On one hand maybe, but technically PS/PV made every pokemon insanely customizable with tera type, which ogrepon can't make full use of because of being fixed to only 4 tera types all which basically limits them to a specific combination.
It's amazing how this is basically the first pokemon where every single choice, every step of the way, every little decision you make about this mon leaves some other possibility on the table.
While I agree that Orgepon is too strong, I do really like the concept of having Legendary Pokemon a high skill-ceiling, forcing players to play smart when using the Pokemon at highest potential vs non-Legendary Pokemon where not as strong but easier to use by most people. Kinda wish they did this with all Legendary Pokemon tbh since it made sense to me that they would be harder to use due to how strong they are compared to non-Legendary Pokemon.
I love the little animation of your illustrations in this video. It feels as if im watching a battle simulation what if scenatio as the abilities, moves and types were being explained.
Fun fact- Jolly Tera Grass Ogrepon under tailwind has 700 Speed. Ivy Cudgel also has increased crit rate. It one shot most fluttermane variants BEFORE the swords dance as well, and one shot almost any bulky non-resist after. And don't forget, try to focus it and she might Spiky Shield :D
The stone mask could be useful in sandstorm. The boost of spdef is nice, the boost in def when tera synergizes well with it. Paired with something like Hippodown who checks steel types and can yawn while Ogerpon uses follow me, it could be interesting
@@Mut-ant Counterpoint: The point is that the weather and the Tera boost help with the bulk and Grass/Rock is a pretty dang terrific offensive type. The two types cover one another very well, with only Steel resisting both and many types problematic for one of the types being hit super-effectively with the other (Ice, Fire, Flying and Bug kill Grass, but are killed by Rock, while Water and Ground kill Rock, but are killed by Grass) and considering Ogerpon is already more of an attacker than a defender, that's all the better for her. Especially with her wielding a 100/100 Rock attack with high crit chance and getting a 20% power boost from the mask.
At least you get to see which type it is in team preview. This also tells you the item for 3 of the 4 types. Meanwhile, Urshifu typing is still unknown in team preview despite it being the most oppressive mon in the game with being unable to protect in front of it
With the introduction of such a competitively complex pokemon, I'd love to see you go back in time and talk about a pokemon in a past meta that had similar kinds of intricacies like togekiss. One example is how thunderus was adapted into the vgc meta game before and after the introduction of therian and the kinds of innovations that were discovered
Ogernpon is so damn cute and also with how cute it is in the story I think everyone SHOULD be using it in competitive! It deserves to be used by everyone :3
They kind of overdid how powerful they made Ogerpon, but her customization makes her super interesting. I would love to see similar innovative ideas for future Pokémon.
I honestly have been having quite a lot of success bringing Goodra against Ogerpon. Sap Sipper with tera water basically means that its common sets can't do anything to me.
Welp, then it's time for swords dance + giga impact to counter that. Even with a strong counter, it has such a good movepool that it can prepare for niche counters like goodra
@@loadingname4947 the main thing I like about Goodra isn't necessarily trying to KO with it, it's to disrupt. It recently got Scald and Knock Off in the DLC, which the Hisuian variant doesn't get. Between those and feint I can open opportunities to cripple the foundations of teams while my partners take advantage of the openings. But aside from that, Ogerpon needs either Follow Me or Spiky Shield based on what the form is trying to accomplish and at least two coverage moves. Sap Sipper alone helps a lot because Ogerpon loses its healing option against me and even if they use Mold Breaker it's not going to hit hard enough to be worthwhile. If you bring a third attack you either lost a set up move, you lost protection, or you gave up one of its STABs. It's not very likely that Ogerpon is gonna run something other than Ivy Cudgel and it's secondary Stab (usually Horn leech.)
“Most moves above 100 BP get a drawback, but not this one” is a sentence I’ve heard in one form or another A LOT in your recent videos. It seems that the trend with new Pokémon they have been throwing that design concept out the window, I guess balance doesn’t sell. But I don’t see why that has to be the case. Love the video Wolfey I’m a huge fan!
If I had a nickel for every time the legendary of the first DLC was broken, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but honestly not surprising that it happened twice.
To be fair, the legendary of every dlc up until now has been broken (as in, the ones you refer to + Calyrex. But then again, if we're talking about just SwSh and SV, so were the box legendaries too...)
