Dude, you are amazing. You do SO much extra work to make your parrot happy and comfortable and it is so comforting to any animal lover. Thank you, thank you so much. Your bird is beyond lucky that you are her caretaker
Thank you so much for your kind comment! I think any animal lover would agree that we owe it to them when we bring them into our homes to provide for them the best care that we can. Smokey definitely deserves it.
My favorite thing about this channel, is what it teaches me that most other channels/ Forums/ Books/ Articles do not. You are very involved and attuned when it comes to the birds psych. You help me understand how birds process information and perceive certain things going on around itself. From what I have gathered, this is the most important thing to training birds and raising a well behaved bird. Thank you so much for all your EXCELLENT information.
It must warm your heart to witness Smokey behave identical to wild AG's in the rain. Truly respect that you uploaded this to educate. I also like all the greenery you planted around her safe zone.
Seriously you have very good understanding for that bird, that shows me you are gifted with a very good mindset. Seriously very impressed, keep up the good work.
I just love how beautifully done your videos are, how loving you are to your bird and all the great tips and ideas you share. I learned a lot from your ''teaching your bird biting is not ok". You really respect & understand Smokey's feelings. Bravo! Smokey's aviary is STUNNING 😍
Love her energy and your enthusiasm! My cockatiel showers on top of my head when I take a shower. He likes the fine spray that bounces up rather than the powerful direct spray.
I am not a bird owner, but I enjoy watching several you tube bird videos and am subscribing to your channel because of the awesome way you treat Smokey!
I can see you have a great relationship with Smokey and see her body language very well. I have had birds most of my life, but had to not buy any more due to allergies, but I had to say you are amazing. I used to have this great relationship with my babies,I always made them feel comfortable. Birds are my favorite pet to own..and it takes patience and understanding to make a great trusting relationship! Thanks for sharing! HAGD!
This is how I started showering her when she was young. Her first shower was on the carrier because it was portable and easy for me to bring back and forth. Great question!
Smokey 🤩is adorable. You are so correct. TY for this advice which can be applied to other areas of our birds' lives. The love and trust between you both is so obvious. 😉👏🏻
Dont have a bird but love the work u do with smokey, an the training advice..I'm hopeing an looking forward to adopting a bird soon..thanx for ur videos, ur advice is great..👍
I wanted to add to your wonderful shower demonstration. I always use warm, actually the warmest tap water because it cools in the spraying process and I try not to chill her. My amazon loves to hang on two toys he can grip and turn upside down. That’s when I know he’s really having fun!
Great Videos! I have a baby Double Yellow Head. Sunny just turned one in October. Such a ham, My other Parrots are in there 30s, so I pick up a lot watching your videos with Smokey, Thanks
you are the best bird owner. wish most of those IG birds were in good conditions like this. It's sad seeing birds on instagram with owners who do not keep them in ideal conditions.
I love your videos! The set up you have is wonderful with the ability to have an outdoor environment for smokey. I had a maroon bellied conure named spotty. She died in July after having her for over 22 yrs. But after seeing how well you take care of smokey I feel guilty that I couldn't have done something more for my baby girl. Being in Texas I couldn't have an outdoor environment so she was indoors all the time. Are you in Southern California? What temperatures are too hot and too cold to keep a bird outside. I was always afraid of drafts cuz I had heard birds are very susceptible to drafts. Thanks for your fun and educational smokey videos. At least I can see how your wonderful smokey is progressing. Maybe I'll get another bird, but I'm afraid I might not be able to give a bird an optimal environment.
Another good trick that I've got from a German forum: Turn on the vacuum in the background while spraying your birds. My cockatiels would never like to bathe or shower until I tried this trick. It worked during the first try. I guess it simulates rainfall to them. I don't know if it works with all species. That said, the tips from this video are still important. Though, this trick might be useful for bird owners whose birds don't have a dedicated spot where they like to shower.
