It's dying because people aren't writing songs with WORDS. I'm sorry, but guitar is best applied as a songwriting tool (same as piano). We have a generation of kids who are getting less and less by way of voices which actually can speak to them directly in a socially relevant way. While I love virtuoso techniques, even EVH had SINGERS in his band. I'm sorry, but this always feels alien to me. I've been a guitarist for 24 years, and a songwriter the entire time. I'm also trained audio engineer who worked for top 40 engineers, etc. too. I just feel that technique is a means to an end. Songwriting should be the goal (as you said). I totally agree with your video 100%. i just hope you're not shutting down your channel now that you're making this shift. =)

@@CaryMillerOfficial I hear ya. It has turned into gigantic talent show. Just a bunch of guitar players trying to sweep pick faster than everyone else. And to top it all off they all use the exact same gear. So everyones sound is the exact same too. Theres nobody that sticks out that has their own sound. Yeah they're uber talented, but equally lifeless. It's not downloading that killed music. We had limewire and Napster and were able to steal music well before music went down the shitter...the real reason is theres just nothing good that anyone wants to hear, so why would they buy it. The average joe doesnt care that you can sweep pick at 1000 beats per second. Take pantera "walk" the song is one of the most iconic badass metal songs of all time...and is only 3 friggin notes and written by the greatest guitar player ever. If you're a guitar player Dime is in your top 3. Yet everyone misses what he was doing the whole time...just cuz you can doesnt mean you should. Once this happens I guarantee you see money in music again

I'm not planning on quitting guitar, but I do understand the feeling of pressure to play fast, especially being involved in RUclips as a guitar teacher. Yes, it does seem that guitar playing has turned into a giant pissing contest, and guitarist/musicians should focus on feeling rather that speed, and listen to all kinds of different music, not just guitar songs. What's the point of practicing shredding for years and years just to play notes that no one can hear. As far as the decline of guitar playing goes, maybe people are getting discouraged by all the speed guitar playing they see on social media.

Everytime I'm hearing this, I always think of specific techniques to do when playing, i.e. vibrato. You can start a melody or a solo the way you like, but I think that a nice vibrato is just a perfect way to kick the solo in.
Therefore, the thought alone of trying an awesome technique or compositional device should be enough to make you wanna fall in love with your instrument again.

For example in the late 80s guitar lead wanking got so excessive that it became a parody of itself; then guitar in the 90s became quite stripped down for an entire decade. I just happened upon your page and watched a few of your videos. And this happens to one of the best videos EVER!!! I went to college back in the early '90s and took music classes and we had to learn music theory. And I could never really get the general idea behind it because we had to play everything on the piano. And being a stubborn youth I only was open to learning it by playing it on the guitar. Watching your Bach vs videos and REALLY listening to what your saying in this video finally clicked. Music should be more about how you feel and the composition and expanding your writing abilities. I am not a Shedder. But I do like to write songs. Watching this video has opened my eyes and ears to exploring new ways of writing and relearning music theory. Thank you.

you've got so much great advice. Been working on my self-confidence for a while now and I found that I am over-thinking music-making, and just throwing my feels and intuition out of the window. My lack of self-esteem made me totally buy into this novelty-craze that is this technique-fetish. I tried and tried and tried practicing playing super fast and the most ridiculous arpeggios but I ended up forcing novelty. My core strength is my use of intervals thanks to ear training. My best songs are still the simplest. Ironically, I discovered Tesseract's Altered State a few weeks ago and it has become one of my top 5 fav albums. I am absolutely in love with it. There is no shred whatsoever on the album. The incredibly immersive feels and the fact that the feels match with my own so much made me do a 180 real quick. Also what helps is my current co-composer who is great friend. His chops are Adam Jones level at best but in spite of this he comes up with so many cool rhythmic figures and has great taste in sound design. And we're writing kick ass non-shred prog with all kinds of feels.

