I do believe that part of the blandness is also because of cost cutting. I would be happy with Swiss current product, but I'm sure others expect more.

I think you have to mention in your review if you are comparing products that are offered during Covid or not. Most airlines had to downsize staff to survive and reduce offering. So when comparing Swiss First during Covid with for example Lufthansa during regular time, this is an unfair comparison. Swiss for example provide private limo transfer service in regular time.

Hey Dan. I am Swiss and I had the pleasure to fly business on many different airlines. In my opinion, Swiss does a pretty good job branding themselves. Personally it almost feels touristy when flying with swiss as they have to portray that swissness to tourists. So as a swiss person I like it alot that it is not more „swiss“ than it already is. The real swissness is everything beeing clean, functioning and somewhat discreet. Many of the really rich people in switzerland are not really bragging about it or showing it of. So i think with most of the swiss costumers this design fits well.

If there is one airline that does it better it's Singapore Airlines with the new suites.

Whenever I hear about all these amenities you couldn't use because of COVID, all I could think is each time it made first class less "first class". Like if I flew first class before then someone said "Oh now first class your lounges are closed, and if they're open there won't be any food or drinks. The staff will be less attentive due to staff shortages, the food will suffer as well because of COVID." Like literally the list of reasons to get first class are crossed out one by one to a point where I'm sitting there going "Okay now you're just paying for the bigger seat and nothing else."

In non covid times Dock D would have its on lounge.
The lounges in E are very nice.

As an American living is Switzerland, that was SWISS fully embracing Swiss culture. You rarely every see as you call it "quirky things" or Swiss themed things. My experience has been that the Swiss don't commercialize their culture or flaunt it. Even in really touristy places, you will be hard pressed to find exploitations of Swiss icons or culture. The meal you had sums up Swiss culture; simple sounding and understated, but high quality and executed unbelievably well. Tourism only contributes to about 3% of the economy, and about 70% of passengers through Zurich airport are swiss residents so there is little incentive to cater towards the kitsch touristic aesthetic.

Their Meal service it’s superb, enough for a 10 hrs flight, I don’t expect to eat luxurious meal on a plane, for that I go to a LUXURIOUS Restaurant. Flying one time in one specifically flight doesn’t showed you SWISS Inflight Service. Again, you expect tooooooo much on Pandemic. To work out the opposite runway Dan use the 2 up 2 down method. Runway 16. Add 2 to the 1, take 2 from the 6=Runway 34.
Doesn’t work with all runways but certainly most. Reverse for runway where you simply can’t add 2.

Another fine review! Love your honest critiques. Interesting how people still mistake Sweden for Switzerland. After emigrating from Sweden to California, in 1948, my mom had to explain many times that she was from Sweden and not Switzerland. One fellow college student upon hearing she had lived in Stockholm asked her if she was afraid of the polar bears! Lord knows how she arrived at the idea that polar bears were roaming around Stockholm. 🙄

Well, Stockholm is so much north to almost all Americans. Even to many Canadians (we had a show - north of 60-s, 60 latitude is considered pretty north). And we do have roaming bears, say in Vancouver outskirts :)

Hi Nonstop Dan, I enjoyed your review on this flight. You helped to make up my mind. I was going to bid for an upgrade to First from Business (ZHR-SFO) later this month. Of course, the ground service would be limited due to COVID. However, I would expect fast track through security like Lufthansa. Also, escort would have been nice as well. I'm sure these things will return in due time.

Sorry Dan but I have to disagree. In my humble opinion SWISS offers the best First Class of all Airlines. I don’t understand why u did not use First Class Security Lane? Sure, LX has a First Class Lounge in ZRH. It was just renovated before Covid. I don’t know why all this was not available to u. I fly SWISS at least 4-5 times a year to Bangkok, in First. So I believe that I can judge SWISS... Compared to LH, SWISS First is much better... But that is my impression. Fortunately we all have individual tastes n impressions... Regards, Marc from Germany

The unexciting cabin interior / design is as Swiss as it gets. We don't like bling bling much in Switzerland. I'm pretty certain most FC customers wouldn't enjoy ski-shaped salt & pepper or matterhorn bread.
That said, I'm sorry you got to experience Swiss FC during Covid times, as the ground experience is amazing in non-Covid times. You have a private bus/limo that takes you to/from bus positions (even from the feeder flight). A limo takes you from FC lounge A to FC lounge E, with private passport control. The lounge in E is excellent, etc etc...
I flew Lufthansa First in March and was also underwhelmed by ground services, as FC terminal was closed and no special attention was given to us until we got onboard.
Great review though, I hope you get to try Swiss FC again when it's running "normal" again.

