- In episode two of MeatEater Hunts, MeatEater Producer Janis Putelis heads to Colorado to hunt a hard-to-draw unit with longtime friend and mentor Ethan Kohn. Both hunters burned years of accumulated points to draw these tags, and the pressure to find a mature bull weighs heavy. The search will bring them to vast burns and 10,000-foot alpine ridgelines in the high country. In the end, when you have a tag like this one, it's hard to settle. Check out this episode to see if the Latvian Eagle finds a bull that's worth the 13-year wait.

I love getting really really high and binge watching meat eater. Thank you for this lol
I hope you don't take a firearm when you get so high. lol
@@russellkeeling9712 I definitely do helps me aim 💪🤣
I always wondered if it was just me that did this
@@Preston8822 haha heck naw I do it daily 🤣
I'm smoking a joint while watching this 🤣
23:17 straight ahead as a backpacking guide I was able to give hundreds of teens their first encounters with elk. You play the wind and sit in the willows and the elk pass by at 10 to 40 yards. It was so rewarding to watch these kids eyes light up as they get to experience wildlife in nature for the first time.
In Lugano the mountains have all sort of cool animals.. the neatest thing i saw was these Mountain Goat just walking up toward me while on a rock.
I'm 80 this ear chasing Elk. I love it in the Mountains. If I get one it's a BONUS. Then it becomes work.
Sir, did you find your elk?
Hopefully you get yer Bonus
i'd also like to know if you got an elk this yr
Hope you got your elk sir
I have had the opportunity here in Canada to hunt many species of game. I have let 99% of them walk. I spend more time hunting than most. Most of my vacation time is dedicated towards it for 3 months of the year. I really enjoyed watching Janis pass on that bull. The next one that comes will be even sweeter. If we all practiced a bit of conservation and let the good ones survive another year, the following years will be even better. I took the biggest deer of my life 2 days ago after watching him for 4 years. Trust me, it's worth the wait. If it wasn't for quotas, hunters and hunting clubs, there would be no game at all. We have to be good stewards of the land or it will vanish. my 2 cents, all the best
Janis is an amazing host! This was extremely enjoyable to watch. I hope you guys keep sending him on these "assignments"!
Christopher Luis I agree! Easy going dude!
He’s lucky to be alive after the close call with the grizzly
Absolutely nothing gets your heart pumping faster then someone saying “OH SHIT” while hunting. And apparently while watching hunting as well 😂
My dogs know that short intake breath, when I make that noise my dogs heads start spinning like tops and they are asking "where, where?"
Janis had an expression on his face during that whole conversation at 8:00 that spoke thousands of words.
He looked so happy to be hunting and hanging out with his longtime buddy.
I absolutely love the peaceful soundtrack and pacing of the video. The feel of the video is a lot more like what I love about being in the woods; slowing down and really paying attention to your surroundings. Nature has all the drama and emotion I could ask for, you guys did a good job of getting that to show through
Need season 9 on Netflix asap please esp with this quarantine going on
You mean seasons 3-9? because that's how many seasons Netflix does not have.
shit nvm.
S9 starts 16 Sept 2020 on Netflix
I wish every season was on Netflix. I’ve been learning so much
Colorado is the coolest. Im fitting to live in Southern Colorado. Great fishing, hunting, hiking, and mary jane! Easy click when I see 'Colorado' in the title!
Janis is a stud. Love the turkey beard hanging off his mirror.
Caddis Fly ya I’m stoked him and cal are getting some of their own content like this.
@@Grooveset I agree.
For sure. It’s nice to see some new content with the other guys
Did you notice it had a spur and shotgun brass on it as well?
Leland Holton I did. Class act all the way.
The fact that this dude is his mentor explains why Jani is so dang cool.
28:06 you found my honey hole. From that spot south to the pass is what I think to be the best part of the unit during archery. Once I chased a herd bull from that spot to the pass. He outsmarted me every step of the way.
Hey Tyler, hoping to draw this tag next week. How hard did the area they were hunting in burn? Did it get up into the wilderness area? I'd like to ask you more specific questions based on my e-scouting but I don't want to hurt your hunting/guiding area by having it posted for everyone to see.
I’m blessed my kiddos, 8 year old son and 6 year old daughter, ask to vacation with me on a wind howling Montana hunting trip outside the Bob near our place in Wolf Creek rather than a sunny beach. You made the best choice with your vacation time.
That’s awesome man! That shows that hunting is much more important then filming a show! If you wouldn’t of gone after those elk because you couldn’t get it on film that wood of told me that filming was much more important to you then a hunt you have been dreaming about for 13 years and I wold of been upset with you!
Wood of told me?! Man, where the hell did you learn English? 🤣
23:16 in about 2007 on the peak to the left I walked past a calf elk bedded down in the brush at 5 yards. It’s still one of my favorite wildlife experiences.
The authenticity of this video is amazing
Born and raised in Routt County, cool to see you guys there.
I was wondering were in CO they were. I lived in Steamboat in the 90's
Thanks for a an Honest document of a REAL elk hunt!
