It’s a pleasure watching Smokey enjoying a shower. It would be helpful to see a video of a bird who doesn’t enjoy or hasn’t had many showers, yet. A tutorial for encouraging a bird to shower who doesn’t like them or one that shows how to start giving your bird showers.
What a joy to watch such a healthy and happy bird! When my grey is ready foe a bath he starts repeating "wanna go to water" until I fill his tub for him. I use a heavy ceramic dish about 9 X13 inches and place it on top of his cage where he feels safe. He usually splashes all the water out and soaks his cage and the wall next to it!
i like your videos...and your common sense approach to handling your smokey..... just inherited my parents grey....i grew up with him our guess is that he is close to 50 years old. he is great....am enjoying him in our home. he sounds just like my mom and dad....(they are both in heaven now) he got a little over stimulated the other day....to many people around and he bit the heck outta my arm.....wouldnt let go i stayed calm and he released.... i used wichhazel to clean the wound and then put 40% zinc oxide (diaper rash ointment) on it....that healed within hours.....couldnt believe it! thanks for your time and efforts....
I recently dicovered your videos and they have been very helpful. Smokey is so cute & beautiful and it's so neat how you have trained her so well to be part of your family! I have had an African Grey for 3 years now, wish I would have discovered your site earlier; I've learned alot of good tips from watching your videos so far, so Thank-you! I'm looking forward to keep watching you & Smokey!
I've followed you for quite a while. I like your down to earth approach to hire training. I think The outdoor aviary is amazing. The advice you give us always in the bird's best interest. Thank you.
Love watching your videos and its great to see a happy bird in a loving home with such a great quality of life :) (even if she seemed a little competitive toward the end there! :) :) )
Thank you for this video! I currently use a spray bottle to give showers but I’m going to look for that pump action water mister. Our Grey has that same bell and he LOVES it! I thought he was aggressive with it too but after seeing Smokey interact with her bell I’m guessing it’s normal behavior. I love watching and rewatching your videos. They are helping us so much with our CAG. We also have a Mexican red head Amazon and are doing touch training with both birds. Your videos give us so much more confidence and motivation.
Hi wingsnpaws! I’ve been watching your vids for 2 years now and have been wanting a bird or just pets in general all my life. Most of the time throughout my life, I never had the right circumstances to be able to own a long term pet. Such as space, correct environment, etc. Now, after a while, I am finally able to get a pet. I’m definitely going to get a bird because it seems most suitable for me to get. Now, whether or not I get an African grey or what bird I get is a different topic, and that’s not the issue here. What I would like to talk about is that due to the fact that I’ve never had any experience with being around animals, I get very nervous and anxious to be able to hold a bird or any animal, really. Some people may describe the feeling as “scared” and it is sometimes like that. But I do not feel any fear. I don’t feel anything when I look at animals through a screen or when I see Smokey in your videos. The problem comes in when I go in person and I get close to any animal, I am very hesitant and nervous to touch it and to be too close to it. Now I do think that if I do get a pet, I’ll be able to handle it very well and would be able to take good care of it. The problem is that I have never grabbed or held any animal before and it’s a little frightening for me when I try to do so in person. I would like to say that when I was younger, I had 3 budgies. Tho, because of my circumstances I didn’t have them for too long and really never interacted with them due to this feeling. But it feels like something I’ll be able to get over. It’s simply the fact that I can’t interact with the animal. I get a little bit scared to walk by dogs or cats etc. Please give me a solution for this if you can. Thanks all :)
Thanks so much for the videos! I have learned a lot watching you and Smokey.. my bird Indy is a Double yellow head Amazon Parrot. He is 4 months old. I have had him 3 weeks now. We are going to try our first shower tomorrow morning so hope it turns out at least a positive experience....
My african grey Morris loves taking showers he either stands in the bathtub while i shower him using a fine mist that i can chose from the showerhead. Or sometimes i fill upp his waterbowl with more slightly warmer water and he will step right in to it and play around in the water😊
so thank you for helping me wingsnpaws for like teaching us how to handle a bird properly now my budgie has a bond with me also im working on the african lovebird i hope you read this also you people who see this comment
You are an awesome teacher and helper for all caged birds whose owners heed your videos. You're teaching me a lot and I'm grateful you are not ego-based, plugging your RUclips merchandise or telling me to donate. Would you consider doing a video on bird sanctuaries or bird rescue centers as a source of companion pets? Also, would you please consider a video on bird retrieval for an escaped/lost bird or found bird? I found out 911 Parrot Alert the hard way. Thank you for any consideration.