2:34 Ecactly! Neither guitar playing nor music in general is a competition. I've never been that kind of musician who wants to "out-play" other guitarists etc. I also never understood how playing super fast or complicated stuff makes one a better player. If you can play such things - good for you, awesome.
It has to have a appeal to your audience, or at the very least to yourself. If it sounds good, it's good. Simple as that. I don't mind if you write complicated stuff or rather easy-to-play songs/compositions. Just keep in mind that it's about the vibes/emotional aspects the music brings up, and staying true to yourself.
With that being said, great video as usual! Keep it up, bro! 🤘🏼

    - This is a great question I believe it is worth asking oneself from time to time. To shred to impress or to shred to convey a particular emotion or feel. That may be the key. Like for example, when I hear a guy like Ben Monder shred, not only he really shreds with dexterity and precision but, he builds his music / solos towards that "moment of laser-like precision" where he shreds. The fact someone HAS to say these things depresses me to an all time low. I love guitar, I absolutely love the instrument. I love hearing it, I love playing it, I love seeing how people play the beautiful instrument and make even more beautiful music with the instrument. If the guitar dies then we might as well say a major, MAJOR, like 99.9% of music will die with it. I don’t care if I’m bad at guitar, good at it, or if someone else is bad or good at it. It’s the most creative, beautiful, and fun instrument. Long live guitar

Lately we see DJs with computers become popular. There still are guitarists and there still are pianists. These instruments are just a less popular choice among youngsters. I actually stopped playing guitar for about 7 years and concentrated on the sitar and the dilruba. The guitar came back to me; but it was new again, and I heard it with a new perspective. In recent years, I've put time into learning orchestration.
I'm glad I walked away from guitar for a while. I burned out on it. And you hit the nail on the head with the whole shred thing. I can't stand to listen to it. It means nothing.
This reminds me of back in '79 when I had 13th row center for Andres Segovia. He could play fast. But that was irrelevant. Every phrase was poetry, every note was a work of art. I was in tears. Or the time I saw Ravi Shankar for the first time. At one point, he played one note; and it was the most perfectly executed musical note I ever heard. I can still hear it.
If I can play one note with that same level of beauty and sublimity, mine will not have been a wasted life.

Guitar is not dying, it smells just a little funny. Fake shredders came, and they will go soon enough. You hit it right on the spot with everything you mentioned. Back in 1972 when I bought my first guitar, it was all over tone. We judged fellow guitarists by the sound they could produce with given equipment (i.e. cheap japanese copies and italian tube amps with some sort of speakers in there). Speed was not important, since we thought Peter Green's tempo in "Albatros" was quite normal (ok, Alvin Lee being the exception from the rule). The Spandex-Era changed everything, but not for me. I still love guitarists who can sing on their instrument, no matter how slow it is.

nice to see you have a keyboard. it is easy to lay down ANY 3-note chord, then just move 1 or 2 fingers and check out the new chord. stay in the key and after a little poking around you can assemble a new chord progression. that is a big part of my composition and for sure, live ambient sets. There is so much delay and tails etc, many notes are in the haze, so I just stay in key. Bridges can be made from the relative minor or major and use all the same notes still. those are my tricks since I am not much of a shredmeister. The guitar is great to match to a song because you just move the form to transpose

It used to be a race to who could groove the hardest or play the fastest double kick but now it’s even more compartmentalized with the instrument fully removed from even a band. I think one of the problems is kids are now able to grow up hearing Only deathmetal or insane tech and never have enjoyed Pink Floyd or Led Zepplin or Frank Zappa and experience the musical compostionally experience and THEN bring that back to creating said deathmetal or tech. The soul is gone, we gotta bring back the soul. Funny you don’t see anyone trying to shred like Dimebag, because it was the ultimate fusion of shred and Soul. I think everyone needs a history lesson mixed with their theory lesson. Obi Wan Sensai Shredmaster! You should do more Instagram live sessions, the kids need you haha!

First of all, I've been watching your videos for a couple of months and I really like them. I found very interesting all your explanations about the way J.S. Bach used to write, to compose pieces of music and the way it's possible to apply to the guitar. Great job!!!
Now, as far as shredding guitar is concerned, I don't really know to think about!!
Younger, I really was a big fan of fast shredding guitar but as years went by, it's something that really started to bore me, to get on my nerves. Each time I see all those guys on you.tube trying to play as fast as possible, I think : "But what the hell are they trying to do??. It's not only dead boring but they also literally kill the music, neither more, nor less.
Young musicians have to understand that guitar and generally speaking, music is not a race, is not a competition, it's not about playing fast!!! Music is above all based on melody, feelings, emotion, atmosphere, chords, variations (crescendo/decrescendo,...) and some of them tend to forget it.
Guitar players such as Gary Moore, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tony Iommi, David Gilmour, Slash, Brian May,...are not considered as shredders and when I listen back to some of their records, in less than 10 seconds, they are still able to give me goose bumps and I could say the same thing about some jazz, flamenco guitarists,...
Speed can be from time to time a good "tool" but must be judiciously, wisely used, otherwise, it can quickly become some kind of sickening cacophony.