I need a mentor like Janis or Ethan. These guys are so cool and collected.
Brock Berogan they “mentored” me when it comes to turkey hunting. This is my first year and I had success calling in a Jake on my first morning (no shots fired yet) that was 100% attributed to the Meateater podcast and tv show. The only research I’d done was to have the podcast playing on my commute to work. I’ll apply their moose tactics this fall if I get a tag. Give it a listen if you don’t already. Pure gold.
Some of the best in the biz!
I love the reverence for the wilderness areas. Thank you for your respect of our wild places.
Thanks for the upload guys. It's awesome seeing all the content you guys have been pumping out. Thank you for your hard work!
Thanks for the story team and yani.
When this whole covid thing blows over i'm hoping i manage to get back to the states like i planned this year and get out into the wild again and see some critters and especially some elk.
So glad you guys are putting out some more content during these times.
This is the most I’ve ever hear Janis talk
Thanks for the words about the value of Wilderness. They are special because of the extra rules. Wish more of the sporting community would learn that fact, and support even more Wilderness as these places are a big reason we have healthy herds where we do.
These videos are helping me stay sane while stuck at home.
Robert_MN I heard that!
Good for you brother, you honored yourself and the hunt by going after that awesome bull. Congrats guys.
I love that Janis' Stormy Kromer is so faded. You know he is not a pretender but that simple indicator.
Thanks for highliting the point it's not about the kill... Just the cherry on top. It's important to recognize why we hunt & who we choose to experience these moments with. Thank you for what you and your friends do. BTW nice bull!!
Janis the man. Need more of him and Cal.
Love it!! I live in Buena Vista and recognize some of that scenery! Been having a lot more moose in the area to. Grew up in the Arkansas Valley.
Do you work at BVCF?
@@sfctapia4529 no. My grandpa, aunt, and uncle did
Great stuff. We needed some new content from you guys! Thanks
Watching these video helps with the cabin fever 👍👍
I've wanted to elk hunt and mule deer hunt for many years, I'm running out of time because of my health. Don't know if I could walk the hills now, but back surgery in a week or so will hopefully give me an opportunity to get my first elk. Thank you Papa for loving me
Good Job Janis! I smiled when you said you went after that bull in wilderness without it being filmed. Glad it worked out!
Well done. I hope for more of these to come.
23:38 the elk move between this drainage and the one you were moving towards via the saddle to the north. When the Forrest service closed the road in the bottom right it really made the elk hunting better on this ridge.
Is this in the north end of the unit?
So glad these are on youtube !!
Really enjoyed this hunt. Thanks for posting it!
I love that they went into the wilderness area without the cameras to get that bull.
Yanni rock'n the Stormy Kromer! Not very many of us pull them off. Love it!
Vote for Jani, he’s even rockin a stormy kromer!
i just want to shout out the camera man for keeping up with them and hiking the whole thing.
Awesome hunt! Glad you both were able to fill your tags.
Jani's such a respectable man. Keeps the show honest and in a positive light. Love it.
Awesome video release. Cannot wait to get out for some preseason scouting.
Congrats all around! Great elk hunt, I wish we could all be so blessed!
Really fantastic hunt/story. just loved it, thank you !!
Spectacular episode. I just recently started watching you guys. What a breath of fresh air. Hunting. Not a bunch of GI Joe nonsense. This is what I got into hunting for back in the early 60's as a kid. The ethos represented here is what it ought to be all about. I especially like all the frustrations and not so successful choices shown. Lots to be learned if one pays attention. I'm hooked. I would enjoy knowing the rounds being shot but understand there might be some ethical matters involved. All in all, top shelf stuff.
This was really, really good. Thanks guys!
Nice work. Cool to see Jani leave the cameras to fill his tag.
Just listened to the podcast yesterday of when janis was out for this hunt and now yall upload. Pleasant coincidence id say. Awesome hunt and awesome podcast episode.
Victor Hopper same same!
Things I have never said. "I'm just gonna let him walk."
You would make a terrible musky fisherman!
Literally pissing me off sooooo much. But I mean that's real hunting, balancing don't pass on an elk to hunt elk, with getting a good elk.
Steven Kramer does he get to keep his points? If not then it was a waste.
I'm just saying that I'm not that good of a hunter. But I try.
@@stevenkramer587 the secret to elk hunting is literally be in shape and put on lots of miles. They won't come to you. All my big bull Elk kills have been because I was doing a lot of moving. Start running now, and do hills.
Ethan, man... That is the elk hunting Yoda right there. :- }
Great episode Janis. Congrats on 2 great bulls.
Great hunt I really enjoy watching Janis get out amongst it. Was a shame we didn't get to see him pull the trigger but I'm glad he got the bull he was looking for.
Love Colorado mountains and spent plenty of time in that area.
My brother and I had the opportunity to be guided by Ethan. An unbelievable hunter. We learned a lot from him.
Ethan is so cool and laid back.