You could just use a rapid strike Urshifu set with a muscle band since most of the moves that Urshifu runs are physical for x1.1 power. If you want to use this set in Showdown I have it here: Urshifu-Rapid-Strike @ Muscle Band Ability: Unseen Fist Tera Type: Water EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe Jolly Nature - Surging Strikes - Close Combat - Protect - Drain Punch I chose Tera water for this example but you can also recommend to use Terra Fighting to boost it's Close Combat and Drain Punch, however I figured Tera Grass also works for a immunity from Amoongus since it can't use Safety Googles. (Note: The spread I use is for a Fast Physical Sweeper, if you want you Urshifu to be more bulky I would recommend to put it's defense in special because most Fairy, Flying, Psychic, and Grass type Pokemon are special attackers.)
I personally really like ogerpon. To be honest it doesn't feel that more broken than other powerful stuff like lando-t, hands, urshi, cress and flutter, but I do think it is a really cool pokemon to have in this meta. There will always be pokemon stronger than others and I feel having ogerpon on top is maybe the most fun pokemon that you can have to be the best.
Before playing the DLC and seeing that Ogerpon had multiple masks, I was definitely scared you would only be able to have just ONE mask (meaning only two forms, base and whatever mask you would choose). I'm glad that you get access to all the masks which makes team building much easier (acting like I'm gonna be doing that). Compared to something like Urshifu where you're locked into one of two forms. Even something like Zacian vs Zamazenta, two different pokemon (obviously) you would most likely have to buy both Sword and Shield to obtain. What I'm trying to say is while a strong Pokemon is locked behind DLC, at least you only need the ONE DLC for multiple forms instead of having to have multiple copies of the same game in order to obtain the different forms.
This whole video just highlights how cool the design of Ogerpon is. Every form has trade-offs and benefits that make them unique between each form. Of course the Pokemon is busted af and probably the new Zacian but at least we get different flavours this time.
For the Hisuian Birb raid, I was using my fire Ogerpon, thinking it'd work out purely because I didn't have too many other options. So I trained her up, looked at her surprisingly vast movepool and came up with: Ivy Cudgel, Swords Dance, Focus Energy, Synthesis. Had a friend bring Sunny Day, and went for it. She definitely had some issues with Brave Bird, but I underestimated her power. My gods, the power. He'd put up the shield early because I'd faint from a lucky crit early on (talking like 95% HP remaining), and after three bonks, I'd Tera into Focus Energy, and just crack that bird open. It'd be like two whollops and she broke the shield, one more and the bird was dead. This was made scarier with the fact that my sister was also running Fire-Oger. That thing truly is an ogre. It's a proper monster, that village was right to fear it. The friends brought a Lunging Fortress and a Sunny Day/Reflect/Life Dew Jirachi, for reference. The power is real, the crits are real. That cute little monster is real..... insane.
I honestly love Ogerpon but this is before I learned how broken it was going to be. The story of the dlc makes ogerpon cute in my eyes and thus I wanted to use it cause it has water typing available and I love water types. So when I went to build my team I wanted to use waterpon cause Its water type and cause Oregpon is cute and deserves to be happy
I think comparing abilities and everything on paper between all forms, cornerstone ogerpon seems like the worst but somehow it is so so good; its extremely underrated, it is only resisted by steel, most top tier mon right now take a good hit from it like tornadus or fire ogerpon, sturdy doesnt seem like that good of an ability but it feels pretty good in it, i am using a team with it right now and i have been able to swords dance most of the time because of it, sturdy also comes clutch a lot of the time if you know how to position even against fire ogerpon with a +1 that tries to KO it and you respond with a 100 base rock type move
14:10 It's so funny that this generation gamefreak nerfed entry boosting abilities like intrepid sword to only activate once per battle, then immediately added a pokemon with a similar ability that isn't restricted
Is it a bit much? Yes, but i still like it, and let's be real for a moment, i'd rather have this as a super overpowered pokemon than ZACIAN GO BRRRR Or Geomancy at it's prime....
