wisdom and love don’t know much about the volt. The 75 mpg is easily achieved with my normal mix of journeys and as I say I’m at 128 now because so much of my driving is about town so on full electric. My previous normal mix of driving measured over a tank (lasting 850-900 miles) would be my daily commute mixed with some about-town journeys on full electric, and possibly longer journeys at lower mpg. I would often get 80 or so for the commute by doing 70-75mph on the motorway.
One of the things I do is set the day nav for every journey where the engine will be in use. The car is supposed to then decide when the best time to use the electric motor will be. Seems to work because on my commute with sat nav the car will use the engine on the M4 so I have energy once I come off the motorway, but if I don’t set the sat nav it will use electric till it runs out.
You are correct in stating that the diesel engine, in general, is worse than it's petrol equivalent when it comes to NOX and particles, but if you compare CO2-emissions the diesel is almost always better than the petrol engines with similar specs. If Mercedes has managed to lower the NOX and particle emissions to the same levels as the petrol engines, this engine is propably better, when it comes to emissions in total, when compared to the petrol engine version, thus making it a more eco friendly choice over all.
I have an e220d. The engine is excellent. The vibrations are barely noticeable. The 9g tronic gearbox is really good it shifts smoothly and at high speeds (130kmph) the engine runs at 1250rpm. The low rpm reduces noise and gives you good fuel consumption. I drive it quite hard and I get roughly 6l/100km.
About time Diesel plug-in hybrids were available, hopefully more manufacturers will also start making them. Although not sure why there's so much negativity about Diesel cars in this video. Yes they pollute but petrol hybrids aren't much better and even full EVs do - it's just relocated to the power station.
About 15 years ago, when the Prius was showing the world all about hybrids, I hoped for a diesel-electric hybrid that I could run on biodiesel. At the time I was running my '68 220Diesel on a biodiesel blend back in Seattle. It ran so well and smelled so nice lol. If biodiesel is a thing in the UK, this could be the ultimate clean plug-in hybrid. Though I know the manufacturers don't really support alternative fuels... Anyway, nice review, this car is the great-great-great-great grandchild of my car, and a great spiritual successor. Looks lovely, though sooo futuristic compared to my stick-shift 5-pedal /8! :-)
Diesel engines have been made 'clean' by fitting them with various expensive and complicated emissions control devices. I have a petrol version of this hybrid and find on most trips. the engine is barely used. and even when the battery is depleted to 10%, the engine is only working part time. On paper and in a road test for a few miles in a new vehicle, the potential problems are not apparent but modern non hybrid diesels often develop problems with emissions systems so in all probability, this diesel hybrid could become very unreliable.
if you put this next side to side to the first generation volvo v60 hybrid which is the diesel electric version which one is the most fuel efficient between the two provided you have to try between London and Guildford in Surrey?
Not every car is made for every market. For example i am in process of buying it and i live in Eastern Europe in Serbia. Here fuel is really expensive (avg 1.30€/L) and diesels pay for themeselfes in short period of time. I own a A200 W169 as a 2.0L CDI engine with 6km/L (city plus highway). This car is perfect for a country like Serbia. It charges itself on diesel but also in some places in city center you can actually charge it. So in my opinion only bad part is the poor diesel engine never getting wormed up and for diesels its really bad to run theme cold
Interesting, I always believed a Diesel engine didn’t work well in a PHEV set up as it takes a while to warm up and become efficient. I guess this actually works well, nice job MB
I think you still have an idea of old diesel engines. Modern diesel engines are very quiet even when starting cold and warm up quickly due to electronically controlled thermostats. They have exhaust treatment systems that make them just as clean even on start up.
There is no reason whatsoever why pM and NOx emissions should be higher than a petrol engine. Some petrol engines emit quite high levels of PM, especially the smaller most damaging species and SCR to abate NOx is hardly a new technology. As is so often the case, politicians and the media went from ill informed veneration of diesel engines to equally I'll informed vilification of diesel engines.
Hi mate do you have any idea how many miles does mercedes e class plug in hybrid have it's life time means if I buy an old one can I drive upto 250,000 miles. Please let me know
Why--WHY--does Mercedes put the plug in the bumper-crush danger zone? They couldn't have done worse if they'd put the socket in the middle of the steering wheel.
My only worry would be the particulate filter clogging simply because on a 30 mile trip there is a good chance that the engine won’t have heated up properly, I wonder if Mercedes offered a oil heater mode when on ev only for when it swapping power plants over
Look, older diesels pre euro5 are the problem when it comes to particulates. Euro 5 introduced the DPF to reduce particulate emissions. Euro 6/6.5 are better than petrol counterparts but this doesnt fit into the blinkered world view of "dirty diesels. Around the cities its lorries, Van's and coaches causing the majority of problems followed by pre euro 5 diesels and to an extent euro 5. CO2 fleet emissions are now steadily rising due to switching to petrol power, meanwhile distance drivers wont get full benefit of hybrid charge ups because the battery will be depleted long before the end of the journey meaning higher co2 emissions than the equivalent diesel, apart from this Merc of course 😘

I paid my own money for this car and I think you might like to know I cant get anywhere near your fuel economy when the battery runs out at 22 miles. I've tried everything to get the battery range up to anywhere higher than 22 miles but its having NONE of it. This is using a 7Kw installed charger, and it also takes A LOT longer than 2 hours to charge... Anyway I digress... Here are the headline figures that might make you reconsider. When the battery runs out the fuel economy drops to 25 to 28 MPG if you try and charge on the go, and if you leave it in hybrid mode and drive normally it might get as high as 33-35MPG UK... I have taken it to THREE Mercedes dealers now, and the only way they can get more than 22 miles indicated on the range display is by messing with their diagnostic kit and fooling the car into thinking there is no data to evaluate range from therefore the 31 miles..... When this was done the range dropped from 31 miles to 24 within a few miles. OH and it rattles like a ten year old Skoda, something which the same 3(THREE) dealers cant fix or even find I Would welcome any constructive comments, as I'd love to get it sorted as I relied on the range being WLTP figures to be somewhere near accurate and they clearly are NOT.
My E300de can easily run over 40km only in battery mode. Usually I can get 47km on E-mode (Highway + City). But with AC on, lights on, wipers on and iPhone charging, the range really drops... My electric top range was 82km in a total of 109km (mountain road). I charge the batteries everyday on a standard socket at 2,2 Kw over the night. With 18000kms done, the consumption is around 4L per Km.

I just cannot understand why anyone would pay £50k for this dismal compromise full of old technology. You can buy a Tesla Model 3 long range for £5k less (350 miles EV range), or many other cheaper alternatives. Jag I-Pace is not much more. These premium hybrids are poor value, times have moved on
It’s total rubbish that you have to pay for expensive packs for features that we expect to be standard fit like keyless entry, Apple Car Play/Android Auto and even traffic sign recognition which are included in so-called non-premium brands.
