My family watched it on Friday and loved it. It was so refreshing to just see a fun family film. The acting was great, the songs were well put together and harmonious with the world and story, and the aesthetic was extremely pleasing. I think a lot of great things came together here in a way that most movies can only hope for. Also, on the note of the music, it was so awesome to see a musical where the songs were so tied into the story and even into the little things happening on screen. One of my favorite RUclipsrs, Jenny Nicholson, made a video about The Greatest Showman in which she pointed out that that movie has all original songs, but they are so poorly tied to any of the details of the film’s story that it feels like a jukebox musical. Wonka definitely achieved the opposite of that, with a soundtrack full of fun songs that justify their existence and placement in the film and can easily be tied back to their source. I give Wonka a well deserved round of applause on all fronts.

😂😂l Loved this movie sooooo much 🙏 Timothy did a fantastic job of portraying Wonka I mean the whole movie was amazing but I love the last 15 minutes of it when Wonka started singing it brought tears to my eyes I really started crying a happy cry of course but I saw the original when I was 10 years old so this brought a special meaning to me in my heart congratulations to meet you for bringing Wonka to life thank you very much I can't wait to see it again
Saw it early Friday morning. was pleasantly surprised how well it was done. Was it a perfect movie? No. Was it good and entertaining? Yes. I would give it a solid 7.5 out of 10. I was also very surprised by the amount of singing, and that many of the songs were actually very good. I think kids will find this the most appealing. It would also not surprise me if they come out with 2-3 more follow up movies.
I am so happy because I wanted it to be good. I was a little sceptical but the film was really enjoyable. Timothee surprised me, too, because in the trailer I thought he was just okay, but in the movie he was very charming and I also really likes his voice.
Saw this on Friday and I thought it was brilliant! I laughed, i cried, I loved the nods back to the original whilst also enjoying the new. Did not know Timothy at all but wow just wow! So glad i went to see it.
I was not very exited to see it at first but after watching it it’s amazing it’s a good balance of happy and sad for sure my favorite movie this year .
Honestly, it was a nice film to see. I went to the theatre with my family, and enjoyed it very much. Despite it has some differences with the book, it was actually quite accurate, and a good way of portraying such a beloved character. I kinda missed watching these kind of movies. Hope they continue like this! I´m looking forward to seeing a Charlie and the chocolate factory movie soon!
I rolled my eyes to heaven and back when he started singing, as I also had no idea it was a musical, but the songs and music were so good! 'Sweet Tooth', 'Scrub scrub,' 'A Hatful of Dreams' and 'For a Moment', I was completely won over by the end of it. I also loved the little musical nods back to the original film. It was lovely!
IM SO GLAD. I’m a CatCF fan of 8 years, my fav is Johnny depp!!! The references to both versions are insane and awesome, and I love the fact that it gives room for the backstory given in 2005:))) I also think the villains and supporting characters are stellar and each given interesting characteristics. If you’ve ever liked 1971 or 2005 for any amount of time, you should watch it!!
I'm not the biggest movie fan, but went to see this with no expectations. I was surprised how much I laughed and was crying at the end. The songs were written by Neil Hannon (The Divine Comedy), whose music I love, so shouldn't have been a surprise how much I did enjoy them (didn't realise he had done them until later).
one of my favorite movies of the year & also might just be my favorite version of wonka, gene wilder & timothee chalamet are very close. i felt like a young kid leaving this theater, it really makes you feel so much joy i couldn't stop smiling, it was just beautiful. i know people had their doubts about this, but i wanted to give it a chance, im a massive wonka fan so i did, i was not let down
Kids loved it and begged to see it again so off we went. Just as much fun the 2nd time. I love the Gene Wilder original and this new Wonka holds the same charm.
Up until yesterday night, I've never known Willy Wonka. I didn't hear anything about the movie or watched any previews prior. I never knew this movie existed. I never knew whom Timothee was. I didn't even care about what I was going to watch that night. But once I watched that movie last night, I felt magic. 🎇
I was pleasantly surprised about Timothee Chalamet's performance but I was really impressed by Paterson Joseph's portrayal as Slugworth. He must have had a blast with the role. And Keegan-Michael Key was hilarious. That role reminded me a lot of Sacha Baron Cohen's role as the inspector in Hugo.
