- On this episode of Cal’s Week in Review: In the Field, MeatEater’s Director of Conservation Ryan Callaghan heads to the Zumwalt Preserve, which is 37,000 acres of bunch grass prairie that look like heaven at first glance. Owned and operated by the Nature Conservancy, bow and rifle hunting are used as tools in the elk management plan. Hunters move elk around the prairie to prevent overgrazing and mitigate the presence of invasive weeds. Although Cal is the only hunter on the preserve with a bull tag-open terrain and large wary herds make hunting these elk more like hell. In the end he puts the pieces together and earns it the hard way.

The diversity of this land is spectacular. Rarely do so many dominant mustaches live in such close range to each other.
Nailed it
😂😂😂😂
Magestic aint it?
Such a rare sight were privileged
so many women would love to mount that mustache
I'm so glad Cal has his own series now - the meat eater episodes with him were always some of my favorites to watch.
This is killing me wheres all the eps!?!? Cal and steve are that good
There is few ep with Cal and steve
Oh they are great I would love for an opportunity to just tag along with Ol Cal. Lol or Steve for that matter id love to hunt with janis most of those guys really would just be a lifetime experience to get to pound boots with in the country at all.
I think Cal has got to be my favourite person representing hunters out there. Such a genuine fella.
Yes! Wouldn’t you love to go on a hunting trip with him? Could you imagine how much you would learn at camp having a few beers around the fire? Lol
Besides Steve, right?
Yas have Steve's shows btw? Only season 6 and 7 in australia of meat eater it sux!!
@@robjenno21 isn't there a way to access other countries Netflix platforms. You should research that a bit ..I've heard something about it
Cal is the sweetest person on this planet and needs to be protected at all costs.
"This sounds gross but do you want me to lick this or do you want to lick this?" There is another shirt for you guys
I like how afterwards he's like don't worry no one will ever know, I guess it made the cut
I need this shirt haha
I love that these kind of buddy situations occur all the time when u hunt with truly great people. Just a funny moment but has some great representation of the comradery that comes with hunting with good people. Just being in the woods or back country with great people. A great example of this is Remi Warren and Steve Rinella hunting tahr in New zealand and had to get the kill from across the glacier river. That whole situation was just great to watch them work together as two very passionate individuals about what they love. Its on here check it out.
I love listening and now watching Cal, full on wildlife conservation and hunting rolled in to one.
Thanks Cal
Lol! 😂🥱
This hunt took a serious toll on Ryan and taught all of us a lesson in shooting ethics.
WTH, all that and then a night arrow? No details.
@D.M. Not sure which episode but he explains exactly what happened in an episode of the Meateater podcast. But I thought there would be some better video of it also.

This is what the American people need this is what the world needs ! To breathe fresh air and to learn how to live off the land. I will be filming and posting as well during these time!
There are many great RUclips channels out there that would teach the general public how the world really works. Hunting channels, farming, forestry, etc. I personally have a channel focused on forestry.

