Wonka Is Hot Garbage (Review)

- Wonka starring Timothee Chalamet opened to mostly good reviews by critics however after watching Wonka for myself i couldn't help but feel let down by the films mediocrity. In this Wonka review I go over why the movie played it too safe and really didn't bring much to the table in any department. Which is sad because after the terrible year of cinema we've had I was looking forward to Wonka especially with Timothee Chalamet playing him, but at the end of the day the movie just didn't offer much and felt basic, phoned in and lazy.

I can see why some may find this film fun and lighthearted but to me there was no substance at all and that just ruined it. A terrible waste of great talent, but if you liked it personally I’m glad and I can kinda understand why. But it’s not for me.
I find it funny how you frame it like Timothy didn’t suck his character is was written terribly but for Ariel it’s eh she did whatever. And it was chalked up to Halle being a whatever actress not a possibility that the character was written surface level. Just interesting…
I think the whole film could be saved by just adding a final end credit scene set in the future...
Where Charlie Bucket looks at Wonka and asks "is that really how you started", and Wonka replies, "Oh yes my dear boy". Charlie looks to an elderly Umpa lumpa for confirmation who says "is that a true and accurate account of how Mr Wonka came to have a monopolistic hold on the chocolate market, lowering his labour costs by using an enslaved workforce?" (Wonka shoots him a stern look) "um, I'd say there might have been a couple of embellishments".
Well, what movie released in this past year did you enjoy?
You guys seem to make it a point to declare everything trash and woke now - just so you can put it up on your channels.
Thank you for you hateful review. Although your negativity is well thought out, I feel your review is a waste of time and talent. Perhaps a new line of work would suit you better.

This movie surprised me in a good way. It wasn’t a waste of time and didn’t feel like a cash grab. Well acted, thoughtful, and heartwarming.

Oh. I thought I just had no taste. I liked every moment of it. The only thing that sat wrong with me was the oompa loompa plot line. It just didn’t sit right with me.

The Depp version was a totally different type of film. It was almost like he set up all the kids for their sins, like the films seven or saw, but with a tasty and sweet non fatal punishment.
Should’ve been fatal
The depp version was more faithful to the books
The Depp movie makes it clear that the whole tour was a test of character for the five children. Wonka repeatedly tells all of them not to touch anything, and gives a (vague) warning about what may happen if they do, but the four bad kids flippantly disobey him. Both the Wilder version and the Depp version are great movies that I hope to share with my future kids - the Wilder version for its bittersweet exuberance, the Depp version for its Dante-esque life lessons and dark humor. I don't think I'll bother with the Chalamet flick, which appears to have none of these qualities.
Let's be real Depp's Wonka gave serious pedo vibes 😂
@@theoutsiderjess4869So? Who even remembers the book? Gene's version is really the definitive version and the one most people have always loved and remembered.
The Johnny Depp version is actually as close to the book you can get. Roal Dahl absolutely hated the gene wilder version, and said it was nothing like he wrote about including wonka. The Depp version was actually being produced by Roal's wife. Willy Wonka isn't supposed to be whimsical or charismatic at all! He's a genius and an anti-social outcast who doesn't like people and is socially awkward. I'd look into the Depp version deeper, because there's a lot more hidden details and story that did far better than Gene's version.
Yeah that’s actually true it was the most faithful especially in world building too I think
I'm glad to hear this since I actually prefer Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka
Meh i wasn't a fan of depps version... Genes version i feel is better... Depps version was ok but wasn't for me an i like depps movies alot.
I still don't understand that I feel like I'm the only one who read the book where is the chapter where Willy Wonka says you have to leave your family behind and Charlie refuses and then we go and visit willy wonkas father who is a dentist and how does being more loyal to the book make it a better movie
I didn't mind the Johnny Depp Wonka but his Dr. Evil voice kinda ruined it. That and the Oompa loompas being all one person.
I actually really loved it. Even my dad who was skeptical about it enjoyed it. I went in not expecting much but I was surprised. When it comes to comparing Chalamet's version of Wonka to Gene Wilder's version, we have to remember Chalamet's role was that of a younger, optimistic, genuinely happy and just starting out Wonka. Meanwhile Wilder's version was more jaded and experienced.
Everyone has their own opinion as for mine, the movie was delightful and the songs were actually pretty catchy
I was entertained. I had no expectations I would enjoy it so much.
The world is so hellish right now, I really needed the magic and beauty and humor.