I remember when the movie started and the singing began i was like oh now 😤 but what changed it for me was when he was dancing outside the vacant shop and the cop was staring at him i was like YES! I love it! 😂
Excellent review! I couldn’t agree more with you. I took my 7 year old grandson to see “Wonka” and we both throughly enjoyed it. The Film had everything as you say including a tear towards the end. To sum it up it had the Feel Good Factor! (Wonderful Wonka!).👍🏻
One of the best reviews on RUclips! You said everything that eas on my mind for my reasons to live this movie! Absolutely loved this movie! It does what I think the audience wants to see (me a 24 years old woman) wanting to go to the cinema and watch a fun, magic movie that brings a little bit of that nostalgia feeling too! And this movie hit every spot! I mean, the story was so funny while the songs and the whole cinematography of the songs made me feel like I was watching a broadway musical, then boom back to movie again when the songs were over. So yeah, for me this was also one of the best movies I’ve watched in the last few months.
This and the Dungeons and Dragons movie were my lessons in seeing stuff fir yourself and not just blindly following youtube reviewers! I saw so many people saying that DND was gonna be woke garbage with horrible writing, and I didn't wanna see it after that especially with Mario movie hype going around, but my dad wanted to and took me with him and THAT was a damn good movie, I may not have enjoyed it as much as Mario as an absolute diehard Mario fan but it was objectively a little better tbh. Now, for Wonka, I saw a lot of memes going on with the trailers and making fun of the casting, and once again my dad (The film opinion HERO) Dragged me to it and I had a blast, this was so cute, the songs were amazing, the ending emotionally destroyed me with Noodle and Willy's mother stories. And it was just a fun time I wish was even more popular rn.
I was curious before, but now I’m excited to see it. Because of health problems, I’ll have to wait to see it at home on some medium or another, but it looks like it would really benefit from a larger screen
I've been waiting for it since I first saw trailers a few months back, now I'm definitely going to try to see it today since you just Saud it's a musical as well
i kinda hate the criticism this movie gets bc its not the wonka we know (refering to the 70s more jaded version). what we see in this film is how wonka eccentric personality and drive to become a chocolate maker and the absurd way of establishing himself which plays on his colorful nature and highlights his vision before he became jaded.
Yeah, Timothy captured Gene's Wonka very well. You can easily see the older, weary Wonka that Wilder introduced us to, being this young, energetic, idealistic Wonka Chalamet gives us.
my mom only went to see wonka because hugh grant's in it, and i'm so glad she convinced me to go with her. it's not a perfect movie by any means, but it was enjoyable and fun to watch. sadly none of the songs really stuck with me, even if i thought they were pretty decent.
Wonderful, Wonderful movie. Brings back to the screen a quality that has been missing for so long, Zany Charm. Great Cast, production values, sets, music, songs, costumes, everything. and as for the Man himself, well, Chalamet shines in Wonka Wonderland.
I really enjoyed the Wonka movie. It was funny, had characters that I really liked and it just was fun to watch with my family. I liked how the Oompa Loompas was similar to the ones from the Gene Wilder movie. It felt nostalgic? I don't know. That's just my thoughts.
Completely agree. Honestly one of the most wholesome and endearing films I've seen in a long while. No woke nonsense and just delivers what it sets out to do.
I saw the movie today and I loved it. My mom and dad were with me and equally enjoyed it. My mom in particular had seen the Gene Wilder movie, so the nostalgia was big there, definitely with that final scene.
I went in this movie blind i knew nothing, but the fact it is an origin story for Willy Wonka. I loved the movie. I loved how the strange a magical things in the movie felt like they were just a normal thing in the world of the movie.
I really really loved it. I was worried at first when the trailer came out, and thought it would be a flop, but I was pleasantly surprised just how good it was. Is it Paddington 1/2 good? No. But it's absolutely a new classic for my daughter. My daughter and I have been listening to the soundtrack non stop and humming our favourite songs all day. I think the best thing to do as a viewer is separate yourself from the Gene Wilder Wonka, as just like the Depp Wonka, they are not connected in any way. This isn't the same Wonka that turns into the WIlder Wonka that we love. The world is different, the magic/whimsy is different, even the city, country, and currency is set in an all new setting that isn't American or European (even though the accents lead to believe 1940's UK)...Hell, even Mr. Slugworth is a completely different person with a different role in this world. If you go into this believing that this is a whole new story, that does not lead a direct path to Gene Wilder, you will likely enjoy it much more.
I personally think that Paul King is the kind (no pun intended) of family movies. I loved the Paddington movies and this one turned out awesome, I hope he keeps making more
I really loved it! Timothy was excellent and his singing was really good. I loved the original movie and was a little skeptical about Wonka but I thoroughly enjoyed it!