Cal, I really appreciate what you and Meat Eater did here. The Nature Conservancy is doing really good work. We’re working with them to restore forests that are overgrown that need thinned back to natural levels. I really loved your take: Private, public access, profit, and preservation. It’s nuanced, but we can have it all if we do things intelligently with a balanced approach. We’re doing wonderful things similar to this in Eastern Washington. Thanks guys!
That constant in elk hunting...shoot, excitement followed by self doubt, second guessing, churning stomach, tracking tracking tracking then, hopefully the ultimate success at the end of the trail
I love the sound of elk, I live in western Kentucky so there's no elk here, but the several times I've been to eastern Kentucky where there's a decent population, I get chills every time they bugle
I was a golf course superintendent in eastern KY...walked my ass off looking for elk sheds...never found any big ones...those mountains are serious my friend!
These eps are far to short, they’re great to watch!
With the cinematography on offer and the opportunity for thorough explanation they could easily be 2-3 times longer
TNC is one of the greatest conservation organizations in the world. Congrats on the bull.
Got to work here for part of a summer while I was with TNC. Truly a special place! This prairie's health is dependent on larger grazers and it can be done with smart cattle ranching or wild ungulate management - TNC was doing both while I was there. A good book about the Zumwalt ecology puzzle, "Prairie Keepers". The area is also changing as corporate operations are buying up nearby family farms and grazing too hard. There are still great farms that you can support by buying their beef direct like 6 Ranch. I've been trying to get a tag for the Zumwalt for years now, one of these days...
Kill more elk stop being ignorant..shoot what you need to shoot Stop trying to play God they are food.
It would be awesome to hear Chad on an episode of the meateater podcast. I'd be super interested to learn more in detail about his background and his job. I'm currently a double major in Forestry: Restoration and Conservation, and Wildlife and Fisheries Science. That's the dream job for sure. Love the content!
Thanks to you Cal I picked up a recurve and started hunting with trad gear. You boys always prove and actually show the work that it takes, as well as the reward.
Zumwalt is an incredible area. Taken 4 cow elk out of there and have seen many monster bulls out there. The amount of elk out there is like nothing you have ever seen. Awesome film guys!
cal I greatly admire your patience man. I have only been bow hunting elk in idaho for 6 years but i feel like the first 5 were just me rushing in to situations with no patience and blowing out areas. you have a really good instinct on when u should let off on the trigger. im only now beginning to realize that sometimes passing on a slim chance will net you a strong chance further into a hunt. love what you do brother its educating as hell
I am from Northeast Oregon and I thank you showing a very special place. What a crazy ending to a hunt. Congratulations on a safe recovery.
This series could not have come at a better time for me. Seriously, thank you for giving me something to watch and feel good about! Keep it up! Please!!
I’m probably hyper sensitive to this being an Oregonian (not a Portlander) but it just hurts to see people gawk over such beautiful land without mentioning the state. It most definitely wasn’t on purpose but still sucks. Great show that every American should watch and learn from!
That was amazing. Down basically a cliff to retrieve your kill, IN THE DARK, is both crazy and commendable. Kudos to you sir.
So far iv watched 2 shows and have not heard the word “ topography “ once 😂👍🏻
What a dream hunt! Respect for mentioning the original care takers of the land. Some great shots of some wicked bulls!!
Zumwalt is awesome my best favorite reason to live in oregon the amount of wildlife there is awesome
The stache is a natural! He needs his own show!! Bravo!
8:10 that's funny. I went on my first deer hunt 3 years ago with a very good friend (who at the time was someone I barely knew, he knew I was going hunting alone, and asked if I wanted company), anyways trying to get my mulie out of a coulee I fell backwards onto a prickly pear cactus and later he ended up having to pull the spines out of my right arse cheek, "Let's not tell anyone about that" he says. We laugh our heads off about it now. So Cal... I know that feeling.
Fantastic episode with a really great message. Cal is awesome and it is great to see him have his own show. The behind the scenes stache off must have been a thing to behold.
Thanks Meateater for the great new content!
I am speechless. It is unbelievable to find ethical hunting, education, and entertainment wrapped up in a bundle this good ever thank you
I find the episodes with Cal, to be th most enjoyable to watch.
Something about his demenour that makes it better.
Thanks
Thanks for all the Cal' content, love it!!
Opening line, “there’s bulls everywhere. This could be a version of hell.”
I literally laughed out loud at that 😂
Currently rewatching seasons 5-8 on Netflix while watching these new episodes
Awesome episode showing the collaboration of conservation, public use and agricultural use. Truly amazing thank you!
I think this taught me something about the relationship between the game and the hunter. The emotion you showed for that animal will resonate with me. Don’t beat yourself up though we are only another animal/ specie of predator.
So rocking a moustache is the secret to be elk successful I’m in!!!!
I now have my grandfathers traditional bow hunting gear, and look forward to harvesting my first trad harvest! I enjoyed the move from gun to bow, so I know the switch will be thrilling.
"You gonna lick this, or do you want me to?"
Me to my wife, last night.
Great video! Just watched this with my son who says this was one of his favorite Meateater videos yet. That country is absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for sharing this.
wasnt sure where this was but within first seeing those rolling tan hills, i recognized it as home. only about 100 miles from me. Beautiful country.
What kind of person watches this and then give a thumbs down ? Great to see olecal doing some more content.
People that use the proper equipment and make sure they make the right shot.
denbronco44 I am sure you have never made a so so shot on an animal, if you haven’t you haven’t hunted much or are a liar! Which one is it?
If you dont like what he dose why waste your time watching.

