Thank you so much!! 😄 yes, it was absolutely safe, and we had no problems at all. As tourists, we were treated very nicely everywhere and the people are very friendly and nice! I read somewhere that IF the protests happen, it might be limited to Colombo, and not elsewhere. But please read on this before you travel :) hope this helps!