I LOVE when movies have my expectations so low. While it doesn't make the movie great it becomes much more enjoyable when it's good. In the last handful of years movie that stick out for me that I thought I would hate but ended up loving, the 1st Shazam, the 1st Aquaman, the power rangers movie (really liked but didn't love) Barbie and of course Wonka. I guess honorable mention to Godzilla minus one. I didn't have low expectations but I also didn't think I would "love" it
Was expecting another case of Johnney Depp's remake, but I wasn't left disappointed. It branched out more on the Gene Wilder adaptation and told its own story instead in a little commedic way.
I’ve said the exact same thing you have to myself, I expected such low things from this movie and over all thought it was just a plain cash grab but yesterday I went to see it and oh boy all of those expectations left, this felt too Roahl Dahl with the factor of magic and that anything can be possible, it fit wonka perfectly and I just loved it
There is so much stigma around being a remakes or a prequel or a sequel to a beloved property. And it is kind of deserved right like especially when Disney went through their live action remakes phase right as they were pumping out garbage sequels to star wars. I get why people hate them. But like also don't write off a movie just because it is one. Right like I didn't see wonka till I had a few people recommend it as a fun whimsical movie in which case I saw it and I really enjoyed it. Like I get the importance of making original properties and I agree with the sentiment but I also think it is just as good if someone can tell a new fun interesting story with an already existing property. This movie is just delightful and so fun I actually love it.
I know no one asked for it, but it was sooooo much better than the 2005 one, I honestly think my favorite character was noodle. She’s literally a genius.
I took it for granted that the setting was a fictionalized take on 1930s London. That would make sense, as many of the minor characters in the 1971 film are British and the '71 Wonka would have been a young man in the '30s.
I really loved this movie because it literally brought closure to the original movie with Gene Wilder. My imaginary plot to Slugworth with Noodle: What if Noodle married a caucasian man and gave birth to the Slugworth of the late 1970's? These 2 actually partnered because Noodle never forgot that Wonka kept his word and saved Noodle's life plus got her out of the the servitude life with the Scrubs. I believe Noodle's son, Slugworth, partnered with Mr. Wonka to find a young boy with a pure heart to inherit Mr Wonka's chocolate factory. I believe the reason he partnered with Noodle's son was because he couldn't trust his human employees after he found out what they did to him. My question to this situation is why Wonka did not have his employees sign a confidentiality agreement on the condition of their employment. It seems a bit cynical but not really when we find out what his previous employees betrayed him for financial gain in his past. Even if people reply to this comment, I am keeping this plot line to justify the ending to the Gene Wilder's, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
Did it need to exist? No.
Am I glad it exists? Yes
Did I have fun watching it? Absolutely
Unnecessary doesn’t equal bad
I mean theoretically any story or film isn't necessary. But do we like them? Yes. Yes we do.

i saw it twice by myself before it even released stateside & am considering seeing it again with other ppl while it's still in cinemas. so good.
I went and watched it last weekend it was amazing
I am so happy because I wanted it to be good. I was a little sceptical but the film was really enjoyable. Timothee surprised me, too, because in the trailer I thought he was just okay, but in the movie he was very charming and I also really likes his voice.
Saw this on Friday and I thought it was brilliant! I laughed, i cried, I loved the nods back to the original whilst also enjoying the new.
Did not know Timothy at all but wow just wow! So glad i went to see it.
Holy shit this cast looks insane. A lot of British favs
I was not very exited to see it at first but after watching it it’s amazing it’s a good balance of happy and sad for sure my favorite movie this year .
I watched it…and now I’ve been listening to the soundtrack nonstop.
This movie is a huge uplift!
Literally outstanding 🎉
Everyone was hating when the trailers were released, but I knew it would be good
Yeah, I figured that the movie would be good too. I am not sure what it is about the trailer that people did not like.
Thank you for making this review. We saw it and loved it despite all the cynicism and skepticism. Great fun film.
I now have a soft spot for it since I went on my first date to see this movie, we both loved it and I can’t stop listening to the soundtrack
It was such a great movie. I'd love to see it again
one of my favorite movies of the year & also might just be my favorite version of wonka, gene wilder & timothee chalamet are very close.
i felt like a young kid leaving this theater, it really makes you feel so much joy i couldn't stop smiling, it was just beautiful. i know people had their doubts about this, but i wanted to give it a chance, im a massive wonka fan so i did, i was not let down
This was such a fun movie, so uplifting, cute, and made me smile a lot. It's like therapy.
Not...a....flop.
A good time at the movies with the family.
I agree, I saw Wonka last night and it was very entertaining and heart warming.