Bow hunting elk in open country? That is NOT an easy proposition.
Kudos to the folks at that conservancy for creating a win/win/win proposition.
Fugg'n Kal looks better than I imagined after listening to his podcast. It's a great podcast and you should give it a listen. Kal's Week in Review.
Oregon is a beautiful place I'm proud to call home. The Lostine Wilderness is another area near here that I can never get enough of.
Eagle Cap wilderness? That's just south of the town of Lostine
Can’t imagine what a weekend of shed hunting would be like in there
You bet ! EXCEPT no one is allowed to shed hunt on TNC - they "talk the talk" BUT they "lock the lock" when it comes to access to hunt - there's a nickname for TNC bulls … "TNC bulls" because midway through EVERY season their racks are so broken up from the bunching that their racks are in sad state - TNC is able to purchase these properties because of "joint venture contributions" which is "supposed" to include hunting access which doesn't happen …. they auction off 4 or 5 bull tags every year and that is IT ….. look all you want (from outside the fences), take pictures …. if you want to hunt you had best have DEEEP POCKETS - TNC needs to be held accountable for all the PUBLIC FUNDS from ODFW and RMEF they receive and then do not reciprocate with "agreed" access
AND don't even get me started on the ODFW - they have an elk biologist for that area that knows more than any 10 "hunter/conservationists" will ever know but do you thing those in Salem listen to him ? not much …. and conducting counts with a HELICOPTER ?? "little joe" knows more about counting elk than anyone around but NOOO, Oregon "needs" to do their aerial counts with a HELICOPTER ….. the "ODFW" first count revealed "0" elk (???) this past weekend there were 1094 elk counted (FROM THE GROUND), and 692 of those were on ONE ranch ….. (no wonder the locals are stirred up)
George Price
I don’t doubt it... It’s a beautiful spectacle of an “untouched” ecosystem, but as with all over the west the idea of managing healthy herds has been thrown by the wayside so the fish and game departments can make a quick buck. It really is an unfortunate situation.
Thanks for sharing this story. I know there was more to the backstory of the how the bull laid to his final resting point. And I appreciate they way it summarize in this film to focus on conservation side of this story. Lets face it hunting is not always clean and either is nature its nice to see the human side of this. Hope for better luck in the next encounter and may your skills be sharper.
@7:52 my dude Cal works fast on the first date. I like that 😂
I need more meateater, just can't get enough.
As much as I love Steve ...its a nice change to have Cal narrate a show. Steve can lay the poetic crap on pretty thick.
Seriously love watching these guys. Reminds me of Marine corps days and hanging out with the best guys in the world.
Cals doppelganger episode. Cal you're awesome!
This prairie is almost as epic as those moustaches! Love it.
Awesome hunt. Yes, the shot was a little late but that is the nature of the beast.
Great Video. I love how you bring in some of the other aspects of hunting in regards to Ecology - plants species, etc. Keep up the videos!
Good Lord that's an Elk Hunters Paradise !!
Great show, Cal's one of the best at promoting conservation and land management 👏
Fantastic new series. Thank you for putting this out there for all of us to view!
I grew up hunting near there!!! beautiful country!!
”i think its a bit early in our relationship for me to lick it” hahahah
Shows like this make me far better understand a few things about myself. I need to spend more time getting into shape if I want to live through 10% of the amazing experiences Cal and Steve have. I need to move out of Minnestoa. And I need to start looking for more like minded friendships.
That takes real discipline & morals to walk away from that big SOB kick'n, strut'n & call'n because the sun is going down. Good on ya boys.
"i think it's too early in a relationship" loool "you don't even need to tell anybody about that" looooooooooooool guys you made me laugh so hard! hahaha
I dig the conservation and animal behavior and the landscape. good work.
Big Cal with the Struggle Stick!!
New Meat Eater content = stop whatever it is I'm doing!! Another great show!
Two dudes, two epic staches🤠, great to see great dudes like these guys leading a great example for all other conservationists!
Cal is honestly hilarious in every episode
I don't normally watch anything without Steve but Cal's a good guy
Real shit Brothers......... Feelin Ya Callahan . Stay true and keep it real..the fair chase continues
"Cal Prepares His Young Clone to Take Over the Role of Conservationist at Meat Eater - Ep. 1: Elk on the Prairie"

Sure helps to have your twin brother running the Zumwalt! congrats Cal!

Nice thing about the cliff is it makes a nice tenderizer.

Epic content, after getting back from a few pre-roar red deer hunts with some unsuccessful stalks (shooting olympic style recurve) This has just given me a bit more motivation and that fiery drive to get back out there ASAP to try again if this COVID lockdown allows it :D Cheers MeatEater and Ryan!!!
Fletchings are nice!
What an amazing experience! Hunting paradise all by yourself, that's heaven! I remember hearing this story on the podcast episode. Conservation practices doing great work!
do you remeber when this was, i would like to listen to it?
"Conservation"
The hunting Kool aid!
Great video and Info..Amazing nature and Elks..Ok..Keep going buddy and best regards from Canada.!👍🍷🍁🥂✌
Excellent episode with lots of information on wildlife conservancy, keep up the good work...dirtclod Az.
Great video. I did rewind to make sure I didn’t miss what state the preserve is in. Quick google search gave me Oregon. Please keep these coming Cal!
I've been shooting rabbits and small game with my bow for a while now, but just don't have the confidence to target big game ethically. Guess I just need to keep practising.
Beautiful country. Thanks for sharing, especially the honest feeling on the turn out of the hunt.
I think you mentioned it on one of the podcasts, but how much meat was salvageable based on the fact that sucker had the trauma of being hit by a couple of semi's ???
I think I remember him saying it was shocking how little damage there was to the meat
Travis Bowers anyone know what episode?
Also recall that podcast, but my memory opposite. IIRC, a meaningful portion of the meat was bruised and nasty / not edible or either not tasty. Something like 30-60%, but just going from memory, don't quote me.
Check out Cal’s Instagram he’s got photos and a little explanation of this bull!
@@jonastatu3607 I think it was on the Hunting collective. i could be wrong tho
This is what perfection looks like...
That looks like an H. Meland bow. A Pronghorn Fastflight. That’s a great bow.
Awesome episode
The mustaches are incredible
Gotta be honest, I was confused as to why the color of his mustache kept changing... Then I saw them next to each other and I realized that the level of manliness radiating from that much mustache majesty must have been palpable.
That was absolutely spectacular to have the privilege of watching
DUDE! Y'all are TWINS! Your doppelganger!
Awesome looking place!!! Nice to see this level of private land management.
Yes
Real nice of Cal to get that bug out of his brother's eye.
