Dan, completely with you on the LH service. Once while traveling in LH business class, I had to use the restroom. A flight attendant without even having the courtesy to ask for my seat number assumed I should be from the economy class and asked me not to use the business class toilet. That was borderline racist. LH really needs to train their crew on how to behave.

I flew on economy and every interaction I had with Lufthansa crew in the air or on the ground made me feel like a second class citizen. I was scoffed at every time I made a request and in the airport I was humiliatingly screamed at for momentarily delaying the boarding line while I waited for my father. Honestly one of my worst personal experiences ever. I vowed never to fly Lufthansa again until my united flight from malpensa to Newark got cancelled. I was rerouted through Munich and I had a similar experience with very cold and unwelcoming service. Only 1 flight attendant of a crew of at least 15 on that flight went out of her way to be welcoming and kind. However they only claimed 3.8 billion and started to pay back the first billion in November 2021. So they got nothing for free and the cost cutting is present everywhere. But also the pandemic is a great excuse to legitimate all the cost cuttings that have been planned in 2019 already and would have been implemented regardless of the pandemic.
And as you said: hospitality is a different thing. A question of the right mindset and personality more than a cost factor. Feeling welcome on board an LH plane is rare. Especially in business class which is highly neglected by LH. It's a farce (especially on narrowbody jets within Europe).

Although she was technically correct (the primary purpose of the cabin crew is to evacuate the cabin in less than 90s in case of an emergency. If this could be ensured in another way, we would be probably flying alone...), I can imagine her tone. As I have experienced commercial flights since the late 80's, I can confidently say that the overall experience - especially for European carriers and economy class - has been on a downward spiral since somewhere around the early 2000's. I can still remember the LH flight attendant frowning down on me when I asked for a 2nd glass of water and commenting that I drink too much water...I am certain that rising costs have played a role in this downgrade, however Asian and Middle Eastern carriers offer a superior service although their airplanes consume the same fuel and their ticket prices are more or less the same...

Boarding was terribly disorganized out of San Francisco. They had us lineup and then we stood for 55 minutes. 1 hour late leaving. My seat was broken and would not return to a seat position after laying flat. The other couple we were with had a broken seat and got moved early on. The flight attendant tried to get my seat to return to its upright position. She never spoke to me except to say “get back” as she kicked at the seat. Finally moved me to an unoccupied seat. The bed was uncomfortable and very old. Food was barely edible, but I had eaten great in the centurion lounge in SFO. Service was no existent. I was so thankful that my return trip was on Swiss. Edelweiss is Switzerlands holiday carrier and by no means a premium airline, but their product has beaten the "5* product" of Lufthansa in every aspect (seat, service, cathering, price..). Especially if the flight goes from their hub. I'm surprised about the English, since the crews all have to be able to speak good English. I'm even more often addressed in English first, even though I'm German. I don't think it's as bad that the seat on the 747-400 is outdated. The machines are older and would soon have been retired even without a pandemic. I find it much more surprising that these seats are used in almost the same way in the only five-year-old A350. But that should change with the next deliveries.

I always try to fly on Lufthansa when I need to cross the Atlantic, I'm also a frequent flyer with LH. Honestly there is way better seats up there, LH business seat is really old and uncomfortable, specially when travelling alone, the only time I got that bag as an ammenity kit was on a flight from IAH to FRA in premium economy on an A330. I have flew the same route in Business in a 747-8 and the service was okay, but nothing extraordinary (it was great if you compare it with United). However, when I flew LH from Panama or Bogota to FRA in Business on an A340-300 the service was great! even one time that I flew from IAH in their A330 it was also great, which really makes me think that service on board of LH is great when you fly on an 330 or A340 but when it comes to the 747 crews aren't what one would expect. Of course this might just be a coincidence that crews on the 747 are worst than in other types of aircraft, and of course this is no excuse for LH, the airline should have the same standards for all their crew, I just thought this was an interesting coincidence/fact or whatever you want to call it.

I think it could also be Covid/pandemic that could be causing the downfall of customer service in airline etc as everyone is fearful of this which is understandable. Airlines are experiencing short staff crisis which you can’t blame them as no one wants to work but relied on government funding to pay for their unemployment. I flew Lufthansa in February of this year and didn’t think it was too bad…yeah they didn’t give me water when I requested for it and customers on our flight were being very difficult as they continue to remove their masks and take their luggages down while airplane is prepping for landing & these two customers put their luggages blocking the aisle. It was infuriating and I felt so bad for the airline stewardess who kept coming back to warm these people. They would sleep and put their legs blocking the aisle

Dan - great video and fully agree. I used to fly LH on a weekly basis on intercontinental flights from 2009 to 2013 and I'm sad to see that not much has changed. The food looks the same, my experience with the crew was more often in line with your video than not, and the entertainment system still looks very similar (few more options than in those days). LH has upgraded its business class seats, but honestly not by a lot. The major difference is that they can be made into a flat bed now, which previously wasn't an option. Oh and speaking German doesn't make it more enjoyable. I haven't flown with them in 8+ years and don't intend to anytime soon. I still rather put in a transfer in DXB for example than fly with the European airlines direct (I live in Asia).

