@@_blueshark8721tbf, Ash was working off of Darkrai alone, since that was the only Pokémon he had seen Tobias use up to that point. Though he did have some thought to his composition so that he can deal with any surprises (Latios being that very same surprise). Though he lost, he went out like a champ, being the only one of Tobias’s opponents to not only KO his Darkrai, but even his Latios which he only ended up sending out for that one battle.

That Alpharad guy seems so smart and full of good ideas, what a guy. Ash's Lily of the Valley team was Infernape, Gliscor, Staraptor, Torterra, Buizel, and Pikachu. Tobias battle was more of a "how can I beat Darkrai" kind of team. Would definitely have wanted to see that as part of the analysis although feel as though it would be at the same rank. And it may be helpful to note that Ash's Pikachu has the unique defensive quality of being almost totally immune to ground and rock-type moves, because it can just jump over them
@@shujinkoMK Ash did manage to bring Darkrai down though (Darkrai only beat half of Ash's team before being felled by Sceptile). Then Tobias brought out his Latios and cleaned the rest of the battle up.
The games are not the anime. The games have 4 moves for the sake of ease (and tradition, since the original games could only handle having 4 moves in the coding for each pokemon) In the anime, pokemon can learn as many moves as they like. They rarely use more than 4 moves in a battle, as outside of championships, battles are relatively short, often having pokemon be knocked out by one or two attacks.
@@BYERE actually, I would say they use 4 moves for the most part in the anime as well, unless they are using a Z move or learning a new move during the battles Even then, since they forget a move after learning a new one, it's still 4 moves
@@connorclinton7650 Yes, they do tend to stick to 4 moves in the battle where possible (the writer's choreographing of the battle, I mean), BUT what I mean is that the pokemon itself doesn't forget moves. It's why we've seen pokemon use moves they had early on, but they've used 4 or more moves SINCE then. An example is how Ash gets Charizard to use Ember during his battle with Drake in the Orange Islands, even though in the episodes prior to that, Charizard has used Flamethrower, Fly, Seismic Toss, Rage, Dragon Rage, etc (I guess technically Stomp, Gust/Whirlwind, Rest, and others too... though these were moreso him disobeying Ash and/or refusing to battle, prior to the episode Charizard Chills)

I'd say that the Pokemon he used against Tobias had better feats than the majority of his team he used on Paul besides Infernape. Torkoal got hoed out of his win against Registeel, Swellow has one of the best win rates of his Pokemon and the best of his birds, and Heracross smacked up Garry's Magmar, to name a few.

Ash's Torterra is infamous for losing every battle since evolving, and his Gliscor also has terrible battle reps. "Pokémon Quality" seems like a nebulous, nonsense term when we see that a Pikachu can defeat ground types by aiming for the horn or how Sceptile, a pokémon infamous for having shit movepools for its stat distribution is easily one of the strongest. While Ash shoud absolutely have used his broken Infernape instead of a that meme pick Torkoal that lost like every battle it was in, most of Sinnoh's team sadly got shafted because of the Infernape storyline. @@MorrisPXG
Ash hand-picked his team strictly to deal with Tobias's Darkrai. Hence why his Heracross knew Sleep Talk there. Not that I know what he was cooking with Gible beyond Draco Meteor, but Heracross - Sleep Talk Sceptile - Out-skill (specifically at CQC) Swellow - Outmaneuver Torkoal - Outlast (Snorlax may have been better.) Pikachu - Out-experience. Gible - Spray and Pray
Defensive pokemon are pretty slow which would make the battles and animations pretty boring. Defensive pokemon also have some strategy that requires set ups or stalling and Ash is not the type to wait around and stall for a win.
And just to flex, Ash almost ran a competitive moveset. Fishious Rend bc duh. Dragon Rush for STAB. Ice Fang for coverage. And Water Gun for ... physical walls? My man became world champ with Water Gun on of his mon's movesets, what a legend
Nothing to do with this ranking but still very much related to Ash's history, I love the fact that he won his greatest victory ever by knocking off a Charizard with Pikachu, remember he lost his first League Conference ever because his own Charizard refused to battle against a Pikachu, I think this was a nice touch even if it's most likely a coincidence

