Yeah me too. Mainly cause I don't like playing/noodling loudly in public. It's tough to try out an amp with a guitar and have it be quiet. You don't want to "that guy" at guitar center who plays way too loud. I believe in not intruding on people's ears.
Great stuff. One inaccuracy though: I doubt an employee would mock a beginner. Being guitar lovers, we are always happy seeing new people wanting to learn the instrument.
Felt the same way when I was in a GC playing Cannibal Corpse and Nevermore trying out some guitars, while some older dude was busting out Randy Rhoads style licks and riffs like it was no one’s business. I feel his playing was more welcome in the store.
@@coffinfeeder7732 I think that has a lot to do with it. I don't feel like I'm shy as in embarrassed, but rather I'm trying to be courteous. Yea it's weird isn't it..... I played over 30 years.... and can still feel sometimes "low confidence" in the guitar shop lol.... I guess its something we do mostly on our own.... hence being nervous around other skilled or even beginner players can be nerve wracking.... and fingers become jelly 😂....
Love to see a video about the 10 types of guitar store staff. There’s the confidence destroyer, who demoes his own skill instead of the instrument, then the too busy dude who will get to you when they’ve finished inventorying the picks, or the simply too cool to speak to customers dude who is talking to the other cool store staff and ignoring you, the one who can’t stop saying “dude” or “bro” the condescending git who starts a conversation with barely concealed contempt for your musical choices. List goes on 😂
Lemme ask you something, has this happened to you? As either rhythm or lead guitarist have you ever been playing and feel your confidence getting higher for whatever reason (trust me it happens especially when try something new) some asshole two amps away gears up and cranks that bitch just enough to be slightly louder than you and begins to play faster and flashier as if to taunt you, AND IT WORKS. (Notice how I didn't use the word better)
@@jamie6506 Idk man, but remember I used the word flash and not better, because (in my opinion at least) I'll take rhythm or even a simple solo over shredding any day (before anyone feels like pulling someone like Dimebag outta their ass and "call me out" His best solos are much simple in comparison to some modern guitarists that I've come across in these shops, don't ask me to name em because I didn't take the time to memorize something I didn't enjoy)

I still wish I could go back and thank him.
When i bought was buying my bass i was too shy to play them and some guy offered to "play it so i could hear it from a listeners perspective", I asked him to play certain songs on two or three different bass so i could hear them. He really saved me
Man I feel that. For the love of god, surfing with the alien etc, disappears and I only just remember how to play enter sandman or smoke on the water 😂
I'm the dad that loves metal and supporting his 10 year old son in his quest to become a guitar lord. So I go into the store and listen to everything the dudes behind the counter tell me because the only musical history I have was playing drums in concert band and singing in a hard core punk band during the 90s. I already understand I know nothing... but I love everything.
I wish I had a dollar for every time I walked into a guitar store and had the honor of seeing the next up and coming Jake E. Lee trying out a Gibson or Fender, and then never seeing them again.
"The Pick Thief" doesn't actually exist. What you're referring to are the Pick Goblins. They can't be seen because they instantly disappear when you look at them, and their entire purpose in life is to hoard as many picks as possible. Many a guitarist has known the plague that is the Pick Goblins, and the only way to prevent them from stealing all your picks is _to buy more picks._
I’ve got a friend in his 40s that is an incredible musician that used to play Go-go music in a band in DC back in the day. He personally doesn’t own a single instrument, but plays keyboards, bass, and drums equally well. He also plays completely by ear. He has no idea what notes he’s playing but everything he plays at the very least sounds like it’s perfect. I asked him how he keeps his skills up if he doesn’t own an instrument, and he said he stops at the Guitar Center that’s a few blocks away a couple of times a week and they let him play whatever he wants for as long as he wants. I ended up going there with him once one evening when we got off work early. We walk in the store, and the entire staff lit up the second he walked in. One guy said “Hey Mark, come check this out!” and they had a vintage Fender electric piano someone had brought in to sell on consignment. Mark walks over and starts ripping all these Ray Charles tunes out of it, and sounds completely FANTASTIC!! He’s playing for about an hour straight, and everyone in the store has come over to watch and listen to him play. I’m talking at least 30 people. Eventually one woman comes over and gives him her card and asks if she can book him to play at a wine tasting party she’s having at her place. He told her he didn’t own a keyboard, and she immediately asked if she could rent the Fender he was playing. They said they couldn’t rent that one, but they had another one very similar to it she could rent. Mark was like “Yeah, I’ve played that one a bunch of times…” Apparently he got booked out of that store 2 a month or so and used their rental a bunch of times. She asked him if he knew some R&B tune I don’t remember the name of, and he just played it, never having played it before in his entire life. Later on I asked him how he did that, and he going on about he pretty much has a photograph memory for music, and he sees the notes being played as a color in his head, and he knows where that color lives on the keyboard or on the neck of a bass and just goes to it. It was pretty cool to see.
My father played guitar all his adult life (I was his best student) I took him to a guitar store when he was in his late 80s and, true to form, he sat down and wanted to try a few of the axes…I put an ES 335 in his hands and he started playing standards in his Jazzy chord & melody style; head down & oblivious to the crowd gathering around him many of whom probably never heard anyone play like that in such an informal setting; quite a departure from the usual guy making noise as he butchered Whole Lotta Love on the fluorescent green Ibanez; everyone in the shop exploded in applause after he hit his last major 7th glissando; he was pleasantly surprised & humble but did compare the Gibson negatively to his beloved ‘65 Epiphone Casino which is now mine (dad played ‘til he passed @ age 95)