A major transformation from the beginning of the shower on the perch. And now being on the travel crate. Smokey was definitely at ease. Thank you kindly for sharing this important information. 😊
I'm saving up to adopt a scarlet macaw, and your videos really teach me a lot! Please keep doing what you're doing, and I love being a supporter of your channel!
make sure you do LOTS of research. i don't know what your experience level is, obviously.. but they can be challenging pets if you're not an experienced bird owner. try and visit the big parrots in a sanctuary or other environment where you can interact with them first, before buying. they are huge, loud, and demand a LOT of your time and money. parrot rescue centers get a lot of the large birds turned in because they just become too much to handle for new owners. i'm not saying not to get one.. only that you want to understand what you're getting into before laying out a lot of money that you won't get back if it doesn't work out.
Oh, don't worry, it's going to be years before I'm ready to actually get one. So far I'm just doing my research, interacting with local birds, and putting some money in the bank for the future.
+Casey Horner just to say, I'm 99% sure they are the most destructive out of the other macaws. so many safe wooden toys will be needed! just a few tips.
I love what you do! We have an African grey named Dante who I love so much. I would love to be able to get to where you and smokey are with cuddling and an outside area. Thanks for what you do!
Thank you for posting this video! I have tried several bowls of water for my bird but it's not at all interested in bathing yet. I've had him/her only about three months so I haven't given up. I am learning that you have to be patient. Like you said watch their timidity and respond accordingly. If they act spooked it will only take longer to earn that trust. 🐦
you might want to try other methods as well. some birds hate misters and only bathe in bowls... some hate bowls but love misters... some like bowls with stuff (leaves, grass) in it to step on... for large birds, if you have a gentle setting on your showerhead and some perches they can grip onto, some actually do love to get right into the regular shower.. i've even seen a video or two where the birds were just walking around on the floor of the shower. again; directly showering them is mainlyfor bigger birds (full-size macaws, cockatoos, etc), but smaller birds might also enjoy being near you when you shower, like perched over the shower door, or on a perch not directly in the water flow. but like everything else; take it at your birds' pace and don't force it.
Absolutely fabulous lesson on bird friendly and natural showering outdoors. Amazing. Always wonder about birds showering in human showers with the strong smell of soaps and shampoos. 😕
My conure insists on joining me in the shower. He usually hangs out on the shower head or curtain rod soaking up steam and chattering away. Sometimes He wants more - doesn't want in the stream directly but he will get on my shoulder and shower in the spray that bounces off my head.
Thank you! There's actually no problem with birds showering in human showers so long as the bird is enjoying it and the human is cognizant of their body language.
Thank you! I would keep the shower shorter because they use it for moisturising not for cleaning. For cleaning they use the powder that they produce as long as I know. Too long showers could have the opposit effect of making their skin drier. You know like when we have long baths that make our skin soft and then it loses too much water afterwards. When she walks away it means enough. She keeps flying to you because you call her and she loves qulity time with you not because she wants to shower more. I say this for adding a new element to our strive to eccellence in treating animals. I give my contribution. : ) I love you two, thank you very much!
You bring up some good points. However, birds will drench themselves when showering in the wild. Even birds who willingly take baths in captivity will drench themselves pretty well. The excess water helps to remove old powder but the bird will produce more powder or oil and distribute them evenly throughout their body after preening and this cycle continues. My observations do lead me to strongly believe that she flies into the mist because she enjoys it. She will run into the mist while on the crate as well. When she doesn't want to shower, she won't fly into the mist.
Ah ok, I didn't know what you are saying. Plus you know her certently more then me! : ) Thank you ever so much for your videos I treasure all your tips!
if you think about it it makes sense she wants to be on the crate for a tighter grip because for 1 predator but also she flaps her wings a lot to and maybe before when she did this on the other perches or your hand she felt like that she was going to fall or something (I know they can fly but if you were trying to shower and then you suddenly flew up into the sky that would be scary) Thank you! You really help me with my research
Hi I'm new to your channel. Tomorrow I am meeting my new adopted African grey. I live in Turkey and he will come to me from a Turkish family. How can I make him feel welcome. It will be a huge change for him. But I'd like to make the change as easy as I can. I love how Smokey is with you, and how well you understand her. It's beautiful!
