Love this vlog. Keep it going ! It's like a daily for me know. Come in to the office and watch one of your vids and then begin editing my work lol. Looking forward to the next vlog.
On a bit of a spree this week. Should have another tomorrow morning.
Perhaps the stealthiest Publix setup would be two Tentacle Track Es and an iPhone running the Blackmagic app, which supports timecode. Have you looked into that setup?
That’s an option but I want to give them the clip with the audio baked in. After we finished I airdropped them video and it was done. Love that bit of finality. No syncing.
@@davidmorefield You really love your closure! 🤣
@@scotey Ideal situation is never hear from the again. 😂
…until they need to rebook.
I had to do a stealth shoot in a grocery store a few weeks ago. I went the route of trying to contact store managers, owners of several locally owned and corporate stores and couldn’t get anyone with real authority on the phone to even discuss it. Ended up using an R6 with rode wireless lavs on two people and just shot early enough in the day that no one got in our shot. It can be so frustrating when you want to do things through the proper channels and get blocked every step of the way.
Totally. I love that this client was ok with phone. Made it way easier.
1:00 seems eerily familiar hahahahahaha - you're lucky you don't have a huge van like a Mercedes Sprinter because then you will bring even more stuff hahaha
Exactly. I don’t want that 🙅🏻♂️
Yeah one small hill I will die on is we would not have flip out screens if the bulk of camera reviews weren’t don’t by full time RUclipsrs. The only time I ever have the screen flipped out is to tilt it up or down.
I get it on the a7iv because that’s meant to be a camera for everyone and people may want to film themselves or take selfies, but the a7Siii/FX3? Why?!
Oh don’t get me wrong, I love the flip out screen. I. Just can’t understand why the engineers made that feature then disabled it by placing the hdmi right behind. It literally does not make sense. They should move the hdmi to the top.
Guerrilla filmmaker in his element! Dope!
Lots of adjustments but still a happy client.
lol! I know that Publix! You’re a little North of my hood. Off PGA?
That sounds right. Somewhere around there
The Sony swivel screen being blocked by the headphone jack is insane 🤣 I couldn't believe it when I realized they designed it like that. They literally compromised the usability of the camera to please the vloggers that kept complaining about not being able to see themselves in front of the camera, so now if you try to monitor your audio you can't move your screen at all! Baffling.
Since monitors are usually on top of the camera, I always wondered why the hdmi wasn’t on top of the cam too. It would reduce an unnecessary 90° angle and make shorter travel from the cable to monitor.
5:18 DAAAAAMN! Never mind the next camera investment - I want LED lights under my car!!!!!!!! 😹
Financially sound decision.
Question, how are you getting so many clients? I have owned my production company for 2 years now and we get a couple good jobs here and there but then I'm stuck cold-calling companies that either don't have money or budget or already have a shooter for videos. Would love an honest response no transparency. We also do similar BTS videos as you and are slowly trying to build up. Thanks Love the videos
It’s bc of my role in the client chain. It’s why I love being a freelancer. If I’m a production company I have to seek out end clients, the people ordering the marketing service. That is a tough job trying to convince people they need video work, or find companies that want video work.
Instead, as a freelancer I work for production companies. And I work for a lot of them.
I don’t have to convince them about the value of video work. After they have gone through the headache of lead gen, creative design, logistics, scheduling… then they come to me for one of the last steps- a crew position. As the DP, they hand me a call sheet or creative debrief that they spent months making.
The more production companies I know, the more they are trying to find me jobs. I don’t want to be an agency. Being a freelance crew member is much more my style. I get less of the pie but also less of the headache. Anytime they call me, it’s bc they’ve already done a ton of work and now just need someone to shoot it.
The way I know these production companies is through a strong network, word of mouth and Production Hub.
This is the type of stuff I go over in consultation calls.
@@davidmorefield Great response and explanation! This is why I'm a fan of your content. I would love for you to check out some of my production vlogs and see your thoughts. Appreciate it, brother.
All the Production Hub notices I get are for ridiculously low rates. When those low-ball producers find somebody willing to work for those rates they keep them busy but it's bad for the established players. It becomes a race to the bottom.
@@TimTylerCine I agree with people taking low rates. But I'm not familiar with production hub.
The Osmo Pocket 3 Is a game changer for these kinds of scenes IMO
And that pairs with their dual wireless mics right? I need two transmitters feeding into the camera.
Yes, it does!
It’s silly good. DLog 10 bit (420)
Using all this equipment for social media seems overkill to me. Besides, trying to achieve the "social media look" with gear not specifically designed for it can be counterproductive. Sometimes, it's more effective to simply use an iPhone and edit with apps like CupCut than to reinvent the wheel. Social media users may not appreciate the high picture quality of the FX6 or the excellent sound, and sometimes, high-quality footage can actually deter viewers. It's frustrating, I understand. Social media has arguably been detrimental to video production, with lower entry barriers, reduced budgets, and decreased salaries compared to traditional Broadcast TV, cinema, or corporate work. I don't mean to be harsh, just stating a reality and inviting discussion.
Vers true especially if you consider the fact nothing of the expensive camera look is left after social media destroys the quality completely
Wait, did you watch the video or are you agreeing with what happened?
That was exactly the case, we switched from fx6 to iPhone and it solved the problem.
The good part is I still get a full day rate no matter which camera I use. So this day was paid the same as my corporate days. In fact, the highest retainer I’ve ever gotten was required to film in a phone. That was fantastic. Much easier to film too!
I’m glad being a videographer/filmmaker doesn’t mean shooting on expensive cameras. It means knowing how to use any camera to tell the story.
To be fair, you weren’t involved in the pre-production calls to discuss the creative approach and review the example videos. You only have my limited VO to go off of. But that still required changes once we were on set, which are documented in this vlog.
Do you have any clients requesting non traditional cameras?
@@davidmorefield Your pragmatism in this regard is wise, David. While we filmmakers lust for that brilliant, nuanced image, it's just not appropriate for everything. Excessive production quality cuts against the grain of certain projects. Documentary, for example. If I don't see the occasional blown highlight or missed focus, I begin to distrust the reality of what I'm seeing. I can totally see how social media audiences expect, subliminally or not, to see something less polished and professional. I mean, the entire idea of social media is that it's theoretically "human sharing with human." Your friend at the bar isn't going to hand you an Arri Alexa to show you something he shot while he was shopping for dinner.
Dude. that was me washing your car. ..... jk