Sturdy is quite fitting for Ogerpon-Cornerstone imo. It allows you to just run max Speed so you can get off a quick Focus Energy and start getting guaranteed crits on everything
An interesting consideration when it comes to counterplay is actually something I’ve tried out before on showdown when thunderus incarnate was dominant in gen 8, prankster attract, since ogrepon is gender locked to female it will have a hard time making a significant impact if it has a 50% chance to waste a turn, and with open team sheets just the threat of prankster attract might make an opponent hesitant to even bring ogrepon into the battle
From a game design standpoint, it makes sense to make the more interesting game pieces more powerful as a way to incentivize competitive players to use it. There’s an argument that players that like these sort of designs don’t need a competitive push in order to engage with it, however I think that a power boost is needed if you want the really competitive players to engage with it. Regardless of if the power boost was needed, Ogerpon seems like a sweet design with a lot of area to explore and a lot of decision trees. Pokémon could use more designs like these. Oh and it’s really cute to boot, which is also a “reason” to make it powerful so that less competitive players don’t feel bad about using it. Not that needed to do that, single player Pokémon isn’t hard enough to justify that but whatever.
Punching Glove most likely. 10% damage boost and makes your punching moves stop being contact. Unseen fist only works on contact moves. You run it on Urshifu in closed teamsheet because people usually won't try to protect on you to begin with. So you get the 10% boost and ignore things like Rocky Helmet for no downside. I know it's just a funny animation, but it's been an interesting niche pick lately.
Another thing to consider: with how flexible ogrepon is, it's no longer about how to deal with ogrepon, but how to deal with each variant of ogrepon, as a setup sweeper would require different considerations from a tanky follow me, and etc.
I feel like ogerpon might have kinda been designed with closed team sheets in mind. Like it has all these crazy traits but the tradeoff is it has very few surprises. As soon as they see it your opponent immediately knows its tera type, its ability, and if youre using one of the masks they also know your item
Ogerpon impressed me with its performance. I thought it stats were pretty mediocre too at first, but it hits hard even as a jolly nature. Still gets outsped sometimes tho /:. Sturdy has come up a lot more often than I would expect. Horn Leech can re-activate it, and because of it, it can take down potential enemy sweepers.
@@gustavju4686 I still think the 20% damage and typing would be worth an item slot, but it still would be a "nerf" to the mon. Considering how Gigamax, megas, and zmoves have moved on I'm curious to see if it's as good in a game with another "borrowed power" type gimmick that isn't tera, or if tera is going to be a mainstay in the series
Because it does And the difference between 110 and 120 is pretty significant, especially once you start boosting your attack with Swords Dance or Fire Embody Aspect
I honestly love this design of Ogerpon. It’s extremely good, so you’re gonna be seeing it anyway, but it’s never gonna be the same Ogerpon each time. For the most part, strong Pokémon like that have little variation but Ogerpon has such variety with movepool and all the masks can do, it’s gonna make it really fun to fight and use
Atleast it has only 110base atk, the ruin Pokemon are even more broken than this with way higher stacking stats and way broken ability. Atleast they prenerfed it with low stats even as a legendary.
Disagree. While Ogrepon is stacked, gen 8 zacian is on a whole another level. It's basically a better Ogerpon with more attack, more speed, better type and movepool perfectly tailored to make it even stronger. Ogerpon is still strong but nowhere close, and most of the issue with it is how versatile it is and how you have to prepare for 20 different sets. Now, once ubers are allowed, now, Calyrex with terastal and Miraidon running over the entire meta will be something to behold xD
How is it too strong I wonder? Maybe the FRECAKIN CROWN THAT SUPEREFFECTIVES EVERYTHING? AND THE FREACKIN 100 BASE POWER ALWAYS STAB POWER BOOST WITH MASK LEGENDARY? I wonder what’s OP about that?
I wanna see Wolfe try to beat people while literally choosing Ogerpon’s moves at random, between Cudgel, Spiky Shield, Follow Me, and some coverage move. Just an extra layer on that targeting mindgame so his opponent will always guess wrong.
Ogerpon also learns trailblaze. Which could be an option on hearthflame sets to fix its speed issue and also gain small but respectable grass coverage. There's better options like horn leech, wood hammer, or power whip though. But trailblaze can help you snowball out of control a lot faster.
Editing was on 🔥 in this video. Very enjoyable to watch. Ogerpon is also ridiculous in singles and the Hearthflame mask got quick banned in OU very fast 😅
One more thing is when you terra you get extra damage on top of the extra dmg from it being Stab I think rock form is very good and people will realize that later on in the format.

It's amazing how this is basically the first pokemon where every single choice, every step of the way, every little decision you make about this mon leaves some other possibility on the table.
