- Hi everyone. This is a crochet tutorial for a hexagon cardigan made with the granny stitch.
The tutorial is in US TERMS

Things you need to know about this pattern...
1. This pattern is made to measure. (A tape measure is essential. All of the measurements are provided below, you just need to measure your garment as you progress through the pattern).
2. As it is made to measure you can use any weight yarn and any size hook.
3. Due to the way in which the pattern is constructed, the larger the size, the wider the sleeves and the longer the length. The sleeves can get very wide and there is an option to cuff them or leave them wide and flowing.
4. Once it has been assembled, you can either leave it the length it is at or there is another option to add extra length.
Here are some yarn estimates based on the longer length version in DK yarn...
XS - 920m/1010yd S - 1060m/1160yd M - 1200m/1320yd L - 1360m/1500yd
XL - 1500m/1640yd 2XL - 1630m/1780yd 3XL - 1920m/2100yd 4XL - 2160m/2360yd
5XL - 2510m/2750yd
SIZING... Written as XS (S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL)
As you progress through your pattern you will need these measurements...
CHEST (cm) - 71-76 (81-86, 91-96, 101-106, 111-117, 122-127, 132-137, 142-147, 152-157)
28:45 - WIDTH OF HALF A HEXAGON (cm) - 18 (20.5, 23, 25.5, 28, 29, 33, 35, 38)
41:52 - BACK INFILL ROWS (cm) - for each side - 4.5 (4.5, 5, 5, 5.5, 5.5, 6, 6.5, 6.5)
1:07:33 - SLEEVE LENGTH - NO CUFF - (cm) - underarm to wrist - 42 (43, 43.5, 44.5, 45, 45.5, 45.5, 47, 47)
SLEEVE LENGTH - WITH CUFF - (cm) - 37 (38, 38.5, 39.5, 40, 40.5, 40.5, 42, 42)
1:21:20 - CUFF - 5cm for all sizes or you can make it longer if you wish.
1:39:54 - Neckline for cropped only.
1:52:26 - ADDED LENGTH TO HIP (cm) - 3xl to 5xl are long enough, but if you want extra length then that is absolutely fine, I haven't provided a measurement for these 3 sizes. - 21 (17, 12.5, 4, 4, 2.5)

I just wanted to say thank you for having plus-size measurements available. We get left out of wearables sometimes, and it really stinks! Thank you so much
You are so welcome ❤️
When that happens, leave a comment asking the designer for the “ multiple”. This will give you the # that you have to increase or decrease the original chains to make in your size. For example, a size small is a multiple of 40 ( just using a random #, not actual multiple) with a multiple of 4- 3 for the stitch and 1 for the space between (lik3 the granny stitch above). Then you know to make a large you take 40 and add 4 twice=48. Usually there is a +1 or 2, etc. after the multiple meaning you chain an additional 1or 2 chains at the end. You can also ask how many rounds it is. Either way, let the designer know you are interested in the plus sizes. Some of them feel it might be a lot of work to determine the pattern for all sizes. If they know you’re interested, they are more l8kely to do it.
Where do I find the written pattern?

Just wanted to thank you for this. My mum is a 60 something gigaboomer who has always said she doesn't see the point in RUclips. This blew up on Facebook in the crochet groups were in and she's now super happy about RUclips lol
Wow! That's amazing, I have converted your mum! RUclips is great, that's actually how I learned to crochet! By following videos on basic stitches I picked it up and haven't stopped since!
I have now made 3 of these (easily) because of your clear and easy to follow video, I just wanted to thank you for showing this (and also the printed measurements).......Thanks again
You are very welcome! 😊
You have inspired me to make my own version of this beautiful cardi. I finished it last week and I am Sooooo proud of it thanks to your wonderful step by step guide. Thank you 😘
This is so amazing to hear! Thank you for taking the time to write to me. I really appreciate it 🥰😍
Hi! Just wanted to ask how much yarn you used. I always order too much or not enough 😂

Hi there, as a neurodivergent folk I usually watch videos with subs and no sound, but I broadcasted this video on my TV and omg I love your voice bad accent best discovery ever ❤️ I also absolutely loved the tutorial for it's my next project, keep going you're awesome 🎉
This is amazing! Thank you so much!! I used to get tested terribly for my accent so to hear that is really lovely! Thank you for taking the time to comment 🥰
Ive managed to complete this 5xl in 4 weeks ive only just learned how to crochet and your tutorial was amazing to follow thank you so much x
Thats fantastic well done!!! ❤️🙂