Hi there, thank you so much for this video. My CAG hates water, I assumed that it was because he is still very young (6 months) so I changed the way I showered him. He enjoyed the new way (a small solar powered fountain that fits in his outside cage) for the first few times but I think that was because of the novelty because he doesn't go near it now. He doesn't mind it in his cage so I leave it in when its hot so he can shower when he feels like it. Should I do something else in the meantime or just leave him to shower on his terms? Thanks again for your awesome videos about Smokey, I have learnt so much.
Thank you for this. I try to train my AG to shower but she‘s totally terified. I always stop when she runs away but sometime she have to get clean 🤷🏼♀️ Tommorow i try this 🙃
Just like our african grey he seems to have some trouble breathing in that thick watermist. If you bring the nozzle closer to his chest once in a while so he can breath dry air, he might not fly away to get some air :) Great video!
Hi! Would you mind to tell us what brand plant mister that is, please? I looked online for "plant mister" and all I saw were these gorgeous, tiny, usually glass plant misters. My Jo Jo would definitely love to play with a shiny, round, pale turquoise glass bauble such as those, but obviously those won't do! Right now Jo Jo likes to try to climb into her water dish and make a big mess, not to mention she then doesn't have very much water to actually drink. The other way she gets a shower is when she stands on the tub floor and I turn on the water and aim it toward the wall - the water bounces off the wall and makes a spray for her to shower in. It works but I think she'd enjoy the fine mist of that mister more. Also, for anyone who is thinking of showering their new bird how I currently shower mine, please know I did this in tiny tiny steps, very slowly over many many tries. She was never afraid, and though it does work, I know that she's not getting as much of a shower as she might prefer. The mister is the better solution.
We unfortunately made the mistake of forcing the shower on our bird. We had another one previously (an amazon) and that guy just loved the shower and the shower head. The gray we have now doesn’t at all. The sprayer you use there is a great idea and I will “steal” it and try with my bird. The only thing is that I don’t have a place to wash him like this in the winter since where I live it is too cold outside (it is around 0 degress now). Maybe one of those shower perches with good grip could be an idea? I was thinking of still using the shower but not the shower head...
Hi! Thank you so much for these videos, they’re going to help tremendously. I have a question, my lovebird always lunges at my hand to bite but he won’t eat out of my hand. I haven’t been able to get him to try anything other than his food. How to I get him to not bite me when food isn’t a reinforcement? Thank you!
Hi, I've been thinking of getting a parrot (I'm still not sure what I want and is a good idea for me. Either a Barred parakeet or an Eclectus) but what I'm kind of afraid of is, I have a Labrador, it's the sweetest thing in the world and really gentle. So I'm not that afraid of him harming the parrot in any way. But I am afraid about the parrot being stressed out when he might be around. I see you also have a dog and I'd like to know how you handled that. (I also live with my brother who has a Jack Russel which is less gentle and often chases bird but he is planning to move out with her next month before I get a parrot. And as always, thanks for making these videos. They're both really educational and entertaining! I wish you and your family a good day.
Same here. We rescued our Grey in May and her previous owner described putting her in the shower and spraying her with the nozzle which seems to have traumatized her. She has decided to have a bath on her terms (in her water dish) but only twice since May. We have tried misting her, but she shakes and seems to be very much afraid, even though it is very gentle. We have also tried offering her a shallow dish of water several times, but she doesn't seem to be interested in getting in, she would prefer to pick it up with her beak and dump it.
Counter conditioning means pairing an undesirable behavior with a positive consequence so that over time, the learner associates the behavior with something that is positive and the undesirable behaviors becomes...well...desirable. For example, for a bird that fears water, I would mist off to the bird's side and reward with a treat. I would continue doing this until the bird learns that mist = signal for a treat. Soon, the bird looks forward to the mist because they learn that mist = treat.