Ya what many non-anime fans don’t realize is that many of Ash’s “champion battle” teams are not good representations of the core team he had in a region. A lot of placing threw me off because as an anime fan I am not used to identifying with the last team Ash used in a league.
@@TimG57867 Alola was the most egregious example here... Not only are Lycanroc-Dusk and Melmetal very solid options, but he also had Incineroar and fuckin NAGANADEL, like this team was cracked. If only he remembered to evolve his final pokemon Rowlet, that team could be in contention for best on the list imo. But Rowlet was the resident cute, unevolved by personality choice... still
What makes the Alola cup kinda funny is that while yeah Melmetal, Pikachu, and Lycanroc were in that final team, his backups were also Incineroar and Naganadel. Wow ground just wrecks that team
An interesting fact about Ash's snorlax is that it is his only pokemon with a positive K:D ratio, meaning that it has knocked out at least one pokemon every time it's been used.
@Blake N it is tho? it got 1 or more KOs for every time it has been knocked out. you might be thinking of win ratio, which is 1 or more wins for every loss, and is more applicable to ash, given that it refers to overall battles won regardless of how many KOs are involved on either side. i also have no idea if any of his other pokemon accumulate a positive K/D ratio by just. knocking out multiple pokemon in some battles to make up for the times they fail to get even 1 KO. that's probably a thing too. pikachu is also probably positive just from KO accumulation against team rocket.
I think a video on how you would improve each of Ash's teams without fundamentally changing them too much would be really cool, like you hinted at at the end of the Unova section.
@@aquagiraffe1988 I think it can be a lot more interesting than that. Removing the weak link wouldn't change the overall feel of a team, such as Corphish, especially if he stuck to Pokemon Ash had at the time, and he could also analyze the movesets each Pokemon used at the league.

I'm just still in awe that he finally did it. I'm just so happy he finally won and became the very best like no one ever was. From the vision pikachu had of all of Ashs pokemon to the first ever theme playing to Ash turning his hat backwards. The best episode of pokemon ever. Made me cry like a baby.
Yeah it was tight. All the pokemon worked hard to get to this point and Pikachu was the last man standing. He couldnt just let them all down so he manned up and bodied the Charizard. Pokemon rules

I made an Ash team in Sword and took it on the ladder. It was Ash hat Pikachu (didn’t get used very much), Charizard, Torcoal, Lapras, Dracovish and Butterfree. It was basically Sun and Rain modes with Butterfree using Rage Powder, Sleep Powder, Tailwind and Pollen Puff. The team did decently well and I got it into Masterball Tier which I was pretty happy with! 😊
I wish you would have included the Orange Islands team. It was his first full 6 Pokemon team, and he had Tauros in Gen 1. Plus, he actually won against an undefeated champion in Drake. Sound familiar?
To the Alola League one, you could have used the one from the battle against Kukui, because it's a full team, it is almost part of the league and it kinda has Inceneroar

The Alola team has no team wipers and their biggest threat is Pikachu, a pokemon Kalos already has on their team. To say nothing of how much more powerful the Galar team is, Dracovish dismantles Incineroar and Rowlet with one fishious rend

I know Ash wants to let his Pokémon choose the form they want He refuses to use Everstones and it’s confirmed he keeps evolution stones just in case his Pokémon change their minds and decide they want to evolve But yeah, not forcing his Pokémon to Evolve definitely hurts his strength
Looking back you could recognise some growth in Ash teams during the last 3 seasons/leagues, aside from Rowlet and Pikachu everything was evolved 6-7-8 and his placings being second-first and first. Ash has reached his peak finally and now needs to catch Ho-oh