You literally cleared the confusion yourself. Wonka is like 19 in this film, he’s 45 in Gene Wilders version. There’s 20 plus years to pass…a lot can happen. You cannot go into this movie expecting it to be Gene Wilders same wonka…it’s not. You can connect the dots to Genes which is great. The movie was really good. As 37 year old guy that thoroughly loves the OG Wilder movies, this movie did everything for me in my expectations. There’s a reason it’s getting great reviews…it’s pretty good!

@@Magicmatty2024 What lol? Boring and flat? buddy there are hot takes, then there's you, with the most garbage take i've seen on this movie so far. Timothee gave off serious Mad Hatter vibes with his Wonka and i loved it.
I thought it was great. Timothee Chalamet was perfect. I enjoyed a lot of the new characters, even the villains. That's where so many movies fall short these days. They forget to make us actually care about the characters or invest in them in any way, for better or worse. It was funny, and I loved the soundtrack. The music stands up to the original.
I love how they depicted a multiracial victorian society.
Timmeh sucks. An actual actor might have made this a worthwhile endeavor. Instead, it is just another misfire to put money in the estate of a bigot.
Peter Dinklage is awfully quiet about this 😂

That single, pathetic, small amount of a man, destroyed the little career oportunities available for thousands of actors with similar conditions in Hollywood. I will never forget about it and will never support anything he does.
He's patting himself on the back for what he said about snow white he's secured his position as the only dwarf who can get a job as an actor.
I was honestly kinda confused when I heard that the producers got criticized for NOT hiring with dwarfism, because with Snow White I heard that they specifically did not hire them, because it would be offensive?
Now what is offensive? Hiring short people for such roles or NOT hiring them? I can't keep up lol
Call me an elf one more time?
Nope: this film surprised and left me leaving the theater smiling. I was very skeptical at first, but damn it the main actor and the entire cast won me over
I think the comment about Wonka not becoming darker by the end of the film really is unfair. I wouldn't have expected him to do so as in the original film he didn't become jaded and isolated from the world until rival chocolatiers infiltrated his factory and tried to steal his secrets. By the end of this film Wonka had barely started selling chocolates to the public. It would take time for him to become adored by the world and then have him resent them for trying to steal the secrets rather than just appreciate him. It almost seems like people want to hate on the film for any reason possible.
wonka is a gary stu in this film. perfect, bland and boring.
@@GotoMaki4MicahSounds like you've rotten your brain from too many MCU movies.
I agree with you. I was very disappointed that they didn't explain the Oompa Loompas at all. They were just there. Gene Wilder had more than one Oompa Loompa. Disagreement rejected. Timmeh sucks.
@@Attmay, why is that? If you don't give evidence, then your argument doesn't work.
The world did *not* need a movie that explores Wonka's backstory. It ruins the mystique of the character. Even Gene Wilder understood there had to be an air of mystery and uncertainty about the character.
Ah yes but I remember saying the same thing when ‘Joker’ was announced, I was very wrong there.
@@stevenesbitt3528 Actually, you weren't.
I would have prefer that they explore the part of willy Wonka's past whenhe has to deal with spies or when he has to made orders for important people like when he has to build a chocolate castle for this prince
Gene Wilder specifically played that role as if he was keeping secrets. There was always an unnerving element about the character on whether or not one could trust him. This was evident from the very first time we saw Wonka. We were meant to believe that Wonka was a cripple. Then there was the fall, roll, and jump, and we find that it was deception. Seeing his backstory is tantamount to going backstage of a magic show and discovering the magician's methods of trickery. It kills all mystique and wonder.
the mystique? dude its a movie not a history class, nothing was ruined. You can live your life without seeing the movie.
Origin stories are so boring. They've been deconstructing everything for the past 40 years, the novelty has worn off.
Also they don’t even show he got good at making chocolate I want to find that out I don’t care how he was able to afford the lease of his first shop 😂
I loved this movie, the world is dark as it is and this whole movie gave me that bit of hapiness and hopefulness that is incredibly difficult to find today. The music was great too.
Additionally, yes it was whimsical and bright and showed Willy at his brightest before he became the hermit who doesnt like people, which gives Warner Bros. the perfect opportunity to make a sequel prequel that is darker and sadly shows what the catalyst for Willy's change in demeanor. Chalamet can actually continue to play the part for many years to even ultimately do a remake of the 1971 movie (not that i want that, but thats how studios do). If he doesnt want to play the darker version, they can get someone else probably. The possibilities are endless.
Ultimately I really loved the movie, music, and everything involved it is the best original fanfiction Ive ever seen!
Totally agree with your comments. I loved the movie. I've had friends who have seen it that said their theaters clapped at the end.
The catalyst is his lonlyness, his coping mechanism to get chocolates everywhere by extention fixing all the worlds problems. Not feasible, impossible and detatched from reality. But he tries and loses his mind in his grand cubibcle of large suffocating ideas.
It's not supposed to be a Willy movie…
@@notwwwansik Why?