Personally, I just take Singapore airlines for long haul flights as much as possible. first because it's my national carrier, but mostly coz the service is pretty good, even in economy. the only other airlines i'll trust for consistent good service are mainly the asian carriers - Eva, Japan. seems to have a more consistent service mentality than US or european airlines

One of the trips had rude and unfriendly staff on, and I remember feeling very ripped off by that. The first leg of the trip the staff were amazing, but then they changed and put new staff on in Singapore, and the different between how friendly they were was huge.

    • @oOPrettywinxOo
      @oOPrettywinxOo 2 года назад +4

To be fair that happens on LH flights too, at least if they're not flights chartered by tourist agencies. Normally they announce that all staff speaks English and German, and then they specifically name the staff that also speaks the language of the destination country (in my case that was Japan), so that by reading their name tags, you would know whom to talk to if you know neither English nor German.
I was actually surprised that eg on many East Asian Airlines I have been on, they usually only speak English and their native language. They don't bother to hire staff that also speaks German, or French, or you name it, whatever the destination country is. That was always something that did set Lufthansa apart from other airlines for me - they always have at least one person who is fluent in that third language in my experience. Granted my last experience with Lufthansa was in 2019, and I hear the bad stuff Dan describes in this video are a recent development.
Back in 2019 the captain even had humor...yes...a German with humor! When we were waiting in parking and still nothing had happened for 40 minutes even after our scheduled departure time, he came on and went "Ladies and Gentlemen, I bet you're wondering what we're still doing here. Trust me, I was wondering the same thing until just now. Turns out we're missing 64 of our passengers due to delayed transit flights because of a bad storm over mid-Germany. The next flight to Hongkong isn't until tomorrow so it has been decided we wait for them. So, get yourselves comfortable I guess, let our crew get you a drink, cause unfortunately, this might take a while longer."🤣

    Good morning from Germany, Dan!
I know that you had been a hugh Lufthansa fan ever since!
Many thanks for this honestly done evaluation. It is really a shame seeing this and acknowledges me in not wasting money or miles (that I don´t have) for just a few hours of bad service, third class meals and privacy lacking seats. And the thing is that it will take some further years until each plane will be outfitted with the new business class. The conversion even hasn´t startet yet.
Instead of paying so much for business class flights, it motivates me in investing my hard earned money respectively these thousands of euros in some luxurious hotels where I am staying for a few days or a week or so.
I think that you are the most honest airline checker in the industry!
    Kind regards
    Pascal

I've flown only once in LH business class and I have to say that my experience was totally opposite. I received clearly more attention than other passengers around me, one crew member took care of me all the time and regularly came to ask me if I needed anything, is the flight going well, always smiling and with very warm attitude that left a good feeling. I received extra dessert, and after the flight the flight attendant came to ask me how was the flight, did I like it, and to thank me for flying LH and welcome me back. I was thinking do they think I am some celebrity or something, I was a bit baffled by this extra attention which I have never received before on any flight. I actually thought this is just the standard in LH, and I'm now very surprised to learn especially from other comments that it is not so by far. Maybe I was flying there on a good day or something.

It seems like Lufthansa puts all of their effort into their First Class product while virtually ignoring Business Class. As many other airlines eschew First Class entirely and instead focus on offering a more premium Business Class experience, while other airlines still aim for quality Business Class and out-of-this-world First Class, Lufthansa seems like an odd outlier.

I recall my last LH flight - years ago meanwhile- from Ord to Muc in First Class, where the crew actually was too busy chatting and almost forgot to serve dinner. I running gag in my frequent flyer household is, that Lufthansa is the American Airlines of Europe. I live in Dubai, yes that makes me a spoiled passenger, but I strongly believe that for the amount of money LH charges, there should be at least some decent service, but they dissapoint mostly with underperforming.... I just experienced the 747-400 Business class about a month ago. The food was great for me. The steak, bread, fruits...all were delicious and fresh. But ya, the seat was tight. I had the window seat and I had to ask my seat neighbor to move when I needed to use the bathroom... not what I had expected from a business class seat. And the button to call the attendant was broken. Why did I need to call? They deemed all the lights short after we finished the meal. I couldn't get out of my seat because the food tray was still sitting on my table. I ended up putting them down on the foot stool thing until they came by.
And it felt unhygienic to reuse the same headphone the previous passenger used. About half way into the flight, I learned the headphone cover was inside the amenity kit.

Great review and yes unfortunate you had to endure such poor service in what is touted as 5 Star. I too was a Lufthansa fanboy, but something has changed and not for the better. No paying customer should have that poor of service, regardless of if you were in economy, but certainly not business class. The last time I flew Lufthansa business class was back in October of 2021 during the Pandemic. The service was actually quite good, but you are right about one thing.