Heck, Pikachu still feared away from a Thunderstone in the episode where Goh catches a Pikachu, despite already having Gigantamaxed earlier. While it's easy to say that none of them know that Gmax Pokémon can't evolve, it would make more sense if they saw that first hand. Would give Pikachu closure about that fear, too.
Pikachu is usually considered to be better than raichu and they're never evolving it, rowlet however had the everstone so it wasnt possible to evolve so it makes sense, its the only one of his gen 7 team that didnt evolve

Maybe I didn't understand correctly, but Rotom Wash is an incredible singles Pokemon. It volt switches on everything it can't hit super effectively, stab hydro pump, will o wisp, with decent recovery. Very few pokemon block it, limited to bulky waters immune to electric like gastrodon, assuming room isn't running rare toxic.
His Pokémon in indigo league conference isn't only those Pokémon, he used many different teams that contained Pokémon like Muk and Kingler, and those help a lot so if you forgot about that then there you go.
I feel like this should be redone using the strongest team from each region, rather than the team he lost/won with. Because a lot of the time there's much stronger teams he used in previous battles in the tournament
I didn't noticed, but its kind of natural that Ash's teams got better with time and Generations, like a continious growth and learning from mistakes like "not evolving you pokemons" o having bad balancing strategy. Like, it's obvious for us that those are mistakes, but not for him. If you look the big schema of things, it all have sense. He was never bad, just unexperienced... like most of us at that age. @@justinokeke2027 The Gen 1 team actually improves a ton with that. Gen 1 Tauros is pretty much the best non-Legendary Pokemon and Lapras can abuse the freeze mechanics of the time. And even if they didn't shift much it would still make for more interesting analysis. The 3 Pokemon teams just suffer too much from having limited options to make a compelling case.
@@justinokeke2027 Actually not. Kukui battle's team is a WAY weaker to ground (cause of Incineroar and Naganadel) but it's far better defensively overall + having stronger ofensives and better type matchups.
It could be seen as him maturing as well: he's able to evolve his pokemon because he himself has grown and evolved. In Kanto he had the potential but not the fully devolped skills or knowledge to go too far. Eight (and a half) regions later, however, he is far better and more able. Ash *himself* is the one who evolved the most. Yet he's still ten.
Ash's Gible was certainly a wasted opportunity, they introduced it but then remembered ash had a Monferno/infernape and it was supposed to be his ace for the region. They could've easily pulled a Aipom with it and had it go with him to Unova and have it evolve into Garchomp along the way. To me it probably would've been a more interesting story than Krookodile. You could already see it's passion for battling during the Sinnoh league. It would've been interesting to see it evolve and fully awaken a aggressive passion for battling. But no, they wanted ash's Charizard to return for a time instead.
It is amazing you actually got Sarah to do a bit of a cameo in your video. Also this video is amazing and I really enjoyed it. It almost seems like low hanging fruit to do something like this, analyzing Ash's teams, but you really did your research and gave some excellent reasons and all that, and because of that I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. If you use Sceptile and Crowdaunt, YES, Ash's team is good. I know that water moves are special in Gen3 BUT Crowdaunt don't really need a Physical Crabhammer to sweep 🤣

You forgot to mention that Ash's Swellow, in particular, doesn't have the species normal weakness to electricity, in fact it seems to have a resistance to it if Ash's Thunder Armor strategy was anything to go by. The reason he caught it in the first place was because it took Pikachu's Thunderbolts like a champ!
That most likely was swelled ability guts, I mean when pikachu did that it was probably for paralysis, idk why they chose thunder probably just for dramatic effect for the anime

Honestly, I would've ranked Alola's team based on his full party of 6: Pikachu, Rowlet, Torracat, Lycanroc, Melmetal and Naganadel. After all, even if the final was a 3v3, the REAL final battle was the 6v6 against Kukui. I think that would be more fair as a whole, especially considering that he draws from that team of 6 when battling in a 3v3 anyway. Other than that, great video! I always love the synergy analysis and the editing.
Minor complaint: You acknowledge which Pokémon came out in which era but not the gameplay differences. For example, you mention Thunder Punch not being good with Grovyle’s low attack, even though it would have been special in gen 3
I think Ash's team against Kukui and against Paul need to be analyzed as well. Both are arguably more balanced than his others teams from their respective gens and you miss powerhouses like Infernape and Incinaroar (ohh now I know why you didn't use it)