I had a lovebird, and I have had a bluefront. Lovebird loved both, the bluefront always took showers with me. I would put her up on the curtain rod of the shower and bath first and by the time i was done she would be in full bathing frenzy and I would have the shower strike my shoulder to cut the impact on her while she was on my arm.
I am totally blind but do have four birds. And African grey, a mini macaw, a Goffin Cockatoo and a little Meyer. I know that three of my birds love the shower however, I feel the cockatoo may not do so. I wonder when I feel her body that she is not as relaxed as she should be. I will now look at alternatives in bathing her. I adore both you and smoky and find your videos entertaining as well as educational and informative thank you I am also a new RUclipsr and subscriber this is because technology can be a little difficult as I am older also.😁🤯 more videos please!
Great video! Your generalization was right regarding my budgie. She definitely loves baths. A few days ago I tried taking her in the shower with me, and she didn't enjoy it.
Some like a bath, some like a shower, my bugies like both lol....my cockatiel on the other hand, he had a different owner for 6 years, who I think used water as punishment or something, he hates water, aside from drinking it from his dish. Been slowly working with him for about a week now, he has a lot of behavioral problems I am working on, before I tackle that one.
you are reallllly taking a good care of that parrot... so nice to see that. :) What i would like to know is what is the weight of your african grey? She looks quite big for female bird...
Water makes you see the kind of different feathers birds have. My cockatiels (they love showers) are like Smokey, a lot of water is needed for them to get soaked. My green cheek conure, on the other hand, is like a sponge, a couple of drops and he looks drenched (he doesn´t like showers he prefers baths).
I have a question about the aviary. I’m looking to buy one soon but was wondering about the bottom of it. I live in the country part of FL where there is a lot of land.. where there are plenty ants and other insects.. do you have a cement bottom? Should I treat the surrounding grass area? I’m just worried she’ll get bit by something or eat an insect that she shouldn’t.. yknow?
My conure loves COLD water to bath in. I initially found out about this when I was thawing some shrimp in the sink with running water. I turned around and found him enthusiastically bathing in the bowl of very cold water. He shows no interest in bathing with room temperature water even though he always has access to a large dish of it. I just make sure the room is nice and warm before letting him bath in cold water.
Hi John, despite of many followers/questions I hope you will manage to find time to answer mine ;-) I have had african grey Kuko for 6 years now....gave him as much attention as I could, however he is a plucker, but he has times, when he stops plucking, then he starts again, but he tends to go for a certain place on his body, so I can tell that its a kind of neurotic issue...Anyways he is a great talker, knows many words and uses them at the apropriate time of day or situation so as if he knew their meanings... He seems content with us overall considering our circumstances and lack of out of cage time etc....We have just had a baby, which means even less time to spend with my grey, so I have been considering to give him away to a parrot sanctuary, where he even might find his soul mate, I mean a female as well as he might become a part of flock and be happy there... Do you think this would be the right decision? Of course I would visit more often in the beginning to make sure he is doing fine etc... Also I am his favourite from our household and it must be this time of year, when they breed as he regurgitate towards me and gives me all sings of love, which I ignore and do not encourage him, so I would leave him alone for a bit till he calms down..... This makes me wonder whether your smokey shows sings of love towards you??? You must have had this happened as she clearly adores you.... and How did you or do you deal with that sexual behaviour?
With my blue fronted Amazon, we put her on top of the shower so all the steam makes her wet and on hot days we also spray her with a regular water spray bottle.
Hey as soon I say this video I clicked it. I have a problem with showering or bathing my bird. He is a cocktail weiro does not like showers and does not like eating fruit or veggies. He is very picky, and he is the second bird I had. The first one I had would eat everything and have a bath everyday. I don’t force him to show or anything and I did spray him a few times but he just kept running away in the cage so I had to stop. Does where the bird is in the house matter if they have a shower? My bird sits inside the house near windows. Should I try leaving him outside so then if he bathes? I’ve only ever seen him bathe once and that was at the start of the year. He is only year and 7 months old. I am not sure what to do cause I’m afraid he might be damaging his feathers every once in a while due to the fact he doesn’t bathe.