Did you ever find out how many skeins of yarn that is needed@@candacekillian6530 ? I would also love to know.
Any chance you could do one with a hood please 🙏🏼

Thank you so much! I was scared to start a garment piece but your video has been amazing ❤️ I'm almost finished something I've admired for such a long time x
This is amazing! Thank you so much for your generosity ❤️
Making this my next project! Ive wanted to try a peacock themed project for ages and this could be perfect! Various Blues and greens, with some gold and white thrown in.
I absolutely love peacock colours!!! 😍❤️
I plan to do the same color scheme!!
This worked up so quickly. Everyone I know is getting hexagon cardi for their birthday. Thanks for the amazing tutorial!
Yay! I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it! They are fun to make! ❤️
I'd found this cardi pattern on Pinterest and sent it to my friend telling her I hoped to make one like it. She fell in love with the image and wants one as well. Them I come across the video. This had made my day. I cant wait to start this. Thank you for making such a beautiful cardi and sharing it with everyone so they to can make one. 💗
You're very welcome!! Im glad that are enjoying it 😊 ❤️
I’ve purchased your written pattern for the cardigan and it’s so well written. I’m really loving the video too for additional support 😁 I’m a visual learner so it really helps me to see videos as well as the written pattern. I’m starting my very first hexi cardi in chunky yarn and it definitely won’t be my last of these! Thank you 😁
Ahh amazing!! Thank you for your lovely comment ❤️
Me too ❤
By far the best tutorial I've watched. I love how you explain everything. Great to have it in real time. You are a great teacher. Can't wait to try this one. Thank you so very much.❤️
Thank you so much for this amazing feedback 😍🙂
Currently working on my second one of these!
This tutorial is amazing - I only started to crochet in January, this was the first wearable item I made that wasn't a beanie and it felt so easy having this as a guide. The measurements and timestamps in the info are also so so helpful for the making of my second one as I didn't need to watch the full video (even though I did at some points anyway because your voice is so lovely to listen to 😊)
Thank you!! ❤
Aww thats amazing! Thank you so much. They are quite fun to make! I have no idea how many I own I now 🙈😆
Thank you so much for your Hexagon Cardigan tutorial. I have made my first ever hexagon wearable! I crocheted along with you every stitch of the way. So easy and fun! I'm going to make several more of these in different colors for myself! Thanks again!!
Ah that's amazing! I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it! 🥰
Do you have a video for the sweater you’re wearing?
I haven’t finished my cardigan yet but I just need to say this is one of the best crochet videos I’ve watched. I initially found it because I was trying to piece together some hexagons and squares I made (I’m not a pattern-reader) and this video was SO helpful! Especially with the sizes listed in the caption
Ah amazing! I'm so pleased that you like it! 😍
I just found your channel and subscribed. I love your tutorial for the hexagon cardigan. I'm going to start mine today💖
Thank you so much!! I cant wait to add more content. I'm just making my little girl a cardigan and then record a new tutorial!
I finished my sweater today with a matching scarf - you made this experience so simple and easy - measurement listed matched real sizing. Grateful for your talent and sharing!
This is amazing to hear! Thank you so much for taking the time to write to me 🥰
I really appreciated seeing little bits of other cardigans you’ve done popping in at the sleeves. :)
Ooh yes! Everyday is a crochet fashion show in my house 😆
This is so wonderful! It’s on my list to make! You’re an excellent teacher! Thanks for this fantastic tutorial. ❤️💜💗
Thank you so much! 💓
Hi where can I find different messurement please
Hi its in the written description of the video. If you are using your phone then click the title of the video and it should bring it up 👍🏻🙂
I started this a couple of days ago. It comes together unbelievably quickly!! Such a joy to make. The only problem is that I'm already coming up with colour schemes for the next one, I don't think I'll ever want to make cardigans any other way ever again. Thank you ❤❤
Ha ha yes I know that feeling. I own way too many of these 🙈
Thankyou for such a comprehensive tutorial, I can’t wait to make my very first one.
You are very welcome!
I tried to watch so many tutorials on how to do this but this is the best video and I actually got the hang of it. Thank you so much!!! Easy gifts for Christmas and birthdays
Oh amazing! I am do pleased that you have enjoyed it 😀
is there a rough guidance on what sizes to make based on dress sizes?
I would probably google it and match the chest measurement sizes up to the dress sizes 👍🏻😊
This is one of the best tutorials for hexi cardigans. Thank you for taking the time to share this with me. You are the best.