The Johto League was my personal favorite. It was intense and neck to neck and that Charziard v Blaziken battle is an all time classic. Not to mention it was a perfect tease of the Hoenn region.
It's a pet peeve of mine when someone says ash doesn't evolve his pokemon. Like... Its weird how people seem to completely ignore the fact the pokemon arent forced to evolve in the anime, or really in the games unless you use a stone or trade item or whatever. The pokemon have a choice wether they want to evolve or not, and in the game mechanics you have the option to not allow then to evolve because its just built in that they do at a certain stage (for the most part)

And remember it can turn into Ash-Gren at anytime. Goodra is a special wall that can tank at least one ice type and do the damage it needs for hawlucha and ash-gren to clean up. Hawlucha being fast with unburden also makes it easy to chip Ash-Gren’s walls or sweep itself. No toxapex? Free real estate
Had a cool idea that Im not sure if you have already thought about. But would be a cool follow up to this video. Building a competitive team from Ash's pokemon championship pool. You could do two flavours, One team where every pokemon has to be from a different Generation. So even though there is more than 6 gens, you just pick the best one from each gen to make 6. The other one would be just picking the 6 best pokemon to form a team around, no restrictions on one per generation. So Kind of like a "Final Form" for all of Ashs pokemon.
Honestly I think my favourite battle to this day is still Ash VS Gary and Ash VS Paul, those episodes were so tense, now that I think about it I’ve never done a Paul Playthough team that would be so fun
Now you’ve got me wondering what the best possible team was that Ash could have assembled every league based on all his Pokémon caught (and mostly favoring ones from the region he was in)
I think the reason why Ash's Kalos loss stung, was BECAUSE his team for the first time ever, by that point, was STACKED. But a LOT of people tend to forget, that while Ash-Greninja and regular Greninja have a type advantage over REGULAR Charizard, he does NOT have a type advantage against MEGA-Charizard X, which becomes a Fire/Dragon type, negating the water weakness. I can see why people were upset at the Kalos loss, but I'd rather Ash lose to a trainer who has taken the time to REALLY train up his pokemon, and be a proper rival, than to someone with a god damn Action Replay. Ash and Alain were good rivals for each other, and because of that, no matter what, the match was downright exciting. I really hate when people go "lol it's just plot armor" for when he wins. No. He wins because of hard work and determination. His Pokémon respond to his iron will with that same energy. He brings out the very best in his opponents and challenges them with his unique and inspired plays. He always thinks out of the box, and that's helped him a lot in the past and even recently. His Kalos, Alola and Galar teams were all very good, so no it's not plot armor. HE JUST HAS THAT WORLD CHAMP DIFFERENCE BABY.
Wasn't Alain's Charizard boosted by the Mega Energy that he was collecting for Lysandre for like X years? I'm pretty sure they even mentioned in the anime but Ash "decided" to not do a re-match.

