The fact that PSA deems them altered without any explanation why and then has the gall to keep $300 for doing absolutely nothing is the reason I will never send any card their way. Disgusting.
I just had to pay $1k for an sgc 8.5 jordan that I tried to resubmit through PSA. It came back altered. They charged me $1k and didn’t tell me how it was altered and won’t even return my calls.

@@markdavey2107 I agree actually and am angry with myself. This card is amazing, people that see it can’t believe it’s an 8.5. So I thought worse case scenario it graded an 8 and I still get about the same amount with grading fees. Or it could have gotten a 9 and now I’m looking at $25k. I didn’t even consider the possibility of it coming back altered.
So since then, I sent it to a very reputable grading company, in the PSA trimmed holder and was able to explain everything. The person I spoke to on the phone said, we can look at it but if a grader sees the slightest indication, especially with it being submitted in PSA holder that says trimmed, you’re going to be out your grading fees. I wanted to do it more to see what happens. I thought for sure it would come back trimmed again. I just couldn’t see any indication, I looked at it for hours under loupes, light, black light, part light, etc. I COULD SEE NOTHING! The grader came back and said the same thing. They said they had multiple graders try to find something. They had their most experience graders try to find anything, nothing. The dude told me, that this card not only didn’t have any obvious signs of being trimmed, he said that the graders said there was no way it was trimmed by anything other than the original machine. He wouldn’t bash PSA, but he did indicate there were things he wanted to say but it wasn’t a good look if he did.
Basically, I feel like this. They have so much business that they don’t care about one individual. They do not like putting high grades on the 86 fleer, they save that for the influencers. They couldn’t justify not at least putting a 9 on this, so they called it altered and moved on. Im out $1000, actually I had to pay another $350 for this grade. They really are awful!

Pop Control 101 from PSA
I've had cards from a tamper-proof pack returned as "trimmed" by PSA. You could probably resubmit the card and a different grader would grade it. At their current prices forgetaboutit. SGC is my grader until PSA drops their prices.

I couldn’t agree more about the responsibility of grading and authentication companies to provide Grader’s Notes. I recently got my first 3 submissions of comic books back from CGC and had probably 50% of my submission with ZERO Grader’s Notes. In my mind, that is part of the service that you’re paying for, assessment, expertise, and encapsulation. It only makes customers more confident in the service if notes are included. Love your videos and your honest opinions. Keep up the good work.
Cricket? Cricket? All those 4-5s look like blazers. I can't recall ever seeing any T206 over a 5 grade. Wow. Crazy PSA would not grade. Out $300. Outrageous.

Wow, 15 years ago I sent my "Complete" 60's Topps Standup set for grading. They sent them back graded BUT said that the Carl Yastrzemski card had been "Shaved" and would not grade. I bought this set as a "Kid" direct from Topps( a send away set) by mail) when they came out. Handled them very little and stored in a special container that my Dad helped me build for All my cards. I called PSA and told them I bought the Set directly from Topps and they have "Never" been out of my possession and could not have been shaved - they stood by their decision - there is no way this card was "Shaved" !! Given the value of this set , I'm looking to sell at this time but need to revisit the grade and value of this card.
Grading cards is a double edged sword, your at the mercy of their opinion which sometimes is a paywall you can't get through even when you pay the fe and they don't, in this videos case, share the reason why they failed the card.

Chris, i have that same mind set towards SGC, and my vintage cards. Plus, they look better in the black and white slab, but it's $150 x14.00 = $164.00 total for PSA express, and when they send your card back designated as altered, and don't slab it, and still charge you full price, that sucks, it happened to me 3 x and i quit using them, I just got back my 1962 Brooks Robinson #45 from SGC and it was designated "altered" but they slabbed it and authenticated it with an A Which i totally appreciated, and that is great news about the Gretzky and Jordan cards, now i might just submit my 1969 Julius Erving #1 tall boy card to SGC, since it was one of the cards PSA designated as Altered, thanks to you making this video, outstanding my friend,
Thomas..I think you mean Wilt Chamberlain as he has the #1 card in the 1969 tall boy.I got a 1962 Topps Mickey Mantle card back from PSA unslabbed as recolored..I couldn't find any area recolored..Its wood grain so I thought maybe varnished..What do you all do with the cards that are unslabbed and deemed altered other than sending to SCG or Beckett?