I probably took "shy guitar" guy to the another level. I'd researched the crap out of various guitar models online, watch RUclipss, etc. Then go to the store and play one tab riff and one chord riff. If I didn't like it, I'd go home and repeat the process until I found one that did what I expected both in sound and comfort. Then I'd ask store to check out, inquire about the additional cost for guitar case, and go on my way. The entire experience would be In an out within 15 min. Being in stores like this around actual good guitarists can be intimidating. So I try to go in and out as quickly as possible. Exactly what I did with my most recent guitar purchase. I have not been back for about 5 years since the guitar still sounds great and is decently maintained.
Amen, I didn't know anything about amps and trusted the wizards tending the shop to make the string music thingy work, when I bought one the guy told me I could do that and I felt like such an idiot.
3:13 "One Riff Guy" cracked me up. I worked in a guitar shop for a short while in the early 90's and pretty much every kid that picked up a guitar would play that riff over and over again. I've only recently gotten to the point where I can actually listen to the song. You missed the "I can get that cheaper online guy"
@@Rogeramirez LOL...I thought that was just a joke from the "Wayne's World" movie. I don't think I heard that song at all when I worked at the guitar shop, but I felt like putting one up for "Enter Sandman."

@@SamOwenI I agree. I try not to be that guy...or any of them for that matter, but I've probably been guilty of all...except the dude with no respect. I'm very careful in a guitar shop. Usually if it's not far off I'll get it just because of the convenience of it being right there.
@@moistressVT I think what made Enter Sandman worse was the fact that it's really not that complicated of a riff so most anyone could learn it, so it didn't matter if they were new at playing or not. I'm sure many early 90s metal fans would admit that's the first riff they learned to play.

Hillarious video. I remember stores where banners on the wall quoted "No Stairway to heaven, No Smoke on the Water" and more. I walked into a specialized Bass Guitar Store in Frankfurt once, just to see what they caried. Two guys were having a Blues session and the staff clearly had a difficult time. They had a Status Bass on display with the usual Traee Elliot Stack sitting right beside it. Asked if I could have a go with the Status, to which they happily agreed. Some Mark King Lines later the Blues Session was over. Staff was very happy and me as well, having been able to at least have a go with the Bass of my dreams. 😀

Steve B that's not what this is, Steve. It's a new player who's about to learn the hard way that 1.) you won't play and sound like your influences by having a carbon copy of their rig 2.) trying that is lame as shit, and 3.) the gear costs a lot more than the money their parents gave them.

The guy working at the store would shred, then hand it off to the customer. This happened in every store I went into. So I opened my own store.

WELL DONE, Jared!; You hold that guitar like a real PRO. You should hove been at the Brass Ring years ago, when Delaney and Bonnie were preforming there. I was working with Ben Benay on some originals arrangements; I played a few melodies for him on violin, and he knew I was teaching myself guitar; He said he wanted to show me something that the "guitarists like to use to impress the girls' with!" Yeah me too. Mainly cause I don't like playing/noodling loudly in public. It's tough to try out an amp with a guitar and have it be quiet. You don't want to "that guy" at guitar center who plays way too loud. I believe in not intruding on people's ears.