Got to love that even though this list is based on competitive Pokémon instead of their track record in the anime, Unova somehow still comes last😅Appreciate you used the Japanese version of the XY&Z theme during the Kalos segment, that theme is a banger. While I'm glad Ash won in Alola and world champion in Galar, he deserved to win against Alain in the Lumiose Conference. Because of the small size of the Indigo and Manalo teams, I feel it should've been fair to talk about Ash's full teams against Drake from the Orange League (yes Orange isn't official, but it's still a full team) and Professor Kukui respectively. Also, Gible is pronounced “gibble” because it’s a pun of “nibble”, just like how its evolutions Gabite and Garchomp are other puns for munching
I love how there is absolutely no method to justify Ash’s showing in Unova. Not in moveset, not in Pokémon chosen for each battle, not the outcome of any battle, not even the tone of the battle. It’s surprisingly consistent how bad Ash’s Unova showing was.
You should totally make a video on what ash’s best competitive team would look like in vgc. Not including any Pokémon he had temporarily or released, but everything he currently has either on his journey currently and back at Oaks lab. I’d love to see something like that from you!
When you think about it, Ash was likely exploring different style of training for the first 5 regions as well as seeking out professionals to help train his pokemon to an extent. Starting from Kalos though, he begun actively seeking out powerups like unique evolutions, Mega evolution and Z-moves which would explain why he becomes so powerful at the end.
All the unevolved pokemon does make me wonder if there could be a mechanic to bring more not fully evolved pokemon to being viable. I always liked how they learned moves faster and better unevolved and usually stick with them in-game, but of course that doesn't matter after learning the moves. I really liked the introduction of Eviolite, it made a lot of really interesting choices that made it fun to me that you could play with stats that way and turn such a core mechanic of the games on its head. An obvious extension could be an Eviolite Blade or something that increases the attack stats, and with how offense-based the meta is I'm sure a number of pretty busted preevolutions would come out of it, but I doubt it'd be an scenario where there'd be a lot.

That Alpharad guy seems so smart and full of good ideas, what a guy. Ash's Lily of the Valley team was Infernape, Gliscor, Staraptor, Torterra, Buizel, and Pikachu. Tobias battle was more of a "how can I beat Darkrai" kind of team. Would definitely have wanted to see that as part of the analysis although feel as though it would be at the same rank. And it may be helpful to note that Ash's Pikachu has the unique defensive quality of being almost totally immune to ground and rock-type moves, because it can just jump over them

The games are not the anime.
The games have 4 moves for the sake of ease (and tradition, since the original games could only handle having 4 moves in the coding for each pokemon)
In the anime, pokemon can learn as many moves as they like. They rarely use more than 4 moves in a battle, as outside of championships, battles are relatively short, often having pokemon be knocked out by one or two attacks.

@@connorclinton7650 Yes, they do tend to stick to 4 moves in the battle where possible (the writer's choreographing of the battle, I mean), BUT what I mean is that the pokemon itself doesn't forget moves. It's why we've seen pokemon use moves they had early on, but they've used 4 or more moves SINCE then.
An example is how Ash gets Charizard to use Ember during his battle with Drake in the Orange Islands, even though in the episodes prior to that, Charizard has used Flamethrower, Fly, Seismic Toss, Rage, Dragon Rage, etc (I guess technically Stomp, Gust/Whirlwind, Rest, and others too... though these were moreso him disobeying Ash and/or refusing to battle, prior to the episode Charizard Chills)

The team Ash used against Paul in Gen 4 was much stronger than the one he lost with. Would've been cool to see that team in here as well.
I'd say that the Pokemon he used against Tobias had better feats than the majority of his team he used on Paul besides Infernape. Torkoal got hoed out of his win against Registeel, Swellow has one of the best win rates of his Pokemon and the best of his birds, and Heracross smacked up Garry's Magmar, to name a few.

While Ash shoud absolutely have used his broken Infernape instead of a that meme pick Torkoal that lost like every battle it was in, most of Sinnoh's team sadly got shafted because of the Infernape storyline. @@MorrisPXG

Defensive pokemon are pretty slow which would make the battles and animations pretty boring. Defensive pokemon also have some strategy that requires set ups or stalling and Ash is not the type to wait around and stall for a win.