Hello, I am new here, you were on my feed this morning, I really LOVE your Cardigan, it looks amazing!

I'm on to my second in 3 weeks. It sure is a very addictive pattern!
Thats amazing! Yes I really love making ones out of scrap yarn ❤️
Thank you so much! I'm making one for my mom, and the size inclusive pattern is a live saviour. Love the video. It's one of the easiest to follow that I've seen in a long time ❤❤❤
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it 😊
Thanks for sharing this video. At the moment I’m binge watching RUclips videos as I’m crocheting my current project. This is next on my list, shunted up after seeing someone wearing one of these made in Sirdar Merry Go Round Rainbow and black it was beautiful (two rounds in each with black ribbing and cuff) . I saw her in the yarn isle of a shop and we got chatting, as you do, my husband sighed as said "I’m going to sit in the car" 😇😂
I like the idea of doing two together when changing colours, I hadn’t thought about that.
When I join at the end I don’t do two chain and a slip stitch I just do a half treble (British), turn, then a stack instead of three chain, that’s a double topped with a chain. Not making three chain makes it harder to see where the round starts and ends.
Thank you once again for sharing your video and keeping me company as I finish this project. 👍
P.S. How many have you made? As, so far I’ve seen at least three different cuffs and sleeves. All looking lovely I might add.
@@beccabbea2511 aww thank you! I'm not actually sure how many I've made, maybe 8 to 10 for a random guess 😆😆😆
Finishing my first crocheted garment thanks to you! I will tag you tomorrow when I am done with the last rounds. So happy and pleased with this experience made possible because of your awesome tutorial! Like you: I love all the colors. I am big and tall guy so I made a 4XL and it’s massive!! Many hugs from Provence

I love this tutorial! It’s first, relaxing to listen to, and second, so informative, and third, YES these are so addicting to make!!!

well I finished my Cardigan only took me like 5 days on and off and I am over the moon , I changed the edging my husban was like , that looks awesome , I am so so stoked , I have never made anything for myself , this is the 1st ever item of clothing I have ever made myself , except for the slippers i have made.. man I wish I could show you..

Could someone tell me how many balls of wool needed for different sizes please
Hi all of this information is in the written description of the video. If you are on your phone then you need to click the title of the video and then click on more and it should bring up all of the description which has yarn estimates and all the measurements 🙂