It’s interesting SWISS has lack of Swissness on their flight, however the Swiss are not shy showing Swissness within Switzerland 🇨🇭. It’s rather too much. Don’t you think SWISS has specifically designed to entertain its own people, therefore it’s not their priority to entertain non Swiss. IT is still one of weaknesses in Switzerland, despite of it has ETH, one of the top high tech universities in the world. The cabin design pretty much represents Swissness, many Swiss houses designed like that.

I never understand how the crew in the plane can think "Does this person really have the right ticket", when you mentioned your anxiety. My first trip to America we were flying with Delta (we thought KLM but apparently they hired Delta to do it). We didn't had any fancy first class or business seats, however we had the front row seat in the middle part of the plane. Not near the toilets, but they did separate our compartment from another there. We had a crap ton of leg space, I'm tall so that was really welcome. When we sat down one of the Stewards came, looked at us and asked us for our tickets. A bit weird I thought cause we showed the tickets several times now to get onboard and this was just economy class. She looked at it and shook her head, saying it was wrong. We had no clue what she was talking about, but she went to grab another steward, and the both of them looked at it, then said they would be back shortly.
Some male steward walked by and we asked what was going on, he was surprised when we told what just happened and would look into it for us. He returned shortly with our tickets and said we were in the right seats and that there was nothing to worry about. The female steward did not looked impressed at all at us.
This happened 8 years ago and I still am confused about what happened and why she said it was not okay and that we were in the wrong seats when we clearly were in the right ones. Back then you could still pick your seat 24 hours before departure, and we picked those as we were with the 3 of us so we could sit next to each other, we didn't even know it came with extra leg space nor did we have to pay extra for it, and it was economy class so really curious what that was about. And why the crew acted the way they did, so determined to say we were at the wrong seats O.o

I have flown Swiss and Lufthansa often. Under normal circumstances, Swiss showcases various Cantons with their food. For example, I flew Swiss first June 3, 2021. In addiction to their menu, I was also offered a specialty of the Canton of Tessin. They showcase a different region every month. As for ground service, I do agree Lufthansa’s is so much better. However, when arriving on a long haul flight to Zurich, you are met by a representative and driven to a special Immigration entrance. There your papers are checked. If you have a connection, you can go directly into the terminal, if you are staying in Zurich, you are then driven to direct Access to Baggage claim where a Swiss employee is waiting for your luggage. For whatever reason, they can’t avoid the repeat document check at the gate. When I arrive in some destinations in the US, there is sometimes a Representative waiting at the gate, but this depends on the disposition of the airport. For example Chicago won’t allow them to do anything more than wait by baggage claim. As I arrived on June 3, I had to stand in line for 2 1/2 hours for immigration. There was a Swiss employee frantically looking for me in the line. When I finished passport control, she was still waiting for me, guarding my two suitcases for me.

Dan, Swiss Air is owned by Lufthansa, so of course Lufthansa is going to make themselves look better than their subsidiaries. Whenever I fly to Europe, I always fly into Zurich, simply because that airport is probably the cleanest one I've ever experienced, it's not too big (Frankfurt anyone??!! where you need to run a marathon at the pace of the 100m just to get to a connecting flight), staff (airport and airline) are always friendly and helpful, good amenities and no over-crowding in the lounges.

Swiss First Class has been on my bucket list for so long as my choice for my first First Class flight (mainly because it’s cheaper hehe) and I was so nervous that I was gonna change my mind after watching Dan’s review. However, as a person who’s flown mostly Economy my entire life, I wouldn’t mind the lack of luxurious touch if it meant I could sit in a seat like that for 9 hours instead of the regular Economy seats!
Also, if I remember correctly, Swiss did have the private limo transfer pre-covid so I hope they bring it back along with the First Class Lounge (with private bedroom!) in Zurich.

Was wondering how Zurich Airport was going to serve international flights without the E gates concourse, since I remembered that the immigration hall is at the APM station, which you won't be going thru if you aren't going to the E gates. Guess I got my answer at 24:46 but I imagine not every country might find that arrangement secure enough, since I don't see much separation at the gate e.g. glass walls between checked & unchecked passengers

While I now hate to fly, my rule is to pack food ahead of time and get the cheapest window seat I can. (I certainly do not want to eat economy food.) I accept only bottled water. In other words, I respond to the terrible service in business class by flying economy only--when I have to fly. I zone out.
BTW, in my view, business and first class should provide enough space to make masks pointless (not that they are indicated at all for asymptomatic people). Air in an airplane is constantly replaced and HEPA filtered. This is why flying is quite safe: it's the aerosolized Covid that gets you and is not blocked by a surgical mask. Long flights without air treatment would be Covid incubators.

I bet that other products you mentioned in here are different and less luxurious than before the pandemic hit. Should not be in insult, just a reminder that we shouldn’t forget that the situation is not at all easy to handle, especially in wonky times where the situation is different in basically every country out there.
