The worst part is when you have experience playing music and you have melodies in your head- but you have no idea how to actually transpose the notes in your head into the notes on the instrument. That's the barrier I keep butting up against.
Thank you so much for addressing the transitions between sections that seems to be one of the most neglected aspects in a lot of the stuff I've been watching and it's something that I really struggle with so, thank you!
Hey man, felt like saying that your videos are a big inspiration for me to keep learning the guitar. You know your shit and are hilarious. Keep shredding :)
Man I gotta say, I really like you approach to this guitar shred thing. I have hundreds of hours practicing technique and going nowhere. I'm gonna use this to get inspired and finally do something creative. Thanks for all the inspiration
Dude, your videos are getting better and better. Not just the content (which is extremely relevant and needed), but the editing and humor are going to keep people watching. I'm betting your sub count is going to explode soon.
You know your stuff shred, recently subscribed, love the channel content, its actually useful unlike a lot of other things I watch, Im guilty of practicing techniques for too long so this made total sense, you should release a full step by step theory course covering everything, as you seem to know it all and I'm sure there's plenty of us that would be interested.
Bookmarked this for whenever I get stuck with writing. This helped me write some nasty riffs I wouldn't have made on my own. From the bowels of my intestines, thank you!
I love how much you incorporate music theory into shredding and how approachable you make the topic! I would love to see a similar video to this one but focused on improvisation over chords and your approaches to it. Especially interested in how you chose to use "triads", "arpeggios" and scales, also how do you choose your leading notes and last notes when going from one chord to another. Love your content and your energy! keep it up! you are awesome!
I'm a new subscriber .. I'm 41 years of age .. got a degree in music 20 years ago and been teaching guitar since then also piano for 5 or 6 years .. a huge metal fan and love to compose as well.
2:44 i remember i watched this video over a decade ago....still waiting for them keys awesome video man . alot of these techniques i actually use while composing , but awesome , i feel like iv'e learned a thing or 2 :)
This really resonates with me dude really agree about the technique/concept limitation to build something around. Also your track at the end sounds very One Winged Angel/Final Fantasy in general good stuff
That neoclassical lick outlining the chords reminding me of the intro section of "Cthulhu Dawn" by none other than that filthy cradle lol Cradle of Filth, love that sound. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🔥 hey Shred, im a new Patreon btw muahahaha 👹
Dorian is my absolute favor mode to write in. Im also glad you mentioned rhythm. As a guitarist, its easy to focus too much on harmony and melody and not enough on interesting rhythms
Ive been play guitar for 12 year steve via and Guthrie Govan Vernon Reid and Jeff skunk Baxter we're all my guitar teachers I went to a guitar Academy in Saratoga Springs known as via Academy number one you sure describing concept that great guitar heros describe to me all those years ago when I was 17 year old. thank you for reminding me of everything I love about guitar and music this was a masterpiece and you deserve recognition. Its was inspiring to see an artist plays instrument you're talented !
"They didn't practice Sweep picking for 10hrs/day, they practiced composing for 10hrs/day" (Shred [Master Scott]) I love you. I had this fucking problem for the first 3 years of my playing that I was centered around inventing new techniques, the emissions I wrote from grueling time and inspiration lasted maybe a month before I wiped them off my cock. Just a year ago I decided to care a LOT less about inventing techniques and I have a full song from that period that I still enjoy playing almost daily, and only 2 weeks ago I wrote a song (with newly learned singing) that I might keep till I'm in my 40s
Awesome lesson like always Master !!! I think a good video lesson that could be really useful for all of us would be on how to setup the metronome for recording, in my head I was counting on your final composition a 4/4 maybe around 70 BPM? But you played fast and slow, that was very nice, could be helpful for when we start recording the bass a backup guitars. Thanks Scott for the great lessons, have a wonderful day Brother.
I'm at 2:02 in the video. Decided to pick up my acoustic to follow along. Realized that it's tuned in DADADD because I'd been trying to make it sound like a sitar. Since I had two octaves of power chords to pedal on in the bottom 4 strings, I thought I'll let my ears and feelings do the decision making and started playing a random scale on the high D strings. Came up with a tune that seemed to be on the D F F# G A B C# D scale, which felt oddly celebratory. Turns out I just reinvented what they call the Shoolini scale here in South India in the carnatic classical music tradition. Thanks to your video I already feel inspired to noddle more! Now I need to watch the rest of the video 😁 Edit: In hindsight nothing you said in the video had anything to do with what I just noodled. But hey, inspiration can come from ANYWHERE 😁
I love what you do and how you do it and you're a very great teacher. You freaking shred man! But I'm gonna do it my style, with my own rules. I have basic knowledge of theory, nice amount of practice so I'm not thinking about all that mumbo jumbo stuff, I'm just feeling it. Yeaah...Maybe I'm just using it as an excuse, because I can't shred like you, Prince of hell
awesome video man! i discovered your channel yesterday and im glad i did, u put out awesome content! btw, ive noticed that quartal harmonies are also common in japanese piano songs, like the soundtrack to Spirited Away
Loved the phrase about composers back then. The concept about training for creating music is amazing, IMHO. I myself always loved music, but couldn't quite get familiarized with an instrument for several reasons. But I never gave up, because I had a feeling musicality can be expressed in many ways. You can feel musicality by ear or playing something. Nevertheless, not only feel, but you can always think about musicality and analyze stuff with the proper mindset to create new stuff, just like philosophy. Great exemples, great video and great song! Cheers \,,/
That G dorian riff with the descending chromatic transition with the hesitation on the last two notes was the kicker that made me immediately throw money at you. Never heard anything like that.
You're addressing some really interesting and much needed concerns. I recently came across your channel, caught myself coming back. You just got yourself another subscriber. I appreciate what your doing.
Great summary of very useful techniques for composing, O´Diabolical Master. Here´s a curveball: Blending metal with folk,- here in Europe it´s been a style for the past twenty years,- Celtic metal from Swiss Eluveitie (listen to Rebirth and Thousandfold for examples), Balkan metal in odd meters( based on the meters of their traditional folk songs: Balkan Gypsy etc- Jinjer-Pisces and Teacher Teacher are good.places to start), Viking metal with the melodic riffing from the likes of Tyr ( Faroe Islands) and Kati Ran - Suurin (Dutch/Norwegian/ Finnish,- as Metal as it gets and not a distorted guitar in sight!). The question becomes: Song structures: II-V-I, I-V-VI-IV, I-IV-V,- how to use standard structues for melodic metal writing blended with the characteristics of, say, US Folk music,- ie Bluegrass Metal? Country Metal? Blues Metal?,- or are they already covered through Southern Rock and Dark Country? And finally: How to make all of that diabolical? ( Love living in the van btw.- miss the wife though...)

The secret to composing is to imagine a good song in your head, and then write it down.
Isn't that easy when you imagine something like Steve Vai + Meshuggah + Steven Wilson thing
@@Cestariarts The second secret to composing is to imagine a good song, but one that isn't hard to write down, and then write it down.