I can see Wonka becoming more cynical the longer he is in the chocolate business. If they do decide to do another story maybe then can show how his new friends may have betrayed him for his competition. It would make sense because I think Wonka closed his factory to people when workers started to sell his secrets.
Is the story bad? Are the musical numbers bad? Why is it hot garbage?
Wonka did not become a cynic and a semi dark figure until his human factory
workers started stealing his secrets and selling them to his competitors, which takes

Completely agreed, went in with low expectations and very much enjoyed it
@@mattb2906went in with high expectations, enjoyed it
I think the issue I had with the film was that Wonka was more of a magician, who could literally do magic, rather than someone who had explored every corner of the world looking for new things to put in his chocolates. The character was just magical, rather than a great innovator. It came down to being about who he naturally was, rather than what he strived to achieve.
Excellent point. Part of what made Wonka interesting originally was that he accomplished all his confections WITHOUT magic, just innovation. I guess that's no longer allowed.
He referenced the unique ingredients he worked hard to get many times in the movie, just said he used to want to be a magician, hence the magic chocolate
@@mattb2906 The use of Giraffe milk made sense for a traditional Willy Wonka, but pulling a picnic out of your top hat with a full kettle of hot chocolate falls into magic territory. As does using literal potions of bottled lightning to make the chocolates. However Yeti sweat and its effects are so well known, that Mrs Scrubitt has some readily available. I didn't mind the film, I wasn't expecting a musical heist movie, I just didn't like the shift of Willy Wonka into a magician.
He also didn't seem to be very bothered about being broke... as though he didnt' need money and had other WAYS to survive and be content.@@ExeFBM
I get that but the original Wonka movie had wacky moments, almost impossible moments in them. Dude had an entire chocolate river that you could down on in a boat traveling at super fast speeds. As this movie was an origin story, there was no need to make it dark. There is, and should be, a big difference between a wide eyed young person and a mature, jaded Chocolatier. This movie echoed the Gene Wilder version in the best way. I went to see this movie because of the cast and the filmmaker, and was absolutely vindicated in that trust.
It really blows my mind that despite all the advances in lighting, film, light sensors, glass, cameras, color grading, and editing that we've had since the original Willy Wonka movie, somehow each time they try to remake it the visuals look more and more like visual barf.