Thank you! We see a similar stress response as Nathan described whenever we go near the mister which we gradually introduced into our bird room. Got him to play near it with rewards but that's as far as we got before stressing him, poor guy. We will try what you suggest and let you know.
With such a large aviary, I would suggest leaving a large container of water in the bottom, so she can bathe herself. My birds mostly bathe daily, summer and winter. Granted, I live in Queensland Australia and our winters can be warm in comparison to others states. Though it can still get down to 5 degrees at night (rarely) , but we do average 10-15 degrees at night and 18-25 degrees during the days in winter. In summer it different though, even the most reluctant bird will bathe in our summers, because it's stupidly hot and humid.
My gray doesn' t like to 'shower'; but I bought a 6" deep x about 20" wide and 30" long clear plastic storage box, and just filled it 3" deep with water, then tilted it so that it went from 1" deep to about 4.5" deep, and put it on the top of his 2'x3' cage. It's summer, and it's hot, so he makes several trips into his 'pool' during the day for a dip, splashing around, and making a mess. He seems to really like just standing in it. I just have to keep an eye on it, so if he poops in it, I can quickly change the water. I got it at the container store.
Until I saw her vigorous wing flaps I didn’t realize that African Greys have a white underlayment of feathers. I guess Smokey has white petticoats on!!
Hi love your channel! I do have a grey too he hates shower which i think in natural nature shower don’t exist its the rain! But all bird in their nature do take bath and my bird the same loves the bath hates the shower👍🏻
Great video. I use a pump sprayer like that and take them in the shower (turned off) just to have a place to get all wet. I hold my bird on my hand but none of my birds flap their wings like that. Any suggestions how I can get them to flap the wings.? Maybe I should get a shower perch ? But I am concerned they wouldn’t stay on it.
This is amazing how do you do that! My bird hates when I spray water on him he gets really aggressive with me afterwards, so I just spray water on my hand and pet him.
I was thinking about getting one of those foggers for reptiles, setting it on a timer for once a day for 30 mins and putting it in a corner of my greys aviary. Good/Bad idea? He usually enjoys showers, but I figure this will give him a chance to either stand under or not by his own choice. Obviously I'll make sure it only affects one corner, so he has plenty of space to get away if he doesn't want it, as well as making sure he actually uses it so I dont neglect showering him. Thanks for any input, love your vids.
Hello, my 5 months African Grey does not like showers... thanks for the video! Another problem that I have is that she loves be out of the cage so there is always drama to put her in bed... I put her inside the cage (on my hand) and when I close the cage and cover with a sheet she panics and starts climbing on the cage... I need to calm her with my voice until she's on the perch and then run away from the room... do you have any advice? Should I cover my parrot? I'm also over worried because in fact she's already a plucker despite her short age. I'm trying to fix that with vitamins, loads of toys and company (though it is almost impossible to spend more time with her having in mind I work from home). I'm starting to think she's kinda blackmailing me... Thanks!
I think the temperature depends on the bird (maybe it depends on species, too). My conure seems to love cold water. I've tried showering her multiple times with warm or lukewarm water, and she is not into it at all.
Do you use distilled water- I know that minerals in tap water hurt my eyes. Also, I envisage a lever that Smoky could press, and the mist shower could come down from the top like normal rain, and she could choose when she want to shower.....just a idea.
My African Grey doesn't like being showered with a mist bottle. Instead, he loves to play in a bowl of water inside his cage. He gets himself soaking wet from beak to tail then spends several hours preening. Is this sufficient to properly and thoroughly clean his body?
Dude, you are amazing. You do SO much extra work to make your parrot happy and comfortable and it is so comforting to any animal lover. Thank you, thank you so much. Your bird is beyond lucky that you are her caretaker
Thank you so much for your kind comment! I think any animal lover would agree that we owe it to them when we bring them into our homes to provide for them the best care that we can. Smokey definitely deserves it.