My budgie refuses to bath. He even has a bowl of water I put on the floor with the intention for him to bathe in, but instead that's just became his drinking bowl, but he won't bath lol. He won't touch his regular drinking bowl. I'll probably use it for some alternate food instead as it serves no purpose for him really right now. He likes water though. Showering isn't a problem at all. I guess it's just down to the birds preference.
my green cheek conure likes to sit on my shampoo caddy and get the indirect mist that bounces off of me while I shower. He puffs up and closes his eyes. does that mean he likes it? he also presents his feathers too. Gets aggressive when I try to remove him from the shower. Any tips?
I just starting watching your videos and love them, I saw in a few that Smokey tends to run her beak over her perch and was just curious why? My uncle had an African Grey when I was 9-10 and she was so sweet but knew nothing about them but I'm trying to learn since I do want to have one eventually and want to ensure that I know all I can
I just adopted a African Grey, she is 27. she is a rescue. her weight is only 378 and i was wondering what foods would be best for fattening her up a little. I really enjoy your video's i have learned a lot by watching them and Mango likes to watch Smokey too!
I'm not qualified to give recommendations on food, but I can tell you what I feed Smokey. She's fed primarily a pelleted diet with some fruits/veggies. Seeds and nuts are given occasionally during training as treats.
Since a few months I have a lovebird and your video's really helped me better understand my bird and what she needs. I like your gentle approach and respect for the birds natural behaviour. Maybe you already spoke about this topic, but I'd like to know what you think about a companion for your bird. My bird was alone when I adopted her. Her cage is open during the day and she really bonded with me. And I know that in most cases your bird won't get along with just any other bird. But sometimes I feel guilty that she doesn't have someone who (so to speak) speaks her language. I'd like to know what your opinion is. (Or anyone else who reads this)
Yes, Smokey will definitely be getting a companion in the near future. I am still looking around but also am in no rush to just bring any bird into our little flock. I do think they do better when kept with other birds, especially those of their own species.
wingsNpaws thank you for your insight and advice. And that is exiting. Are you going to document their introduction if you’ll find a companion? And maybe make a video about it on RUclips? I really like to learn more from you.
I have a cockatiel that will not eat anything but pellets and seeds. He bites, runs, or picks up and throws anything I offer. Fruits and veggies included... help
How often should i take her to shower? I have a young rescue Sulphur Crested Cockatoo who just lets me take her into the shower, she walks to the end of my arm and showers herself. I've always let her do her own thing. (I don't shower with her)
My afican gray refuses to shower bathe anything, he literally holds his feather so close and totally not enjoying it I have tryed everything q spray bottle bigger water boul everything what do I do
It's been years since my bird has enjoyed baths or showers :( I don't know how to get my CAG to enjoy it. I've tried: Shower, sink, mister inside, mister outside, room temp water, cool and warm water... My bird just loves to "shower" in his water bowl, which only allows for his feet and a bit of his body. I've tried a bigger bath at the bottom of his day gym, but hates it. Any recommendations?
I'm in exactly the same boat as KentSpain85. My grey is an older plucker and I want her skin to stay at least somewhat hydrated, but she doesn't even take "foot baths" in her water bowl much anymore. Bigger bowls go ignored or are tipped over. At this point, I've resigned to giving her showers outside in her aviary, even though she doesn't like them. It's the least scary method I've found (she's completely terrified of the sink, for instance). I don't know what made her dislike water so much, but she's a pretty paranoid bird in general.
If he already takes a bath in his water bowl, just replace the water bowl with a larger bowl. As someone else on here mentioned, you can get a ceramic bowl thats heavy enough to not tip over.
I would not go to a bird store, even those that specialize in birds. No matter how they market it, bird stores look to make a profit from the sale of birds so their quality of care/socialization is never priority. Smokey was from a reputable breeder, but he no longer breeds his birds.
Perfectly love avakin Do you let him roam your house with you, or does he stay in his cage all the time? If he is restless, lonely, and understimulated he could be taking it out on himself. Sort of like how when people get anxious they'll pick at the their fingers or bite their nails.
and he was a police he loved animals he had farm animals till one day they had and operation of like getting crocs out of the lake and he braught a babby back home but he released back then few weaks later he got a bat from the wild the bat would always go to his hand bring back fish from the market at night also when he was operating as a police he found a hatchling of a hornbil in the forest he brought it back home and raised it also he found a green bird i didnt know what it was so ya he trained both birds i was told by my uncle beacause i ws 1 when he passed away the bird would dance if you would sing a song also hornbil