Been playing for 15 years. Have no stage fright or issues playing shows, but at the guitar shop I'm still feel like the "shy beginner"
Marinko The_Uncanny67th It happens quite often. Trumpet players like to pull that one, too. Why are people like this?

No, since this is my 582nd time watching this video I’ve gotten used to it
I used to have a stagg Les Paul copy and when I was practicing with it one day I put it on my guitar stand and it fell down splitting the neck in 2
I’ve got a friend in his 40s that is an incredible musician that used to play Go-go music in a band in DC back in the day.
Did she sleep with him too?

I probably took "shy guitar" guy to the another level. I'd researched the crap out of various guitar models online, watch RUclipss, etc. Then go to the store and play one tab riff and one chord riff. If I didn't like it, I'd go home and repeat the process until I found one that did what I expected both in sound and comfort. Being in stores like this around actual good guitarists can be intimidating. So I try to go in and out as quickly as possible. Exactly what I did with my most recent guitar purchase. Im the shy beginner and when the assistant stares at me I get intimidated and I end up buying whatever and comes home regretting what I bought and begging my parents to buy another guitar since I didn't like the first one I bought. Fok
i've never related something like this on such a spiritual level
I wish i had that kind of money
@@MrSmart199 well my parents wouldn't actually buy me another one..there are good cheap guitars though
Isn't it possible to give it back?
You need to grow a backbone
3:30 “two for the price of seven” lmao what a good deal
Ikr😂😂😂
SEVEN HUNDRED THOUSAND!!!
The pedal enthusiast just wrote a Pink Floyd song.
Very true.
Man some pink floyd guitar solos are some of the most technical solos ever made back then
Haha charade you are
or u2
Another disotion before the delay in the wall
I knew a guy who was all these guys combined. And yes, he was loud and shy at the same time. One of the greatest mysteries of my existence.
*has played every day and practiced guitar for 5 years*
I'm the shy beginner whenever someone asks me to play
same here i hate when people ask me to play them something i draw a blank and get nervous but i love playing so it sucks
weoweearth Same here dude. 5 hot girls at a party asked if could play something for them. I was like shit i can't even play when my best friend ask me.
*or I play the most complicated piece I know in a hushed tone*
Megan I play almost everyday and have been playing for 7 years and I'm the shy beginner
Lol that moment you show up in front of like 100 people thinking it'll be fine and you'll think of things to play, only to find out you really can't play much and are actually not very good at all...yeah it's just me right? :$
What happened to playing Stairway to Heaven and Smoke on the Water.
“yea i can play guitar”
Access was denied
Its forbidden
STAIRWAY DENIED
No stairway it’s forbidden
I lost it when he started playing "that one riff" on the banjo 😂3:43
Enter sandman by Metallica
Arthur Morgan I think everyone knows that riff my guy
Josh Wilkerson Lmaoooo likewise
me too , it was really funny
Try this one:
ruclips.net/video/3JFb_aOn6rc/видео.html&ab_channel=SteveSeagulls
This has nothing to do with the video but i'm not a native english speaker and i remember watching this video years ago and not even understanding half of it and now everything's clear to me, it's so satisfying
Woo!!!! Progress!!!
Shy beginner hits me way too hard even thought I have played for years
Sound Of Notes I agree! I've been playing 3 chord Monte Punk Rock for 30 years but I still feel a nube every time I go to an instrument shop.
Sound Of Notes lol the feels even though im just a kid.
The “Back in the Day” guy:
“Yeah, back in 86’ I got sick when Metallica was doing their bassist tryouts, but congrats to Jason anyway”
I know what you mean man, when Ozzy was looking for a new guitar player back in 87 in came down to ZAKK and me. I actually beat ZAKK in the head cutting dual, but Sharon liked ZAKK's hair better so he got the gig.
"Yeah, I tried out, but I got the feeling I was 'too good,' so I, Les Claypool, started the band Primus."
i ate a guitar
3:43 lol at the one riff guy only knowing how to play one riff, but he took the time to learn it on the banjo which is in a complete different tunning
the three middle strings are just the same as the ones on guitar
And the ukulele, too.
I never held a guitar in my life and yet 0:58 made my eye twitch💀
