Hey Paul, another good review! I have now watched a number of your reviews about the prado, and yes not much has changed. I bought the first prado 2015 gxl 2.8L 150PLC 6sp variant, and since than I’ve observed not much has changed. As we’re aware with Toyota, they tend to moves (if they move) a little slower than many other car companies but thats not necessarily a bad thing either, you don’t fix that which is not broken. I suspect their processes are a little more conservative than others - nothing wrong with that specially if it gets you home.
We’ve had ours for 3 weeks (exact same in crystal pearl white) with the wheel on the back and really love it. I’d by lying if I didn’t think it was an obscene amount of money for, as everyone has else has mentioned, a fairly dated car but resale was a huge factor for us. People never think about resale and depreciation when they buy new cars. You might save $20k upfront with the Everest but it’s like buying an iPhone and an Android and selling them 3 years later. Chalk and cheese. People just love these things and they really hold their value. Not to mention customer service, dealership network - all the standard things Toyota is unrivalled in. We tinkered with the idea off holding off for the updated model but there’s rumours they’ll be delayed beyond 2022. So we figured we would buy this, keep it for five years then upgrade once they have ironed out any issues with the new series and offload ours as the warranty expires. I’m glad you think this is the sweet spot in terms of models. We obviously agreed and all the extra specs aside on the Kakadu, the Bluray player entertainment system really got me over the line of refusing to buy a car at $100k with that technology in it. It’s crazy. We haven’t had media in discs, or any physical format for that matter in our house for almost a decade. Also, convenient having the flat tail gate pack to get access without the need to open the barn door and although I prefer the look, we went with the tyre on the back. For practicality. Better for long trips with the long range tank, better around town (I hate filling up) and more convenient if you actually need to access the spare tire, or if you have a set of seperate off road tyres which you change out for that purpose. Great review, as always. You’re my favourite car reviewer by far.
I've had a few of these over the years as company fleets and can't say it left me impressed. Not terrible or anything just underwhelming for the money. Drivers area is rather cramped for a big car. Drives a bit truck like and needs more get up and go, after a full day of driving I was always happy to be out of it. I'm getting on at 56 but the Prado has as a whiff of old mans car. Great review as always Paul.
Hey Flaming Hedgehog, what is impressive if not the Prado? And have you tested the latest one? I drove a 2015 3.0L diesel and it was unimpressed with that. Noisy and sluggish. The latest Prado's IDK, but must be a lot better.
@@Malc664 True that but considering this is still that same ageing chassis from 2009 (which in itself isn't much different from it's 2002 derivative) and still lame 64.5 kW/t (Empty!) engine package I can't imagine it being markedly any different with just a facelift. I have owned a couple of LC100s. I quite often rent Prado GXLs for work. I have always been very impressed after spending 8 hours a day in one not mud plugging but on dirt roads. If I was to buy a 4WD for myself, I would buy a Prado GXL. Yes, they are slightly dated but for me, they are the sweet spot in the field of 4WDs.
how exactly is digital screens stupid ? I have one in my Golf probably the best I've seen, especially when I could get the maps on the speedo screen instead of having to look at the central dash. Also, who really looks at Tacho at all, a more prominent digital speed in the centre is more meaningful.
@@pummyy reliability I guess. The more tech you put in a car the more chance it may have issues especially in Australia's climate. Something to be said in being conservative in on e's design.
Put aside an extra $10-15k. The new model will be a price gouge, just like the LC300. Not just a Toyota thing though, there's hardly a new car on the horizon that hasn't risen by $10k at least.
Great traveling vehicle. Prados are super comfy. Really reliable, here in Africa you find a lot of prado 90 series. Wish more people would buy these with a manual transmission.
Competes is a strong word. The prado is a superior wagon to the ute based wagons. Yes, way more expensive but the others arnt even close to being as set up from the factory.
Very late to this party but I recently took a brand new VX on a 3000km punt in 2 weeks, suprisingly the car performed very well in suburbia being smooth, quiet and comfortable but was quite rough and harsh on gravel/rock filled roads which was completely opposite of what I expected. The new ones have a button to electronically move the 3rd row seats.
Great review as usual, and I think you made the point that is what sells so many Prados - theres nothing that does everything as well as the prado. I bought a 2021 VX new in June and took it to Innaminka from Adelaide, through the Flinders (private properties 4wd tracks), up the Strezlecki, to Coogie Lakes and back all in complete standard trim. it was perfect, no tyre or suspension issues, and I was very comfortable in it. Definately the 4wd that does everything asked with ease. (previously owned 2017 LR Discovery 5 HSE paid $115k!- unreliable POS, GU patrol, D22 Navara etc. - the Prado is decent for the price IMHO)
my parent has a lc prado 2022 TX-L (japan market) and it is a very good car. we recently got 5k km and still going pretty strong but i was just here to see a comparisson between tx, tx-l vx-vx-l, because i believe that those are the most common ones i noticed that the transfer case from vx-l (japan market) is on the same place has in the kakadu. also noticed that vx-l and kakadu are pretty much the same, but wannted to see that for myself, because i know someone who has vx-l and i could feel the diference between tx-l and vx-l from the rims, optional confort mode/sport(for vx-l), crawl control (for vx-l), headligths (halogen for tx-tx-l and LED for vx-l) and stuff like that. and yes, i know you show australian specs and all that, but i would apreciate more if you could show those diferences. greetings from a mozambican.
I drive in our company a 2019 model and must say, this is one of the few BEST car they've bought! Towing heavy 3.5t trailer and go offroad? With toyota prado, no problem!
I have the same car, picked up 4 weeks ago, our third Prado. Love them. The HDC needs to be in Low Range 1st gear. If you were just in D then that's probably why it ran away. Not sure as I haven't tried it in this Prado.
Hi Paul, Do you think you could include seat adjustability for your reviews, it’s a common issue that seat adjustment on the drivers side is not the same as the passenger side, and it would be great to see if they mirror them or the passenger loses out on adjustment. Also, worth noting that in many Toyota products, the passenger seat is set higher up than the drivers side, and as a result can impact seating for taller people when adjustments are lacking. It would be great to know this info for future reviews.
Good review as always! I have owned one since the latest LCI update back in 2018. It’s a good car to own, definitely agree about dependability. I don’t get with Toyota why they don’t invest in better and enhanced infotainment. You don’t even get Heads up Display for a car just shy of $90k. If Toyota and mind you Lexus, invest in Driver Assistance, Infotainment and finishing, the Europeans will struggle to compete.
If you want to know why Prado and Toyota are behind in tech take a look at any land rover review on RUclips and you’ll see why. Toyota are ultra conservative with how reliable their tech is and that’s the reason their reliability is second to none.
It's a case of why fix what isn't broken. Like the cruise control stork. It's been the same since the 90s. I am surprised it hasn't been moved to the wheel front but nope. Still tacked up underneath. I love the prado and cruiser but their pricing is getting a little out of hand. Sat in a 300 sahara today and the sticker was 153k...