@@lynngelder3742 thank you!!
I love this tutorial, so now I'll have to make one of course ( as if I haven't got enough projects going at the moment!) Will make a start today the more things I have to make the better I never get bored. 😄
Ha ha amazing! Thank you 😊
Thank you! With this excellent tutorial you've inspired me to try the hexa cardi although I find them a little daunting. For my first try could I use a dk variegated yarn so I wouldn't have to change color?
Yes you could but bare in mind that your hexagon panels probably won't match up when you seam them together. I often use varigated alongside a solid colour, maybe do 4 or 5 rounds of varigated, then 1 round with a solid and then it helps it have a bit more unity when you join the panels together ❤️
This was so amazing to watch and the cardigan is absolutely beautiful. No wonder you can rip one of these beauties up in next to no time…you are just so fast 😮😅 Thank you for taking the time to show us how it’s done. The varying sizes is much appreciated 💕
Thank you so much! Oh these take me ages to make 🤣 the quickest one was my Christmas version. I made that in 4 days, but totally neglected my entire family 🙈😆
@amandaakers4960 Love the video. Do you have a video for the sweater or cardigan that you are wearing on this video? I am in love with the colors.
If it is the one I'm thinking of with the orange and blues then unfortunately not. I freestyled it when I was having a break from designing regular patterns 🙈😆
Thank you! 😍😍😍 This is a fantastic tutorial! Starting mine today!
Thats amazing to hear. Thank you so much!!
Hello! I love this pattern and excitedly started making one, however I realized my chest measurement is directly between two sizes.. you mention there is positive ease on this project, would you recommend sizing up or sizing down? (I measure at 141cm so I’m between the 3x & 4x) thank you for sharing this tutorial and pattern!
I would probably size up! Better to be a little looser than tighter but that's my own personal preference 😄❤️
This was great! Wish I had seen it a year ago, but this is the perfect time to start Christmas gifts ❤😊
Aww thank you so much 💓
These cardi r soooo popular, started 1 about a yr ago and ran out of the yarn i was using half way thro 2nd Granny hex and couldn't get hold of anymore so i frogged it. Ive even seen a celeb wearing 1 the other day on a quiz show. Gonna have to do 1 again. Ive got rainbow fuzzy yarn, but im torn between this but oversized, the jumper and the cropped cardi 😂
They are good fun and a great stashbuster!
Absolutely loving this - for me personally this has by far been the clearest tutorial - Thank you so much - I now have a hexy cardi on the go an I found myself agreeing with u an then responding to u 😂 I’m using just the one colour as it’s a gift an her fave colour but I cannot wait to come back an do more following your guide x you’re amazing thank you x
Ahh thank you so much! I'm so pleased that you are enjoying it! ❤️
Hi Kelly, I've just started this lovely colourful cardi. I'm doing it with only "one tail to sew"!. I picked up the technique from madebyanita (Made by Anita video tutorial). It's called Granny Squares With Only One Tail To Sew". I've tested it with your hexi and with a tiny adaption of the starting corner, and sticking to your 2R contrasting colours then 1R main colour, works just as well!! And once on the off, only ONE tail to sew in at the end.
It'll be back to sewing in ends once out of the hexi, but, hey....😊 best wishes, Sally
Ooh yes! That will be so much easier!! 🥰❤️
Maravilloso trabajo 👏...seria genial si lo tradujeran al español 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Yes I need to sort out subtitles! Thank you for reminding me! 🥰😍
Thanks for this, I’ll definitely be making one following your tutorial. I notice you’re using a wool jeanie type holder for your yarn, do you have one per colour or do you keep taking the colour off to put next colour on?? Also, I’ve seen wooden style ones where as the wool jeanie is plastic, is one better than the other? X
I can't speak for the wooden one as I've never used it but the plastic one is fantastic. I just have one of them 🥰
Thanks to your clear and detailed instructions it's been so easy for me to follow along and crochet my own hex cardigan!
Unlike some other cases (with other people's patterns and tutorials) where I haven't been sure whether I was doing it correctly, here I have no doubt, everything is explained so clearly I'm always sure of what I'm doing. Thanks so much for this tutorial.
Thats amazing to hear! Thank you so much!
Love this tutorial!! 1 question so in the corners its 3 double crochet chain 2 3 double crochet and then you go straight to the next gap with 3 double crochet then straight to the next gap 3 double crochet. Why don't you have a chain 1 in the middle? Also why do you turn your work? Is it okay to just continue?
You can add a Ch if you wish but it will make the cardigan more "holey" I also turn after each round to keep the seam in the centre of a corner and to stop the stitches leaning to one side 😊
For the squeaky hook, run it through your hair 😂😂 it gets rid of it 🎉
I'll have to remember that!
Bar of soap also works don’t rinse it off also makes ur creation smell good
I finally started making my cardigan, and i bought the pattern to help me along. When i fold my piece in half, it doesn't make a nice angle like yours does. Could i have done something wrong, or is it because it's still small? I want to keep going because i feel like It'll start to take shape once it's bigger, but also, if im doing something wrong, i want to catch it now. I've done about 7 rows. Should it be taking shape by now, or should i keep going?
Yes 7 rows isn't too many, I would personally keep going and make sure you have 3dc ch2 3dc in each corner. ❤️
Thank you! I've done much more since I posted this and it already looks better. I'm so excited to see how this turns out. Ive had it book marked for ages!
Thank you so very much for this beautiful pattern. Your instructions are so easy to follow. Just finished my first cardigan, sorting yarn for second.
Ahh amazing! I'm glad that you enjoyed it and are going back for round 2! ❤️😍

Thank you for detailed video. I am working my first one and really wanted to add cuffs. I think it makes it more finished and not quite as boxy. I thought that part would be more difficult but it looks quite easy. Your cardigan is very pretty. I'm doing mine in fall colors .
Thank you so much. I bet it looks amazing ❤️
Thank you for the video.
The blue cardigan your wearing at the end,
Would that be a ribbed style on the cuff?
Like how a hat is made?