I’m always self-conscious when I go into a guitar store just because I don’t want to be *that guy*
GamingToMyAbilities Exactly!
Trust me, you're not. THAT guy knows that he's THAT guy and he doesn't care.
"the watch me shred" guy, is also known as "does he know any chords?" guy
emma duncan. That’s right. Rhythm Guitarists Rise Up
Chords are for the 2nd guitarist in the band, the one that never gets laid.
Will Walters do you mean rhythm guitarists? And wdym they don’t get laid? Lmao Motley Crue? Steel Panther, Bruv Metallica?! There were ALoT of Rhythm guitarists that got pus all the time.
I'm not a guitarist but Jesus Christ 0:58 actually hurt me.
No Wonder Austin Said "Get The **** Out!"
Yeah
Dude knowing the worth of guitars and caring for instruments... it hurts me so much when a guitar, specifically, gets hurt bro. I love playing and it HURTS
@@_unknown0fficial_750 I just hope it was broken anyway or something. It still gives me nightmares.
0:59
Dropping the guitar hurt my entire body and the deepest part of my soul
OW
I've been playing 10 years and I'm still the shy beginner
TheJarhead133 I feel you
TheJarhead133 samee
I’m not a beginner, but I’m still shy and have bad anxiety
CMANIAC1 need scales to shred brother
Ditto
You're missing that one guy that walks in and has like a list of all the gear their idol uses and wants all of it verbatim
slizzybeans xo I hate that fucking guy, seriously I get at least 1 of them every other day.
well in defense of the guy that's done his homework, almost every guitar source tells newbies to do their homework first so they know what strings, pups, tuners ECT that they need for their guitar before they go in. that being said my gc has awesome people who I enjoy getting opinions from.
Steve B that's not what this is, Steve. It's a new player who's about to learn the hard way that 1.) you won't play and sound like your influences by having a carbon copy of their rig 2.) trying that is lame as shit, and 3.) the gear costs a lot more than the money their parents gave them.
Shit...
Somethings a little off
Oh I know. The workers care
For real
XD
🤣🤣🤣🤣
oof
*two for the price of seven*
I work at a used and rare bookstore and SO much of this transfers over. The amount of people who go straight to the antique leather-bound books and start grabbing them when there’s clearly a sight saying they range from $100-$3000…. Unless you are seriously considering on spending the money for a product: Do. Not. Touch.
The Shy beginner is so on point. When I was just starting and literally knew nothing at all yet, the guitar center employee cranked up the amp loud when I was trying out guitars for the very first time in my life 😂
Oh_My_ Pickles ikr it’s like an anitiation basically
Happened to me too, but it was on drums. I sit down to mess around, not knowing anything about how to actually sound good, and some lady walks up with her kid and was like “watch this honey, he’ll show you how it’s done!” It was very awkward. Lol
Fifteen years of playing and still cant play in a guitar store.
@@AidanMillward Me too. 20 yrs.
I know, but with me the store was with no customers and so all the employees came to me and wanted watch me and I was just starting to learn how to play 😂
You missed the "ALWAYS HAVE TO PLAY SWEET CHILD OF MINE" and the "GUITARS WERE MADE FOR JAZZ MUSIC" people.
and the "ALWAYS HAVE TO PLAY STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN"
yeah can't stand for this jazz erasure.
3:31 “2 for the price of 7”
that’s a deal you can’t beat😂
Guitar Centre cant compete
Very often, the shred guy and the loud guy are the same dudes.
Me whenever I go to a guitar store:
Clerk: “do you need any help?”
Me: “NO” [leaves the place walking fast]
that one.. that one hurt to read.. is too close for comfort still a thing?
Tanyami I think it is
@@tan-yami I guess
My girlfriend and I play a game, before we go in,we pick numbers on how many times I get asked if I need any help
I'm like "the shy beginner" type even though I'm not a beginner 😂 I can't play with people around me
Same. It's not like I am really going to impress anyone.
same
Same.
@@jimscobie6646 yep same
@@jimscobie6646 well i take that back i actually did impress this one girl at school
I was waiting for Smells Like Teen Spirit and I was not disappointed.
Same
I was waiting for Smoke on the Water lmao
i love smells like teen spirit
@Kurt Cobain It is a bit overplayed, but that doesn't mean it's a bad song :)
I’ve been playing for 30 years and at times I’m still the shy beginner!
