Wow, can't believe how much its changed. My wife and I stumbled across Hiriketiya 10 years ago and I've been back a few times with my son on surfing trips. I don't want to deny locals the chance to cash in on foreign tourists money but personally its sad to see the development, often surfed the left hand point break with only 3 or 4 others in the water, great memories. Haven't been back to Lanka since covid, is this development happening all along the coast. Luv to the locals from Australia.

Hey Micheal! Development is happening at a marginal rate throughout the coastline depending on how popular each location is but what’s happening in Hiri is that there are a lot of illegal developments happening on the bay mostly by people who are not even locals from hiri but are from nearby beach towns. Unfortunately its been difficult to help them understand that they are doing more harm than good by occupying this space on the beach which is public property. Hoping there will be some solution given to the locals and legitimate businesses in the area soon.

Yes another ruined place or on it's way to getting ruined. As you have very correctly said, Hiriketiya was a hidden gem until its been exposed to the profit makers. The same sad thing happened some years ago to the once beautiful Polhena beach in Matara. Today Polhena is just a commercial wasteland with crowds coming from many parts of the country to bath here. The sad thing thing is, the majority of those patronizing this place do not come to appreciate the beauty and take in whats in offer from the ocean, instead its just a place to drink their liquor, indulge in drugs and engage in other activities that's purely detrimental to this area. Pollution is a direct consequence as a result of these huge crowds. And no more is it pristine as it was some years ago. The unregulated development of the area in the form of the construction of various cheap guest houses hasn't helped at all. And has made this beautiful place almost a squalor. I won't be in the least surprised if Hiriketiya is facing the same fate as Polhena. Thank you for highlighting the 'otherside' of the story when it comes to discovering paradise. We really need to manage what Sri Lanka has to offer in form of its natural beauty. At the moment sadly nothing is been done about it.

Yes we did notice that and was worried about that too. which was why we were intrigued by the high price point of services in Hiriketiya and how as a result it would only attract a certain segment of tourist to visit its shores.
No doubt there will be certain issues of overcrowding in times to come. but what was interesting for us to see was how because they are a small cove, a majority of the vendors are all well connected and have a body of its own to oversee matters with regards to the maintainance of the cove.
Not the perfect sollution as government should also play apart in looking after these resources, yet it will be a good case study to examine over the coming years to see what may happen.

Hirikatiya is my village. When I was child this beach was very empty. Near 5.00 PM even you can't find a dog those days. Only fishermen with their boats. But now it's so heavy and crowd. But still its most beautiful beach in SL.

I agree, why must people incessantly monetize a beautifully natural environment into a tourist trap menagerie of over crowded chaos. The videos I saw previously of hiriketeya so quietly peaceful and mystically inviting seemed like paradise contrasted to what it looks like now. But I know there's pros n cons to both scenarios. Sorry Shanelle. By advertising Hiriketiya n mor n more tourist as well as locals go there, it is going to end up so commercialised n nothing special. As mentioned by another commentator, it will be like Polhena. The pristine look of a place is lost by it getting all crowded. Just my opinion. From the UK.

agreed that Hiriketiya will get more popular in time. Our hope is that by documenting it now and creating awareness on the need for sustainable growth, Both vendors and tourists will develop the area with this in mind.
Based on what we saw. Not many locals would really be able to stay dine and enjoy the paid experiences which they have on offer due to the high demand already there.
In time this will act as a deterrent cause just a few minutes away are beaches which are significantly less crowded and cheaper to stay near.
Hence this small cove will be a very interesting case study to follow. From which we can learn how to better manage the inflow of tourism we will have over the next few years to all parts of the island.
It is no doubt a tricky subject. But we must be proactive rather than reactive.