There should be a sign in the next few tournaments:
Beware! Ogerbonk ahead
Welp since gen 8 you know the team of your oponent before the battle, so its nor necessary
@@toupr4770That's the joke
Ogerpon is such a funny pokemon, glad to see its doing well.
Correction, ogerbonk
yes I too am glad to see power crept pokemon doing well for themselves
@@XVuler correction, ogerpain
@@itsrin868
Ogerpon is the power creeper, not the power crept, power crept is the old guys that keep getting worse because of things like Ogerpon
Doesn't matter, Ogerpon is the cutest legendary ever released 🥺. Protec her
From weird artist.
A cute pokemon must be sent out for extreme warfare against 2 other powerful pokemon.
@@NachoMountDewCatToo late😢
@@rezaalanshari1587 There is nothing we can do.
I think the cutest legendary is definitely marshadow
Ogerpon is absolutely amazing, especially in double battle gimmicks
And we thought Urshifu was rage inducing... the water bear shudders at the little mask goblin girl. I absolutely love her.
This video is so well made, props to the editor who did a fantastic job. I loved all the little animations, graphics and sound effects
I didnt even know the masks boosted her damage by 20%
The stone mask could be useful in sandstorm. The boost of spdef is nice, the boost in def when tera synergizes well with it. Paired with something like Hippodown who checks steel types and can yawn while Ogerpon uses follow me, it could be interesting
Your knowledge has what led me into develop interest in competitive battling
Fax same
@@MatthewWiiI didn’t know that Matt did ESports, let alone Pokémon!
I can imagine Rock Ogrepon would work well in a sand team, since you get a Defense Boost when Tera and a Sp Defense under sand
problem: it is not bulky enough and rock is a terrible defensive type

Giga impact? But the thing is with niche counters you'll need niche movesets which will open you up to things you'd normally counter
It's not very likely that Ogerpon is gonna run something other than Ivy Cudgel and it's secondary Stab (usually Horn leech.)
doesn’t ogrepon hearthflame + chien pao/flutter mane completely destroy this? what is goodra’s partner?
That is why the Mold Breaker one is best in my opinion. She stops that Sap Sipper idea if used right.
Yet
To be fair, the legendary of every dlc up until now has been broken (as in, the ones you refer to + Calyrex. But then again, if we're talking about just SwSh and SV, so were the box legendaries too...)
the box legends have to be strong but dlc ones are rushed out so they skip the balancing part
Ogerpon is what happens when Tinkaton and Chi-Yu have a baby together
You could just use a rapid strike Urshifu set with a muscle band since most of the moves that Urshifu runs are physical for x1.1 power. If you want to use this set in Showdown I have it here:
Urshifu-Rapid-Strike @ Muscle Band
Ability: Unseen Fist
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Surging Strikes
- Close Combat
- Protect
- Drain Punch
I chose Tera water for this example but you can also recommend to use Terra Fighting to boost it's Close Combat and Drain Punch, however I figured Tera Grass also works for a immunity from Amoongus since it can't use Safety Googles.
She's not only strong, she's cute as heck.
Poor, Wolfey. Thumbnail be showing Ogerpon waking up and choosing violence
This whole video just highlights how cool the design of Ogerpon is. Every form has trade-offs and benefits that make them unique between each form. Of course the Pokemon is busted af and probably the new Zacian but at least we get different flavours this time.
I have officially learned the difference between Middling and Bulky for the first time in Pokémon terms thanks wolf y.
The fire type ogrepon is everything Scovillian wished he was
For the Hisuian Birb raid, I was using my fire Ogerpon, thinking it'd work out purely because I didn't have too many other options. So I trained her up, looked at her surprisingly vast movepool and came up with:
Ivy Cudgel, Swords Dance, Focus Energy, Synthesis.
Congratulations to the editor(s), all these videos are super top quality!
Your editor is working wonders. Great content Wolfey
Local cutie pie makes World Champ go in depth.
12:26 a little mistake on the display part. Water/Grass Ogerpon stab moves are not resisted by water and dragon but by grass and dragon.
Our favorite Good Girl is doing great for herself
As always, amazing editing to accompany a clear and concise breakdown. Good shit Wolfe!