Ya what many non-anime fans don’t realize is that many of Ash’s “champion battle” teams are not good representations of the core team he had in a region. A lot of placing threw me off because as an anime fan I am not used to identifying with the last team Ash used in a league.

i also have no idea if any of his other pokemon accumulate a positive K/D ratio by just. knocking out multiple pokemon in some battles to make up for the times they fail to get even 1 KO. that's probably a thing too. pikachu is also probably positive just from KO accumulation against team rocket.
I would love to see a version of this, but with Ash’s actual region teams, and giving benefit of the doubt to regions with more that 6 mons

I made an Ash team in Sword and took it on the ladder. It was Ash hat Pikachu (didn’t get used very much), Charizard, Torcoal, Lapras, Dracovish and Butterfree. It was basically Sun and Rain modes with Butterfree using Rage Powder, Sleep Powder, Tailwind and Pollen Puff. The team did decently well and I got it into Masterball Tier which I was pretty happy with! 😊
I wish you would have included the Orange Islands team. It was his first full 6 Pokemon team, and he had Tauros in Gen 1. Plus, he actually won against an undefeated champion in Drake. Sound familiar?

Heck, Pikachu still feared away from a Thunderstone in the episode where Goh catches a Pikachu, despite already having Gigantamaxed earlier. While it's easy to say that none of them know that Gmax Pokémon can't evolve, it would make more sense if they saw that first hand. Would give Pikachu closure about that fear, too.
Pikachu is usually considered to be better than raichu and they're never evolving it, rowlet however had the everstone so it wasnt possible to evolve so it makes sense, its the only one of his gen 7 team that didnt evolve

Maybe I didn't understand correctly, but Rotom Wash is an incredible singles Pokemon. It volt switches on everything it can't hit super effectively, stab hydro pump, will o wisp, with decent recovery. Very few pokemon block it, limited to bulky waters immune to electric like gastrodon, assuming room isn't running rare toxic.

I didn't noticed, but its kind of natural that Ash's teams got better with time and Generations, like a continious growth and learning from mistakes like "not evolving you pokemons" o having bad balancing strategy.
Like, it's obvious for us that those are mistakes, but not for him.

And even if they didn't shift much it would still make for more interesting analysis. The 3 Pokemon teams just suffer too much from having limited options to make a compelling case.

It could be seen as him maturing as well: he's able to evolve his pokemon because he himself has grown and evolved. In Kanto he had the potential but not the fully devolped skills or knowledge to go too far.
Eight (and a half) regions later, however, he is far better and more able.
Ash *himself* is the one who evolved the most.
Yet he's still ten.
Ash's Gible was certainly a wasted opportunity, they introduced it but then remembered ash had a Monferno/infernape and it was supposed to be his ace for the region. They could've easily pulled a Aipom with it and had it go with him to Unova and have it evolve into Garchomp along the way. To me it probably would've been a more interesting story than Krookodile. You could already see it's passion for battling during the Sinnoh league. It would've been interesting to see it evolve and fully awaken a aggressive passion for battling. But no, they wanted ash's Charizard to return for a time instead.

You forgot to mention that Ash's Swellow, in particular, doesn't have the species normal weakness to electricity, in fact it seems to have a resistance to it if Ash's Thunder Armor strategy was anything to go by. The reason he caught it in the first place was because it took Pikachu's Thunderbolts like a champ!

Honestly, I would've ranked Alola's team based on his full party of 6: Pikachu, Rowlet, Torracat, Lycanroc, Melmetal and Naganadel. After all, even if the final was a 3v3, the REAL final battle was the 6v6 against Kukui. I think that would be more fair as a whole, especially considering that he draws from that team of 6 when battling in a 3v3 anyway.
Other than that, great video! I always love the synergy analysis and the editing.
Minor complaint: You acknowledge which Pokémon came out in which era but not the gameplay differences. For example, you mention Thunder Punch not being good with Grovyle’s low attack, even though it would have been special in gen 3

I think Ash's team against Kukui and against Paul need to be analyzed as well. Both are arguably more balanced than his others teams from their respective gens and you miss powerhouses like Infernape and Incinaroar (ohh now I know why you didn't use it)

The Johto League was my personal favorite. It was intense and neck to neck and that Charziard v Blaziken battle is an all time classic. Not to mention it was a perfect tease of the Hoenn region.
It's a pet peeve of mine when someone says ash doesn't evolve his pokemon. Like... Its weird how people seem to completely ignore the fact the pokemon arent forced to evolve in the anime, or really in the games unless you use a stone or trade item or whatever. The pokemon have a choice wether they want to evolve or not, and in the game mechanics you have the option to not allow then to evolve because its just built in that they do at a certain stage (for the most part)

