    The Compressor side cover (snail) is called the "Volute" The backwards/forwards movement of the turbo fans is called "Axial play" also when setting the actuator I myself never rely on the measuring method only, especially on well used turbo this is due to wear on the internal part of the turbo (the part that operates the vnt ring) obtain the specs for the turbo and set up using a mityvac etc using HG as the measure. It will still operate using the measuring method but it won't be fine tuned as it could be...you get people saying it needs a flow bench etc etc, never had a problem with a balanced core I tend to go for the UK made ones by mellet they cost a bit more but you get a solid unit.

      Hi
      Yes, I like the mellet ones, but the price puts some people away from them...
      I agree with you, will not be fine tuned this way...

    And then your client " forgets " to clean the oil inlet and return so that they are spotless , start the car after they did an oil change and filter and go for a test drive . Then the phone rings . Luis , you did something wrong because my turbo broke . I have gotten those calls . And I even give an instruction paper on what to do . Your job was done fine but I have witnessed the simplest mistakes putting the turbo back on the car lead to catastrophic failure . Oilpressure , flow and cleanliness are the magical words.

      Very true...
      I always advise to to all of that, and include the paperwork that comes with the cartridges, which advises the same...
      It is up to them...

      Ahhh, a few years ago I bought a used car, found an oil leak. Turned out to be the washer seal for oil line. Mechanic just sent off the turbo straight away to a turbo place where it was disassembled and thoroughly checked out and cleaned. I see why he did it... didn't want me coming back as he knows I tend to keep my cars for a long time!

    Great videos mate as a car mechanic myself self thaught reading Haynes manuals no RUclips then lol, you should always change the oil feed pipe and washers as they degraded and block the holes over time from the heat plus oil breaking down the rubber for the sake of a few pounds it won't be warranted without and lube the oil ways in the turbo plus run the car just on the starter motor with out starting it up for a few minutes and drive off boost for a bit to and nice new filter and oil sorted. Plus only use good quality cartridge from melett turbos made in the UK very high standards as a cheap turbo could destroy an engine.

  • @puntofato
    @puntofato 2 года назад +2

    Nice video Luis.
    From what I see in your videos, your customers don't have money to fill their fuel tanks and never change the engine oil or if they do, the one that is used it is of poor quality. I hope you charge them enough for the trouble that they bring you.

    I wonder if that crud is because of a historic head gasket failure or maybe running the engine with little to no antifreeze?
    How do you warantee things like this when there are known issues with the rest of the engine that could nuke the turbo again?

    • @LMAutoRepairs
      @LMAutoRepairs  2 года назад +2

      I don't warranty nothing... unless I do install the turbo myself...
      Which means I would check and double check, etc...
      When I do just the core like this, ball is on their court...

    That banjo bolt is so blocked, that turbo had limited time before it failed anyways.
    Better now than when the turbo shoots high speed shrapnel through the engine.
    Blow by is terrible on these engines, causes solid carbon build up everywhere.

      The following photos shows the modification of the slip ring, where I added the ribbon cable and get that two extra lane needed for the paddles."
      So you wired the wires coming from the gearbox to the slipring ribbon? Did you use any lanes in the ribbon or some particular ones? There are some people using the heating slip ring pins to wire the wires coming from the gearbox but I believe your method is cleaner...