OMG, most testers use to complain about the Jeep Grand Cherokee is getting very long in the tooth. Come out in 2011, but never hear about this with the Prado, it came out in 2009 and not due for replacement in late 2022. Don't get me wrong. I think the Prado is a great car, but please Toyota, give us a proper update a lot earlier.
Love my 2010 Kakadu, it had done 165000 km snd still feels like new. Nothing has gone wrong with it. Bulletproof is the best way to describe my Prado. My mechanic, who also owns a Prado told me that when you work on them you can tell the difference over other cars. My car has the 4 litre petrol motor developed for Lexus, which will outlast 2 diesel motors. I would like some more modern technology but every time l look at replacing the Prado l am stuffed. I hate diesel and there is nothing else on the market that l would have the confidence in purchasing compared to my car which still has half a million kilometres left in it.
What's the fuel economy you getting on petrol prado? Highway ? Urban? Also, do you have any bullbars or lifts? I have 2019 prado diesel replaced engine 2 times. I just want to get rid of it and buy something better?
@@tranlee5622 I get 11 to12 litres per 100 suburban and freeway. My brother in law, an automotive engineer told me that the Lexus designed motor in my Prado should outlast 2 of the old 3 litre diesels fitted to Prados, not sure about the later 2.8 litre diesels.. Thanks for the report Paul - I’ve experienced the reliability and quality of owning 10 Subarus but my new regional lifestyle dictates that the Subie is no longer practical for my domestic/touring needs where space and true offroad abilities are concerned - after many months of research I decided Toyota was a no-brainer and if I didn’t need my new Hilux ute a Prado would be my SUV choice - as far as I’m concerned no other brands come close and no-one has a true reliable competitor for the Troopcarrier - Mercedes and Land Rover are rubbish - looking forward to promise of new Prado - John in SA
Good review. Nice to see it was tested off road to show some of its capabilities straight out of the box. I suspect these are going to sell like hot cakes now it's been announced that there's up to a FOUR year wait for the new LandCruiser 300.
Finally they got rid of that spare wheel on the back. It looked too bulky for the Prado, where I'm from, the Prado didn't have that which was good but really hope that all those cool features inside the Prado will stay.
Hi Paul, I just subscribed to your channel. It is a no fuss review of some of the common cars and SUV out there. I like how you reviewed the Prado and the MUX, and is still torn between the two models. I will be placing an order now so that I will get it in time for next year. Both SUVs have promising reviews but there is still a lot of uncertainty in the Prado (will it have the same feel as the current, etc). With this, what is your experience on each passing model of the Prado and MUX? Is it safe to assume the features and feel on this year's model be the same or slightly the same as each passing year? thanks
Just took delivery of my new prado kakadu - love it but. Don't expect to hear the apple car play phone, no volume control, as soon as you get a little road noise you cant hear the caller, complained to the dealer but no fix apparently. Now using my apple ear pods for phone calls whilst driving. If you are going to do any off road work you will find it very hard to get decent 19inch tyres, all seem to be 20 and 18inch.
One thing to try is turning up the volume on your phone during the call. So wait for the call to come through, turn up the volume on the radio and manually increase the volume on your phone.
Just received a new Kakadu with 19 inch rims. I found a set of second hand 17 inch rims from an FJ cruiser and have fitted decent off road tyres on so I now have two sets of wheels. Much better option, best of both worlds. No problems with my Apple car play.
We have had Prados and a few other large diesel 4x4s as work vehicles for at least 14 years now and most of my colleagues agree that the Prado is the best of the bunch. We have both 2020 and 2021 models and the first time I put my foot down in the 2021 I noticed the increase in power. Had to look up the specs to make sure I wasn’t imagining it. 2.8L models without the increase in power are so damn slow when trying to merge at 110, especially up any hill. More power makes it almost adequate
Paul, Always great videos and very informative. I wonder however; could you do a segment(s) of versus videos? To explain: maybe like a review of two/three vehicles running concurrently in the same video? Ie hiliux/triton/bt50 for example, or prado/Pajero sport/Everest. Aimed at 10 mins total, and at the important things like styling, driving, comfort, accessories (which you cover off quite well), chuck in the durometer too 😂 You could play with the format, but I think a side by side comparison would be great for potential buyers.
A friend of mine picked up a VX and I got the GXL. He brags about the 360 camera but the quality sucks. We compared the 2 cars side by side but it wasn't worth the extra $$$ to get the VX. I didn't want to go over my budget and considering we're both putting black duck seat covers on them I didn't see the extra cash going to the leather upgrade either, and I fitted my own puddle courtesy lights for $70
@@michaelparkes2712 I went to my dealers site and it said there was one in stock so i rang them up and asked what is going on. It has now been allocated to me so hopefully will have it in a couple of weeks.
I worked at Toyota as a mechanic for 12 years. Toyota are the ultimate penny pinchers. If something works they just won't mess with it. The cruise control storks were first used in the 80s and they use them in everything. The 75 series would have to be 95% profit by now, looks today just like the troopy I worked on in 1995. I worked on BJ, FJ, 60, 75 and 80 Cruisers and the eairly Prados. 30 years ago. Prados were always nice from day 1.