PSA will give you a little more information if you check the results online. If you see " N-5 Altered Stock" on the Gretzky & Jordan results, it was likely the screwdowns pressing the stock.
The more reveal videos I watch, the more I realize that no grading company is perfect. They definitely all have thier plus and minuses. Excellent video, some very wicked cards. Any type of card that's 100+ years old is a fantastic thing to own imo. Keep up the good work.

PSA is the furthest from perfect there is. Upcharges are a joke and they grade cards that are perfect 5s. I've seen cards go from 5 PSA to 9.5 SGC.
Agreed. Grades are just an opinion - use them, but don't take them as gospel.

I used to have those 55 Bowman TV cards. I had Berra and Kaline and a bunch of other hall of farmers. But I got rid of them 30 years ago. Long before grading was a thing.

I use SGC for all my grading - I'm not trying to maximize resale value and I find their prices and submission process to be great

Chris great video as always, so glad SGC graded your 2 big money cards. For PSA to charge you full price & then even not grade an expensive card is beyond ridiculous. Years back PSA had no problem grading that Honus Wagner card that Gretzky owned which was a PSA 8 when it was so obviously trimmed. I think they’re so afraid of being exposed for making another big mistake instead of being professionals and do their job correctly. If they can’t give an explanation of why they couldn’t grade your card they should charge $0!! SGC and BGS are both much better IMO especially when you consider cost. Also many of my PSA cards have moved around in their cases and PSA 9’s sometimes look like 5’s.
Grading is SO subjective, PSA gives better grades to the big guys for sure!

CSG was my go-to grading company based on my NGC membership but with a 7 month wait for bulk grading for a recent order, I’ve turned to SGC thru a recently-discovered group submitter. My first order was graded by SGC in 11 DAYS!
I sent in a 2 Jordan rookies for a friend to CSG and one got a 9 and the other got altered and it was resubmitted to SGC and it came back a 9 as well. Sometimes I wonder about any of these grading companies.

I like Sgc for vintage and Csg for modern.
If you are paying for a grading service you have every right to know why they were reject and second there should be an appeal process. I hope other companies step up their game and take over PSA’s grading service. I strongly believe PSA needs to make some changes or people will go to other services who are just as qualified.
People already are. SGC has a large following. Be the change. Buy SGC or whoever you prefer and let people know that is who you prefer over psa.

Totally agree regarding SGC. They have always been my preference for vintage. Frankly, I'm losing faith in PSA, and I'm not convinced they will continue to be the top dog forever. There's really no solid reason they are right now, besides popularity of the moment. I can remember well when BGS was at the top. PSA is doing nothing to uphold their gifted status right now.

from all the psa 10s & bgs 9.5s, 10s , sgs 10s ive seen in person psa has been the cleanest overall from my experience of hundreds of cards over the years. Yes i agree psa is over hyped but im usually happier when i buy the psa graded card. bgs cards have been so off. sgc has a really nice case i actually like them but from the few 10s ive seen they are usually psa 9 quality from my experience.
We decide with our purchases which grader is the preferred. I’ve been using sgc for well over a year and prefer them by far over the others. I would use bgs for autos because I do like how their cases look with autos but they still take months and months.
Well this should help you lose even more faith in PSA. Idk if you heard about Logan Paul being sold a fake BBCE certified unopened case of 1st edition Pokemon boosters or not but what also came out of that story is that BBCE sends unopened Pokemon packs to PSA to grade for them. PSA has graded lord only knows how many opened Pokemon packs.
Been actually thinking about getting a couple cards graded...for my first time. Great, now everyone will get SGC and their prices will go up. 🤣
Sgc is the best overall grading company. People are starting to catch on to that fact.

I wonder if PSA doesn't reveal why as they don't want to have the 'issue' fixed and a resub? Obviously with the screwdown press, it's not as significant, but for unscroupulous people, if trimmed, color touch, whatever, might be advantageous to know what they picked up on and alter the tactics.

All signs point to PSA being understaffed. I pay attention to Sports cards and Pokemon cards and Im seeing the same complaints across the board. Workers probably have too many cards to grade so they are skimping on grading

PSA HAS to give explanations and them being top tier cards, and them being Jordan and Gretsky I would of took the gamble all day ..and not bad grades!! what a difference in price! (If I saw no flaws) Very Smart holds regarding the Cricket cards. I LOVE these pre 1930 cards!