Hi yes it is ❤️
Great tutorial, love seeing the sleeves of your crochet garments too. So many ideas and I’m using your idea and making my 2 hexis at the same time.
Thank you. Yes I also make mine at the same time if I'm changing colour, I don't know why but it always feels quicker!
Ik ben m ook aan t maken, gaat super mooi worden.
@@gerryteeuwen3810 thank you 😊
do we have to keep turning the project or can we just keep continuing the same side. In the video you said it's what you prefer, but I don't have that much room to keep turning the work. Thank you
The reasons I turn is to keep the seam on the centre corner and to stop the stitches from leaning to one side but if you prefer not to then it's completely up to you! 👍🏼😊
Great tutorial!!!! Thankyou, I started one straight away and now starting another 2 for my daughters, so much fun to make.....🥰😁🌸🌼
Oh wow amazing! Thank you so much!
I have made about 7 so far but I want to make the next one with narrower sleeves. Would I decrease slightly, on every 2nd row, in the centre of the row, or do you suggest another way?
My 80 year old brain is starting to get slow, I am afraid!
So I have a hack for this which I use in the solid hexi Cardi tutorial for how to get narrow sleeves I will link it here for you. It would be the same process for this Cardi too! It's a bit hard to explain just in writing ..... 🥰

Hi, cant workout how to find measurements.
Hi if you are using your phone, there is a symbol to the right, under the video which looks like an upside down v. If you click on that it will bring up all of the measurements that you will be working towards. If you are using a computer, there will be some text, probably me saying Hi everyone....... then under that it says 'show more' so you click on that and it will bring up the measurements. I hope this helps 🙂
That came out fantastic! Plus you gave a great tutorial all the way around. Thank you for teaching and sharing this with us. I can't wait to start picking my colors! 🧶🤓

How can i do the infill rows if i dont want to turn my work, I havent been turning it for the sides, but if i start turning now it will look odd because i will have wrong side stitches on the right side,
You will have to fasten off after each infill row ❤️😁

This is so exciting! I haven't yet finished a wearable so I'm starting with one colour to make the process simpler.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write out the measurements for plus sizes. I’ve been struggling to work out how many more rows I have to do in order for this thing to finally fit me. 2 weeks in to making this cardi with a light weight yarn and I’ve given myself golfers/tennis elbow 😂.
Thats ok!! 🙂❤️

@@SB-hk3ew it's just my personal preference for my tension. You can use whichever hook you wish! 🥰
@@CraftandaCuppa thank you!!
brilliant you make it look so easy 😍
Thank you. It seems so much harder than it really is. Once you get going and learn the pattern of the stitches, then the rest is easy 🙂
Help. Have started to crochet join my two sides together down the back , but mine appears a bit gappy, spaces between the sets of trembles going down the back. Have got my tension as tight as possible. Any ideas please.
@@ThEhObBiT1959 I'm not sure why it's really gappy. You can literally do any seam that you wish down the back so if you prefer you could use the sc seam that you used for the shoulders, or use a needle and seam that way. I would suggest having a play about until you find one that you like 🥰
@@CraftandaCuppaThanks for that, I’ll will wait until I crochet the sleeves and try it on. Didn’t want it too baggy. The pattern is great .

@@littleoldlady1863 thank you so much 🥹😍
This is the very first cardigan I’ve ever made, and I absolutely LOVE it. The pattern was so easy to follow. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I plan to make so many more 😂
You are very welcome!!
Is there a printable version that I could follow along with as well?
Hi yes here is this link www.craftandacuppa.com/product-page/the-granny-hexagon-cardigan-pdf-pattern
Trying to make this but when I fold it one edge is curved so it doesn’t make an L. I’ve done it several times but it keeps coming out like that. Any idea what I’m doing wrong?
OK so a couple of important things for a hexi cardi are.....
Do you have 6 sides?
Do you have 3dc - ch2 - 3dc in each corner
Do you have 3dc in every gap
When you lay your hexagons out (no folded) do they lay flat? (The answer to this should be no) They should only flat once you lay them out.
To begin with, once folded, the hexagons won't be a perfect L shape, they start to straighten out the more rounds that are added.
I hope this helps! 🙂
@@CraftandaCuppa love your channel, by the way. Thanks for answering so quickly. Yea I have 6 sides, and have 3dc-ch2-3dc in each corner and 3 dc in every gap. I’m going to try it again, I’ll add more rows and see if it becomes more of a L. It’s difficult because I can’t really read directions, so having channels like yours really helps. Thanks again wish me luck!
@@DylanJCat it sounds like you are on the right track!! Good Luck!
@@CraftandaCuppa Thank you for the kind words and encouragement! Just thought you would like to know that your replies caused me to try a few more times and it’s finally coming together correctly. Fingers crossed I’ll be able to finish this. You really made a difference to me and caused me to keep trying! Thanks again.
@@DylanJCat that's amazing to hear! Keep going, you've totally got this 👍🏻