@@thothcapital Well lose ALL your electrics and you have no means of, either stopping in a panic situation or just parking it on a hill and straining your auto trans parking sprag. But Hey, it makes it quicker and cheaper to manufacture just like the push button stop/start.
Electric park brakes are great. The argument about losing electrics and you can’t use the brake - in a modern vehicle if you lose your electrics you can’t do ANYthing sometimes even open a door. But as far as I know the brake is applied in total loss of electrics - gradually, not suddenly - so you actually end up with a braked vehicle.
@@jerrymyahzcat Well as touching the EPB button tells the computer to electrify the motors in the brake housing and clamp on the disc, how can any electricity be applied to activate them if there is TOTAL electrical failure?
@@adoreslaurel far as I was aware the opposite occurs. The electricity is used to hold the brakes Off and if no power they release applying the brake. Like truck brakes use air pressure to keep the brakes off. Perhaps I’m wrong. Also there would almost never ever be an instantaneous loss of all power to the system - brakes are required to have redundancy. I guarantee if you research how they work you’ll find info about redundancy and how they work in the event of power loss. If a battery goes flat over time - computer systems will start shutting things down including the brake system. I don’t believe power is required to keep the brakes on - otherwise if you disconnected the battery and the car was in neutral it could roll away and do damage or kill someone.