14:10 It's so funny that this generation gamefreak nerfed entry boosting abilities like intrepid sword to only activate once per battle, then immediately added a pokemon with a similar ability that isn't restricted
The only thing that makes me angry is that the rock form has sturdy which completely anti synergistic with the terrastral form boosting defense
4:57 exceptttt EARTHQUAKE FOR SOME REASON 😂😂😂
It hits your partner Pokémon too
Is it a bit much? Yes, but i still like it, and let's be real for a moment, i'd rather have this as a super overpowered pokemon than ZACIAN GO BRRRR Or Geomancy at it's prime....
Rather this even than lando-T on literally every.... Single... Team..... For years.....
Bro the sponsorship transition as subtle as a brick
if archaludon still has stalwart it will be a great/decent anwser to ogerpon
since it will fear the low kick/ superpower
Sturdy is quite fitting for Ogerpon-Cornerstone imo. It allows you to just run max Speed so you can get off a quick Focus Energy and start getting guaranteed crits on everything
Still not as format warping as Urshifu
An interesting consideration when it comes to counterplay is actually something I’ve tried out before on showdown when thunderus incarnate was dominant in gen 8, prankster attract, since ogrepon is gender locked to female it will have a hard time making a significant impact if it has a 50% chance to waste a turn, and with open team sheets just the threat of prankster attract might make an opponent hesitant to even bring ogrepon into the battle
HOLLY MOLLY.
2:43 Its attack is actually 120
7:51 On an unrelated note, why is Urshifu not going through protect.
You made our good girl look evil Wolfey how could you?
The production on this video is NEXT LEVEL!!
I feel like ogerpon might have kinda been designed with closed team sheets in mind. Like it has all these crazy traits but the tradeoff is it has very few surprises. As soon as they see it your opponent immediately knows its tera type, its ability, and if youre using one of the masks they also know your item
True, but seeing a train coming doesn't mean you can stop it.
@@maromania7 And there are so many different possible trains!
Breaking news: Gamefreak adds another fundamentally broken pokemon into scarlet and violet, bonking everyone on the head! In other news, water is wet
I’d be really interested in a video on kommo-o’s return
5:25 *pushes glasses up* technically it doesn't rock unless it's wearing the cornerstone mask
Actually words have different meanings, not all literal🤓
You know with our luck terapogas will end up with a Tera form that’s super effective versus everything
☠
Ogerpon impressed me with its performance. I thought it stats were pretty mediocre too at first, but it hits hard even as a jolly nature. Still gets outsped sometimes tho /:. Sturdy has come up a lot more often than I would expect. Horn Leech can re-activate it, and because of it, it can take down potential enemy sweepers.
I'm very curious to see how Ogrepon is in a game that does not have terastallization
Would basically be Teal Mask Ogrepon that doesn't go Tera
@@gustavju4686 I still think the 20% damage and typing would be worth an item slot, but it still would be a "nerf" to the mon. Considering how Gigamax, megas, and zmoves have moved on I'm curious to see if it's as good in a game with another "borrowed power" type gimmick that isn't tera, or if tera is going to be a mainstay in the series
Watching this months later, it’s crazy that the worlds tech ended up being teal mask bullet seed loaded dice to deal with Sash shifu
Pretty sure Ogerpon has 120 attack
Yes
Because it does
And the difference between 110 and 120 is pretty significant, especially once you start boosting your attack with Swords Dance or Fire Embody Aspect
I really like where you explain the “bulk tiers”
wolfey i think ogerpon attack is 120
I honestly love this design of Ogerpon.
Ogerpon is proof that Gamefreak learned nothing from Zacian.
Hey, at least it's not freaking fairy/steel type..... 1% better lmao
@@BusinessSkrub Zacian is way more broken 😂
Ogerpon has 120 base attack btw.
Ogerpon deserves all of the insane power because she is my beloved child and i am proud of her for being so stupidly busted
the amount of edits and how you explain everything is top notch! really proud to be a sub
👍
In sword and shield days I've been using Follow Me defensive blastoise lol, hard to imagine they now give it to legendary
I like how Wolfe says the DLC “just dropped” like it’s been out for a month at this point 😭
when he was recording the vid it just dropped
Your information has always been top notch but the video editing is really kicking it to another level. Another one well done Wolfey
One more thing is when you terra you get extra damage on top of the extra dmg from it being Stab I think rock form is very good and people will realize that later on in the format.