I loved it. I’m also listening to the soundtrack nonstop now!
Kids loved it and begged to see it again so off we went. Just as much fun the 2nd time. I love the Gene Wilder original and this new Wonka holds the same charm.
Up until yesterday night,
I've never known Willy Wonka.
I didn't hear anything about the movie or watched any previews prior.
I never knew this movie existed.
I never knew whom Timothee was.
I didn't even care about what I was going to watch that night.
But once I watched that movie last night, I felt magic. 🎇
timmy tim tim is at it again! 💕
I LOVED it, and my momma took me to see the Gene Wilder version when I was a girlI REALLY loved this!
At least KMK had one good movie in 2023 with *Mario.* I'm seriously giving up on non-animated movies for good after this and the equally vile Barfbie.
It’s crazy, ludicrous, whimsical, silly, looney, I can go on
I remember when the movie started and the singing began i was like oh now 😤 but what changed it for me was when he was dancing outside the vacant shop and the cop was staring at him i was like YES! I love it!
Interestingly my 14 yr daughter said it was ‘meh’. She said it’s not an ‘owner’. And she loves TC, so I was surprised.
I've been waiting for it since I first saw trailers a few months back, now I'm definitely going to try to see it today since you just Saud it's a musical as well
I like the movie a lot. I’m a fan of Chalamet and had confidence he’d pul it off.
i kinda hate the criticism this movie gets bc its not the wonka we know (refering to the 70s more jaded version). what we see in this film is how wonka eccentric personality and drive to become a chocolate maker and the absurd way of establishing himself which plays on his colorful nature and highlights his vision before he became jaded.
Yeah, Timothy captured Gene's Wonka very well. You can easily see the older, weary Wonka that Wilder introduced us to, being this young, energetic, idealistic Wonka Chalamet gives us.
This was an amazing, heartfelt, magical, and fun film, which definitely surpassed my expectations….
my mom only went to see wonka because hugh grant's in it, and i'm so glad she convinced me to go with her.
it's not a perfect movie by any means, but it was enjoyable and fun to watch. sadly none of the songs really stuck with me, even if i thought they were pretty decent.
Scrub, Scrub!!
“Huffy-Wuffy!”
Timothy was amazing as wonka ,i cried near the end 😢,he was fantastic
This film was charmingly delightful! Timothy put his heart into the role of young Willy Wonka.
0:28 *”Is that…..normal chocolate you’re making? It doesn’t look normal, it doesn’t…..taste normal”.*
Wonderful, Wonderful movie. Brings back to the screen a quality that has been missing for so long, Zany Charm. Great Cast, production values, sets, music, songs, costumes, everything. and as for the Man himself, well, Chalamet shines in Wonka Wonderland.
It’s approaching $400 million as of 1/2/2023
Chalamet's drama teachers from LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts are probably beaming with pride! :)
I loved this movie it feels like it can be enjoyed by everyone, even the people who didn’t like the original movie
Kudos, 4 being brave enough to admit u were wrong. I met so many ppl in my life that never admit they were wrong. Or maybe im wrong
He was wrong about being wrong.
Shocked you’re not bothered by the diversity considering you use that word. Ppl like you ruin everything w your backhanded comparisons
Define woke
Woke? Like having gay people 🫣
@@Yo1297You for asking the question.
@@Richcanvas so what’s woke about me
I saw the movie today and I loved it.
This is why people need to not be so serious. People love to hate just after watching a trailer. You'll enjoy things a lot more if your easy goibg
I didn't have low expectations but I also didn't think I would "love" it
Wonka > > > Wish
This felt more Disney than the actual Disney film released this year.
Fun fact, the castle at the end is called Bodium castle, and i love visiting it with my Nana! Next time I’m there I’ll have to ask for some chocolate!
Was expecting another case of Johnney Depp's remake, but I wasn't left disappointed. It branched out more on the Gene Wilder adaptation and told its own story instead in a little commedic way.
i watched this as pepto bismol after watching the nauseating poor things.
She’s literally a genius.
fr I hated the 2005 one
I loved this movie! 10/10!!!
I took it for granted that the setting was a fictionalized take on 1930s London. That would make sense, as many of the minor characters in the 1971 film are British and the '71 Wonka would have been a young man in the '30s.
I really loved this movie because it literally brought closure to the original movie with Gene Wilder.
My imaginary plot to Slugworth with Noodle:
What if Noodle married a caucasian man and gave birth to the Slugworth of the late 1970's?
Movie was good asf🔥
It was well made. I was impressed!