Thanks, I enjoyed it. Mahalo and Aloha from the Big Isle "🤙"
Great bulls guys . Thanks for sharing.
Awesome video! I was going to put in for that unit with my 9 resident points but chose GMU 61 instead! Looks like an awesome hunt and thanks for sharing.
Colorado4x4 Dude 61 is gonna be awesome!
What unit is this? I’m at 8 points thinking of saving for 61 also.
Awesome man!!! It was getting toward the end and I figured well if he doesn't have it by now, then he's not getting one. What a great ending!
Can't wait for Meateater season 9
Well done! Makes me wish I had a mentor like Janis has.
The fact he admitted to “trophy hunting” was refreshing. Not enough guys cop to that.
Every hunter I know is trophy hunting until the last day of the season.
I have yet to shoot a deer with antlers. I’m too impatient.
Agreed. All harvests take work and sacrifice, thus all qualify as trophies. But there's nothing abhorrent or immoral about wanting to harvest a mature specimen with large antlers. No one builds points for a decade with the intent to tag out on a spike.
Michael Orton the fact is these guys live off the animals they shot so if they want to shot a large one for meat and a nice trophy so what. Actually it’s probably better since that mature bull has already spread his genes and the smaller ones most likely haven’t.
I never realised that in the US people worried/noted/commented on "Trophy hunting". Surely since you have to take stags/bucks/bulls for your tag system it is accepted by default, isn't it? In NZ we have to management numbers. I hunt to eat, so target eating animals, ideally sub 2 year old animals (the same age meat that city folk get from a supermarket), ideally hinds but spikers are fair game to me also. This gives the stags/bulls/bucks more to eat, conserves/manages forests, and allow better heads for those into that sort of thing.
Can you comment a bit more on if there is a stigma or bias against/for targeting large heads please, I'm curious.
Way to go Janis! Good job on the video.
Love this content. Send more please.
Great elk hunting vid!! You guys are the best!! Thank you!
Yo shout out to the camera crew. They are putting in just as much work as the hunters are. Respect.
Phenomenal episode! Hope to see more Latvian Eagle episodes in the future 🇱🇻 🦅
Great video. What an awesome hunt. MeatEater puts out some seriously incredible content
I've always thought it was called still hunting because you normally do it mid day when the animals are in the timber and a lot of people go back to camp, but you are still out hunting. Still hunting. It probably came from way back when a hunter got back to camp and his buddy was already there and asks "Where's Jimmy" and the hunter replied "He's still hunting". Now that's not a fact, but its what I came up with so it makes sense to me.
I think your reason is as sound our sounder than any other I've heard! Cheers and happy hunting!
Yep I thought it meant that too!
I’ll buy it!
I love this!! Hahaha
Great hunt, film and bulls.
Beautiful bull. Congratulations on your success!
Great hunt. Really liking this new series.
Amazing footage!
Love it fellas! Top notch shoot.
Lots of fun watching that!
Great job Janis. Im all stacked up with points for Colorado also and not sure where Im going to drop in.
I cant wait to get established in Colorado to switch from whitetails to elk. I'm sitting in Routt county right now
We need more!
Awesome. Beautiful country and animals.
Very nice Janis! Looked like a great hunt.
Colorado set a record for big game applications this year. 40,000 more applications then ever before. More hunters in the mountains then elk.
That will change once management by ballot box implements wolf reintroduction and the herd size is greatly reduced while hunters are forced to foot the bill.
So obvious you guys know what you're doing. Awesome elk!
Hunter North Central Colorado 2 years ago, archery season, only came across two spike bulls. Bad weather caused a hard hunt! But enjoyed my first time out west!
Great work Janis!
Loving the RUclips content.
Wow! Wish I was there just hiking and camping!
Highly recommend hiking up to Mt.Elbert which is in the area. I believe it is the tallest in colorado at around 14,300. Even if you don't make it to the peak, it is a gorgeous place to hike and camp off the side of the trail. You will have a good view of the Twin Lakes area as well, which if I remember correctly, is (one of) the head water for the colorado river.
Hunted archery there many years ago looking for a trophy, my only year to ever do so. I passed on eight different bulls at 20 yards, or less, standing, broadside, in the open. Did not regret passing on a single one. The last day I finally saw what I was looking for, but he only offered a "Texas heart shot". What an amazing year and by passing so many elk, I learned a ton about their behavior!
What unit is this?
So fun to watch! Thanks for the stellar production and story telling.
Love seeing those older generation tundras around.
Yanis: "oh shit! Oh shit, big herd!" Freakin done!😂😂😂😂
I have wonder about the 25 👎?? Do those guys not like elks a bugle’n? Beautiful country? The eagle? Maybe they got to “I’m gunna let him walk” and bailed 🤣😂. Great, great hunt of a lifetime fellas, so happy for, and jealous of you. Big ol 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
That was one beautiful bull at the end worth waiting for congratulations I'm a hunter to .Even the other bull was a character great job to the both of you .
This is an excellent video. I really enjoy y’all’s passion and hope to hunt with u guys one day.