Dahl's stories are only tolerable when filtered through the lens of those he hated. I'd rather see a movie showing just how nasty he was to the makers of that classic movie. If that shitty movie that enabled Julie Andrews' film career was worthy of a making-of movie (it wasn't), *Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory* is worthy of 10 making-of movies, each one making Roald Dahl more villainous than the one before. I think that it doesn’t matter if it’s not correct according to the source material, it’s better to just detach yourself and have fun with the movie y’know. Not to say you shouldn’t feel how you do, everyone feels differently about popular new media :)
I agree
I must've watched a different movie than you did...because I was thoroughly entertained the whole way through
I agree with you.
Same here. I think the prequel works with his character
It was trash
It’s got an 80 something from critics and a 90 something from audiences, I think most people who don’t like it are outliers.
@@snakecharmer3587 YEEEES
Wonka is a prequel but different version of the character. You said that he is completely the same happy guy at the end as he was in the beginning but didnt mention how hard the protagonists try to take that away from him nearly succeeding. He gets locked in a contract, banned from selling, has his stuff stolen, basically losing all the time but still maintains a positive attitude and eventually that is what gets other people to notice and be on his side. It is through his passion for chocolate that his mom introduced him to that made him happy and hopeful. Something good he carried since he was a kid helped him get to where he was.
I am totally with you on this. I don't understand why people are comparing it to the quite remarkable Gene Wilder movie. Yes - of course it's the same person, but it's the very much younger version of him before he has become cynical and, frankly, unpleasant. It shows his determination to fight for what he wants to do, which is to make chocolate. Why on earth are people saying that he doesn't end up as the Gene Wilder version at the end? Because I have no doubt that there will be a Wonka 2 which shows how he changed into a rather unpleasant person. Hugh Grant is notoriously cynical and jokey about everything he does - those comments were meant to be taken that way. To me, this is a wonderful movie and totally NOT to be compared to the other two, as it has nothing to do with them
A lot of modern-day movie protags are all the same: they're all amazing and perfect and the best at whatever they do, and the only obstacle is some big, mean, oppressive third party that "keeps them down", and all they have to do is realize how awesome they are to save the day
When it a women yes but if a man he has faults and I think it is very human thing to have faults I hate forced inclusion but jus feels like with Wonka they really trying to make it sound worse than what it is I actually saw it and came out thinking wasn't quite what I was expecting but was a pretty charming movie great one to c wiv the family all people want to do is hate everything now especially if it Disney and I am at a point where I'm sick of both sides of the culture war
I’m sorry, I respect that and get what your saying, but do you just hate fun? Who cares? Not everything needs an incredible story. What about paddington? That movie was incredibly similar to this one and is a fun and good movie. I think wonka is just a fun and enjoyable musical experience.
I'm done with new movies.
Me, too. I want the studios closed down, especially Disney and WB.
I’m just so sick of studios refusing to try anything that hasn’t already been established since the 80s-00s
Grow a pair and start being inventive again, Hollywood
What’s next, the backstory of the King of Naboombu from *Bedknobs and Broomsticks* and how his ancestors killed the man who made them human?
I don't buy Timothée Chalamet as Gene Wilder's younger Wonka. Jeremy Allen White would have been perfect in the role.
Wonka will probably do well because of the star-studded cast and it looks like the safest family film for December. It also ties into candy sales. Even though Timothy’s take on Wonka is quirky-but-shallow.
All the movies have been used to sell candy. I wish they’d start making movie musicals to promote the carnivore diet. Maybe then that would start to undo some of the damage that common guttersnipe Julie Andrews has done.
I smiled my whole way through the film tbh
Timothée Chalamet "Talented", "Amazing" I beg to differ sr he has the charisma of a rock
you're entitled to your wrong opinion
your right, a rock has more charisma, my bad@@jawsh6044
Agree: a diamond is also a rock.
I'll back you up on this. chalamet isn't nearly as talented as others give him credit. All the people giving you grief just have a kink for twinks
Thank you. I never want to see him or anyone from *Barfbie* in anything again, and that movie where Tom Hanks put on an Eddie Murphy-esque fatsuit and a Dick Van Dyke-esque Dutch accent to play Elvis' agent will be the last new movie from Warner Bros. I ever see again. It's certainly the last time I'll ever see a Spaz, whoops I mean Baz Lurhmann movie again.
Just to be clear, hugh grant was expressing he hated playing the roll because they had to use motion capture and he said the suit was uncomfortable lmao. He said “it was like a crown of thorns, very uncomfortable. I made a big fuss about it I couldn’t have hated the whole thing more.”