Like yeah, the pokemon INDIVIDUALLY are strong, but together, they do not function as a cohesive unit and Ash's Kalos team is an utter failure in that regard due to having such an easily exploitable weakness

And remember it can turn into Ash-Gren at anytime. Goodra is a special wall that can tank at least one ice type and do the damage it needs for hawlucha and ash-gren to clean up. Hawlucha being fast with unburden also makes it easy to chip Ash-Gren’s walls or sweep itself.

Building a competitive team from Ash's pokemon championship pool. You could do two flavours, One team where every pokemon has to be from a different Generation. So even though there is more than 6 gens, you just pick the best one from each gen to make 6. The other one would be just picking the 6 best pokemon to form a team around, no restrictions on one per generation. So Kind of like a "Final Form" for all of Ashs pokemon.
Nice to see someone appreciating torkoal. I've tried coming up with turtle teams in the past and torkoal has always been a solid choice.
Honestly I think my favourite battle to this day is still Ash VS Gary and Ash VS Paul, those episodes were so tense, now that I think about it I’ve never done a Paul Playthough team that would be so fun

I think the reason why Ash's Kalos loss stung, was BECAUSE his team for the first time ever, by that point, was STACKED. But a LOT of people tend to forget, that while Ash-Greninja and regular Greninja have a type advantage over REGULAR Charizard, he does NOT have a type advantage against MEGA-Charizard X, which becomes a Fire/Dragon type, negating the water weakness. I can see why people were upset at the Kalos loss, but I'd rather Ash lose to a trainer who has taken the time to REALLY train up his pokemon, and be a proper rival, than to someone with a god damn Action Replay. Ash and Alain were good rivals for each other, and because of that, no matter what, the match was downright exciting.
I really hate when people go "lol it's just plot armor" for when he wins. No. He wins because of hard work and determination. His Pokémon respond to his iron will with that same energy. He brings out the very best in his opponents and challenges them with his unique and inspired plays. He always thinks out of the box, and that's helped him a lot in the past and even recently. His Kalos, Alola and Galar teams were all very good, so no it's not plot armor. HE JUST HAS THAT WORLD CHAMP DIFFERENCE BABY.

While I'm glad Ash won in Alola and world champion in Galar, he deserved to win against Alain in the Lumiose Conference. Because of the small size of the Indigo and Manalo teams, I feel it should've been fair to talk about Ash's full teams against Drake from the Orange League (yes Orange isn't official, but it's still a full team) and Professor Kukui respectively.

I love how there is absolutely no method to justify Ash’s showing in Unova. Not in moveset, not in Pokémon chosen for each battle, not the outcome of any battle, not even the tone of the battle. It’s surprisingly consistent how bad Ash’s Unova showing was.

When you think about it, Ash was likely exploring different style of training for the first 5 regions as well as seeking out professionals to help train his pokemon to an extent.
Starting from Kalos though, he begun actively seeking out powerups like unique evolutions, Mega evolution and Z-moves which would explain why he becomes so powerful at the end.
First 4 generations tbh. Gen 4 his rival Paul that pushed ash into understanding a lot of the different mechanics of pokemon and get stronger.

All the unevolved pokemon does make me wonder if there could be a mechanic to bring more not fully evolved pokemon to being viable.
I always liked how they learned moves faster and better unevolved and usually stick with them in-game, but of course that doesn't matter after learning the moves.
I really liked the introduction of Eviolite, it made a lot of really interesting choices that made it fun to me that you could play with stats that way and turn such a core mechanic of the games on its head.
An obvious extension could be an Eviolite Blade or something that increases the attack stats, and with how offense-based the meta is I'm sure a number of pretty busted preevolutions would come out of it, but I doubt it'd be an scenario where there'd be a lot.