I agree, my U2 HATES being bathed

That sounds like a lot of fun! Glad he's enjoying it!
I like the Texas Einstein parrot. When he takes a shower he says, "Look at you, you're all WET!!"
i like your videos...and your common sense approach to handling your smokey.....
just inherited my parents grey....i grew up with him
our guess is that he is close to 50 years old.
he is great....am enjoying him in our home. he sounds just like my mom and dad....(they are both in heaven now)
he got a little over stimulated the other day....to many people around and he bit the heck outta my arm.....wouldnt let go
i stayed calm and he released....
i used wichhazel to clean the wound and then put 40% zinc oxide (diaper rash ointment) on it....that healed within hours.....couldnt believe it!
thanks for your time and efforts....
Dusty Dog may your parrot live for a 100 years
You are a fantastic parrot owner ,calm, patient , loving and soothing voice . Smokey is a lucky bird and so are you❤️
Smoky is so FLUFFY so sweet! Big wing hugs. Great video as usual...you're a talented teacher!
Thank you so much!
What a joy to watch such a healthy and happy bird
You do such a nice job with Smokey. I'm getting a lot of great tips by watching you! Thanks.
Your videos are so full of information! I'm doing lots of research on greys and I found you at the perfect time! Time to watch all your vids!
I’m just in love with your outdoor Avery. Wish I had one.

Smokey loves her fans!
Such a sweet bird
This is ssooooooo going to help me with my rescue! Thank you!Thank you!

What a good girl! She loves it. Some of my birds like showers while others like to bath in a bowl and some don't like baths, 😀
I love smokey! She's such a good bird :)
Love watching your videos and its great to see a happy bird in a loving home with such a great quality of life :) (even if she seemed a little competitive toward the end there! :) :) )
Thank for the kind comment!
getting my first bird in a week, sun conure, and I'm very excited. I've been researching a lot and this video was very helpful!
How is he now?
So adorable Smokey
Thank you!
I'm glad they're helpful!
Excellent video, helped us with our young eclectus Parrot Monty. Thanks!
Thanks, my amazon loves to use the spray bottle I shower him with he enjoys it so much and plays while doing it!
Sounds like fun!
Great video! I learned a lot on how to make my bird's shower more enjoyable! Thanks!
Your welcome!
That was very enjoyable. I.e., it's a joy to observe Smokey being misted.
She looks beautiful ❤️♥️🕊🕊♥️🕊🕊😘

Thanks so much for the videos! I have learned a lot watching you and Smokey.. my bird Indy is a Double yellow head Amazon Parrot. He is 4 months old. I have had him 3 weeks now. We are going to try our first shower tomorrow morning so hope it turns out at least a positive experience....
My african grey Morris loves taking showers he either stands in the bathtub while i shower him using a fine mist that i can chose from the showerhead. Or sometimes i fill upp his waterbowl with more slightly warmer water and he will step right in to it and play around in the water😊
Thank You for the tips. Not all of my parrots want to take showers/baths, so this was very helpful 🤗
I'm glad it helped!
Beautiful
so thank you for helping me wingsnpaws for like teaching us how to handle a bird properly now my budgie has a bond with me also im working on the african lovebird i hope you read this also you people who see this comment

I will keep these in mind for future videos! And yes, no need to donate; who does that?!
I love watching Smokey.
Thanks for watching!
This video was very useful for me. Thank you
Your welcome!
Our budgies,(Chum,Keiko) like a mist spray bath and will spread their wings, etc. Nice to see Smokey enjoying her bath, refreshing!
Glad they're enjoying it!
The sparrows take sand bathes in our garden, i do provide water 💦 but a good sand bath is often desired lol 😂

Great video! Your generalization was right regarding my budgie. She definitely loves baths. A few days ago I tried taking her in the shower with me, and she didn't enjoy it.
Yup, no need to take her into the shower if she's already enjoying a bath. Doing so will only gradually lead her to hate/fear water.

Just ordered a fine mister for my African Gray.
My CAG bathes himself when it rains outside especially if there is a thunder storm
Glad he's enjoying it!

That's a very interesting observation!
This has been extremely helpful. My shower head is too strong, think I'll put a larger bowl out for her as she dips in the waterbowl.
I have a question about the aviary. I’m looking to buy one soon but was wondering about the bottom of it. I live in the country part of FL where there is a lot of land.. where there are plenty ants and other insects.. do you have a cement bottom? Should I treat the surrounding grass area? Very good video. I personally think that the water in the pump should be not too hot or not too cold but lukewarm. Cheers 👏🍻🦜
My conure loves COLD water to bath in. I initially found out about this when I was thawing some shrimp in the sink with running water. Smokey the magnificent thanks
I've been guilty of using water to scare my bird. Time to change that mis-philosophy. Thanks for continuing to dispel myths.
why would you ever want to "scare" your bird?
With my blue fronted Amazon, we put her on top of the shower so all the steam makes her wet and on hot days we also spray her with a regular water spray bottle.
Smokey also loves the sauna :)
I told you in the last video as well
Is the water warm not to hot or cold
hello my name is raj and i realy like birds and have been reaserching birds and parrots for 7 years