He took work from actual little people who should’ve played the Oompa Loompas, and he knows it. This is discrimination.
Thanks for preaching the truth! Anyone who says they liked this movie is either a child or trolling 💯
Or a shill for David Zaslav.
It sounds like this movie took a page out of Emma Stone's Cruella by white washing Willy Wonka's character and making him a more PG version of his original self.
I actually like the idea of him not straight up being a recluse or cynic when he’s still a young man. Practically a kid himself really. I would have thought his innovative inventions and creativity would require him being whimsical and positive in his youth, before people started stealing his ideas. It allows room for plenty of character development seeing him transition from upbeat and positive to tired and cynical. If he was just a young Gene Wilder from the start, it would have been extraordinarily lazy writing.
This movie is absolutely fantastic and despite how doubtful everyone was I had no doubts about this movie for one reason and one reason only. The director Paul King. The man made Paddington 2 I refuse to believe he would put out anything remotely low quality.
I liked both versions of Willy Wonka, Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp and the book too. All have their own merits so a real shame this one is no good 😢
Go see it before you accept this guy’s review as truth. I loved the original, enjoyed Depp’s, but liked this way more than Depp
@@mattb2906 I will watch it when you can rent it at home not at the cinema
because you have no standards for quality, or a quality compass, you need to get that liking does not equal quality, you can like it but that doesn't mean the movie is hot garbage if you review it for what it is itself with no bias, learn that not everything revolves around you, self centered dumbo, this movie is just another flop that completely spits on the two past movies, and thats truth, this review is nothing but truth and if u dont like the truth well get out of here, we dont always need to go see a movie to know its gonna be garbage or not, the trailers already say enough how bad this movie is @@mattb2906
A good character usually has a great flaw that they can't see and usually by the end either that flaw has destroyed them or has changed them
The role was too big for Timothy..
It's so Diverse, that a Normal Sized Hugh Grant is cast as an Oompa Loompa.
Personally, I'm not surprised, ungh... 😞
oh ? i am sad to hear there is no dark edge to wonka. :/
When I saw the thumbnail and read the title of the video I literally said out loud “REALLY” as in shock and confusion and curiosity
Will they ever make original movies again .. saw there's even a new kung fu panda not shure for the better yet
I hadn't seen the previous versions, nor read the books. I quite enjoyed it, pretty light hearted and fun, with a bit of darkness. A good Xmas film.
Your parents did you dirty lol go watch the original
This was a excellent movie. Top notch production.
yah
I took my nieces and loved it too. Not the greatest but it still made me smile throughout
It wasnt. It looked nice but was lacking any magic and the woke was way OTT.
@@maccagrabmewhat woke?
I mean the director took the script he didn't have it revised If he had a problem with it he should have done it in the beginning
Did you ever think that this movie shows Wonka as a young kid who is charismatic and looking to make the world a better place but then over time he gets depressed because he’s lonely and feels like the world has become too greedy which is why he acts the way he does in the 1971 version? He decides to look for someone to take over the business but wants a kid who is humble and is willing to “dream”. If you take the time to really look into it this movie sets up the 1971 version in a beautiful way
Wow a big Hollywood movie is a load of boring trash? In 2023!? I am shocked! Shocked I tell you! .. Well not that shocked.
I’m never watching a new movie that isn’t animated again. At least not one from this country or any other NATO terrorist shithole.
Why even remake the classic?
as soon as I saw the trailer I knew it would be burning garbage
Hugh Grant playing a pervert? No Huway🙄
Couldn't disagree with you more. This movie was the best movie I have seen since Paddington 2 - for me an absolute classic!
Your main criticism is that it isn’t dark enough, there is nothing wrong with a happy uplifting interpretation of Willy wonka, why should we always compare different iterations instead of appreciating how they all bring something different to the table but still being the same in essence?
Yes, this is exactly what I think about this movie. Like who the hell cares if no kids almost die? Just have fun and enjoy the fun chocolate movie
Like doesn’t he become dark after years and years of making chocolate in the factory? So why would he be dark now?
@@pumpkin_k1ng cause his darkness is a huge part of the identity of the movie, so any viewers appreciating the original are going to feel its missing that. and chalamets casting very much suggests they are going to explore that aspect given hes a drama focused actor not happy-go lucky kids movie actor
How do you think people become dark? They nearly die in their own factory bones and then loose their best friend to making their dreams come true
That would make an interesting take on *Laverne & Shirley.*
