Pro Tip: NEVER USE THE DELETE KEY on the edit page. If you want to remove a clip, select it and hit the backspace key. Then, if you want to remove the gap as well, select the gap between clips and hit the backspace key again. I know this sounds like more work, but believe me, this will save you heart ache. The delete key does something somewhat unusual in Davinci Resolve; particularly if you are working in multiple layers. When you delete a clip off the timeline it also removes the gap without proper respect to the various layers of all the clips to the right. What that means is if you have nearly finished a project and then go back to remove 1 clip from the middle, using delete can screw up ever edit to the right of that on the timeline. If you insist on trying it, experiment carefully and be prepared to hit undo (Ctrl-Z) if you are not happy with the outcome. It may be that there is some special case that this IS what you wanted to do. But I found repeatedly that DELETE caused nothing but trouble. I have stopped using it entirely. Since I don't use the cut page at all, I am not sure how DELETE responds on that page. I am only saying this regarding the edit page.

Kevin's commitment to asking questions from a total beginner's perspective and Casey's patient, useful answers, along with their considering the needs and problems that various users might run into(like when using an older computer), make for such a helpful and also very calm and fun viewing experience.

I had shot some footage of a very short (3 or 4 car) passenger train and so I edited it to make it appear as if the train was 3 times longer. It was then that I realized how powerful editing actually is. It can change a story or make up a story that isn't even there.

I've seen tons of videos for various non-linear editors. I used Premiere Pro for over 20 years and gave up on Adobe when they went to that subscriber model. So it was with some joy I found DaVinci and while playing around with it, realized that despite some similarities with PP, there are lots of differences. So more joy when I found this turorial. It is absolutely perfect in every way. The questions asked by the "beginner" and the answers by the expert are just right on. I've taken 50+ courses in my life (in classrooms mostly) and I always had questions when something was glossed over. But not here. As I'm thinking of a question, it gets asked, then answered. The show 'n Tell is stunningly clear: big mouse indicator, nice slow zoom in to a high res display of the daVinci screen. I've seen some where they show just the lores screen with small regular mouse arrow that is impossible to follow and labels impossible to read. You guys have set the bar for proper method of doing a tutorial. I say this as a former instructor in Industrial Instrumentation and Controls, and working and teaching in the industry for 30 years. Good work. I subscribed!

I have been trying to learn DaVinci Resolve for weeks including your guest's 4 hour plus tutorial and have been overwhelmed with detail. This has been the most useful video by far because unlike many of the other tutorials he actually shows and explains which buttons, keys, whatever, activate whatever function you're trying to. Amazingly, so many other videos don't show those details and so they're essentially useless for a beginner who doesn't already know. Really excellent job of explaining the basics and including that stuff on zooming and especially how to get things back is a really good idea because the other day while trying to edit I got somehow the timelines so tall you couldn't see many other things and I spent over an hour trying to get things back and at one point thought I had broken Resolve and would simply have to delete it and redownload it. Your video is awesome and I wish I had seen it before wasting that hour getting more desperate all the time when I couldn't get it to resize no matter what I did. A real public service to post this--the best tutorial on this subject by far that I have seen. Thanks so much for the hard work to make this manageable because it's hard to know how much to include for beginners that's clear enough to understand but contains few enough details not overwhelm. You did this balancing really, really well. Casey is wonderful but I would tell rank beginners to start with your's and then move to his 4 hour one or others because finally I understand many basics that other videos addressed but didn't get the concepts over well enough for me to get it. Thanks again. Will be subscribing to your channel.

Initially I believed it'd take between 4 to 5 hrs. per every 1 hr. of raw video to completely edit and upload a video to RUclips (with added text, audio and video clean up as such). But as they say "..speed comes with experience..." and this 'HOW TO' is definitely the priceless tool needed to accomplish that. Now....I'm anticipating an hour for editing per hour of raw footage (plus uploading). Thanks for the well needed help fellas.😊

It's already been said but the two person format is great as well. Having one person asking questions from the perspective of a complete novice is handy and worth the extra effort.

If anyone is wondering why it is not possible to hover over the source at 12:44, it's because a newer update added Live Preview Mode. You can disable it in your Edit Tab by clicking the 3 dots between the timer and 30%.
This will allow you to use your mouse to hover again.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've decided to do video editing to help my wife publish content about the crafts she makes, and this tutorial nailed what I needed to learn.
Da Vinci Resolve is ALREADY highly recommended by two channels I follow on youtube, Stephen Georg (stephenplays, stephenvlog) and Corridor Digital (Corridor and Corridor Crew), and I found YOUR channel when I was learning with the basic editor on Windows 11.
Seeing this tutorial was really, really helpful, it was very nice and concise about all the necessary details for beginners, while providing enough leeway to get creative. I love the back and forth, humor, and the Q&As that were brought up.
    Again, THANK YOU.

While exporting, I decided to delete footage to export the intro of my video separate from the body and ending of the video. I thought, no big deal, I'll just use UNDO command to get my clips back after I export. However, instead of UNDO command, I needed to quit the program which then DaVinci Resolve autosaved. When I reopened the timeline, all I had left was the intro and COULD NOT UNDO my actions from earlier. Please help!

Thank you for this video! I'm really motivated to use DaVinci for my next video. BUT, there is one thing that is holding me back 😅I don't know where to adjust my workspace to make it look like yours. I am also missing things like the slider to adjust the timeline... I've tried zooming in and out with Shift + scroll wheel but that doesn't work either 🙄 The most annoying part is that I can see that there is more on the right side of my screen (don't know how to describe it better) that I can't access. HELP😃I know there is most likely a very quick way to fix this and it took me a bit of courage to type this text. But I am honestly have no clue and I am hoping to help others who have the same issue. TIA ♥