Is it ok for your bird to shower in the wintertime if the house stays at 70-72 degrees?
I wish my african grey waz this lovely and smart😂🤣
My grey is smart but as soon as he sees a drop of water coming his direction he grabs the passport and flies to the airport.
My budgie refuses to bath. He even has a bowl of water I put on the floor with the intention for him to bathe in, but instead that's just became his drinking bowl, but he won't bath lol. How long should I shower my bird??
Hi i have 9 week african grey call Mega... Can i know how old i can start to introduce mega to water for shower?
I love parrots
So do I!
I just starting watching your videos and love them, I saw in a few that Smokey tends to run her beak over her perch and was just curious why? My uncle had an African Grey when I was 9-10 and she was so sweet but knew nothing about them but I'm trying to learn since I do want to have one eventually and want to ensure that I know all I can
That's how birds clean their beaks.
wingsNpaws oh alright, thank you. I love your videos!

Smokey is fed primarily a pelleted diet with some veggies & fruits. Seeds and nuts are used only for treats.
i also have an african grey.... can u please tell me that how i teach my parrot to speak...what is the procedure to teach her....
Do you have any idea how to teach scarlet Macaw to mimic words . I have a female scarlet macaw About five months old .
If you use preasure sprayer it will hurt gray parrot?
Am searching the bathing option.. Pls replay as soon as possible.
I’ve just recently got an African grey parrot and I was wandering what food would you recommend and what benefits would it have
I'm not qualified to give recommendations on food, but I can tell you what I feed Smokey.
Sorry to ask this but how old is smokey?
one more thing not only parrots are smart all are smart
i also have an african grey ...... can u please tell me that how i teach my parrot to talk....plzzzz
(I don't shower with her)
As much as she would like!
My umbrella hates bathing idk what to do
When bathing your Grey is it okay to use baby shampoo? Or any kind of shampoo on your bird?
No!
KentSpain85 my grey loves to bath in a large dish ON TOP of his cage. I use a heavy ceramic oven dish so it won't tip over.
Just put your bird on top of the shower, so the steam will make it wet
Thank you for the tip. I do take her into the shower with me (she has a shower perch), but she never looks noticeably wetter afterwards.
If he already takes a bath in his water bowl, just replace the water bowl with a larger bowl. As someone else on here mentioned, you can get a ceramic bowl thats heavy enough to not tip over.
Is she seriously making cockatiel sounds? Beautiful bird.
She makes lots of sounds! LOL
Is it recommended to add bird’s bathing salt into the mist bottle ? Or just plain water will be the best ?
NO, just plain water.
i know youll say thats too early
How often should we shower them
Smokey enjoys her showers once weekly but will not shower more than that. Some birds, like conures, enjoy baths almost daily. It won't hurt them.
and i had parakeets wen i was 6
Where did you get Smokey I live in SoCal and want to know of a good bird store
I Don’t Have A Name
I would recommend going to an animal shelter rather then a pet shop.
I would not go to a bird store, even those that specialize in birds. No matter how they market it, bird stores look to make a profit from the sale of birds so their quality of care/socialization is never priority. Smokey was from a reputable breeder, but he no longer breeds his birds.
wingsNpaws thank you
but i was inspired
The only way mine will shower is if she is hanging on my finger. She hates baths but I need her to learn to do it herself
What's that word she says all the time? She said it in the first second of this video, it sounds kind of like "war-chocolate-dryer"
That's jibberish, lol
My grey very scary to when I spray on it what to do?
Kuldip Shah spray very little at first on one side in a place where your bird can run/fly away. use hot water as when it comes out it will be warm
Ya nu Sanders Thank you
Ya nu Sanders you have blue front Amazon?
Kuldip Shah yes, but I feel like they are very similar to African Greys
Ya nu Sanders I m from India.
where are you from ?
by someone
My parrot bites his wings i need an advice
Perfectly love avakin
Do you let him roam your house with you, or does he stay in his cage all the time? If he is restless, lonely, and understimulated he could be taking it out on himself. Sort of like how when people get anxious they'll pick at the their fingers or bite their nails.
Are you sure he's not preening?
He kinda "screams" at the wings
and my age is 11
and he was a police he loved animals he had farm animals
till one day they had and operation of like getting crocs out of the lake and he braught a babby back home but he released back then few weaks later he got a bat from the wild the bat would always go to his hand bring back fish from the market at night also when he was operating as a police he found a hatchling of a hornbil in the forest he brought it back home and raised it also he found a green bird i didnt know what it was so ya he trained both birds i was told by my uncle beacause i ws 1 when he passed away the bird would dance if you would sing a song also hornbil