I hope Hugh had a fun time doing The Gentlemen, because he was phenomenal and it looked like he was having fun with the role.
I saw the trailer and was immediately put off by it, the look of everything was too bright and whimsical for what I could have gotten.
And that damn bostonian accent jumped out at me of one of the bad guys.
Go watch it then report back!
@@mattb2906 trailers are meant to get you interested in a movie, when a trailer makes it so that you are actively repulsed by the idea of the movie, the trailer has failed to do its job and the movie will fail to be a thing worth watching. the "but go watch it you dunno if you leik it" is such a lazy take on this, no I will not consume something that bores or insults me, I am not a consoomer.
The fact that "x" director gets involved in a project means no longer anything to me unless it's Tarantino or Nolan. Directors nowadays are casted like actors for giving a shade of colour in the bland and grey corporate sludge they fed us.
Good god, Hollywood. MAKE NEW STORIES!!
This is a new story, just with an old character.
@@Lutherstrode17492What new story this movie is a prequel
I would have prefer that they explore the part of willy Wonka's past whenhe has to deal with spies or when he has to made orders for important people like when he has to build a chocolate castle for this prince
Wonka.........more like Wanka
''Umpa Lumpa doopity doo, is this film a piece of poo'... 💩
Wonka is a DEI non-sense. They made Wonka out to be an illiterate idiot. He's one-dimensional and is nowhere near as sly, witty, or smart as the original. The original Wonka would have been tricked intentionally, outsmarted, and saved all those slaves in the shop while punishing that couple.
Of course Hugh Grant said he didn't enjoy playing the part. If he talked effusively about how he enjoyed playing the part that would hurt his ego and reputation. He has to act like he didn't enjoy it to save face. Maybe you don't quite get this English psychology.
Also, Wonka's skills didn't exactly come from nowhere. Granted, he did possess some innate skills. But he had to practice making chocolate with very limited resources as his mother could only afford a handful of cocoa beans. This was part of the whole moral message of the film, that chocolate is a very special magical experience that you share with your closest family and friends on special occasions, rather than being greedy.
I thought it was very entertaining and funnier than most recent comedies. I didn't think the Wonka actor would be able to pull it off but he plays the role in a very confident way and so does all the cast. It could easily be turned into another musical. Noodles' actress is also outstanding. I loved it❤
I haven't seen the film yet, but I sat and watched all the available trailers and, I dunno. I haven't seen Timothée Chalamet in anything before, but he just wasn't Wonka enough for this. I'd watch Hugh Gran'ts oompa loompa all day long, though.
Go see it and report back. I also hadn’t seen in him in anything and very much enjoyed the movie
@@mattb2906I’d rather eat one of Slugworth’s candies than sit through this.
Not sure why they didnt make a sequal with Charlie running the factory. Then flash backs with Wonka teaching charlie🤔🤔
I thought the movie was decent and also not dark enough? Did we watch the same movie? They were plotting to KILL Wonka and not only that but the little girl in the movie (spoiler alert) he was gonna kill her off too just to keep the family fortune. There was a whole backstory where he throws her down a laundry chute as a BABY. This movie went from lighthearted in the beginning with his optimism, then he gets slapped in the face by the real world and how it works by being scammed into being those people's slave, then a whole bunch of shit happens where he tries to stay optimistic, then the Chocolate people fucked over his business and almost had him killed. Like the story got dark in some areas. Movie was great, the music was great, everything about the movie was a gem that felt like I was watching a live action cartoon. You movie reviewers bash on actual good movies and try your damnest to tell people how bad it is when it isn't and your review on the movie is false they weren't playing it safe when dude held a gun to Wonka and the little girl and tried to drown them in chocolate but you don't mention that part. Stop doing movie reviews my guy because you spout negativity to something actually good and you sit there and say that there's no risk, no dark tones, they play it safe but fail to mention how the chief of police was being bribed into "shutting up" Willy Wonka so that the other chocolatiers won't have any competition. Jesus Christ man it's fine if you didn't like it but don't make review videos saying shit that's false and let other people watch it and make their own opinions of it
I’m sorry, but if you thought this movie was going to be good or even watchable, that’s on you. This looked terrible from the moment I saw the first trailer
The casting of the star of a n@z¡ p3d0 movie makes it completely unwatchable, and any defense of it complicity in child abuse and antisemitism.
This was a great movie and I really enjoyed it. I took my whole family and all of us enjoyed it..
But compared with the Gene Wilder version, not even close.
If you're baby then movie good, movie not for adult. Hoping to spark that childlike wonder. No, just scrubbing dirty, chocolate stained drawers.