19” wheels, oh dear :) I will agree to disagree on going for the Kakadu, above the VX you get comfort mode (nice ride) or at the other end Sport+ (firm suspension with modulated steering - those are the two features that make sense, Sport mode is only throttle and trans). And of course KDSS is gold for handling as well. I forgot about the paddle shifters that are actually really well calibrated with the updated shift points they made with the engine update, super smooth (rev matched?) down shifts, does it better than my 8 speed lexus did unless i was hammering along.

Got it since 3 months and just love it
As always Paul - you did a good job on the review! Thanks!
I am so glad it still has analogue instruments not those stupid digital screens!

how exactly is digital screens stupid ? I have one in my Golf probably the best I've seen, especially when I could get the maps on the speedo screen instead of having to look at the central dash. Also, who really looks at Tacho at all, a more prominent digital speed in the centre is more meaningful.

I see sooo many of these during school pick up and drop off
Very late to this party but I recently took a brand new VX on a 3000km punt in 2 weeks, suprisingly the car performed very well in suburbia being smooth, quiet and comfortable but was quite rough and harsh on gravel/rock filled roads which was completely opposite of what I expected.
How much you paid for it?
my parent has a lc prado 2022 TX-L (japan market) and it is a very good car.
we recently got 5k km and still going pretty strong
but i was just here to see a comparisson between tx, tx-l vx-vx-l, because i believe that those are the most common ones
i noticed that the transfer case from vx-l (japan market) is on the same place has in the kakadu.
also noticed that vx-l and kakadu are pretty much the same, but wannted to see that for myself, because i know someone who has vx-l and i could feel the diference between tx-l and vx-l from the rims, optional confort mode/sport(for vx-l), crawl control (for vx-l), headligths (halogen for tx-tx-l and LED for vx-l) and stuff like that.
and yes, i know you show australian specs and all that, but i would apreciate more if you could show those diferences.

I hate the headlight spread of this car and the LC. To much glare yet not enough focus intensity to illuminate the road.

I guess similar to the 70, the are slowly updating the prado with parts that already have a reputation to last for years to come
Very true!
I drive in our company a 2019 model and must say, this is one of the few BEST car they've bought!
Towing heavy 3.5t trailer and go offroad? With toyota prado, no problem!
Unless I’m mistaken, without a GVM upgrade, towing is limited to 3T for a standard Prado
The competitors you referred to all compete with the Fortuner not the Peado…
Thanks for the fantastic, very informative review! I'm considering one of these and this video was extremely helpful, especially the offroad section.
Smashed one down a pretty spicy track in WA and the thing handled no worries. Pretty impressive.

I have the same car, picked up 4 weeks ago, our third Prado. Love them. The HDC needs to be in Low Range 1st gear. If you were just in D then that's probably why it ran away. Not sure as I haven't tried it in this Prado.

Hi Paul,
Do you think you could include seat adjustability for your reviews, it’s a common issue that seat adjustment on the drivers side is not the same as the passenger side, and it would be great to see if they mirror them or the passenger loses out on adjustment.

Good review. Nice to see it was tested off road to show some of its capabilities straight out of the box. I suspect these are going to sell like hot cakes now it's been announced that there's up to a FOUR year wait for the new LandCruiser 300.
The Prado is popular in Africa and the Middle East.

Always great videos and very informative. I wonder however; could you do a segment(s) of versus videos? To explain: maybe like a review of two/three vehicles running concurrently in the same video? Ie hiliux/triton/bt50 for example, or prado/Pajero sport/Everest. Aimed at 10 mins total, and at the important things like styling, driving, comfort, accessories (which you cover off quite well), chuck in the durometer too 😂
You could play with the format, but I think a side by side comparison would be great for potential buyers.
Great review! Tho FYI it's not sports mode, it's sequential mode.
But you already reviewed the Prado!!!

So wish the 7 seat was an option not standard as I would rather the extra space in the boot.

G'day Paul, Another helpful review. Could you please do a review on the 2022/23 Toyota LandCruiser Prado GXL

Should i wait for the new model in coming years or current model is still recommended?

Exactly. Don't get the logic of the electronic parking brakes in off road vehicles.

All great stuff if you can justify the price. Otherwise the VX is still a great option.