I love a nice RUclips community
Parents should take tips from this guy.

This is how I started showering her when she was young. Her first shower was on the carrier because it was portable and easy for me to bring back and forth. Great question!

Thank you!
I really want cockatoo birds and lovely birds
Hi, I've been thinking of getting a parrot (I'm still not sure what I want and is a good idea for me. Either a Barred parakeet or an Eclectus) but what I'm kind of afraid of is,
I have a Labrador, it's the sweetest thing in the world and really gentle.

Would you say more about counter-conditioning? I need to know how to help my bird overcome a previous bad experience with water.
My grey max doesnt like showers either. I wait till he tries to get in his water bowl then I spray him down. Once hes good and wet he loves it
Poor birdie....😃Just kidding, she need it!
Where did you buy that outdoor cage?
How long do you usually shower your bird and what temperature is the water you usually use?
Until I saw her vigorous wing flaps I didn’t realize that African Greys have a white underlayment of feathers. I guess Smokey has white petticoats on!!
Hi love your channel! I do have a grey too he hates shower which i think in natural nature shower don’t exist its the rain! But all bird in their nature do take bath and my bird the same loves the bath hates the shower👍🏻
9:10 "Don't force your bird to do that."
(bird flies to perch a second time)
Bird: "DUDE, I'm done!!
Sooo helfull
Very informative video. Same problem. My greyparrot
Do you add anything to the water?
Where did you find that misting container at? My male Eclectus won't shower. I'm thinking that misting gadget you are using might be the answer.
How often should a Quaker bathe/shower?
This is amazing how do you do that! My bird hates when I spray water on him he gets really aggressive with me afterwards, so I just spray water on my hand and pet him.
What brand is your mister please??? How would l do that in a shower room? I don't have an outside aviary
some birds do like showers though
I was thinking about getting one of those foggers for reptiles, setting it on a timer for once a day for 30 mins and putting it in a corner of my greys aviary. Good/Bad idea? He usually enjoys showers, but I figure this will give him a chance to either stand under or not by his own choice. Obviously I'll make sure it only affects one corner, so he has plenty of space to get away if he doesn't want it, as well as making sure he actually uses it so I dont neglect showering him. Thanks for any input, love your vids.
I know people who do this and think it's a great idea! However, I know Smokey only showers once a week and will not do it more than that.
This guy is so nice to animals; even the Vegan Teacher would like this guy!
Love 💘💘💘
Thank you Nigel!
Thanks!
How warm is the water that u r using
Hi. I have 9 week old african grey. When and how can i shower him?
Do you use warm water?
I think the temperature depends on the bird (maybe it depends on species, too). My conure seems to love cold water. I've tried showering her multiple times with warm or lukewarm water, and she is not into it at all.
How often do you trim her claws? Do you ever have to trim her beak?
My parrot to hateeessss taking shower !
@wingsnpaws how is smokey doing?
👍🏼❤️
Thank you!
My friend has an African grey, and she has plucked her feathers on her chest and neck. Any ideas as to what she can do to correct this?
Would it be better to use warm water
VERY GREAT VIDEO👍
I LOVE WET SMOKEY SUPER CUTE♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
I DON'T HAVE ANY PARROT BUT I LOVE TO YOUR VIDEO'S ☺️
Thank you! They are a lot of work!
Where should I buy this shower?
Where do you buy yours avary from
All I got are 2 cats no parrots. Wonder if I can try this technique on my cats.
Do you use distilled water- I know that minerals in tap water hurt my eyes. Also, I envisage a lever that Smoky could press, and the mist shower could come down from the top like normal rain, and she could choose when she want to shower.....just a idea.
Smoky Need a friend bird!
Hay I am planing to buy a bride which one should I duty a grey parrot or a Macau or other
My African Grey doesn't like being showered with a mist bottle. Instead, he loves to play in a bowl of water inside his cage. He gets himself soaking wet from beak to tail then spends several hours preening. Is this sufficient to properly and thoroughly clean his body?