Just because psa says something is altered doesn’t make it so. If it is something as simple as being in a screwdown holder that prevents a card from being graded then I think it’s splitting hairs.

When it comes to high profile cards, like those 2, they probably can't even give an explanation in most instances - other than not knowing or being confident in what they're looking at. So, instead of taking time to have someone really knowledgeable look it over, they just slap N6 or not authentic, etc. on there and move on, taking your money. I sent in a couple Brady RC's that I pulled from packs that I had opened just a week before... got 'min size' designations, lol! They're probably told to be excessively concerned about really nice looking, high value, cards - which is reasonable - but that hurts legitimate people just looking to get stuff graded.

That Willie Mays really pops in that tuxedo holder. I'd love to submit some cards for grading but don't know a ton about the process. Plus they are just cards for my PC so there probably isn't much point in having them graded, outside having them in the nice holders. Great video!
Plenty of videos out on to submit your cards Mike. I was just like you about a year ago, but have done a 180. Trying to upgrade all my cards into slabs
I would be happy with that Jordan card at that grade. The SGC slabs look good.
I've been saying this for over a year now. PSA deems cards ungradable to get through the back log. If PSA says two out of ten cards are "trimmed' "altered" or whatever, thats 20% of the back log they don't have to spend time on. I've seen people re-send the same card and get a grade on it. PSA is implementing that new technology "fingerprint" to not only sway people away from a crack and re sub but also to help cover they're asses for things like this.
Of course only my opinion but an opinion I've been sharing for a while lol

Chris, if the Jordan crease is a factory flaw crease then that would explain the 3 grade. Many 86 Fleer have those factory flaw creases and those usually grade a 3-4
Was only thinking today, would one of the grading companies would grade cricket cards, I have a few vintage Bradman cards.
Well that is amazing because I just did the exact same thing I sent a Jordan rookie and a another card and a Hank Aaron rookie and two of them came back as altered I had no idea why they were but they were in screw down holders for many years so I had that did the same thing I knew they were good and I was very frustrated with the fact that PSI didn't grade them
Try letting the jordan and gretzky get fresh open air in just a penny sleeve and to get its original thickness back. Usually 4-8 weeks and retry grading. Sweet cards and great video. Thank you for sharing.
Some really nice cards, I am am SGC fan when it comes to vintage. I beleive vintage pops in a tux and I believe that SGC will continue to close the price gap to PSA

Gotta agree with your statement about T206s: if they grade 4 or better, I consider them gem-mint. Certainly worth the $30 grading fee to clinch a three-figure price.
Good job Chris. I've had PSA reject a card for miscut/slight tilt - resubmitted and got it graded; same with some "corner crush" - these are just opinions to some degree. Grading is very expensive now for sure. Thanx for sharing buddy. 👍
Great call send the MJ & Gretzky to SGC. Do you think PSA overally harsh on those two cards. I have heard several guys mention that they have got very strict on Jordan's RC to control the population of it. One thing is for sure all of these cards in the video have strong eye appeal and centering. When I buy a Vintage card both of those factors are the most important to me. I'll buy a lower graded card over a high graded one. ***Have you seen "The Book of Boba Fett"? I watched a couple episodes and didn't like it. If you have do you recommend watching more episodes as it may get better?
Definitely watch Book of Boba Fett! Especially if you liked Mandalorian. Its get better later in the season.

Same happened to me with 1980 Topps Larry Bird Magic Johnson Julius Erving card. Sent it to BGS they authenticated and got graded. Idk I smell something fishy with this guy’s 🤔🤥
It took me a while but I'm sold on SGC. Any gold card looks amazing in the black slab and a little off in the PSA red slab. Also resale values are picking up steam for SGC and I'm even starting to get more lookers on my SGC slabs than some of my PSA on eBay.
Sgc has really loosened up on grading
I have four Ken Griffey cards and mint condition that are supposedly we're 600 dollars a piece do you have any advice for somebody like me who's selling cards... Everything I have is either PSA 10 or PSA 9
PSA, lose your shorts. SGC, lose a little less. I never see old judge for sale.
